You have to make a reservaton here, my husband said they are typically booked out a month in advance. He brought me here for my bday. It's dimly lit speakeasy vibes remind me of NY restaurants and I loved the atmosphere. The music was some of the best I've ever heard in a restaurant, no pop music, no elevator music, straight R&B classics like old school Drake (pre-hair bows) and Frank Ocean. I was vibing all night thanks to the playlist. They have HH M-F 3-7pm and the waygu burger is $5 off during HH, that's the only food item available on the HH menu. We went on a Monday and they had a $55 Monday dinner special where you choose 2 appetizers, 1 entree, and one dessert to share between 2 people. Service: The staff was friendly and not overbearing. The only thing that caught me off guard was when we were seated the waitress said we had a 2 hour time limit, I'm used to bottomless brunch having a time limit but not dinner. It was a little off putting but I totally get it. By that same token, we didn't feel rushed while dining, so the time limit is fine by me. I enjoyed watching the bartenders mix up drinks. Food & Drinks: We ordered the hummus with waygu waygu burger with fries, and crab cake. Everything was tasty. Thus was the star of the show with freshly buttered, warm, and soft pita bread. The hummus was smoothie and the topped waygu was perfect. The only thing that would've taken it up a notch was a few pepperoncini peppers, there were about 3 slices of thin slightly pickled jalapeños on top. The crabcake entree only came with one crab cake, so to me, it's more of an appetizer because most establishments serve 2 crab cakes with their entrees. The waygu burger was tasty but I ordered it without the truffle aioli because I can't stand the smell of truffle. My husband ordered the old fashioned which he enjoyed and said was strong, I ordered a zero proof mocktail (no alcohol) and it was delicious. Th mocktail was $8. Issues: I ordered my fries and burger without the truffle. The burger was served without the truffle but my fries came with truffle on it. When my new batch of fries came, they no longer had parmesan on them (unless the truffle is in the parmesan, which I doubt because I tasted the truffle in a fry without parmesan) I still wanted parmesan. So I was served plain fries, with no parm and not even any salt on them. I didn't even send back the 2nd batch of fries because I didn't want to be a nuisance. The receipt came and I noticed they didn't charge us the HH price for our waygu burger which should've been $5 off. The menu said the burger was $26 (regular priced) and to add fries would be $3, so it should've been $29. We were charged $30 (which is $1 extra anyway). The price for our burger and fries should've been $24 ($21 + $3), so I let the waitress know and she said "oh that's an old menu, the price on the burger went up by $5, let me get my manager" so they adjusted the price and made it right. Online it still says the old price of $26 and it's kinda sleazy to increase the price by $5 just to make the burger the old regular price during HH. You open this large wooden door that leads you down a short, dimly lit staircase into mystery and sensuality. It's a decadent space with decadent drinks to match. Cloud IX - a delicious drink, reminiscent of cotton candy but not overly sweet. A nice balance of sweet and sour. Mo-Fiyah - an excellent smoky/spicy mescaline cocktail. It's enlivens your taste buds. The actual creation of the drink only adds to the thrill (I won't tell...) Burrata - i wanted to love this dish and Would've, had it not been drenched in sooo much peach sauce. Chef, please exercise restraint with this, going forward. LOVE this place! The speakeasy feels cozy, with bar and stool seating on one end and booth seating in another. Incredible bartenders who are super knowledgeable and high energy. It reminded me of a speakeasy bar with very dark décor. If you like a lot of light and ambiance, this is not the place for you. I'm NOT saying this in a derogatory way; as they say, "different strokes for different folks." I didn't mind it because a friend recommended it and I was meeting her there to try it out. Their Crispy Calamari was seasoned and cooked to perfection with all the fixings. Of course, it's all about sharing, so we tried the Tuna Tartare Nachos, Gambas al Ajillo, and the Truffle Parmesan Fries. Once we shared these dishes, we were too full to eat an entrée. Salt for me is always a hard place to decide if I love or just think is fine. I'm from NYC and have lived in Manhattan for years so Rosslyn is far from my favorite place to be, but when travelling for work Salt is incredibly convenient for me to go to and in terms of being "NY-lite" fits the bill, while also being the antithesis of NY. Salt bills itself as a speakeasy, but it has a pretty easy to find glass door that leads to a hostess stand with a lot of people