My friend and I visited Sakura for sushi so this review pertains to that specifically. We visited around 6:30 on a Saturday evening and the hibachi section was packed. To start off we ordered two miso soups (typically at other sushi restaurants a miso soup and salad is complimentary when you order over a certain amount of money on sushi). Since we were both hungry my friend wanted to get rolls because they are more filling. We got the following rolls: California, yellowtail, salmon, bamboo, and the rainbow. Without any high expectations I also ordered one order of the scallop nigiri. The sushi came out quickly- the quality of the fish was a hit or miss, standard of a sushi restaurant of this caliber. A couple of flaws I noticed was the rice was too wet, they pack too much rice into each of the rolls, and they are very heavy handed with the imitation crab meat. As I referred to the quality of the fish was hit or miss. I will focus on my experience with the yellowtail.I had a piece where it was edible and other pieces where it was very chewy and almost tasted like rubber. After the experience with the yellowtail I was afraid to try out the scallop nigiri. When it came time to try out the scallop, I cautiously took a bite and noticed it was void of any scallop flavor. It tasted like a piece of slimy rubber. The excessive use of imitation crab meat drowns out the flavor of the fish, which was missing anyways. This meal came up to $65 which is not too expensive for a sushi dinner but for the quality of fish you get I felt jibbed. If you enjoy imitation crab meat then this place might be right for you. Overall, if you want to enjoy decent sushi then look elsewhere. Perhaps they are better with the hibachi but I left feeling dissatisfied. I guess the lack of patrons in the sushi section should have been a sign to me to avoid their sushi. read more

Tempanyaki is fun when you're with a group and you have more people who can help be enthralled with the chef who is throwing shrimp in the air and making onion volcanos. I thought it was super neat the first couple of times :-) I'm not real big on sitting next to strangers either so I was happy that we didn't hit the busy lunch hour and ended up with a table all to ourselves. The waitress kind of forgot about us though and we had to flag her down several times. The chicken tempanyaki plate was delicious and my friend liked the lobster/steak combo. We caught up with our lives and tried to eat it all along with the extra spicy tuna and california rolls we ordered. Neither were great and we were so full from lunch. I would definitely pass on the sushi next time. read more

Even in nice, diverse Fairfax, racial and gender insensitivity still exists. Labor Day, I expected to have a great experience at the Sakura restaurant in Fair Lakes. It was not what I was expecting. First, our party of 6 had to move seats due to an overhead roof leak from "air unit condensation" that dripped down on our seats. Second, our young (white) waitress was indifferent to us at best and didn't seem too thrilled to serve us. We were seated with a pleasant white couple with a young child. The couple also had to change seats, but the water didn't drip on them. However, the (Asian) restaurant manager felt compelled to apologize to the white gentleman in front of me and didn't acknowledge our inconvenience at all. Lastly, the (Asian) table cook was much more friendly, but he couldn't seem to refrain from using black urban slang and making multiple jokes with sexual innuendo aimed at the women at the table. The couple blushed in embarrassment as he told jokes inappropriate for a 2nd grader's ears and one directed at my daughter, while slinging shrimp at her, was one too many. I politely asked him to tamp down on the jokes considering the presence of the 2nd grader. I shouldn't have to tell a middle-aged man how he should speak to female patrons ranging in age from 10-70. He had comedic skills but they belong on cable TV, not at a family restaurant. I chose not to name him or any other workers because I observed other workers doing their jobs well. I realize the restaurant business is not easy and everyone doesn't hide their feelings well when they'd rather be someplace else (I imagine the waitress would rather have been at the beach). I still gave them an 18% gratuity and would hope that my experience was an exception to the norm. However, no patrons of any race, gender, background, etc., should have to think twice about being welcomed with hospitality and good service in a reputable restaurant. When i'm craving hibachi Sakura is the place i go!! Fairlakes or Tysons. Yes it's not cheap but mannnn do they give you tasty food with a show! We had ivan last night and he definitely knew how to make our food taste wonderful! they start you off with miso soup and a salad, both to my liking. I ordered the ribeye with shrimp and chicken livers app! i dont eat chicken livers anywhere else!! Gotta love their yum yum sauce and their ginger sauce!! Steak was cooked to what i asked, shrimp was great, and the chicken livers were MONEY!!!!! We also had scallops maybe a little too much salt but it was cooked to perfection. So if you're craving some hibachi and dont mind the cost head over to Sakura! but better to make reservations or call ahead to see what the wait is. read more

