As far as airport food goes, this was actually pretty good. The salads are a generous size -- no skimping on proteins or toppings. I really enjoyed the Cobb salad. Mine was a customized with deleted bacon and added garbanzo beans. Overall, if you are stuck in O'Hare and hungry, this is one of the healthier and better options available. Had a decent salad here last night during a delayed layover. Got the mixed greens (good, crisp, fresh) with carrots and broccoli. Those were both fresh as well. The cheese was pretty tasteless and the chicken was chewy. Balsamic Vinaigrette was the highlight and was delicious. Price was decent considering it's in the terminal. Staff was quick to serve. They also have some suggested salads that have a similar amount of toppings and were nice combinations. I went with a very basic spring mix, carrots, broccoli, cucumber slices, eggs, and croutons with ranch, which was probably the freshest meal option available at the airport. The chicken was... wet? and slimy? and flavorless. the dressing was a glob in the middle of the wrap that came out of a huge gross bottle and the included avocado was one singular slice that was browning. The food court in ORD's Terminal 1 Concourse C is laden with sandwiches, pizza, and fried food. Hey, I usually ain't complaining about that, but I needed a "healthy" lunch during my layover to rich BBQ meat-filled Kansas City. Saladworks it was! Service was really quick and kept the long line moving. However, the employee making my salad kept asking questions that were barely audible and would repeat herself in the same near-whisper. I got the Fire Roasted Cabo salad which came with chicken, tomatoes, roasted peppers, corn, beans, and tortilla strips. The salad is Mexican themed but just comes with Italian dressing from a bottle. The chicken was not good; it seemed just like wet, previously frozen chunks. The tuna in the Niçoise salad just looked like canned chunk dark meat. The tomatoes were very pale and bland. But I was content that the lettuce was crisp and not wilted at all. TL;DR: Not a great salad, skip the meat, but it's a healthy option in this food court. read more

I've been in and out of Chicago for years and I remember coming across this place in Terminal 1 after checking out the rainbow tunnel (You have to get to Concourse C). The first time, I got The Tivoli salad because I liked that it came with some pasta on it. Eating it, I remember thinking what a great salad it was and I've been craving it ever sense. It was fresh, filling, and flavorful. It was well proportioned with toppings to salad base and I left very satisfied. I fly in and out of Terminal 3 before/after they're open, so I haven't had the chance to go back. Well, I recently did and I did a make your own with a pasta/salad base, bacon, roasted peppers, olives, mushrooms, and sun dried tomatoes with a vinaigrette dressing. Just as good as I remembered it...actually, better because I made it the way I wanted it. It came out to about $10 (seems expensive for a salad, but it's an airport, and actually less than a lot of other place's salads). If you do a make your own, it's 1 meat and 4 veggies. The man behind the register told every customer before me which utensils were on the counter and where to find napkins, so from reading past reviews, I feel like they're listening and trying to make improvements. I went with the iceberg lettuce, pasta, cucumber, carrots, mushroom, and sun dried tomatos with a balsamic vinaigrette on the side. I was traveling through ORD for work and needed something to eat. I wanted something a little healthier than a burger, so I found Saladworks in the food court area. There was a bit of a line, but it moved quickly and I ordered the Turkey Club salad, which has chopped romaine & iceberg blend, radiatorre pasta, turkey, bacon, and tomatoes. Their suggested dressing for the salad is buttermilk ranch, but you can choose any of their dressings (and they have a ton to choose from). The dressing came packaged with the salad in its own container, which was nice to be able to control the amount (I still used it all, because it was delicious). The ingredients all seemed really fresh; I didn't have any wilted lettuce or mushy tomatoes or anything like that. I really liked the addition of the pasta to the salad! It bulks it up quite a bit and makes it even more filling. I thought the price was very reasonable since a) it's airport food, which is always more expensive, and b) the portion size was huge! I could have shared it but since I was traveling alone, I just decided to make this my main meal of the day. Service was quick and pleasant, I didn't have any issues with that. The guy in front of me went a little crazy building his own salad and then was shocked at the price at the end. I would be aware of lots of extras when building your own--I think it's probably safer to go with the signature salads if you don't want to be adding everything up in your head as you go! If you're not a huge salad fan, they also have sandwiches, paninis, and soup. You can also get any of the salads as a wrap, which I appreciate since I don't always want a sandwich on a lot of bread. While you can get salads from many places in terminal 1, SW (Concourse C, C19) is the only dedicated salad spot. The salads are made to order - you can get their specialty salads (standard types like Club, Garden, Greek, Nicoise, BLT, Caesar are offered) or create your own (there aren't many toppings to choose from). You can add on extras (including proteins) to the specialty salads. Dressings come on the side. The dressings are also standard/classic. * Spinach salad ($7.49): It seemed fresh enough but plain and boring. The salad had dry whole leaves of spinach, chopped hard boiled eggs, salty bacon, and crunchy, salty croutons. It's not as large as I expected/hoped for. They also sell sandwiches and wraps. Outside of the airport, I'd give it two stars (mundane, few options, expensive) but the fact that the salads are made to order is kinda nice when you're trapped in an airport. It comes in a sturdy container which can easily be taken on the plane. Since it's in the food court, there's plenty of seating too. read more

