We went last week for a friend's birthday. The ambience is beautiful. The food and drinks were hit and miss. The watermelon crush and the blue crab Rangoon were the highlights of the meal- absolutely amazing! Everything else was fine but not worth the price. The biggest disappointment was how the staff had a laissez faire attitude to the fact we were celebrating my friend's birthday. Despite it being noted on our reservation as well as mentioning it to our waitress, and the manager; the team did nothing to make the dinner special for my friend's birthday- even the act of wishing her a happy birthday. I really want to love this place. I'm giving it 4/5 stars because I'm weighing heavily for potential and giving credit to the beautiful attention to interiors and ambiance, but the food is really lacking. My visit is probably more objectively rated a 2/5. The Angie needs an immediate and aggressive overhaul of its menu and approach to food if it's going to survive, and I'm rooting for them. First, the good: The staff is attentive and very accommodating. Everyone went out of their way to take care of my companion and me throughout the meal and cocktails. 5/5. The ambiance: it's a genuinely beautiful space with the potential to become a neighborhood staple if they iron out the kinks. My spouse and I eat out four times a week, usually at the same places in this neighborhood -- we are their target audience. The "needs attention" category: They need to dramatically pare down the menu and focus on executing fewer items well, maybe rolling with some seasonal offerings to change things up for regulars. Also, in at least one case: describing them more accurately on the menu. Everything we ordered, other than one cocktail, was disappointing, and everything was overpriced by 25-35%, easily. Moscow mule: This was off-menu, but my dining companion called it perfect. The lychee margarita: I asked for it to be less sweet, and the staff delivered on that. The problem is it arrived without ice, in a coupe glass, with no salt rim. That's not a margarita, that's something else entirely. It was fine, and tart as I'd asked, but I'd ordered based on the menu description, and I noticed the spicy margarita being served over ice in a highball at the bar, the classic way. To their credit: when I asked the waiter if my drink matched the description and requested a highball with ice, he delivered quickly and without any fuss. The chicken club: My dining companion said the chicken was dry, and the avocado on top was visibly browned, as if it had been sliced well before service. He's not a picky eater, so his verdict was telling when I asked how it was. Essentially: "The chicken is dry, the fries are lukewarm and soggy. When you're paying $30 for a chicken sandwich, you expect the chicken to be without complaint at a minimum, and preferably the star of the show." My clam flatbread: A huge miss, and an odd choice at that. It was so heavily loaded with cheese that it turned gluey and unpalatable, you couldn't even taste the clams which were plentiful though clearly canned. I'd expected a thin, crisp flatbread brushed with plenty of chopped garlic and olive oil, parsley, and a smattering clams, finished with just a microplane of a strong cheese on top. The way they actually served it was as if a Dominos line cook stepped in. That costs the kitchen more than the version I'm describing would. And I suspect, more would be happy with my version, which would cost the restaurant less to make. Bread: The complimentary bread was a nice touch, and plentiful. I'd suggest proper French bread, served more sparingly. The butter was good, though I'd add a touch more salt. Still a nice gesture, and another spot where they could actually save money. Beer: Good, a little foamy but good. In short: I really hope management reads this. You have all the ingredients for an exceptional gem, and my spouse and I are exactly your target audience. We want to be a once-a-week regular. Desperately. read more

This review is mostly for the For Five coffee inside, but the interior of The Angie is 5 stars. Ok so it's a typical Sunday morning in Ballston. Girlfriend dog bagels All you need is coffee. I've been to For Five before and if I remember correctly the Clarendon /Courthouse location seemed very pricey relative to comparable coffee shops (and you wow they are still pricey, keep reading). Well they just opened a up a spot in The Angie in Ballston which was on our walk home so we hopped in because the coffee is good. We step inside and the whole place looks beautiful and stylish. It's a brand new restaurant and the contractors and designers really did their thing. It was probably expensive and I guess they're trying to make up for that by charging an arm and a leg for coffee. One small latte cost us $8.91 which would have had me questioning the barista but I already had my dog in one arm and we left and only noticed the receipt later. But the coffee is fantastic. So maybe they are charging their worth? If you can afford it then no worries, definitely go for it, it's delicious! P.S. The Angie/Bar Angie is great and we love the food at the Foggy Bottom location. We haven't eaten here yet but it's probably equally good. read more