3 stars because I have to try the hibachi side. The restaurant was clean. Staff on the sushi side of the restaurant was nice, you will not expect them to hover over you to place an order. Service was pleasant, wait time was about 15 mins. My sushi (see pictures) was made-to-order. I loved every bite, they also have real crab meat on certain sushi items. They are consistent because I went to the one in Ocean City and I had no complaints. Be warned because their is no wall divider for the hibachi side you can be surprised by a loud yell or clapping. Its not a critique more of to be expected, it can be a lively place if you are sitting at the sushi bar. read more

Went with a friend and her kiddo for dinner, we sat a hibachi table with another small group. I ordered sushi but my guests ordered hibachi. Seems that the routine is and always has been the same old song and dance regarding the rollout of the hibachi meals. Bang clang, tap dance on the grill with spatulas,Choo choo train of steaming onion stack, set on fire, tossing shrimps into the mouths of hungry patrons , as fun as it is for children it lacked the luster I desired. I typically like to sit at the sushi bar and watch creations unfold. The sushi was delicious and I ate every bite. Service was attentive, my water was never empty. I'd go back again! read more

This is our go to Japanese steakhouse. We have been here many times over the years. I love the sushi section. My friends and I have had some wonderful outings enjoying their fresh, flavorful nigiri and various rolls. Whenever I go, I always get the Dynamite roll; a california roll topped with spicy scallops and cream cheese. Divine! It is one of my favorites. The Hibachi area is usually a fun time; dinner and a "show". The chefs are usually pretty engaging. Sometimes, it is a tad lackluster, but generally the chefs remain engaged with the customers throughout the meal. My husband and I usually order the filet and scallops. I almost always enjoy it. It is usually well seasoned and cooked properly. I have had the lobster and shrimp. They tend to be slightly overcooked, so I stick with what I know they do well. My kids get the chicken. They have always enjoyed it and are eager to come back for more. The service is always friendly and generally attentive. We never wait for refills on our drinks. Even if you are in the hibachi section, order some sushi, you won't regret it. read more

Ordered the Teppanyaki Filet mignon. The steak was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly medium. So incredibly tender. Generous portion of steak, veggies, fried rice and noodles. Came at a Friday night with my family. We had a reservation for 730 PM, but it was not needed there were still a fair number of tables still open. The staff are very friendly. Overall, the service was pretty good and the portions were huge! Each dish comes with a choice of appetizer (chicken livers/sauteed mushrooms/shrimp flambe) and the conventional Japanese sides of miso soup/salad/bean sprouts/mixed vegetables. This is a fun place for "non-Asians". Families love to bring their kids and enjoy the onion volcano and catching of shrimp tails. Overall, the food is pretty good but nothing special. They add a lot of oil to the fried rice, vegtables and meat. If you want your steak medium well, ask for medium. The meat is always overdone. One plus: you get a lot of food for your money. You can get shrimp, a good sized lobster tail, and filet mignon for 30 bucks-plus your rice, veggies, soup, salad and appetizer. Usually, I sit on the sushi side. Their sushi isn' t the best, but its decent. The seaweed salad with cucumbers is pretty tasty. I would recommend the shrimp tempura roll and spicy tuna roll. read more

Service here is horrible. Came Sunday around noon. Only had a few customers on the sushi only side of the restaurant. Took 25 minutes for one refill of water. I'm not sure how the service on the hibachi side is, but the sushi side is horrible. Our waiter half the time was on his phone and taking smoke breaks. The sushi is not fresh and not good at all. My girlfriend and I got a sushi platter with sashimi/nigri/rolls. The only good thing was probably the shrimp tempura roll, miso soup and salad. They gave us some squid wrapped with cucumbers and some leaf. Which was disgusting. We both didn't know what it was. I recommend people not come and spend their money on this location. You can spend the same amount at a highly rated sushi restaurant that serves you fresh fish and excellent service. Even if you looking for a quick local sushi fix. I would not recommend you dining here. Better off spending your money somewhere else if your going to spend that much money. read more

