Octo truffle siu mai
Caroline O.

Yummy. Shareable dishes so great to come with a large group of friends. I've come here for casual dinner as well as a Chinese new year eve dinner. Their lunch deals are also pretty worth.

I came to Octo on a weekend with a large group of friends and we split multiple dishes. It was great to try the sweet and sour pork, stir fried vegetables, and a spicy but savory chicken dish. I also got a bowl of jajangmeon (black bean noodles) and jjamppong (seafood noodles) to share. All the food was excellent and I would come back. All the dishes here were hot, flavorful, and fresh. After walking around New York City all morning, Octo was a nice place to rest my legs, enjoy good food, and catch up with friends.

They have a solid lunch special. I got the Szechuan order and it was filling. They omitted the pork for me. Decor is nice. It was empty when I visited but I imagine it got busy later in the day.

I had an overall good experience at Octo. I thought the dishes I ordered were very clean tasting. I liked how they had deals depending on the day. I thought the Jajangmyeon was just ok. It tasted homemade and for jajangmyeon that's not what you want to get when eating out. The tangsuyook was pretty good though. Service was fine. The ambiance is good; it looks pretty modern and clean.

Treated myself to lunch today... had OCTO bookmarked for a bit, and decided to try their lunch menu. They offer a pretty good range of lunch sets... it's a decent deal considering it's midtown. Octo is spacious, with high ceilings and booth seats. I came solo, no reservations. Able to accommodate and seated me quickly. I like they offer hot tea... I got the Gunsan set, which comes with the Korean version sweet & sour pork (Tangsuyuk) and a spicy seafood noodle soup (Jjamppong). Sides with some pickled radish, cucumber, and poached dumplings. The dumplings were quite yummy! The seafood Jjamppong was good, love the spiciness on a wintry day. BUT the biggest left down was the Tangsuyuk... I love this dish in Korea... so I was quite disappointed when this dish lacked the "crunchy", "tangy" and the meat was too thick. The sauce got too stuck on the pork instead of a glaze... I think I would skip it next time, maybe get something else to try. Highlight - Would get the poached dumplings again!

Solid spot for a last min reservation, but food is just okay. Reasonable prices though and lively atmosphere - Jellyfish salad (4/5): good but nothing special, super refreshing - Mushroom dumplings (3/5): mushroomy flavor but a bit too much skin to filling ratio - Pork tangsuyuk (3/5): nice crisp and not too heavy (very light dish actually), but a bit bland - Eggplant (4/5): great flavor and texture but eggplant could have been cooked with a bit more wok flavor - Steak truffle jajangmyeon (3.5/5): nice truffle flavor upon first bite, but the sauce itself ended up being too overpowering in the end. Very black bean forward. I enjoyed the texture of the noodles but there wasn't that much. Steak was cooked very well though! More on the rare side if you prefer that

Very inventive fusion Chinese, Korean food with some French techniques into it. We were here with a big party for a company celebration and they were super attentive. The truffle duck is a must try, and so are ALL of their dumplings. It's unlike ANYTHING that you will have tried. If I had to pick a bone. It would be the price. It was quite pricey in both the food and the drinks.

Came here on a Saturday night a bit past dinner rush and was seated immediately. We ordered the bossam, which came with plenty of meat but only 6 pieces of lettuce. We asked for extra lettuce in order to have the right number for the meat. At most Korean restaurants, extra lettuce does not cost extra. However, here they charge without saying! That aside, the jellyfish dish I thought would be like other Chinese restaurants. This one is super salty, and the part of jellyfish served is the head which is basically like eating cartilage. Other than that, their staple dishes are really good. The jajungmyeon with truffle steak is quite truffley and the steak is cooked to perfection. The crispy seared rice pot is also pleasant for a cold winter day.

Had dinner here the other night with my parents- we got the crispy chili chicken, beef ribs and pepper beef and mapo tofu. The flavor of everything was super delicious, the restaurant had great decor and a nice charming vibe, and staff was attentive. Excellent experience.

Came for an early dinner and got seated right away. They have great customer service and staff are very friendly! Wasn't a big fan of the cucumbers, they lacked taste. But I did enjoy eating the jjampong and jajangmyeon. Tangsuyuk was also very dry and tough to chew.