Just as I expected, another new restaurant with prices that will bankrupt you and service that will leave you confused on why you have to pay a 4% operation fee. We came in for brunch and it wasn't super packed. I can only imagine service when this place is busy. They have a little cafe in the front, a small bar, and then tables in the back which are very close together like typical french style. It's a very visually stunning spot but that's about it. I was last in the group to show up and no one asked my drink order for 10+ minutes. Instead I sat and watched the bar cart show of them making the Aperol spritzes. I feel like it would have been nice to not wait 20+ minutes to order my drink plus about 15+ to get my said drink. We kept getting random things sent to the table which were incorrect, such as a lemonade. Turns out later we were told that they dont have a key code for OJ in their system so its marked as lemonade. They also didnt bring out the free bread until the meal was basically over, which I found bizarre. Espresso martini was tasty but $19 which is robbery. Everything on the menu is so expensive, like a small french onion soup is $17. The whole soup itself probably cost $8 to make but I am charged $17 for a cup of soup the same size Panera serves. It had a good flavor but for the first time of my life, I have to say they had way too much cheese on top. I spent half the time digging through cheese to get to my 4 sips of soup. Most of the party got eggs benedict, which looked visually pleasing but the eggs were not runny and overcooked and the bread was really hard to cut. The pancakes were a hit but we had to ask twice for syrup - not sure why syrup doesn't come out with pancakes already. Things like extra cappuccinos or a side of bacon took a bit to come out and always caused confusion for the waiter. At the end of the meal, they charge a 4% operation fee. Look I hope service is ironed out with time but the pricing alone matched with abhorrent service makes me never want to go back. (Or I'll be back for the 10$ martini HH only) read more

The ambiance is nice but the noise level is unbearable. Literally had to shout to hear the person right next to me. The food was WAY overpriced. I ordered the Fruits de Mer...tiniest clams I've ever seen and about 1/4 the amount of pasta that should have been delivered. The others in my party said their food was "meh". Tried this new spot in Ballston after having been to Bar Angie in West End. Although I like the overall environment, the food quality doesn't quite justify the price point. Nothing was bad, just not enough to fully back up the check. No happy hour that I could see either, which felt like a missed opportunity. When the price-to-quality ratio is a stretch, a happy hour is usually what gets people in the door anyway. The service okay. We had a reservation for 4 but let them know it was actually 3, and they seemed put out by the change. Then the host sat us with only one menu for the three of us, and our server had to make a separate trip back with the other two. Combined with the overall slow service, it added up. The interior itself is genuinely nice, but the tables are packed in tight and felt cramped as there's a lot of foot traffic between guests and staff. Given how many strong French spots are in Georgetown (only 15 min away) and Cafe Colline right up the street on Glebe, I feel like this place has real competition for anyone looking for a go-to French spot in the area. I feel like a touch of an identity crisis going on at Angie. On the one hand, an upscale chic French bistro w $20 cocktails, on the other - a rowdy sports bar equipped w an enormous TV and an obnoxious Sunday afternoon crowd. I get it, the World Cup. Blah blah blah but also why are you seating me as close to the restroom hallway AND the screaming bar when the entire restaurant is otherwise empty? This is just not the atmosphere I'm looking for. There are a dozen other sports bars in the area that the Ballston bros can go to. The staff's inexperience continued to shine - appetizers and entrees were all brought out at once so by the time I tried my entree it was lukewarm. Plates weren't cleared, even after the check was dropped. We were not checked in on until after we were essentially finished w our meal. Some sort of auto ops charge is included, which is rich. Food was solid. Shrimp cocktail was fresh. Branzino was light and pleasant. The burrata flatbread was ok. I was surprised by the portion size and the generosity of tomato but wished the dough was a bit softer/less crispy. I had 2 cocktails that were devoid of alcohol. On the flip side, my friend said her martini was super strong. Overall, if I'm in the area, I'm heading to Salt Line or Carbonara instead. read more

A nice, brand new French restaurant in a brand new building on Fairfax Drive. Nice tall ceiling, though very noisy due to poor sound design. Large TV at the bar near entrance. Rowdy crowd because World Cup is on. Took photos of the menu for everyone, since their menu is hard to find. Note that the Lobster Frites is $78 Their tables and chairs on the patio are so very Parisian (facing toward the street, the same kind of French pattern typical of cafes in Paris). They just had a grand opening (French colored balloons are still out front). Very nice patio to the side surrounded by plants and away from the cars. We were here during dinner time on a Saturday and weather is very hot. Since the place is so noisy and full we did not get a table. Might come to give it a try next time. read more