This is hard to write but my friend and I walked in and felt uncomfortable from the start. We were treated different from the other customers from where we were seated to how our server would speak to us. We ordered a good amount of food and drinks but every time we ordered they were surprised and kept mentioning the price which gave us a red flag of doubt that we can not afford to eat on this establishment? All our orders took longer than the rest. At this point we finished and asked for the check for some reason the manager took our payment real quick and processed the payment. I've eaten at the Sakura in Tyson's before however this is my first time at the Fairfax location. We arrived before our group so we had sushi and a glass of wine at the bar which was very good. When we were seated at our grill/table the chef was nice and did the fun typical tricks. Called in for veg sushi, checked that it was prepared separately from meats, double checked at pickup(where host greeted me w his mask around his chin rather than mouth) and was assured there was no chance for cross contamination. Then got home and found a string of crab through my Mexican veggie roll. Super unfortunate. Be insanely careful if you have a shellfish allergy or are pregnant. After about 30 min and people who came in after us were being seated before us, we walked up to the front desk (which we were standing about 15ft away from). We asked when we were supposed to be called and the guy blatantly lied and said he called us several times. We said he hadn't and that we had been standing very close so we would have heard if he had. We heard every single name he called. He proceeded to lie and wouldn't look us in the eye and said we would be seated at the next table. When we asked how much longer it would be, he wouldn't answer us. We ended up just leaving and getting chipotle. Much better service there. The next week we went to the Sakura in Tysons and had a great experience, so obviously it was just this location (and maybe just the one very rude man) that we dealt with. read more

I was here few weeks ago... I haven't had hibachi in a while, so decided to go to Sakura in Fair Lakes shopping center. Between the 2 of us, we got the filet mignon and shrimp & scallop entrees. And with the arctic wind, we thought an order of hot sake was suitable. And it was! The chef's performance was pretty good, he only dropped the knife once in the beginning. I do have to say, he used way too much oil for... EVERYTHING. It was to the point where I took a bite of my fried rice and my lips were like... I put on lip gloss. I asked to have the meat cooked to medium, but I got well done. Ok, no biggie. But there was too much salt on the filet. We drank so much liquid, we couldnt finish anything. I think I will stick with Tyson's Sakura from now on. Maybe other chefs will be better, I don't know. read more

This is my kids favorite spot for birthdays and special occasions. It's on the pricy side and a longer sit down dinner. The food is always good and we always get the same thing - steak & shrimp served with rice (choice of white or fried), & sautéed veggies. It comes with a small onion broth soup and salad. You have a choice of sautéed mushrooms, chicken livers (never seen anyone order this) or shrimp flambé for an appetizer. Portions are large and we usually leave with doggy bags much enjoyed for lunch the next day. Most everyone in my family requests double yum yum sauce- it's like crack. It tastes good on everything! The cooks are always entertaining & preform their obligated big fire, volcano with fireworks which turns into a train, little guy peeing on the fire, "egg roll" egg toss tricks, tossing food for guests to catch in their mouth, etc. it gets a little monotonous after going there for so many years & can see that in some of the cooks too. My main complaint is they do not devein the shrimp well, if at all and it grosses me out. It used to be hard to get drink refills but seems they're getting better about that. I would suggest always making a reservation before your visit. They're always busy, even on nights you wouldn't think. They stay true to reservations for the most part, even when busy. Food was decent even though the fried rice was loaded with that mayo sauce. But that manager will never make me want to go back. We ordered extra food just so we could take it to go. We left the food by accident but drove back within 10 mins. The manager in glasses said they threw it out and just ignored us. He didn't apologize or offer us any compensation. When we complained that we PAID for extra food just so we could take it for carry out, his response was unapologetic and he said normally people don't come back for the food... It was like talking to a wall. It's just so frustrating when they have no remorse and treat their customers with no respect. This was after waiting close to an hour after sitting down since there was no chef to service us. It now made sense when we initially walked in and the manager was engaged in a heated argument with another patron. That guy is bad news and we will NOT be dining here in the future. Otani has just as good food for cheaper prices and will treat you with the respect we all deserve. read more