I've been dreaming about Salad Works since I discovered it in the airport last night. On my way back from a business trip to Chicago, II originally wanted Macaroni Grill. I got really exited when I saw it in Terminal 3 at O'Hare and was looking forward to it before my flight home. Unfortunately, I was flying out of Terminal 1, (no Macaroni Grill there -- sad face) so I slowly started to justify that it's the worst place to eat. Considering the Fat and Calorie counts. All food in airports is ridiculously overpriced so I figured if I was going to spend moolah, It should be good. Terminal one has a few restaurants. I was craving noodles but didn't want sauce laden pasta. Scanning the food kosics,I spotted a large bucket of noodles at Salad Works and chose them. In a pretty white square plastic bowl, I got salad, turkey, noodles, carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers with lite ranch and a Snapple for about 9 bucks. Their staff was fast, cheerful and friendly. The salad was, light, filling and delicious. I want to go back to O'Hare terminal one just to have it again. Salad Works HAS to come to New York City. It would do so well here. It's simple, clean, fresh and under 500 cals. They don't bombard you with fatty topping options so making a tasty healthy choice is easy. Saladworks... works. Airport food can be tricky for a whole host of reasons, especially when you have dietary restrictions or a timing issue. Living on a plant-based diet and only having an hour between flights, my options in Chicago O'Hare were pretty darn limited. Knowing this, I vetted out my food choices before landing and settled on Saladworks because of the seemingly plentiful choices. Unfortunately, the online menu options did not translate to the airport version of this eatery. Which is okay (because it has to be when you're in a rush), but I definitely got my hopes up for no reason. What I wanted to order: baby spring mix, bleu cheese, focaccia croutons, walnuts, avocado, red onion, grape tomatoes, and olives all topped with chunky bleu cheese dressing. What I ended up ordering: iceberg lettuce, walnuts, egg, bleu cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes all topped with a watery, opaque dressing resembling a bleu cheese-ranch combination. Saladworks is located right at the mouth of the "food court." There were two women working behind the counter, and after taking care of a woman and her three daughters it was my turn. "Can I build my own salad?" The woman said yes and let me know that I was allowed four veg and one meat; five veg if I wanted to skip the meat. In the end, because of the lack of choices I only ended up with four veggies. The woman visibly looked sad for me and ended up heaping bigger portions of what I did order onto the salad. That was very nice, Ms. Saladworks Lady. I appreciated that! The salad was substantial - I didn't feel deliriously and delightfully full, nor did I crave more food after. For me, it was ideal "airport" food because it was relatively healthy and relatively flavorful (do NOT order the bleu cheese dressing, though). There was nothing about the salad that will make me long for it, but it got the job (of getting nutrients in my body) done. And sometimes that's good enough for me! MSG! I asked if I could have just oil dressing, then confirmed it was just Balsamic as I have an allergy to MSG (mono sodium glutamate). Then after sitting down it was some sort of Italian balsamic. I went to there website which is helpful as it lists ingredients and found the dressing they gave me has MSG. Sadly one of the worst experiences I have had from an airport dining experience. Frustrated does not describe the level of irritation when you are rushing to your gate trying to grab anything to avoid the options on the plane. Little did I know the in incompetence wasn't complete at the quality in general of the salad but also the general lack of insight to pack a fork in the to go bag. At least warn a person if you are trying to save from having to stick your own utensils. Having a salad on a plane without a fork is just a bit as useful as having nothing to eat on the plane. In the Food Court near gate C19 in Terminal 1. With it being mainly salads it's probably healthier than the other fast food places and McDonald's in the terminal. You can choose a salad off of the menu or create your own. There are about 10 different salad dressings to choose from. Sturdy container to take on the plane with you and all of the dressings come in a container on the side. Usually has a line but it moves fast unless you get some nitwit who stands there and hems and haws over what to add to their salad. read more

Let's face it, it can be really hard to find something even approaching healthy (let alone appetizing) in the post-9/11 TSA-stifled market haze of an airport gate in the US. Don't get me wrong, this will not be the most amazing gourmet salad you've ever eaten. But it is a salad. It is healthy and refreshing. It is also quick and customizable. Basically, you stand in line like at a Subway/Quiznos restaurant and choose your options, selecting from a wide range of fresh-looking offerings. If you're in a rush, there's also a board chock-full of pre-menu'd items like a Chicken Caesar, Greek or Southwestern. But you can customize your salad any way you want. Best salad I've ever had? Certainly not. But Saladworks deserves 5-stars for providing much-needed diversity in a market typically dominated by pink slime patties, transfat-pastries and mystery-meat wonderbread sandwiches. I dug this place overall. I did feel raped by the price though and the ingredient selection was pretty crappy. No feta or goat cheese, (just big chunks of average American & Jack), no nuts or good veg and no oil/vinegar option which annoyed me... I got a "create your own," and can I say, underwhelming? You get a choice of 5 "toppings." But they don't have any fresh veggies besides carrots and cucumbers. No meat besides turkey vs ham.
