I really enjoyed my meal at Surreal. I had the mushroom and spinach omelette with a side of applewood-smoked bacon, plus the roasted beet and goat cheese salad, and everything was delicious. The omelette was especially good--light, fluffy, and finished with a nice touch of salt and chives. Their hot sauce was amazing too, and I loved it on the eggs. One thing I really appreciated was their $35 prix-fixe-style option, where you can choose as many items from the menu as you want and they serve them in smaller portions. That was such a great option, especially for an expensive DC brunch, because it let me try several things without committing to full-size entrées. The bread basket was also tasty, and overall the food and experience were great. I did remove one star because I indicated that I cannot have fresh garlic due to a dietary intolerance, but some of the bread contained visible pieces of fresh garlic. The restaurant has an open-concept design where you can see much of the kitchen and bar while still having a full view across the dining area. There's also outdoor seating available. With the floor-to-ceiling windows, it's a great spot to hang out whether it's a sunny afternoon or a rainy day. Salmon -- I had the salmon lunch dish, and it was excellent. The sauce, potatoes, and vegetables all paired really well together. The portion size was perfect -- filling enough to satisfy you without leaving you overly full. Artisan coffee -- I tried the lavender latte on my waitress's recommendation, and it was fantastic. Highly recommend. They also have an impressive in-house espresso machine, and you can tell they take their coffee program seriously. We ordered branzino and salmon, paid $54 for a branzino that was completely flavorless sitting on top of a brown sweet sauce that totally ruined the fish and the salmon needed seasoning! My friend and I came here for a quick brunch after a crazy morning in DC since this was so close to the metro station and were blown away by the beautiful ambiance, great service, and delicious food. I got a tomato ricotta pastry which was unique and tasty (I could have had 2 more) with a side salad and my friend had the breakfast plate which she enjoyed. The jam they gave was absolutely delicious (I think it was like a raspberry jam that they make in-house) and my server was kind enough to give us a few extra cups of it to take home. Great experience overall. We decided to do the all-you-can-dream deal, which was worth it. This allowed us to try many different dishes. We were fortunate enough to be able to walk there because parking can be a challenge. You might luck out with street parking, or you can use the paid parking garage nearby. I had high hopes for Surreal in Crystal City, but unfortunately the experience fell short. From the moment we arrived, it was very apparent that the staff wanted to close early. We were called prior that if we didn't show up for our reservation on time, they would close, and once we were there, we felt rushed the entire meal so they could go home. Came here on a Thursday evening and it was not crowded was able to get a seat right away. The menu was well-rounded and had some interesting twist to it. I don't know if they had an off day or were on purposely trying to make everything bad. We walk in for a group dinner of 8 and are given a "limited menu" with only a few items because our party is "too large", which is fine by me, but the other people in my party were not enthralled by the limited menu options. After much insistence, we were given the full menu. Not a great first impression. Things don't get better from there. The menu aims for "elevated" dishes with fine dining touches, and attempts a variety of items from different cultures. Key word - attempts. The menu is definitely priced VERY high - but it drastically fails on quality to live up to it. Appetizers - Oysters (a dozen for $39) - SUPER gritty. Not good. TBD on if I get food poisoning. Pillow Tuna Poke ($23) - the "pillow" on top was a fun twist and the seaweed salad was good, but the tuna poke quality was probably the worst I've had (tough, stringy, not fresh, very fishy). Again, TBD on if I get food poisoning. French Onion Soup ($16) - so weird, the onions are NOT caramelized (they are translucent white), and the whole thing had a weird vinegar flavor. Main Courses - I was hoping the main courses would save the night, as I asked our waitress what her favorite was and ordered that one, the Causa Frita ($29) - this was so incredibly salty, I almost had to force it down. Unfortunately, I was hungry. I had a few bites of the steak and it was probably the chewiest steak I have ever tried. The Mac and Cheese ($8) was also super weird, it was sweet and burnt at the same time. We were really sad that we wasted calories and dollars here :( I suppose the only plus was our waitress was a sweetheart. And the drinks were not bad. The interior was cool and hip too. Came here for Mother's Day and it was the worse experience. Called 5 times prior to our