I was recently there for a birthday dinner with a group of friends. Towards the end of the meal my girl friend was hit in the head with a tray from a waiters. Very disappointed on the way the staff and manager handled the situation. All the manager had to say is that if u go to the hospital he would pay for the medical bill. 3.5 Stars. Sakura's have been around forever. You're paying for the show, and the high prices for seafood. They could be frying liver for all I care, as long as they put the Yum-Yum sauce over it! We recently had Illysa S's birthday dinner here. We had a reservation for ten people, we arrived over a span of 10 minutes but were not able to be seated until the whole party was there. That annoys me. We had a reserved hibachi, just let us sit down, but I digress. Miso soup, salad with ginger dressing, a small appetizer of either shrimp, mushrooms or chicken livers, fried or white rice, veggies, bean sprouts and your choice of protein, all served with ginger and yum-yum sauces. I normally get the shrimp appetizer, and the filet and scallops for my entrée. The steak is always melt in your mouth tender (I get mine cooked med. rare), and the scallops are cooker perfectly and never rubbery. My only complaint is the inconsistency of the scallop preparation. I was here a week before and ordered the same thing and received four huge whole, juicy scallops. This current time... the few people who ordered scallops received cut up chunks instead of being served whole. I enjoy the whole scallop being put in front of me... not pieces of it. There were two people in our party with shellfish allergies. One ordered filet the other salmon. Sakura was very accommodating to cook their items before putting any type of shellfish on the cook top, it worked out well. If you run into this issue, let them know, they will work around to but please note, the person with the allergy will get their entrée before you get your seafood appetizer. Tell them to go ahead and eat before it gets cold. The chefs are playful and entertaining creating volcano's out of onions, smiley faces out of vodka and a lighter, flinging shrimp and tossing eggs around. The prices have been raised significantly over the years. Average entrée is running around $28.00-$32.00 so in large groups it can get a bit expensive. I'm a fan... but I mainly just come here for the yum-yum sauce. read more

This is the perfect place to go if you are a sushi lover but your date (aka me!) will not touch it with a ten foot pole! You can get your sushi and there is still something there for me to eat :) I think i really enjoy the fact that your dinner is made into a show. I ordered the scallops and steak with steamed rice. I was getting a kick out of him making the fried rice though and made me wish i ordered it. I was pretty excited about the fact that they give you a HUGE serving of vegetables and since my date didn't want his, they were nice enough to give them to me. I thought that was great since i love vegetables! The prime rib definitely overshadowed the scallops as there really wasn't much flavor to them. I enjoyed my drink (the dancing girl) but was not sure i would have paid 8.75 for another! Things here can really add up fast! Overall a good experience... a little pricey but worth it for the fun! read more

I want to start by saying that the service in this restaurant sucks very much . We order steak and chicken and specifically ask not to put mushrooms and they added it again. They then remade it which took 30 mins . They brought the steak and chicken with shrimp on it which my girlfriend is allergic too. Also my niece order a kids meal and they brought out a adult plate. In which once they knew it was for a kid they said they would remake the order which took another 40 mins for shrimp and rice . She had to eat out of her fathers plate. Thanks Yelpers for pointing me to this place. We had dinner here last night, we were pleased with the sushi and the filet mignon. Service overall was pretty good, they do have a kids menu if you're wondering if you can take your kids here without it costing a fortune. They give you a choice of steamed or fried rice with your meal, I would pass on the fried rice it was so greasy. When the chef made it I was shocked to see him drench the rice in their special sauce. Quite unappetizing, it conjured this image in my head of the Nickelodean channel where they pour a bucket of slime on someone. read more

Great for a fun date or with a group of friends. If you do hibachi and you're just a couple people, you'll end up sitting with strangers- not a bad thing, unless the people with you are rude/rowdy/[insert undesirable behavior here]. My date and I ordered everything- chicken, steak, shrimp... There's TONS of food- plenty of fried rice, vegetables, etc. The chef I had was awesome- he put on a great show and made everyone laugh- imitating a volcano with an opinion cut into rings, smoke coming from a train, etc. He served and entertained a full table. We even got to try and catch food he flipped from his spatula into our mouths (i caught one!). Hibachi- good food and a great experience. I've also done sushi here. I was surprised at how good it was. Fresh, and a pretty good deal for the money you spend on it. Sitting at the bar for a late lunch was an enjoyable experience as well- the bartenders tend to be friendly and will chat with you and recommend things. I'd recommend stopping here for lunch or taking a date/friends here for dinner. read more

