It's one of my favorites in the city because it's not overly sweet like most places, making it much more enjoyable. Squid Kimchi Pancake (4.5/5): This was my personal favorite. The kimchi was incredibly flavorful and the pancake was perfectly thin. The con was that it was a bit small and there could have more of a "crisp" Limited time Spicy Pork Rib (4/5): Very meaty. Most pieces were tender, though a few were on the drier side. Tripe Soup (4/5): A bit bland for the broth but very hearty and comforting. Abalone over Rice (2/5): This was the only major miss. One of the better korean spots in K-town. A little out of the way but in my opinion the food was worth it. We ordered the Bossom, Grilled Bulgogi, Octupus, and Soy Marinated crab. Had a wonderful lunch at Sam Woo Jung with my husband on a Monday afternoon. There was no wait and the servers were very attentive and refilled our banchan multiple times. The kimchi was delicious, as was the entire meal. The lunch set was definitely worth it! My husband had the bulgolgi with the mushroom rice and I had the spicy pork with bibimbap. I came here with a friend for lunch and was excited to try the famous beef bulgogi. Unlike other bulgogis, this one is finished table side and offered in 3 sizes. We got the 400g along with an order of mushroom rice and felt like it was the right amount of food. The side dishes were a little disappointing as they did not have deep flavors - the kimchis were pretty young tasting, decent flavor but not melded with the cabbage. The grilled fish was a nice size but very bland. The mushroom rice was interesting. 5 different mushrooms cooked with umami rice. This was also a little on the bland side (even with the the accompanying sauce) but it did go well with the bulgogi. The bulgogi was definitely the highlights. Rice, sweet, warm and full of flavor. The broth goes well with rice and there are a ton of different textures with the mix of ingredients (glass noodles, rice cakes, enoki mushrooms and veg. I was surprised to find out this popular place had two floors and very spacious dining rooms! But! no waiting area....(They literally have a booth seat enough to sit only two people!) I loved it and now have it bookmarked as a fave - the absolute highlight of the meal was their dessert. Sam Woo Jung is always super packed, but service is top notch. Water pitchers were always refilled and they brought us more banchan whenever we finished a few. It's such a cute spot too even though a bit cramped. Of course, we had to order the bulgolgi (medium was suggested for 3-4 people), and from there, we got the pajeon, octopus, and the cold perilla noodles, as well as the cold kimchi noodles. The bulgolgi was melt-in-your-mouth flavorful. Soo good and a must get! The octopus was tasty and spicy and came with sliced sweet potato, which was unexpected, but somehow worked. Needed more octopus pieces though. Pajeon was perfect - nice and crispy on the outside, chewy inside. Large chunks of octopus in this. Made a reservation for 4 a week beforehand. It was packed on a random Monday night so we were glad to have our reservation. This is definitely the place to be especially with how cold it's been in NYC! We ordered their seafood pancake, Bossam, bulgogi, and cold kimchi noodles to split between 4. Everything was absolutely delicious. The bulgogi was flavorful and melted in our mouths as did the Bossam. The seafood pancake was crispy and had a good amount of seafood in it. We came to Sam woo Jung for a table of 6, note that if you need a large table of 6 or over you have to contact the restaurant! They did not take this through resy. However we did not have an issue with reservations! The restaurant has two floors. Main floor and an upstairs area. We had a table upstairs and was very nice, it was out of the bustle of the main floor and felt more private. The menu is authentic Korean however there were not so many options. They do a few amazing dishes and they stick to them! Which I like to see but when coming with a large group I should've known there would not be so many options. Either way we were able to try most of the dishes. We ordered the: raw crabs, spicy octopus, seafood pancake, the famous Bulgogi which comes in a piping hot soup which still needed to be cooked, mul galbi also raw that was cooked table top, and the cold kimchi noodles. Overall basically all of our dishes had a good amount of spiciness and the beef was very fresh. The dishes were good, but would I come back, likely not. Definitely not worth the hype. I've