Surreal Global Kitchen was a lovely spot for an alumni lunch and definitely lives up to its stylish name Food & Drinks We started with a Caesar salad and I ordered the Brazilian lemonade which was super refreshing without being overly sweet For my entrée, I had the Crispy Pillow Tuna Poke Bowl featuring sushi-grade tuna, jalapeños, mango, wakame, togarashi, nori, avocado, and rice pillow paper. The presentation was incredibly unique and visually stunning -- definitely one of those dishes that makes everyone at the table pause and ask, "Wait... what is THAT?" Flavor-wise, it was fresh and delicious, though I do think the portion size could be slightly larger. A bit more tuna and avocado would really balance it out. For dessert, I had the ube ice cream which was smooth, creamy, and a fun ending to the meal One thing I'd love to see improved is the gluten-free selection. The staff was knowledgeable about what I could and couldn't eat, which I appreciated, but the options were somewhat limited. I really wanted to try the burger but they don't currently offer gluten-free buns or bread. Even adding gluten-free bread or pasta options would make the menu feel more inclusive. ‍ Service The service throughout lunch was excellent. Staff members were attentive, professional, and knowledgeable about the menu and dietary restrictions. Food came out at a nice pace and everyone made our group feel well taken care of. Ambiance The restaurant itself is large, modern, and vibrant with a gorgeous wraparound bar that really anchors the space They also offer shared outdoor dining that would be perfect on a warm day. We dined in one of the private rooms which had beautiful natural light and comfortably seated our group of about 30 people. It felt elevated without being stuffy. A small but memorable touch was the warm hand towel service at the end of the meal where they poured mint-infused water over the towelette before handing it to us. Such a simple detail, but it made the experience feel elevated and thoughtful Overall Pricing felt fair and on par with other upscale casual restaurants in the area. Overall, Surreal delivers a creative dining experience with beautiful presentation, strong service, and a fun atmosphere. With a few more gluten-free accommodations and slightly larger portions on certain dishes, it would easily move into five-star territory for me. Came here for Mother's Day and it was the worse experience. Called 5 times prior to our reservation to let them know our large party would be there 10 minutes past the reservation time. No one answered the phone the phone and they gave our table away 2 minutes past the reservation start time. We proceeded to wait an additional 40 minutes for table. This is where we messed up. We should have just left. I have never received the most mediocre service and sub par food. Multiple people in my group left the restaurant hungry bc their food never came out. We ordered 2 eggs and multiple dishes with waffles which were never delivered after repeated reminders. All of the food was delivered cold. No modifications could be honored for a nut allergy. Random staff would show up to the table with the wrong food order. It was impossible to flag down a staff member to get a drink refill. If Surreal's kitchen and staff can't accommodate small plates for brunch they need to reduce their menu size and only offer à la carte. read more

This is a new place in Crystal city with a great vibe. It's in a fun spot with open windows and decorated beautifully. We sat at the bar for happy hour and were promptly served. It did take a minute to get the check though this can be attributed to understaffing. The pasta I had was great. It was well flavored and they even gave me some red pepper flakes to go with it. My friend and I came here for a quick brunch after a crazy morning in DC since this was so close to the metro station and were blown away by the beautiful ambiance, great service, and delicious food. I got a tomato ricotta pastry which was unique and tasty (I could have had 2 more) with a side salad and my friend had the breakfast plate which she enjoyed. The jam they gave was absolutely delicious (I think it was like a raspberry jam that they make in-house) and my server was kind enough to give us a few extra cups of it to take home. We weren't that starving but I want to come back to do their all you can eat option, that menu had a lot more options (like shakshsuka, avocado toast, etc) for just $35 pp. I will definitely be back for that! read more

I had high hopes for Surreal in Crystal City, but unfortunately the experience fell short. From the moment we arrived, it was very apparent that the staff wanted to close early. We were called prior that if we didn't show up for our reservation on time, they would close, and once we were there, we felt rushed the entire meal so they could go home. It created a very uncomfortable atmosphere and really took away from the experience. The food was disappointing. The spaghetti sauce lacked flavor, and the meatballs were honestly horribly cooked; dry, completely charred, and unpleasant. The menu overall felt strange and unfocused. That said, the interior is really cute and has a fun vibe. It might be an okay spot if you're just stopping in for a cocktail, but I wouldn't recommend it for dinner based on our experience. read more