Hey, getting sushi from here is one step away from driving my toyota camry, wearing my skinny black tie on a kohl's suit, and listening to amy grant on the way to lunch, amirite? Ok, none of those things are really all THAT bad. Amy Grant was delightful back in the day, and Toyotas are fantastic on the wallet in both maintenance costs and gas mileage. Holy crap, i'm turning into my father. Wait, where was I? Oh, Sakura. Sakura is the equivalent of turning into your parents, in regards to a sushi joint. It's a chain; i've never lived beyond "hollerin" distance from one, and to be frank, i've never eaten at one. I've always found a delightful hole-in-the-wall with a sushi chef I can get to know on a first name basis that serves it up, no-frills and expertly prepared. (One guy used to call me "Captain" because I was in the military, despite the fact that I wasn't an officer. I think he knew that and was being cheeeeeeky") The bad news is that there ISN'T a hole in the wall spot near my work. I can hoof it out to Centreville, VA (and visit Tomo Sushi, which is really the gem of the area) but Sakura is right across the street, and you know what? It's Damn Fine(tm). You will not be disappointed by ANYTHING here, as the service is friendly and prompt and the sushi is fresh and expertly prepared. The menu is extensive, and they offer hibachi seating for those that want some dinner theater. I've been here 2-3 times and I've never left feeling anything but pleased. Get you some Sakura. Sakura has the some of the best sushi I've had in Fairfax so far. The quality is really excellent. It's not very cheap, but with sushi, you definitely get what you pay for. The teppan-yaki is also really good here. The selection of items for the grill is larger than usual. You can get filet mignon for only a couple of dollars more than the regular steak; nice! read more

There are two components to Sakura - Tepanyaki and Sushi. Tepanyaki is certainly their hottest attraction so you need to make reservations ahead of time. The caveat: they don't take them over the phone. Arrive about an hour before you want to eat, put your name on the list, then go shopping and come back :). If you don't do this, you will be expected to wait at least 45 minutes before a table becomes available. The Tepanyaki is about the same as you get anywhere else - sometimes the chefs act a bit too much for my liking (I was starving hungry the first time I came here and the chef insisted on leaving me with only a teaspoon of rice for the longest time :(.). I was impressed with aspects of the sushi. The portions are huge and their special rolls (not listed on the paper sheet) are pretty yummy. The service in the sushi area was really speedy when I last ate on that side, especially considering there was just one waitress and it was new years eve. I was also impressed with the size of each piece of sushi. The one major downside though, was the aftermath in my bathroom... I'm not sure what was wrong with their sushi or if it was just one particular one that I reacted to, but later on it wasn't so pretty :(. So why do I go back? I'd say that this is the best value for money sushi in the c'ville area. And if you're not in the mood for sushi, there are still other options :). read more

Good quality sushi from a chain? Seriously, yes! I've been here a few times now and have never tried the steak house side. (Although the last time was on a Saturday and it was packed!) The sushi patrons are seated in the smaller dining room to the left. If you're daring skip the seaweed salad and try the calamari salad appetizer to start. The squid is thinly sliced and not the kind you get with rings or tentacles. Very fresh with finely sliced chili peppers for a nice bite but not too hot. For dinner I ordered the Dynamite rolls which were basically California rolls but the topping was minced broiled scallop with roe and a dab of cream cheese. I'm not usually a huge fan of California rolls since they're so common and rather bland but the scallop made all the difference here. They were nice and flavorful with a nice creamy texture at the end of the bite. I also tried the shrimp tempura rolls which are excellent here. Be sure to also check out the regular menu for more interesting choices. They aren't on the paper menu that you check from to make your selections. There I found a tuna, cilantro, jalapeno roll that was one of the best I've had. The tuna was top grade and you got a very generous portion of fish per roll. Next time I'll try the Sake sampler that one of the other reviewers suggested! Overall a very good value for sushi in the Burbs. read more