had Sam Woo Jung bookmarked for a while. When a friend said he also had it bookmarked, we decided that's exactly where we're having his birthday dinner. He made a reservation over the phone, since they don't take reservations for parties over 5 on the Resy app. Sam Woo Jung is the NYC location of a Seoul staple. They specialize in Seoul-style bulgogi, with Korean comfort food. For drinks, we had an assortment - - Seosomun, a rice wine with nurungji - Jeil, Korean pine needle infused soju high ball - Seoul Spring, yuzu infused soju high ball - Matcha Sparkling, a sparkling matcha All the drinks were great, but I think the Jeil was the standout. The pine needles were crisp and refreshing. For food, between the 6 of us, we split: - Pajeon with assorted seafood - Bossam with housemade kimchi and accompaniments - Bulgogi, their signature bulgogi that comes with enoki mushroom, noodles, and dduk as well as 3 daily side dishes, fried fish, and ssam set - Cold perilla noodles - Mushroom rice with 5 kinds of mushrooms My favorite, of course, was the Bossam because I am a HUGE bossam fan. (They are part of the Hand Hospitality restaurant group and we loved Her Name is Han. ) We ordered the bulgogi and the pajeon. We really didn't need the pajeon but both were excellent. The server cooks the bulgogi with with fish cakes, noodles and broth at the table. You can add a side of rice to absorbs the wonderful broth/sauce. Loved the fish and banchan (sides) that came with it. We noticed the table next to us the server actually portioned out the servings to the diner. The pajeon (seafood pancake) was cooked to perfection. Lots of seafood and a crispy and tasty exterior. Had leftovers from both as there were only two of us. I've been meaning to come by for ages! Recently stopped by with a group of 3 for a weekend dinner, we had reservations and it was definitely packed when we got there around 7pm. We had a table on the second floor, which was fortunately a bit smaller/quieter. We ordered a bunch of dishes to share: - "Seoul-style" bulgogi: this was the one cooked in the broth, and since we had a bunch of other dishes too, we opted for the 400g size. I was a bit worried it wouldn't be enough at first, but it ended up being the perfect amount. The meat was very tender and flavourful, and I liked how the slightly-sweet broth added some depth to the naturally savoury taste of the bulgogi. Other additions like the rice cakes and the eggs were nice, although I didn't understand why we got specific spoons to eat the eggs with. - kkakdugi fried rice: very yummy, the kimchi flavour was excellent without being too overpowering. The various veggies (esp the titular kkakdugi radish) were excellent. I'd definitely recommend this! - cold kimchi noodles: The noodles were a cold, refreshing complement to the richer flavours of the bulgogi, a perfect pairing. They were a bit too soft for my taste, but YMMV. Portion size not the biggest but enough to share. - bossam: delicious! really tender, each piece just melted in my mouth. The kimchi was fairly average, but I liked the (housemade, apparently) ssamjang that also came with it. Portion size also felt small for the price but not too crazy. Other things of note: The banchan side dishes weren't amazing (the fish in particular was really dry and hard to chew). I liked the barley tea! The Seosomun (rice wine) was SO good-- had this rich creaminess that I didn't expect and the toasted rice flavor came through nicely. The Aewol (rice wine infused with orange flavor) was also very nice and came in this adorable little bottle but we both preferred the Seosomun a bit more. Banchan was alright; my favorite was the kimchi. Both the raw marinated crab and shrimp were yummy; we actually preferred the shrimp to our surprise. Octopus was good, had a nice flavor. Bulgogi was alright but not that different from any other bulgogi I've tried. The beef bulgogi was delicious -- fattier than what I've had at other spots, but I liked the diversity of ingredients included in their style of bulgogi. You can also order rice (included) to go with the meal. We get barley tea. The place is nice. It used to be a Thai place (also owned by hand hospitality). It was a light remodel. The meat itself is tasty and soft. I don't think it was too fatty - I am a bit picky on that. I hope they keep up the quality of the meat. The broth makes the meat really juicy and tender, although I did find it to be a little too sweet for my liking. I tasted a pretty strong black pepper flavor come through too.
