Been doing "Dive Bars" in NYC for decades, so I thought I'd stop in based on the 4.5* ratings. I WAS BLOWN AWAY! There is nothing like this place! I had the good fortune of being taken care of by Adam, the owner, an extremely welcoming and knowledgeable host. The bourbon selection is absolutely 10/10. He has vintage and specialty bottles, all priced clearly by the oz., that are really beyond imagination. Trust me on this one.. you WILL NOT be disappointed. Ok if you wanna ball on a budget and be in midtown come here! $9 for a freaking burger? Unheard of anywhere in the city unless you know a guy. The mozzarella sticks said 5 of them but we got four of them. They were good none the less. ::bathroom alert:: Very clean bathroom. I was very happy about this because I had just ate. There was tons of soap, it smelled nice in there. The beer and shot special under $10 in the city? Haven't seen that in awhile. The beers are super cheap here as well. They feel like old NY prices! Can't complain. They have four booths in the back maybe it was three. I did notice one of the hanging lights was from an 80s pizza hut joint. Letting you know now the paper towels for your face at the table felt like jail toliet paper, very rough. The bar doesn't have bar stools with backs! You either need to get one or two tables by their mini kitchen, very hot there not recommended for preimenopause or menopausal women or one of the booths. This is a great bar they played 60s music a lot. Heard some weird al too! Very random and fun place to be. The bartender was nice as well as security! Try the burger! Worth the $9!! read more

We absolutely loved this place. We stopped in on a whim to kill some time before other plans and it ended up being the highlight of our day. The staff is super friendly, and was more than willing to chat with you while they were free. The vibe of the place is great, you can have conversation with regulars or out of towners. The price was great too! Their private label beer is decent, but super cheap. We also grabbed the fried pickles which were excellent. We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area. read more

One of the few excellent and reasonably priced dive bars in Hells Kitchen. The only reason I wont leave 5 stars is the music is always too soft. But they do have a full service digital jukebox where you can play anything you wish. Lately their Local Blonde draft beer has been tasting strange as if they need to clean the keg lines, but they do have $4 PBR cans. Finally a new bar in NYC that is not greedy. Local 42 also has best cheeseburgers in NYC and very friendly service. Its also one of the few bars in NYC I trust using my credit card without seeing added fees. read more

Kinda love this bar! But very rude service. The drinks are reasonably priced for this part of town, they have a few food options, and also it just feels like a decent place to sit around and chat with friends. Me and my friend did get harassed while we were here by three drunk tourist. It went on way too long...all in all I would say that I would recommend this place except I had two quite negative interactions with the Bartender. I asked a question about a beer and she gave me a very rude response, but I thought that she was joking and in general, probably just a strange person so I let it go. But then at the end of the night I was paying I handed her a card and then was like oh sorry that's the wrong card. I need to change it and she shouted at me. We're not doing this all night and she ran the card anyway, even though I needed to put it on a different card I was really surprised that was a very bizarre way to treat your customer. I worked in bars and restaurants and other Customer Service positions. I've never done anything like that and never would. I might go back there someday, but I actually don't feel like it anytime soon. read more

Cheap drinks, kind staff, unique decor, and a good time made up for a bad experience with another establishment up a couple blocks. Truly what a refreshing experience. Even when I found a little bug in my drinks and brought my complaint and drink back to the bartender and asked if she could make a new one, she paid close attention to solving the problem. What a great addition to the hood! Drawing from a wealth a nostalgia, Local 42 really captures the vibe of the area and pays homage to its history. Also a plus is the reasonable pricing in this day and age of outrages costs for eating/drinking out. As for the menu, what we've tried is fantastic! The Salchipapas was indulgent. My husband and I stumbled across this bar while exploring NyC. The beer on tap was as low as $4 with the most expensive beer being $6. The food was also low priced and delicious. Tonya the bartender was delightful. We ordered pizza by slice from zillions at $3.50 delivered for free. I wish we ordered from their menu. Only had one day on new york and wanted pizza. read more

It's easy to reminisce about "old New York." The bar which has taken over the space of the semi-infamous Dave's Tavern seemingly strives for that, paying homage to the grungier bar that preceded it. However it fails in creating either a pleasant bar experience or a true dive reminiscent of the days gone by. Shockingly, the service at the old Dave's was remarkably superior to the new establishment. Bartenders making talk with customers is a wonderful sign of positive of customer building but when it comes at the expense of actually serving customers, it is for naught. I wish I could comment on the food, but it took too long sitting with an empty glass to order. read more