Paris has landed in Arlington. The Angie is a French Brasserie that operates like it has been there for years not just two weeks. Service was very good for such a busy place. Is it loud and busy yes, but it adds to the experience and vibe. It's the new place to be and be seen. A large bar takes up most of the front room and every seat was filled on Friday night. The star of the show is the food. Never had Crab Rangoon before and it was an excellent appetizer. When you order the steak frites you can select your cut of meat. I chose a filet. The meat was charred perfectly and melted in your mouth. There is a small up charge for the au poivre sauce which was excellent. The corn salad was also light and very tasty. Beignets for dessert came with Carmel and Chocolate sauce. Many tables order Crème Brûlée which appeared to be the most desired dessert. We were very satisfied with the beignets. If you are driving parking is available in the parking garage in the same building for $5.00 if you can't find street parking. We will definitely be back and try different entrees and enjoy crab Rangoon again and again. The Angie is a great new spot in Arlington that should be experienced. read more

I love the Angie! My two fiends and I tried it out opening week during the World Cup and it was so fun. I prefer the more casual and bright vibe of this place to Bar Angie in DC. It was still upscale, but with a large bar and TVs and lots of windows it felt lighter. The Caesar salad was amazing, it had these friend cheese croutons that were so delicious. The oysters were good, similar to the bar Angie ones. The burger and spinach dip were also great, and if you're a fry lover you have to try them! We also had some nice cocktails for dinner. The wait staff is super attentive and always makes sure your drinks are never low. Definitely will be trying this again read more

Pains me to write this review but I had high hopes for this new hot spot but left generally disappointed. Beautiful restaurant (patio and inside). Reminded me of cool, clubby restaurants in NYC. Started off on wrong foot, was told our reservation was at bar or high top table, which I don't recall booking with those options but after an eye roll, were were seated at a standard two-top. Fine. Service was uneven, I can overlook that too, within reason. Included in our reservation that we were celebrating a birthday. No acknowledgment of that, even when we ordered dessert. Lots of people celebrating with candles but none for us. Highlight of the evening was The Angie burger. Excellent in every way. Profiteroles were nicely done too. But not eager to return. read more

I was so excited to get a nicer sit down restaurant in Ballston, but as of now, the Angie is not it. We went opening weekend. Tables are super close together. It was really loud. Service was painfully slow. This seems par for the course opening weekend so we let it slide. I assume the arrive will improve. But, man, the food was not good. Started with the bread basket. How did they manage to make bread bad? French places usually have the best bread. Then I got the $78 lobster frites. The lobster was super over cooked and bland. They say it's 2lbs of lobster but most of that weight is the inedible parts. My husband's duck was the tiniest portion, maybe 4-5 oz and also bland. The service was so slow we didn't bother getting dessert and my husband left my pretty hungry. The drinks were fine though. If the Angie can get its kitchen together I could live with the high prices, and the overly loud cramped atmosphere. But, these prices for such mediocre food in such small portions? Having been to Bar Angie in DC, we knew the general vibe of this place coming in, and even for a new spot working out some kinks, it didn't disappoint. The service was solid, with the server warning us that drink orders may take a while but they ended up coming out quickly. The food was great, love that we have the ability to get that DC Bar Angie / Le Dip feel, right in Ballston (which often lacks a lot of good restaurants, and is full of chain fast food). We got the blue crab rangoons again, which are pricy but full of crab and approved by me (a Marylander). The burger is also a classic and didn't disappoint. New things we tried were the burrata flatbread, and french dip, both of which were fantastic. Overall - yeah, this place is pricy, but it's an actual good restaurant in Ballston (sorry, Carbonara). We've gone twice now, on opening night and for brunch. This restaurant brings such an energetic vibe to the area crossing upscale esthetic with tasty American fresh cuisine. Although busy on opening night, we were welcomed with champagne and enjoyed for free the whole night. The burger was so good, delicious prime dip, and the Ceaser salad was one of the best I've had. I will say for the area it is certainly pricier than what we are used to, however for good food with good portions surrounded by familiar cliental makes it worth while. I'm measured based off how I perform. I attached the ring pop picture for a reason. The fact that I sucked that ring pop ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM -- that how long we waited for our check. I then literally got up to go to the front, and 1. The waiter got our check wrong 2. The front desk person was struggling to ring up our check. Granted, it was a Friday night and they're super busy -- but if I was a business, beyond caring for the guest -- I'd probably want to prioritize getting paid LOL. I only felt inclined to leave a review because for the prices that the Angie is charging -- the service DOES NOT match that energy. If you're gonna charge $18 plus for a cocktail, you gotta match that energy. Northside social down the street charges like $5 for their mimosa that's FIRE and it comes in like a minute -- so if you're gonna be high scale, you need high scale service. read more