reservation to let them know our large party would be there 10 minutes past the reservation time. No one answered the phone the phone and they gave our table away 2 minutes past the reservation start time. We proceeded to wait an additional 40 minutes for table. This is where we messed up. We should have just left. I have never received the most mediocre service and sub par food. Multiple people in my group left the restaurant hungry bc their food never came out. We ordered 2 eggs and multiple dishes with waffles which were never delivered after repeated reminders. All of the food was delivered cold. No modifications could be honored for a nut allergy. Random staff would show up to the table with the wrong food order. It was impossible to flag down a staff member to get a drink refill. If Surreal's kitchen and staff can't accommodate small plates for brunch they need to reduce their menu size and only offer à la carte. read more

I came to Surreal for a work event when I was at a conference. So to be fair I didn't really eat a meal I ordered but rather whatever the passed apps were for the event. All the apps were good but it wasn't filling so a few of us split the crispy oysters. They were interesting, I think in the fire I will stick with grilled or raw oysters on the half shell. The drinks were amazing! Their bartender knows what they are doing! I had three Eclipse in Blooms. And we had to try the Time Traveler's Tipple - just read the ingredients and tell me it doesn't sound interesting. The atmosphere is great but it was clear they didn't plan from a staff perspective to have enough bartenders to support the large even and almost full restaurant. Surreal is a beautifully decorated restaurant in the heart of Crystal City's restaurant row. Getting a reservation for an early dinner on a Friday evening was no issue. We got there a little before happy hour specials ended (at 6pm) but were a little sad those are only available at the bar. No biggie. As a starter, we got the Crispy Pillow tuna poke, which is served with a crunchy (fluffy) bubble that is great for scooping the poke, rice, and veggies it comes with. For my entree, I ordered the Causa Frita and it was delightful. This Peruvian dish was the right amount of comfort food (mashed potatoes), seafood mix (shrimp), and flavors that included red onions and some sort of spicy sauce that was a perfect balance to the rest. If Asian, seafood, and Peruvian are not your jam, fear not; there will be something on the menu for you, as there's pasta, pizza, and steak! read more

A fan of Seven Reasons in D.C., a friend and I met for dinner on a Wednesday in May around 7:30 p.m. We had a reservation, but we didn't need one as the space is large with many types of seating inside and out. Here's our experience. 1) Food: With a menu that feels a bit chaotic (a reference from the TV show The Bear), you'll find Japanese-inspired food, a burger, pasta, pizza, and more. To start, my friend and I split the Caesar salad. It comes out on a big plate with fried capers. It was tasty and with the right amount of dressing. For our mains, he had the salmon and I the scallops. The flavors were stronger on the scallops with the sweet corn cream, apples, and more. However, the scallops were overcooked. For dessert, he had the key lime pie and I the chocolate lava cake. Both took awhile to come out, but they were tasty. The lava cake comes with three different containers- one for the cake, one for the ice cream, and one for the dulce de leche. 2) Drinks: The drink menu is massive with many cocktails, wine, and beer. We both enjoyed the Sauvignon blanc wine and thought the Parallel Universe Passion just okay. Solid 3.5 stars rounding up: I'll begin by saying the ambiance is really nice. I like the concept of bringing nature indoors, however me being nit picky, I think the clouds look like bubbles. My party arrived at 6:45pm on a Friday evening. My partner and I showed up quite late around 7:30pm and everyone had already placed their orders. Around 7:45pm my partner and I got asked if we wanted to order. Ultimately, the food came out around 8:10pm. I would say that the wait times are unbelievably long. Thankfully I personally didn't wait that long for the entree but dessert again took painfully long. From ordering to receiving it was a solid 25 minutes. The food was pretty decent. The table shared an appetizer of poutine our way. The chicken tasted burnt but the rest was nicely seasoned. 