I have always ordered Peking Duck from Old Peking Restaurant in Oakton. Expensive but good. Just ordered 1/2 Duck. Price increase! Got the Duck and drove home. Opened the package and noted that this must have been a duck on a diet. No more than 1/4 duck. In fact so little I drove back to the restaurant and showed them the (lack of) order. No acknowledgement, just staring at me. So I explained that I knew the quantity of a half duck and this didn't make it. Asked for a refund. Just stared at me but did give me the refund. No comment. No apologies. Just arrogance. I looked at the register person and said "I won't be back." Again, the arrogant stare. And I won't be back. Left, drove a block and went to Tasty Hunan. Polite, price was right and got my order right away. I will be back. PS, a bit ago I ordered from Old Peking online menu but was charged a higher price. I showed them the web site. Was told they hadn't updated the web site. I said, it makes no difference as that is the price I was going to pay. Nope, not if you want the order. I paid the higher price. Looking at the history of this family-owned restaurant, you can tell that it is a Chinese American classic. The menu and the food are reflective of that. I think my primary concern pertains to the fact that, with a reservation, for a standard Saturday 7:30 pm dinner, we had a pretty substantive wait (close to 35 min) to order after we were handed the menus. It may point to a busy kitchen, but just be prepared, or may be look for earlier slots when it would be less busy. The food, we opted for the $58 dinner for two, which comes with two soups, one appetizer, three entrees (in a smaller platter), and two scoops of ice cream. Good value, and average taste. What a horrible experience was in area decided to try this place bad decision. Got simple order sweet sour shrimp it was horrendous. Disgusting the shrimp tasted rotten so stopped had just like 6 pieces three of which were shrimp less just balls of bad tasting batter and the sweet sauce was gross. I have never had such bad Chinese. Dam i would settle for good tasting dog or cat. This is the worst carry out I ever experienced maybe it has new owners. This cozy restaurant with the subdued lighting and friendly staff is known for their Crispy Beef (Szechuan style) - a lot of people really like it but quite a few mention that it excessively fried. I tried it because that has been one of my favorites at other restaurants but unfortunately I, too, found it to be like fried beef jerky and rather hard to chew. With so many people mentioning the issue, I wonder why they continue to serve it like that. The good news is that if you like orange beef, you will like theirs. I often treat an older friend of mine to dinner and he was so enamored of the orange beef that we wanted to fight over the last piece. Normally I would dock them a star or two because of the Crispy Beef problem but then I gave them back two stars because of the orange beef. They are offering 10 percent off food eaten at the restaurant for Restaurant Week 2026 so I might return to try out their dinner for two for $60, includes an appetizer, soup, sherbet, and three entries (reduced size) (one of which can be orange beef!). This restaurant has been on my radar for quite a while. Yet we only recently made our way there. They have been opened for almost 33 years which speaks to their popularity---and we now know why having been there twice at this point. We found the staff to be friendly, polite and efficient. The dining area is small yet you don't feel cramped. As for the menu, we liked that there were some old school entrees that aren't often seen in Chinese restaurants these day. For example, they have moo shi (chicken, beef and pork) and moo goo gai pan. They also have a few Thai entrees (Pad Thai and drunken noodles, for example). Each time we've been there it has been on a Sunday around 5 p.m. At that time of day, few people are dining in. However, they seem to do a robust take out business. This is what we've tried so far: Soups---hot and sour soup, wonton soup and egg drop soup. We both agree that the hot and sour soup is just okay as it seems to skimp on both the hot and the sour. My husband had wonton soup and said the broth was mild and the wontons were generously filled with pork. I tried the egg drop soup. Some Yelpers feel it's the best they've ever had. Since I hadn't had egg drop soup in years, thus I can't really make that claim. However, it did have a nice, mild flavor as well as a silky texture. Entrees --- chicken with garlic sauce, moo shi beef, ma po tofu and Hunan beef. My husband was really impressed with the chicken with garlic sauce saying the garlic flavor came through very clearly. I only sampled some of his and agree about the garlic flavor. I had the moo shi beef and was quite impressed. The beef was of good quality---very tender. The plum sauce, however, was flavorful but very thin. I would have preferred a thicker consistency. This dish comes with 4 pancakes. Just beware that the portion is huge! I ended up taking half of it home. The leftovers held up very well---even the pancakes. My husband agreed with my take on this dish. None went to waste. The second trip, for entrees, we had Hunan Beef and ma po tofu. Again, the beef was excellent! We enjoyed the flavorings but we wished that there was a better variety of veggies in it, rather than just broccoli, button mushrooms and carrots. Seeing the button mushrooms was a disappointment as this dish tends to have straw mushrooms. The ma po tofu, which is a vegetarian version, was quite good. It had just enough spice in it and the tofu cubes were cut on the large size. Again, button mushrooms showed up. This dish (which I sometimes make at home) tends to have shiitake mushrooms in it. We plan to return again and try more dishes. Just note that not all chicken dishes have white meat in them. Some do---and they charge more for all white meat. Others only have dark meat, and some are a mix of the two. So, if you like chicken and want white meat, be sure to ask when you place your order. read more