who clearly have never been to a speakeasy inside. However, the crowd is far more refined than upstairs at Open Road, or anywhere else in the neighborhood. The booths are also far sexier and the lighting far better than anything else around. Which means that when making a recommendation, just on ambiance alone if we're going to remain in Rosslyn, we might as well choose Salt. Then comes the food - it's again the most inventive food in Rosslyn, great concepts around tuna tartare, solid meatballs, burger that really takes the cake with interesting ingredients and additions. But, it's not pushing the envelope in any way, it's like they took the best of 2019 and put it on the menu. And it's good, but it reminds you that you're still in a corporate office building's basement. It's hard to hate on perfectly executed calamari with a spicy vietnamese aioli or really solid gambas spanish tapas style - but again, I've been eating that for well over a decade. You should get both though if you do dine, and the burger, it's just really great. The cocktails are good too, and sometimes slightly more inventive. Nothing is bad, but nothing is going to have you submitting this for best bar in the world. I will keep coming back to Salt because it is the Best of Rosslyn - but I do hope it would push the rest of Rosslyn to try a bit harder. read more

Came here with a few friends on a Friday evening around 6:30 and got to grab a chair from the bar and pull it up to a small table they had available which was a nice surprise (we were expecting a wait). The speakeasy ambiance is on point and the staff is even more on point! Lovely souls and friendly people work here! The Wagyu Burger was amazing and the truffle fries were also great. Our waiter was Roman and he was very attentive and encouraging in terms of what to try without hovering. I started with the purple haze, it was delicious but it felt like more foam than drink which for the price was a bit of a let down. We shared: Waygu Meatballs - amazing texture and the sauce was so rich and savory Calamari - the consistency of the calamari was perfect and the sauce served with it was a great balance of salty and sweet and the pickled onions put it over. This was a surprisingly nice find. They attempt to make a sterile new office building space seem somewhat interesting. It's a little like the faux urbanity you get in a suburban restaurant, but at least they're trying. Nicely accommodating of gluten free diners. Began with the filet sliders. We didn't notice "filet" and were surprised by how substantial they were. They were essentially little steaks that were served in a light blue cheese, creme fraiche (??) topping. Serving them in lettuce leaves to be GF worked well, with the added crunch from the leaves. They were good! The tuna togarishi was several slices of medium rare tuna, served over julienned carrots, edamame and pickled ginger. It was in a light dressing. The crabcake was small but good, without any filler. It came with asparagus (way out of season for December!), fingerlings in a nice, light mustard sauce and... something else. It was thinly sliced, slightly pink, crunchy in a slightly horseradishy sauce. It was quite good, as were the potatoes and crab cakes. They only had 5 wines by the glass, but fortunately the Nebbiola was tasty. All in all, good, solid food, with some creativity to elevate it beyond the lameness it could have easily had. read more

My friend and I grabbed a drink on a Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. There was a healthy flow of people, but we found two seats at the bar. Here's our experience: 1) Drinks: The menu has lots of options, but none that satisfied my berry-sweet-style of cocktails. Because of that, the bartender offered to make me an off-the-menu cocktail he was clearly excited about. He said there's nothing like it in the area- a coke and rum cherry float. It didn't register what he was making me until he presented a tall glass of coke and rum half empty to leave room for whipped cream. It was too late to go back. As a boy, I once threw up on a float and can't drink carbonation and cream. I took one sip and wanted to vomit. Not the bartender's fault; I ordered wrong. My friend ordered a Negroni and thought it was just okay. He asked for it "up" and the bartender had no idea what he was asking. His Negroni was average at best. 2) Service: It was very slow. It took a long time for the bartender to serve us or give us the bill. They were busy but but overwhelmingly. Where I'll knock off starts is how they handled me not finishing my drink. Again, that was my mistake for ordering wrong. However, a savvy bartender would find a unobtrusive way to ask if I wanted another. Instead, he acted offended. 