Incredibly modern and clean ambiance in this Korean Chinese fusion restaurant. Jjajangmyeon - may be the most decent place in manhatran; certainly better than hyo dong gak but still missing that umami. Tangsuyuk - large pieces of pork which honestly make it hard to eat but the meat is good quality and large portions. It's wildly bland as if there isn't even salt in the batter. They do provide soy sauce upon request. The traditional accompanying sauce is also pretty clean and uneventful which lends to the clean aesthetic kind of feel of the food here. The chopsticks are beautiful but so long. Like cooking chopstick long. And it makes it difficult to eat with them. They provide bibs upon request so you don't get the black bean sauce all of you. Kind, attentive service.

Did the tasting menu and it wasn't bad! Some courses were good and some were meh but nothing was affirmatively bad. We also added the soy crispy chicken bc of the rave reviews. I loved it but my husband didn't. Will want to return to try their king crab 3 ways!

Octo was recommended by a friend, so we decided to meet there. After looking over the menu, we opted for the tasting menu -- and believe me, it's a lot of food. The tasting menu runs about $58 before tax. We also ordered mocktails, which were tasty but definitely overpriced for a non-alcoholic drink. The tasting menu included jellyfish salad, shrimp sandwich, kimchi dumpling, truffle shumai, Peking duck (5 pieces each), XO scallop, and black pepper beef. For our mains, since there were two of us, we each chose a different dish: jajangmyeon and jjamppong. The service was excellent, the staff was attentive and friendly throughout. However, the food left something to be desired. While Octo is Michelin-rated and has been featured in Eater, we honestly didn't see what all the hype was about.

I was warmly greeted by the gentleman at the door (5 service there), which set a great first impression. However, as soon as I walked downstairs, it felt like the space had lost its speakeasy vibe. I was seated right near the stairs and could feel cold air from outside every time the door opened, which made the experience uncomfortable. I was also surprised to see how much the cocktail menu had been reduced. When I asked about it, the response was that "the place changed a lot." That's fair -- places evolve -- but instead of highlighting the improvements or new strengths, the explanation focused negatively on what the bar used to be. As someone who really enjoyed the former version, that wasn't reassuring. Unfortunately, the drinks themselves didn't make up for it. One of the two cocktails was simply not good. No one came back to check on the drinks, and when I asked for the check after about 20 minutes, there was no acknowledgment that I had barely touched mine or any inquiry about my experience. Overall, a place I once enjoyed and recommended now feels more like a standard dive bar where " Mixologist " were replaced by bartender and were fun cool looking and tasty drinks were replaced by " less complex cocktail ", lacking the warmth and attention to detail that once made it special.

Easy to find if you know what you're looking for, if you arrive right at 5pm on a cold weeknight in the winter, you'll easily find a table or seat at the bar. Very cute space, cozy like everyone says, but nothing mind blowing. Music is moderately loud. The menu in early February still included their winter holiday cocktails. I was more interested in the apple sage house-made fermented soda, and it was pretty good-large glass, flavorful and not too sweet. My friend enjoyed her pomegranate version. The space started to fill up at around 5:30. Service was polite when you could get it, but generally very inattentive, even before it got busy. It honestly didn't feel too different from anu other very nice NYC bar, in terms of menu selection, prices, ambiance and service. Maybe that's standard for NYC speakeasies, but the places I frequented in other cities were more fun and felt more worth the price. I'll still give another NYC spot a try, but not coming back to Thyme.

It somehow manages to feel both refined and relaxed at the same time. The kind of place where you half expect to spot Hemingway in the corner pretending not to eavesdrop. We started with half a dozen oysters, which were fresh, briny, and exactly what you want with serious cocktails. Crisp, clean, gone in about three minutes. For drinks, we ordered the Smoke Show and the King Tusk. The Smoke Show was beautifully balanced. The Grey Goose vodka and Dolin Dry gave it that classic martini backbone, but the fino sherry and brine added depth. The smoked olive oil and blue cheese olive brought just enough savory drama without overpowering the glass. It was complex but not fussy. The King Tusk leaned more aromatic and layered. The vermouths gave it richness, while the Buddha's Hand and osmanthus flower added subtle citrus and floral notes that lingered in a really elegant way. It felt like a cocktail designed to be savored slowly. The music fit the mood perfectly, not too loud, just enough to give the room energy without killing conversation. Overall, it's a great spot if you want elevated drinks in a space that feels transportive without being pretentious. Definitely a place I'd come back to when I'm in the mood for a refined, slightly cinematic night out in Flatiron.
