I'm not familiar with Nanjing cuisine, so it was interesting to try some of their signature dishes. The Nanjing salted duck is similar to roast duck, quite flavorful and tender meat, but without the crispy duck skin. The Nanjing dalu noodles is a noodle dish with thick gravy-like sauce and diced ingredients including veggies and tofu. My partner and I's favorites were probably the dishes that were closer to what you could find at your standard Chinese takeout spot in the area - the fish filet with tofu (which had a similar flavor to mapo tofu) and the pork in garlic sauce. That's not to say the other food wasn't good, I think we were not particularly used to the cuisine. The service is really nice and efficient. Three of us came to Nanjing Bistro for my birthday lunch. They have a great selection of traditional Chinese dishes you won't find at typical American Chinese restaurants. Our waitress was super friendly and spoke to us in Mandarin, which made the experience really warm and personal. We ordered Salty Duck, Chive Buns, Beef and Beef Tripe in Chili Sauce, Fish Filets in Pickled Broth, and Hot Pepper Stir-Fried Pork Intestine. Every dish was flavorful and authentically prepared. It was my first time trying the Salty Duck, and I liked that it wasn't too salty and had more meat than roast duck. Overall, we all enjoyed our meal. It was a Sunday afternoon and we wanted to take my mom somewhere for dinner - she's not picky, but since she's an experienced cook, it is difficult to get her to compliment any food. We were seated quickly when we arrived, and there were a few other groups already at the restaurant, but there was plenty of seating for us. We were drawn to the Nanjing area food, especially to the Nanjing Salty Duck, which the waitress informed us was the manager's own handiwork. It was very good, so I do recommend getting that. Other fare was ok, we got the Jiangzhe Style No 1 Mix Bowl, you can get that with spicy if you want, or not, but we got it mild spicy. There's many ingredients in there, and it's a satisfying bowl of soup - definitely not for just one person though so please share it with your group. The squirrel fish was also a hit, fried very crispily. I was not feeling well today and decided to come in for some kind of soup. I ended up getting the wonton soup (Nanjing style) with hot tea and it brought me back to life. I highly recommend trying the wonton soup their style, or Nanjing Style, because it's a little spicy and really good. This is a pretty decent chinese restaurant in a small mall area on fairfax. We ate here a couple of times, and the servers are very friendly- but we ordered takeout the most though and the food never disappoints. They are also pretty nice about adjusting menu items like asking for "tomato with egg" when it's not on the menu and also making some small changes to dishes. Definitely a great place if you want some traditional Chinese dishes in addition to the usual takeout chinese american foods. I've looking for restaurant in Fairfax and Chantilly area for a while. There seems to a shortage other than carry out. Found this and decide to try it for a late lunch. 3:00 pm. Based on the name it is a northern Chinese restaurant. Location has an interesting menu to include hot pots. I ordered the Mo Po Tofu that included ground pork. That is what i'm used to instead of just vegetarian. I also ordered Beef Chow Fun. Both dishes were on the salty side for my taste. Service was good. I think the prices were very reasonable for a Chinese place. The restaurant is a small location within a shopping strip along with other restaurants and shop with adequate parking.. Ok : Braised Pork in soy sauce was surprisingly bland but nit a bad thing. Was just expecting it to be more flavorful since it's braised. The sauce is very watery. But the pork was very tender and had good layers of fat and meat. Ok : crispy beef was crispy but too sweet and the dish was fulled more with celery than actual beef. We've had better. Miss : Spicy dry hot pot here must be a nanjing version, because it taste and looks nothing like a normal dry hotpot. It was saucy, not dry. I keep forgetting about this place because Yu's Noodle is in the same strip mall, but this place is legit awesome. I got the Wuxi style big ribs. Ribs were fall apart tender and the sauce is savory and slightly sweet. The stir fried rice cakes had good flavor and the rice cakes were soft and chewy. It needed a bit more seasoning but that was easily fixed with some of the sauce from the ribs and I also had a side of hot diced pepper marinated in soy sauce to add saltiness and heat. You have to ask for the diced hot peppers and then you pour in soy sauce to marinate. If the waitress doesn't understand, show them my picture of the peppers and they'll know, lol. I have passed Nanjing Bistro many times. For some reason I never went in and assumed it served Americanized Chinese food. How wrong I was! Nanjing Bistro is as authentic as it a great restaurant. I have now been back twice in two weeks. The salty duck and the tripe appetizers are very tasty. Last week I had the fish for two. There has been at least 2 occasions where I ordered take out hours ahead of my pickup time and when I arrive, they haven't even started my order. I had eaten here before COVID struck. I was back with my wife on a Saturday at lunch time. No lunch combos on Saturday; only Monday through Friday. We ordered the "Big Bun" which was tasteless. Crispy beef was good; but we forgot to tell them "do not make it hot"; we ate some, but took the rest home to give to someone else. My wife ordered the chicken with cashews which was OK. Nanjing Bistro truly is authentic with several pages of photos of traditional Chinese dishes just like what would be found in Nanjing; the "American style" dishes are on the last two pages. Wait staff were nice and took good care of us with refills on water and checking the tea pot. Next time, we will order more from the traditional pages with photos. read more

