Tried Salt & Straw for the first time after a show at the Alex Theater. It gets a 4/5 for me. The store is located just outside the Americana and around a 2-3 block walk. The location is beautiful and the interior was well decorated. I liked the look of an old parlor and it fit the aesthetic of the Americana well. There was a slight wait at around 8 pm but it wasn't too long. The staff was patient and helped out the customers with recommendations and samples. I liked how the samples were on little metal spoons that added to the aesthetic. Salt & Straw has a lot of unique flavors and even seasonal specials. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of some of the flavors. The hazelnut cookies and cream was weird because it tasted more like coconut flavor than anything though the staff did warn me about. The salted malted chocolate chip cookie dough was also too fudgey/chocolately for me. It was also a little salty for my friend. I ended up with the classic mint chocolate chip and waffle cone but I wish there was something experimental that I liked. However, the ice cream I got, which was a single scoop, was quite large and reflected the price point of $7 (+$1.65 for the waffle cone). It was quite tasty and I would maybe try another flavor again. I do think the flavors are generally just too experimental for my tastes. read more

We also got a Tacolate which is their take on a choco taco. It's priced at $7.95 and you can find them individually boxed in their pint freezer. These frozen ice cream tacos are TINY.... Wtheck. And for that price? It's a collab with Taco Bell and even comes with co-branded "hot sauce' packets of wild berry cinnamon and mano jalapeno. Waaay too smale for the amount charged IMO. That's a one-time deal for us. Service was friendly but a little bit of a wait even though there wasnt a long line. Only one person scooping plus a cashier. Cashier had to help us with samples and scooping. No water offered like the OG Larchmont location back then. Been a while since we stepped into S&S. I guess that's no longer the way. We (as in my husband, our little girl dog, myself and Tora M) made our way to Salt & Straw after having a nice dinner for some dessert. We came on a Sunday evening, a little after 8 pm. After looking over the menu board, we ended up getting: Single Scoop ($6.95) + Split Cup ($0.50): Because I couldn't decide which flavor to get, I ended up taking Tora M's suggestion of getting a split cup and choosing Huckleberry Cornbread Pudding and Honey Lavender. Huckleberry Cornbread Pudding is part of their current berry series so I wanted to make sure I got a scoop of that, which I did like. I thought the ice cream was creamy and had a nice huckleberry flavor (which I really love). But it is on the sweet side. The honey lavender was very creamy and had a really nice balance of sweetness and can see why Tora M had told me that she always gets this flavor because it's just too good. Single Scoop ($6.95) + House Made Waffle Cone, ($1.65)- My husband also decided to get a scoop of the honey lavender but also wanted to have a waffle cone so that he could break off some of the pieces and share with our little girl (she also got a few licks of the ice cream too). ----------------------------- (Total= $16.05... Tora M was so kind to treat us) Service was friendly. I tried a few different flavors when it was our turn to order. The employee who helped us never rushed us and was more than happy to let us try more than one sample of ice cream flavors. After paying, we ended up sitting at the bench right in front of the register (and believe this is the only seating they have inside). Please note that Salt & Straw is dog friendly, in which they do allow dogs inside their store and they also sell dog friendly (non dairy) ice cream as well (you can find their Apple and Carrot w/ Sweet Potato Ribbon flavored pup cups in the freezer. This is my second favorite Salt & Straw (see another review, elsewhere on my Yelp site). It has two things going for it, right off the bat: location at Americana -- a vacation spot in the heart of Glendale and superb ice creams. The menu is limited but unusual. Where else could you find something like Baked Brie and Fig Cheesecake ice cream? Or Chocolate Potato Salad? I chose the Salted Caramel Okara Cupcake and it was utterly out of this world. The service is very basic. Offering anything chilled or frozen on a three-digit temperature day is a challenge and the place was packed, as these S&Ss always seem to be. The people behind the counter have to be fast and flexible and you sort of feel their pain when you are on line, if you can call it a line--customers of all types and ages just swarm in and range all over the place. Still, they generously offered almost unlimited sample spoons of any flavor we wanted to try and only the scale tipment kept me from indulging. I know my flavors, so my choice was just right. Others with us chose Chocolate Gooey Brownie and Arbequina Olive Oil (olives are fruit, after all ... !). The space is fairly clean given the challenges of keeping it that way on a frantic weekend, the wait was minimal due to the staff's efficiency and were it not for a lot of size 4 outfits, I would have come back for seconds and thirds. We heard about this place from a friend. When we walked in, we checked out the list of flavors to pick. My friend who was with us was thrilled to know that she could try any flavor before she decided on one to get. My friends and I tried a few that interested us. The employee was more than happy to give us those cute little spoons to try to our hearts content. Afterwards there was a little square on the panel to return the spoons. How cute! My friend and I ended up picking the strawberry coconut sherbet. While my cousin picked the sea salt caramel ribbon.