Wow! Absolutely amazing brunch at Surreal. We'll definitely be back to try their dinner menu! The interior of the restaurant is gorgeous. The staff were all so friendly and attentive. It was overall an amazing dining experience. The food was delicious! The bread basket truly was a feast. It had the best croissant I've ever had - incredibly flakey and buttery. The potatoes that came with the eggs any way were delicious and had perfectly cooked onions adding great flavor. Went for dinner on a Saturday evening. This restaurant is in Crystal City - so weekends are generally not busy. The inside of the restaurant is well curated, a lot of live plants and bright colors. The menu and vibe is a mix of Alice in Wonderland and international vibes. Food was decent but the drink menu and bar tenders were the stars. This bar is well equipped to make a variety of drinks. Food is a mix of a lot of different types of genres. Food is cooked well and menu is small-ish. I had the ragu, not the worst and not the best. Came here on a Thursday evening and it was not crowded was able to get a seat right away. The menu was well-rounded and had some interesting twist to it. Breaks my heart to write a one star.... to be fair, this wasn't my choice for a dinner spot, it was chosen by a work colleague. but What a MISS. I don't know if they had an off day or were on purposely trying to make everything bad. We walk in for a group dinner of 8 and are given a "limited menu" with only a few items because our party is "too large", which is fine by me, but the other people in my party were not enthralled by the limited menu options. After much insistence, we were given the full menu. Not a great first impression. Things don't get better from there. The menu aims for "elevated" dishes with fine dining touches, and attempts a variety of items from different cultures. Key word - attempts. The menu is definitely priced VERY high - but it drastically fails on quality to live up to it. Appetizers - Oysters (a dozen for $39) - SUPER gritty. Not good. TBD on if I get food poisoning. Pillow Tuna Poke ($23) - the "pillow" on top was a fun twist and the seaweed salad was good, but the tuna poke quality was probably the worst I've had (tough, stringy, not fresh, very fishy). Again, TBD on if I get food poisoning. French Onion Soup ($16) - so weird, the onions are NOT caramelized (they are translucent white), and the whole thing had a weird vinegar flavor. Main Courses - I was hoping the main courses would save the night, as I asked our waitress what her favorite was and ordered that one, the Causa Frita ($29) - this was so incredibly salty, I almost had to force it down. Unfortunately, I was hungry. I had a few bites of the steak and it was probably the chewiest steak I have ever tried. The Mac and Cheese ($8) was also super weird, it was sweet and burnt at the same time. We were really sad that we wasted calories and dollars here :( I suppose the only plus was our waitress was a sweetheart. And the drinks were not bad. The interior was cool and hip too. This place has outdoor seating for large groups (we had 11 people), takes reservations, AND is covered in the rain. Yay!!! (You have no idea how hard it is to find outdoor seating where all three of those is true.) I had the excellent short rib ragout over tagliatelle. The husband had the bucatini marinara which was good but not as good as my short rib tagout. The daughter's mushroom prosciutto pizza was also excellent. Half fried chicken: 2.5/5 great portion to share for a table. Chicken cut into pieces. Crispy. But was that rosemary I tasted? just regular. The star of the show were the potato wedges that were crispy and the perfect amount of flaky salt. Just get the potatoes! Cheese Pizza: 2/5 there was plenty of cheese, so much it was falling off but still lacked flavor. Side of fries: did not eat but super small. Friends said they liked the potato wedges with the chicken better. Caesar salad: 3/5 what's a girl dinner without salad. This had capers which I love, but combined I guess with the salt in the salad dressing it was salty. Sat at the bar. Service was polite. My tequila drink was good. We selected this spot because the inside decor and ambiance looked really cool. I'd say it mostly held up in person. We were directed to the bar during the late afternoon as the dining area wasn't open yet. The bartender seemed fairly curt and unfriendly which was kind of a bummer. Additionally, everything here was very overpriced for what it was. Food portions on the apps and sides were tiny! I will say the flavor of the food and drink did seem decent. I didn't write a review for our first visit, as the food was "promising" - but the service was horrid and the food wasn't "worth" the price point and how hard you had to work to place an order was sad. We gave it one more shot because we are big fans of Enrique Limardo- oh how I wish we hadn't.....the service , what there was of it - was totally inattentive. The food was less than stellar, to say the least. Cocktails were "meh" at best and for that price point you can go down the block and get much better. The atmosphere, while inviting, is acoustically challenging - it gets Really Loud with just a few folks inside - if you must go here - dine outside- it's much more pleasant. I came to Surreal for a work event when I was at a