The Angie is new to Arlington and from reviews & our experience, it seems it is already having an identity crisis. A restaurant can't be both a bro sports bar & a French-style brasserie and expect to succeed. Arlington is one of the wealthiest counties in the country; while many people can afford & enjoy fine dining, the overall experience has to be great. While my husband & I enjoy eating out, as a couple & with friends, very few restaurants in the Clarendon-Ballston are quiet enough to allow comfortable conversation. Restaurants in this area generally have extremely loud background music, so we avoid them because when we go out, we like to talk. The designers of the Angie gave a lot of attention to every design detail and the overall ambience, but not to sound insulation. Maybe the owners will change some things based on early reviews; if not, this restaurant will be short-lived. Having lived here for 30 years, it is really disappointing that there are so few restaurants that allow conversation without shouting while eating. Willow might be one of the last restaurants that offered such a local experience, and it was driven out of business by an exorbitant rent increase, which left the space vacant for many years. read more

Not only did the abysmal quality and quantity of the food come no where close to the Michelin-star bill, the restaurant appeared to be poorly managed and overwhelmed by its crowd. Making a reservation days in advance still led us to wait 30 minutes for an open table. While I understand that The Angie is still working through some kinks having just opened, the dining experience was somehow a coagulation of bland, overwhelming, and kitschy. The Angie is just what Ballston needs, and I hope that it can deliver once the bugs are worked out. While there are many, very good places to eat in Ballston, but there is a real lack of nice sit down restaurants so it's great to see the Angie move in. First, the space is absolutely beautiful. Very high ceilings (with maybe a bit too aggressive ceiling fans) you really feel like you stepped into a French cafe. I love that they are also owned by the same folks that own For Five Coffee and essentially turn into a cafe in the mornings. What a great idea and cant wait to stop by for morning coffee. The Angie has a great menu with a lot of variety. The prices are kind of all over the place. Some items are more than reasonable while others, like the Cesar Salad and Cake Slice (more on that later) are pretty pricey. The service we had was excellent. There was plenty of staff and everyone was very attentive. There were some misses. One of the party had a dairy allergy, yet they brought their filet with a giant pad of butter. So that had to go back and be remade. When it came back it was over cooked. My Duck was also very overcooked. It should come out closer to medium rare and it was well done. The skin was crispy, which is great, but disappointing that the duck itself had been so badly overcooked. The flavors for both the filet and duck were excellent, and the French fries are outstanding. heck I would go back just for the fries. The Cesar Salad was also great, perfectly dressed, the fried cream cheese was awesome and it was a big portion. Im not sure it's worth $26, but i wasnt mad at it. Now I knew what I was getting in to by ordering an $18 slice of cake. But I wanted to support the business and give it a try, I mean they make it so prominent on the dessert menu it has to be good right? Nope. This is honestly criminal. I got it to go as I was already full from dinner, but tried a bit when we got home. Half the frosting was missing from the side of the cake, it was dry and basically was a single flavor throughout. It was a vanilla box cake that they charge you $18 for. No one should ever order it, ever. Ive seen others post that the portions are small. Nothing that I saw would make me think that any of the portions on anything are small. I hope some of these issues get worked out as the restaurant settles in. They are only a week old and we will definitely go back. I do think they need to rethink some of the pricing and just shore up some issues in the kitchen and The Angie will be a home run. read more

The Angie is an incredible new addition to Ballston. The vibes and atmosphere are extremely well done. The menu has so many great options, it was hard to narrow down what to order. But the food experience was very disappointing. To start, the shrimp cocktail was great and the portion was sizable. It went a bit downhill from there. The Frisée & Lardon salad lacked flavor, the dressing was on the bland side. The Wagyu French Dip looked promising, but the creamy horseradish lacked any flavor of horseradish and the au jus tasted like water. The sandwich is priced at $42 and doesn't even come with a side/fries. Added fries to the side (for $15) and they also lacked flavor. The menu advertises the fries coming with garlic aioli and ketchup - they were served with 3 sauces (none of which were garlic aioli). For a $100+ weekday lunch for 2 people, this was very disappointing. I really hope this restaurant can work out their early issues in the kitchen, and consider revising the prices. read more