3) Price: Since I ordered wrong, all I have to go off of is my friend's average Negroni. Cocktails were around $15. Even for the D.C. area, that's expensive! For quality cocktails, it's a fair price, but not for average ones. 4) Vibe: This is where they excel. It's simple, but screams speakeasy. The lights are dim and the tables are intimate. 5) Neighborhood: We found street parking out front and it's free after 8 p.m. There are many fast casual restaurants in the area. This is one of the few speakeasy bars in the area. It means, it is a little discreet to get to but that's by design. You reach the place from the Wilson blvd and go to the side that says Open door. Open door is the (sister) restaurant for the bar. Fun fact: Arlington cannot have bars unless they also serve food. So there's that. Open door is on the 2nd level and Salt is in the basement. Once the tricky part is done and you reach this really cozy place. Almost all the tables were full when we went on a Saturday night but it didn't seem noisy at all. The lighting, the mood and the music made it felt like we were the only people. We went there for a small farewell dinner for my friend and it was exactly the kind of place we wanted. Now the food and drinks. The food was salty to live upto the name but I think it does complement the well thought out handcrafted drinks they made. I had heirloom and it came with this giant ice rose and a dried petal on the side. The drink was strong, tasty and had a punch of cinnamon flavor. My friends had Paloma, Gran papa and Gin. They were all excellent. For food, I had the Gnocchi. It was sooo sooo good. One of the tastiest gnocchi I ever had. The roasted mushrooms and Brussels sprouts added to the mass while the butternut squash and Brown butter added to the smoothness. The candied walnuts added a nice crunch. The surprise element was this crispy sage. Had no idea sage could be added that way. Nice touch "Salt". I'm Impressed. Tuna tartare nachos were realllly good. Strongly suggest that appetizer. The pasta that togarashi crusted tuna came with was way too salty(even the drinks couldn't help it). Glad it was only a small portion and we all had a bite. Overall this is a very different take on a bar food and we thoroughly enjoyed it but I'm still wondering what's the targeted customer base for a salty restaurant. read more

I went to salt on a Friday night with reservations via OpenTable. My friend and I arrived 10 min early and were sat right away. Other parties that just walked in were told a wait of at least 2 hours so I would highly suggest making reservations beforehand. The ambiance was super classy and nice. It's perfect for a date night. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was on the saltier side while still yummy. So I would ask for less salt next time I visit. The mock-tail I ordered was also yummy. They took us on time for our reservation and our waiter was very attentive to us the whole time. We got the seared tuna, filet sliders, and, the gnocchi. The tune was my favorite, it had so many flavors going on. The drinks were also very good. They even gave me free cheesecake for my birthday which was a nice surprise. I have been to Salt, 3 times, first 2 were great, the last time was a "mess" bad service, I had a group of people supposed to have a "reserved area" turned out I had to do most of the service during our gathering. I had to ask multiple times for the staff for glasses, to please clean the mess as people could break glass or get hurt. Also, we had a reservation for over a month and I was asked for contract as soon as we arrived to eat. Are you serious? They had over 4 weeks to ask for a contract but I was told it was not needed. Ambience: Fit for any occasion! It wasn't fancy. People were wearing casual attire, and some people were also dressed up a lil, some had just come from work. So anything works! Service: Everyone is really friendly and serves with a smile on their faces. I especially appreciated the manager, Michael, the night we ate here. We were seated in the bar area and got some cocktails to start which were very inventive and delicious (got one that tastes like pho). Will definitely be back to try out others in the future. Unfortunately the food left something to be desired. Starting with the positives. The wagyu burger and fries were delicious. Well cooked and perfectly constructed. Granted the price point is a bit higher but during happy hour you can get $5 off. The remaining dishes however were all mediocre at best. I recently started going to Salt and I don't know how I have lived without it. Definitely make reservations because it books up fast, especially on the weekends. The food and drinks were are amazing. My favorite drink right now is the Girls Just Wanna Have Pho, which is a shockingly souplike flavor in a cocktail. Perfection. But I haven't had a drink there I didn't like. Love the lavender haze, what's up doc, the mezcal one, the mushroom one, all good. The food is great too. I like all the small plates and my favs are the gnocchi and the tuna tartare.