3/5. I got a bucatini Alfredo which was creamy and delicious, hitting my Alfredo craving. However it didn't come with a meat. It started at $19 and to add chicken, an extra $12; to add shrimp, an extra $14; to add salmon, an extra $17. At that point to add meat, id rather buy all the ingredients to make it at home. My partner got a Saigon beef sandwich. I personally thought it was a pineapple forward dish which I didn't like, but he said he tasted all the spicy beef first. It came with the most AMAZING fries with spicy aioli. Is it funny to say that the fries were my favorite dish? I got to try an Alfredo pizza slice and a margherita blanc with pesto. They were good but I wouldn't go out of my way for these pizzas as you can get better pizza elsewhere. The crust was just not pizza crust to me and the sauce and top could use a little more flavor. Lastly, the desserts were top notch: lava cake and ice cream was melt in your mouth delicious, and the pineapple upside down cake was the best pineapple upside down cake I've ever had --the right ratio of cake and fruit with a small scoop of coconut ice cream. I wish they served the same amount of coconut ice cream for the pineapple upside down cake as they did vanilla bean ice cream from the lava cake. The vanilla bean ice cream was essentially a pint of ice cream! One more thing I want to point out was that when restaurants sing happy birthday to a customer or bring out a candle, that one dish with the candle is usually compensated. Neither dessert was compensated which was a bit disappointing. I didn't get cocktails as I'd rather try them during happy hour. Was very excited to try this place and overall I'm very pleased. I also love when a place that's aesthetically pleasing also has good food/drink. Went on a Thursday so getting a reservation for 6 wasn't hard. There was a decent amount of customers in but not overwhelming at all. Service was slow, maybe they're still working out the kinks since they're new but definitely room for improvement there. The drinks (specifically the Parallel Universe) were VERY good. The food menu seems a bit random with having sandwiches, pasta, pizza, seafood, etc but it was nice to have a bit of everything. The chips for the guac were kind of hard to eat as they felt stale. I enjoyed the Veal Parm way more than I thought it would, must've been the sauce. Visited here yesterday 2/6/24 for my baby sisters 19th Birthday. The menu is very different from most places I've been to so far. The restaurant for sure lives up to the name. I paired my entree with a glass of Catena (white) wine which was suggested by our waiter who was extremely nice, and attentive. I was with my family so it was a total of 6 of us. My dad wanted appetizers so he ordered some wings for all of us. I didn't try them but my family said they were good and the dipping sauce was yummy as well. In general the feedback I received from my family was that everyone was satisfied with their drinks and food. Now on to the decor. This place definitely sets a vibe as soon as you enter. We went at night so the lighting was very mellow which allowed the vibrant colors in the space to pop. It was very comfortable were we sat and the plants around us just really enhanced the mood. At the end of the night my sister and I went to the bathroom and I know it may sound crazy but we were really really impressed by the interior design in that section lol. The service, ambiance, cocktails and desserts at Surreal are the true star of the show. I can't remember the last time I had a lava cake or pisco as good as I had here. Unfortunately, that is where it ends. The food, being Latin and Asian fusion influenced is always doing a bit too much. The star Bahn mi is both too sweet and also too spicy. The swordfish crudo has just way too much pickled items with the caper berries and gherkins while loading on the cream and Doritos. The tuna poke, while fresh and instagrammable, is too sweet. The food feels like something I would get whilst eating at an upscale hotel restaurant. While that isn't bad, it isn't great either and that is the perspective I want to keep here. That being said, Surreal is absolute worth the trip for a few cocktails and desserts with friends, surprisingly good value, and suitable for lots of different palettes. I met a couple of friends here for dinner. I ate an hour early with my kids so I didn't get a chance to eat dinner there. I did have some oysters and their spicy house sauce was not bad. They do have valet parking for $8 which was nice. Cash only but they have an app that you can scan and pay with. The service was great! The waiter refilled our water when it was low and didn't hover. Plenty of seating area. The ambiance was surreal. It's got that magical feel and good to meet up for happy hours, catch up with friends, or date night. My friends enjoyed their dinner and I think surreal lives up to its name. I'll be going back soon. Check them out and hope you get the same vibes I felt there. ...surreal! read more

Amazing service, gorgeous space, easy to walk to, and great menu items! I think for the price, I'd like a little better execution on the menu as the menu items were quite promising. Pizza was decent; sauce could use a little tone down on maybe the red pepper or something else? The branzini was PERFFF but a smidge less oil as the fish does have some natural fats and oils to help in the cooking. That being said, the poke was fab and everything else was darn decent. I'd go back, especially for a work dinner or something casual but classy and fun. read more