Went here about 3 weeks ago. Everything felt very new. Beautiful interior. The pricing of this menu is inexplicable for where the restaurant is -- so pricey. Oddly, the restaurant was empty during weekend dinner time and the hosts seated us at a small bistro table in the middle of the empty room instead of one of their many available booths. The manager came up to us and said to not hesitate to let him or his staff know if we needed anything, which was nice. We then asked the hosts if we could move to more comfortable seating, and the hosts seemed very irritated. The move also took about 10 min -- even though all the tables were set and the restaurant was fairly empty. Service was a mess -- waiter came by infrequently, switched up our very simple drink order, and there were lots of bussers who kept coming by and did not know what to do (missing utensils, missing water, etc.) I am sure service will improve with time. Seems like the bar (which functions as a sports bar thanks to the TV) is the restaurant's priority. It was consistently busy, but it impacts the vibe of the rest of the restaurant. Indoors is quite LOUD. Very brasserie. Service is decent. Bar is efficient. The kitchen is fast; food came out quickly and hot. It's .... French, Lots of cheese, a bit salty and heavily sauced. The food is good but it's tough to say it's good enough to meet the elevated ambience and the cost. For example - the Angie steak frites is $69. Chez Billy sud is $47 le diplomate is $39. We had a French onion soup, a shrimp salad, a burger and one mixed drink a piece (gin and tonic and a Mule) - $140 before tip but included a 4% gratuity for kitchen staff - which seemed odd given price point. read more

The vegetarian options are scarce but that's par for the course. However, one of the servers did say they might change up the menu based on the preferences of the patrons and introduce more vegetarian options. Review for new prix fix lunch only. I have to say they delivered a fantastic experience on our recent lunch visit. Their $25 lunch specials include app/salad and an entree with some offerings having an up charge. The Caesar salads with fried cheese croutons were excellent and the shrimp cocktail ($5 addl) was a delicious outstanding value well worth the up charge. Chicken milanese with fries was a viking size portion or crispy moist cutlet and massive portion of good fries. Two of us had smash burgers which were terrific. It looks like the restaurant is genuinely trying to deliver after some negative reviews as service was spot on and even included them delivering some complimentary ice tea on this visit. Will definitely return to try other options. If you are looking for a great lunch option in Ballston The Angie is a great choice. read more

We had a reservation on Friday at 8:30, seated at 8:40- which is fine but it's worthy to note that we missed them calling us because of how loud it was. We were seated in the section near the kitchen, so the staff was rushing by us. Our waiter came by with our menus but didn't come back. After 20 minutes, we left because we had a time limit with the babysitter at home. Terrible croissant... soft and mushy. Very disappointed. Not to mention, it was almost $7.

The Angie in Ballston feels like a microcosm of modern Instagram culture: all aesthetic and no substance. While the restaurant attempts to project the facade of a high-quality French restaurant, the reality is a menu full of overpriced gimmicks designed for you to post your "adult happy meal" on social media over quality food. Our experience began poorly. Despite having a 7:30 PM reservation, the lobby was a chaotic swarm of people crowding the host stand, requiring us to navigate through a dense crowd just to check in. Once seated, the environment was uncomfortable. The noise level was so loud that carrying on a basic conversation was difficult, and the A/C and fans were blasting to the point that the dining room was freezing cold. The food execution was highly disappointing across the board: - Spinach Artichoke Dip: Completely bland and lacking seasoning. - Caesar Salad: The dressing itself was entirely flavorless, and the dish was weighed down by a strange addition of cream cheese puffs and terrible sesame seed croutons that didn't belong on a Caesar. - Little Neck Clam Pasta: For $40, the dish arrived with a meager six clams. The noodles themselves were entirely inedible--overly thick. and significantly undercooked. - Wagyu French Dip: The au jus lacked any flavor. It tasted like watered-down, microwaved grocery store Thanksgiving gravy. Service timing was equally flawed. We ordered two drinks after sitting down, but they did not arrive until an hour later, as we were finishing our entrees. Ultimately, The Angie prioritizes superficial presentation over fundamental kitchen execution and hospitality. If you are looking for a good experience in Arlington, save your wallet and go elsewhere. read more

The problem is that it was very LOUD! We recently went to the Angie, and the food was good. We started with an excellent chicken paté. The rigatoni was meh, but the French dip and trout almondine dine we very good. Because it's a new restaurant they obviously haven't taken the time to incorporate sound deadening materials into the decor. They need to do that ASAP! It's best to go at 8pm or later when there are less people inside. read more

They did a great job making a brand new space feel old and regal. Nice to have an upscale option in the area. Our server was great too. 5 stars for ambiance and service. Sadly their menu prices are exorbitant and the taste/quality of the food does not justify the price. A $35 cheeseburger? Really? The best thing was the bread basket- highly recommend if you're willing to spend $10 on bread. Maybe I'd go back for happy hour, but not for dinner with those prices sadly. read more
