As I've said previously, I try to avoid midtown. It's congested and touristy and the restaurants are usually just not that great. But Irving on Hudson is an exception. The view is gorgeous and sweeping. The service is attentive and professional. The drinks are sophisticated. I ended up here because I saw a video about their gin and tonic. Sounds simple, but it's one of my favorite drinks, and I'm always looking for someone who can do it well. I ordered their "dear G&T" and it was a fruity, complex riff on my old favorite. I also got the foreign forage, "a bourbon smash with a mint zing." It was also a delicious take on a classic. They have several types of cocktails, all broken down by spirit and flavor profile. They also offer a lot of spirits made in New York State. They have cocktails with earthy notes, fruity notes, fancy martinis, and a section boasting limited edition and special spirits, if you're "feeling fancy" and wanna cough up 35 bucks instead of 20 or 25! They have a bar snacks menu (sliders, nuts, and the like). I had their thick cut fries and they were light, seasoned, and tasty. I couldn't stop eating them. I came by with my partner shortly before midnight on my birthday. We were able to get seated against the glass and look out over the city while we enjoyed our cocktails. Around 12:30, the server brought out a hand-written birthday card and two glasses of champagne which was completely unexpected. Hard to go wrong with a high rise/rooftop bar in a place like NYC. Well, you can go very wrong when places count on the view to overcome overpriced mediocrity, but I'm happy to say Dear Irving does it right! Views are fantastic of course. Interior is what I would best call comfortably swanky...posh, relaxed, and vibrant lounge where you can have a quiet conversation in the corner or enjoy a lively group gathering. Exceptionally good service, as the bartender and servers know their stuff and treat you well. At the risk of burying the lede (it's a bar, after all, and I've yet to mention drinks), the cocktails are excellent. Good variety of spirits and styles, all well-made and, honestly, not badly priced given the overall venue and experience. There is a bar area on both sides, so depending on where you are seated, you get completely different views. One side overlooks the skyline while the other looks out over the river, and both are gorgeous. We tried two drinks and really enjoyed both. *Somewhere Over the Andes: a refreshing lychee flavor with lime and lemon *Legends of Gotham: made with Jaywalk heirloom rye and vermouth Both were great, but the Legends of Gotham felt more unique. We walked in and were seated at a table that was not right next to the windows, but it was still beautiful and we could walk around to take photos. So don't expect a quiet, intimate evening. The crowds can sometimes take away from the relaxing vibe, but hey, it's New York, and there's always something to look at. Located on the 40th floor inside the Aliz Hotel, my company hosted a milestone celebrating 30 years in the US and 20 years in the UK at Dear Irving On Hudson yesterday. Reservation is highly recommended. Upon arrival by elevator, guests were treated with a glass of champagne in a small, lively, and welcoming 007-themed interior with classy speakeasy-style lounge chairs and couches. A selected menu with choices of unique cocktails, beer, wine, and other mixed drinks were offered as well as trays of appetizers, i.e., Chicken Empanadas, Sliders, Tuna, and Falafel Balls being passed around by the staff. We also had catered food consisting of Filet Mignon, Salmon and Pasta. For entertainment, Dan played magic on the guitar and set up photo booth to make this event memorable. The two small outdoor balconies with some seating provided a panoramic view of the surrounding cityscape, deemed breathtaking, of the Empire State Building, One World Trade, Hudson Yards, the Chrysler Building, the Statue of Liberty, and a gorgeous sunset. Huge thank you to the staff at Dear Irving On Hudson, especially Edwin, Stafford, and Lisa, for making our experience enjoyable. I enjoyed it! My boyfriend and I came here for a casual dinner before watching a musical nearby. Views are epic and the bathrooms were nice. Dear Irving is located on the top of the Aliz hotel. Check in at the desk by the elevators. I recommend a reservation for a guaranteed spot with no wait. The elevators are a little slow as they are shared with the hotel patrons. Once you are upstairs, check in with the host up there as well. We were sat at window seats which made for awesome views! The seats were comfortable and there was a coat hook located at every seat. We had a gin Rickey special