conference. So to be fair I didn't really eat a meal I ordered but rather whatever the passed apps were for the event. All the apps were good but it wasn't filling so a few of us split the crispy oysters. They were interesting, I think in the fire I will stick with grilled or raw oysters on the half shell. The drinks were amazing! Their bartender knows what they are doing! I had three Eclipse in Blooms. And we had to try the Time Traveler's Tipple - just read the ingredients and tell me it doesn't sound interesting. The atmosphere is great but it was clear they didn't plan from a staff perspective to have enough bartenders to support the large even and almost full restaurant. Surreal is a beautifully decorated restaurant in the heart of Crystal City's restaurant row. Getting a reservation for an early dinner on a Friday evening was no issue. We got there a little before happy hour specials ended (at 6pm) but were a little sad those are only available at the bar. No biggie. As a starter, we got the Crispy Pillow tuna poke, which is served with a crunchy (fluffy) bubble that is great for scooping the poke, rice, and veggies it comes with. For my entree, I ordered the Causa Frita and it was delightful. This Peruvian dish was the right amount of comfort food (mashed potatoes), seafood mix (shrimp), and flavors that included red onions and some sort of spicy sauce that was a perfect balance to the rest. If Asian, seafood, and Peruvian are not your jam, fear not; there will be something on the menu for you, as there's pasta, pizza, and steak! read more

This place was very enjoyable! Came on a not so busy Saturday afternoon during brunch. I really enjoy the aesthetic with all of the plants and pretty patterns. It makes you want to dress a little nice. The latte didn't have a lot of flavor and the orange juice was really small with ice in it but it was freshly squeezed! The croissant breakfast sandwich is so delicious and filling! The croissant is perfectly soft and flaky and the eggs and bacon have a great flavor. A fan of Seven Reasons in D.C., a friend and I met for dinner on a Wednesday in May around 7:30 p.m. We had a reservation, but we didn't need one as the space is large with many types of seating inside and out. Here's our experience. 1) Food: With a menu that feels a bit chaotic (a reference from the TV show The Bear), you'll find Japanese-inspired food, a burger, pasta, pizza, and more. To start, my friend and I split the Caesar salad. It comes out on a big plate with fried capers. It was tasty and with the right amount of dressing. For our mains, he had the salmon and I the scallops. The flavors were stronger on the scallops with the sweet corn cream, apples, and more. However, the scallops were overcooked. For dessert, he had the key lime pie and I the chocolate lava cake. Both took awhile to come out, but they were tasty. The lava cake comes with three different containers- one for the cake, one for the ice cream, and one for the dulce de leche. 2) Drinks: The drink menu is massive with many cocktails, wine, and beer. We both enjoyed the Sauvignon blanc wine and thought the Parallel Universe Passion just okay. It wasn't very balanced. 3) Service: It was excellent from start to finish. 4) Space: It's a beautiful restaurant in a small park in Crystal City. It's spacious and well decorated. Solid 3.5 stars rounding up: I'll begin by saying the ambiance is really nice. I like the concept of bringing nature indoors, however me being nit picky, I think the clouds look like bubbles. My party arrived at 6:45pm on a Friday evening. My partner and I showed up quite late around 7:30pm and everyone had already placed their orders. Around 7:45pm my partner and I got asked if we wanted to order. Ultimately, the food came out around 8:10pm. I would say that the wait times are unbelievably long. Thankfully I personally didn't wait that long for the entree but dessert again took painfully long. From ordering to receiving it was a solid 25 minutes. The food was pretty decent. The table shared an appetizer of poutine our way. The chicken tasted burnt but the rest was nicely seasoned. 3/5. I got a bucatini Alfredo which was creamy and delicious, hitting my Alfredo craving. However it didn't come with a meat. It started at $19 and to add chicken, an extra $12; to add shrimp, an extra $14; to add salmon, an extra $17. At that point to add meat, id rather buy all the ingredients to make it at home. My partner got a Saigon beef sandwich. I personally thought it was a pineapple forward dish which I didn't like, but he said he tasted all the spicy beef first. It came with the most AMAZING fries with spicy aioli. Is it funny to say that the fries were my favorite dish? I got to try an Alfredo pizza slice and a margherita blanc with pesto. They were good but I wouldn't go out of my way for these pizzas as you can get better pizza elsewhere. The crust was just not pizza crust to me and the sauce and top could use a little more flavor. Lastly, the desserts were top notch: lava cake and ice cream was melt in your mouth delicious, and the pineapple upside down cake was the best pineapple upside down cake I've ever had --the right ratio of cake and fruit with a small scoop of coconut ice cream. I wish they served the same amount of coconut ice cream for the pineapple upside down cake as they did vanilla bean ice cream from the lava cake. The vanilla bean ice cream was essentially a pint of ice cream! One more thing I want to point out was that when restaurants sing happy birthday to a customer or bring out a candle, that one dish with the candle is usually compensated. Neither dessert was compensated which was a bit disappointing. I didn't get cocktails as I'd rather try them during happy hour. I will give them a second chance as they also serve breakfast and happy hour. Tldr; Decently flavored, creative food. Super slow service. High price to pay for both. read more