This restaurant is located in the mall area of Oakton, so parking is available everywhere. It is a nice, clean, cozy with good ambiance. We had a very good lunch with a few friends. The foods and services are quite good. The Peking duck is very crispy and delicious. We also had the beef noodle, combination seafoods and string beans. They're well prepared and tasty. The service here is always very good, as Monica recognizes her regular customers and what they usually order, including any special requests. Our most recent visit was a little disappointing, however, because both the wonton soup and the shrimp with lobster sauce were extremely salty (and I like salt). The sweet and sour pork did not disappoint, as usual though! I'm wondering too, if they might be under new management, as the gentleman who was seated behind the desk at the front of the restaurant was not familiar and was not nearly as friendly as the person who usually greets us. read more

And while your egg rolls may not be perfect...yours are the best I have had. You spoil me unabashedly. You always give extra dessert..at least 4-5 fortune cookies in the end. We had the Kung Pao chicken, Beef lo mein, wonton soup, and steamed pork dumplings. The kung pao chicken was good, with decent flavor and a good kick. The beef lo mein was rather flavorless, average, and disappointing. The wonton soup was terrible and stale, and tasted like dirty dish water! The steamed pork dumplings were just okay. Overall, this restaurant was definitely hit or miss, and for the price, there are definitely better Chinese food restaurants nearby. read more

The food was mediocre and the service slow as molasses. They were doing a swift takeout business on Sunday night but had trouble taking care of us. ** 4 Stars ** I was driving up Route 123 wondering what I should eat for lunch - and out of the corner of my eye I spied Old Peking. And I remembered the place was favorably reviewed by someone on my Yelp Friends list - turns out it was Heather M! Anyway, I went in just before 2:00 pm - so I guess I missed the lunch crowd as there was not many folks eating. I got a table with a nice view of the rest of the dining room. Very tastefully and elegantly appointed. Kind of a nouveau Chinese feel - I especially enjoyed the lighting fixtures hanging from the ceiling - check 'em out when you go in. Would be a nice place to take a dinner date if you both are hankering for good Chinese. My waiter was a little middle-aged Asian man who had all the personality of a decomposing log - he was very efficient though. Would have been nice to see even the hint of a smile. Might be a cultural thing - but what do I know. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and Shrimp with steamed rice. I was surprised at how quickly the food arrived once I placed my order. The Kung Pao was excellent - I can't remember tasting such delicious and succulent shrimp! I asked my waiter for some low-sodium soy sauce. I was informed they don't offer that. I was surprised. For those of us watching our salt/sodium intake - having a low sodium offering is important... The food rates 5 stars, but the fact that they don't carry low sodium soy sauce is enough to make me lower the overall rating by a star... The review I'm leaving is not about the food. The food is very good. The chicken lettuce wraps, vegetable lo mein, general t'so chicken are all very tasty. Those are some of our favorites. The review I'm leaving is about the service. The gentleman who I believe is the owner, is extremely rude. We had young children with us at dinner and the gentleman who waited on us was more interested in busing tables, taking orders and serving other diners before coming over to take our drink order. We sat for 40 mins with out our drinks or ordering. Finally he came to ask what we would like to drink, he forgot more than half our drinks. A friend at our table tried to order soup and egg rolls while giving her drink order and he flat out told her NO! That was so incredibly rude to tell a diner NO, when they are a paying customer. About 15 minuets later the food started to come to our table. The gentleman came over to the friends at our table and asked her to repeat her order. He did not even put her order into the system there for she waited another 15 minuets for her food to come out. This is the same friend that tried to order her appetizer with her drink order and he told her NO. He singled her out and was being downright rude to her. When it came time for us to pay the bill he added things to our check that we did not order. I kindly told him that we did not order sherbert, yet we were being charged for two. I asked him to remove that charge and he argued with me as to weather or not we had sherbert. He finally took it off our bill. After our friends and I signed our checks, the gentleman went back through our checks to see what tips we left him and stood there and stared us down as we left. The owner is so incredibly rude. Over the past few months I have ordered "Chinese" (actually, Americanized Chinese) food for lunch MANY times from several different Chinese restaurants in the Tysons/Vienna/Oakton area, and today I am going to review several of them, so you can check out all of these reviews to see my conclusions. I have been ordering takeout from Old Peking since the late 1990s when I lived in Oakton. And there is a reason that they have survived so long. That is because they offer excellent food and a great value. First off, the portions are large. I always easily get two meals from one lunch portion. And their egg roll is one of the largest in the area. The quality is very high. Their beef with green pepper in particular is amazing - and has been so consistently for decades. They give you a lot of beef, and the beef is always tasty and very tender. Never tough or chewy. The vegetables are fresh and crisp - never soggy. Absolute perfection! I am less a fan of the sweet and sour pork, for example, but it's still quite good. And the egg roll and fried rice are outstanding. The prices are higher than some other places, but the portions are so large and the quality is so good that it's still a great value. When you place or pick up your order, the woman who greets you is polite and friendly and their website and phone app actually work - hooray! Bottom line is that this has long been one of my favorite Chinese takeout restaurants in the Tysons/Vienna/Oakton area, and far and away my favorite place for beef with green pepper in particular.