I think The food quality has gone down. Last year in May, I ordered the whole fried fish for my birthday and it turned out very salty as if the chef mistakenly swapped sugar for salt. It was inedible. The fish was still perfectly not rotting away after 3 days on the counter due to the amount of salt that unintentionally preserved the fish. Husband bought Groupon for this place so we tried it out. The space is nice and open. Last time we were in this place was when it was a Chinese restaurant, so a very long time ago. The servers were nice and attentive. We ordered several dishes that we are used to eating so we could compare to other Thai restaurants. Drunken noodle with chicken and shrimp fried rice were ok. Husband thought enough flavor, as I thought it was not as flavorful as other places. Couldn't put my finger on what was missing though. Papaya salad was good. Again, something was missing in the taste to me. Not enough sauce to flavor all the papaya slices. Shrimp Dangerous was fried shrimp surrounded by broccoli. I would of preferred stir fried broccoli vs steamed. Since the shrimp was fried, it would of tasted better for the broccoli to be as hot as the shrimp, but it was colder. I have dined in this restaurant for four or five times in the past few months and tried a variety of their dishes. I would say this is an authentic Chinese restaurant if you are looking for Shanghai and Jiangzhe style dishes. Dishes that me and my friends enjoyed: salty duck (盐水鸭), nanjing style shredded toufu, bean curd skin roll, soy braised pig feet, fish fillet in spicy pickle broth, pan fried mini pork buns. These are all dishes typical of the region of Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces except the fish fillet in spicy pickle broth. They were very delicious and among the best in the DMV area, IMO. However, my recent visit to the restaurant was a little disappointing. My friends and I decided to be adventurous and ordered some spicy dishes like numb and spicy diced chicken and double cooked pork belly. Both were below average, I might be a little hash here. the double cooked pork belly lacked flavor and they put cabbage in the dish. The other Jiangzhe style dishes we ordered were still good. So this made me believe that this restaurant specializes in Shanghai/Jiangzhe style dishes. If you stick to their specialty dishes, you will enjoy the food here. read more

The weekend has passed and even with the heavy case of the Mondays steamrolling by, I could not stop thinking about this place. The atmosphere is underwhelming but don't be turned off yet; it's to keep all the people who come looking for the usual Chinese takeout. Sure you can take out, at the food comes out lightening quick BUT do stay and savor the yum at your seat. Most of the dishes seem a bit more authentic with the spicy chili oils, and chili's hidden in the dishes but not everything is spicy. From the savory spiced beef to salt and pepper shrimp, the rice cake with veggies/pork is a crowd pleaser. The tofu with thousand year egg is my favorite and not to be missed. Nanjing strikes again! Piping hot, freshly made when ordered, and did not disappoint. Tried the home style fried tofu and three pepper stir fried chicken for the first time. Home style fried tofu would be a great protein-packed vegetarian dish option but my meat-eating husband loved the *spicy* three pepper chicken and would order it again. Obviously got the Szechuan fish fillet cause that's my go-to. Loooove this place. It is authentic, cheap for groups, and FAST. Every time I've been here, we've received our food within 15 minutes of ordering. Some dishes are pre assembled and you will get them within 5 minutes of ordering--nothing like instant gratification. Now if you're looking for General Tso's chicken or some other Americanized Chinese food, I'm sure there's a Panda Express nearby. But if you're looking for the REAL DEAL, some authentic, spicy, Sichuan food, Nanjing is the place to go. I love all their dish dishes, the duck neck (but only get this if you've had it before or are just looking for something SPICY to gnaw on), the cumin beef, the Chinese bacon with garlic chives (I think that's the name?), and basically everything else on the menu. I stopped by this restaurant on the way back from Costco with my girlfriend and ordered some nanjing style dalu noodles, hot pepper pork intestines, nangua bing (pumpkin sesame dumping) for dessert. The dalu noodles were chewy and the sauce was on point. The pork intestines were not too salty and the dish was flavored well. The dessert wasn't that good though - it was quite dry. All in all, this place was awesome. I used to eat their twice-cooked pork lunch special once a week when I worked closeby. I also had a Chinese new year dinner here with my friends. Mapo tofu is my all time favorite dish. I am too far away from where I usually go so I tried this place. Both times that I have ordered their Mapo tofu to go, it's been bland both times. The first time I thought maybe they were just having an off day so I gave them a second chance. The second time was also bland! It was so bland that I had to season it myself, never have I ever had to season food that I bought. If I knew I had to do that, I would have just cooked it from scratch. The point of eating out is so you don't have to cook that particular meal. So disappointed in their Mapo tofu, tasted bland like red colored water.