Environment What can you say - the space is beautiful especially on a nice breezy day when they have they glass doors open. I came by early to hang out at the bar and enjoy a drink while reading a book before joining my friends for dinner. That was a great time. Really loved the bar space and the overall ambiance of the restaurant. Windows surround the space so it's plenty of light that adds to the ambiance. Lovely place. Service The bar service was a bit slow at times as it took a while for me to get a second drink and to close out for dinner. The service for dinner was a step up - our server was knowledgeable and very helpful. Food and drinks Overall the food was okay. The stand out was the guacamole that I had at the bar. The alfredo I had for dinner was just okay and the the chocolate lava cake was hyped up to me but didn't land the same. It was solid. The drinks were tasty, creative and overall good - another highlight for this place. I would come back for them. Overall Beautiful space with really good drinks and a great ambiance. I met a couple of friends here for dinner. I ate an hour early with my kids so I didn't get a chance to eat dinner there. I did have some oysters and their spicy house sauce was not bad. They do have valet parking for $8 which was nice. Cash only but they have an app that you can scan and pay with. The service was great! The waiter refilled our water when it was low and didn't hover. Plenty of seating area. The ambiance was surreal. It's got that magical feel and good to meet up for happy hours, catch up with friends, or date night. Was very excited to try this place and overall I'm very pleased. I also love when a place that's aesthetically pleasing also has good food/drink. Went on a Thursday so getting a reservation for 6 wasn't hard. There was a decent amount of customers in but not overwhelming at all. Service was slow, maybe they're still working out the kinks since they're new but definitely room for improvement there. The drinks (specifically the Parallel Universe) were VERY good. The food menu seems a bit random with having sandwiches, pasta, pizza, seafood, etc but it was nice to have a bit of everything. The chips for the guac were kind of hard to eat as they felt stale. I enjoyed the Veal Parm way more than I thought it would, must've been the sauce. My friend said great things about the pizza and pasta, my friends who ordered the scallops were still hungry afterwards so they ordered dessert (cheesecake and pineapple cake) and were pleased with those. Visited here yesterday 2/6/24 for my baby sisters 19th Birthday. The menu is very different from most places I've been to so far. The restaurant for sure lives up to the name. As a foodie this menu will for sure turn your tastebuds upside down and around in the best way possible. I ordered the Hokkaido Scallops & Corn, it was so delightful and flavorful! I paired my entree with a glass of Catena (white) wine which was suggested by our waiter who was extremely nice, and attentive. I was with my family so it was a total of 6 of us. My dad wanted appetizers so he ordered some wings for all of us. I didn't try them but my family said they were good and the dipping sauce was yummy as well. In general the feedback I received from my family was that everyone was satisfied with their drinks and food. Now on to the decor. This place definitely sets a vibe as soon as you enter. We went at night so the lighting was very mellow which allowed the vibrant colors in the space to pop. It was very comfortable were we sat and the plants around us just really enhanced the mood. At the end of the night my sister and I went to the bathroom and I know it may sound crazy but we were really really impressed by the interior design in that section lol. There was mirrors and individual bathrooms that were so cute (lol) and very very clean. The whole restaurant was very clean and lovely. The service, ambiance, cocktails and desserts at Surreal are the true star of the show. I can't remember the last time I had a lava cake or pisco as good as I had here. Unfortunately, that is where it ends. The food, being Latin and Asian fusion influenced is always doing a bit too much. The star Bahn mi is both too sweet and also too spicy. The swordfish crudo has just way too much pickled items with the caper berries and gherkins while loading on the cream and Doritos. The tuna poke, while fresh and instagrammable, is too sweet. The food feels like something I would get whilst eating at an upscale hotel restaurant. While that isn't bad, it isn't great either and that is the perspective I want to keep here. That being said, Surreal is absolute worth the trip for a few cocktails and desserts with friends, surprisingly good value, and suitable for lots of different palettes.