for Gatsby day and fries and croquettes. We shared chocolate mousse for dessert. The plates are shareable but small so order more if you are very hungry! We also tried some of their gin drinks. I had the Sparrow and my friend had the Driftwood. All very interesting complex flavor profiles. Service was great and super attentive. We were frequently checked on. The manager Margaret was so kind! There's an outdoor balcony with awesome views of the Empire State Building. Sound level was average though they do turn up the music at a certain point. Two bathrooms and they were both super clean. I've been to the Irving Place location a number of times but this was my first time to the Hudson Hotel Rooftop location. Cocktails are amazing at both locations. The vibes are different, both locations are great but if you are looking for something a bit more open seating wise and incredible views of this city then you'll want to come here. Came here on a Saturday night and loved this venue and how it overlooks the city. We were on the 41st floor where it was quiet enough to have a conversation and sit comfortably on the couches. The creative cocktails and food were very tasty (got the sliders and fries). Later on we were moved to the 40th floor since the 41st was closing. Truly amazing and breathtaking, especially at sunset. And as one would expect, the menu items are pricey! There is a 20% gratuity automatically included. My mocktail (the 90's) was so tasty BUT overflowing with ice chips so it was literally only a few tiny sips of actual beverage. My husbands alcoholic drink was fine.. but again, pricey, as you would expect. So two drinks (one being non alcoholic) plus the tip added on was almost $50. But you're paying for the views, and that has to be included in your decision to come here and spend the money. It was worth it but it's not our usual vibe. This is a must go if you are visiting the NYC area. A reservation is definitely helpful but if you're lucky like us you'll still get seating without. There are two areas of the rooftop bar, a lively more crowded open area with a DJ and bar, or a lounge area with lots of reserved seating. Both ends have a view but are definitely different vibes. The view in this place is absolutely breathtaking. You get keyed up to the 40th floor by the hostess and walk into a boujee bar with huge windows showing the city. The staff was super friendly and offered explanations and advice on drinks. I'm pretty picky with cocktails and didn't find one I was in love with but I had a lot of fun sitting at the window people watching and admiring the buildings. I highly recommend trying to snatch the seats right at the windows. There is also a balcony and a nice view of the Empire State Building! read more

This bar does not have a gluten-free menu. The way the menu is written is deceptive. It has "GF" written next to various items on the menu, but when you speak with the server, he will tell you that those items are fried in a fryolator with other items that contain gluten. I asked if there was a separate fryolator, and he said there is only one. Thus, they cannot claim those items are gluten-free. This is disappointing, because my cousin is Celiac and one of the main reasons we chose this bar was because we checked the menu online and it seemed to have gluten-free items. All she could eat was the nuts. :( That being said, we enjoyed this place for all of the other reasons mentioned by other reviewers: - Beautiful decor and views - Great drinks (although Manhattan prices) - The food we did have was good, namely the tuna and the lobster guacamole I would come back here, but not with people who have Celiac Disease. read more

It is mostly inside, with a small outdoor balcony area. I personally prefer the 41F, which has a more luxurious feel, but my recent visits have been to the 40F. The 40F has some seats by the windows to enjoy the stunning views, as well as a couple of seats outdoors on the balcony and more comfortable sofa seating inside. Every time I've visited recently, they've had an event on the east side, facing Times Square. The west side still has views of Hudson Yards, and also south views, from the balcony. However, during my most recent visit, the party on the other side was so loud with their screaming and cheering every few minutes it was quite disturbing and we could barely hear ourselves talk. As with many other rooftop bars, you are here for the views and experience. Cocktails are $19 with an additional 20% service charge automatically added to your bill. So I was not pleased with our latest experience, but as long as you don't have to deal with excessively loud parties, you should be fine. read more
