Did a pickup order. I thought the food was alright. There could've been more flavor for the mapo tofu and moo shu pork. I would say the quality of the dishes we got were more on par with Chinese fast food while being more expensive. They also forgot one of our orders but I was able to get a refund for the missing dish once I called them. I recommend getting the coconut shrimp. read more

Ambiance: beautiful big bar with Asian decor. I'm not sure about the underwater guy in the front though. Service: quick service and good came out with little wait. Food: there was a blend of Chinese-American, sushi and Thai. I typically do not go to restaurants that have that many Asian cuisines on their menu because it looks confusing to me. I normally choose more 'authentic' style restaurants. I want to state that so my review doesn't seem too harsh. 2 of my friends and I shared the crab rangoons, Peking duck and broccoli. Crab Rangoon was average but I did appreciate the sauce wasn't the typical sweet chili sauce. Our main had great crispy skin but the duck was dry. I was disappointed since it was $69 so I was expecting it to be a lot better. The broccoli had great taste but u was surprised that it was American broccoli and not Chinese broccoli. We started with the fried chicken bao, which was saucy, crunchy, and paired perfectly with the soft, fluffy bao bun. My husband ordered the vegetable spring rolls, which he thought were just okay. Next, I had the Dynamic sushi roll, and it was excellent. The shrimp tempura inside was warm with the perfect crunch, which paired beautifully with the spicy tuna on top. For my entrée, I ordered the Singapore rice noodles, and they were by far the best I've ever had full of flavor and perfectly cooked. My husband had the fried rice with vegetables, and he really enjoyed his dish as well. We decided to give Songbird a try after looking at their menu. We were here on a Saturday around 4 p.m., and there were only two other occupied tables. An employee greeted us and he asked where we wanted to sit. We chose a table near the door. It had banquette seats as well as chairs. The decor here is somewhat quirky, especially the statue-like figure in a diving suit. To drink, my husband got a Tsingtao beer, and I got a yuzu-lime spritzer mocktail. I liked that mocktail as it was very refreshing. Our server was polite, friendly, and efficient. We both started with hot and sour soup. It was quite good, which we appreciated, especially since in recent times, we've had some less-than-stellar versions elsewhere. The soup had just enough "hot" and "sour" plus the amount of stock was generous. It was served to us along with a good-sized bowl of crispy noodles. For our entrees, we chose Ma Po Tofu and General Tso's chicken. We appreciated that all their chicken entrees have white meat. The Ma Po Tofu was a vegan version. It did have some spice, and we thought the amount of spice was just right. We also enjoyed the General Tso's chicken. It was properly prepared with just enough sauce. The portion was large, and we ended up taking some home with us. Each entree comes with jasmine rice, and we had enough left to take home with the chicken. A lot of the pieces were just fried breading and the chicken overall was over fried and a bit dry. I've been coming to Songbird for a while now--since they opened and took over the previous restaurant, Masala Wok. I loved their hot and sour soup. BUT after the rude and unprofessional front desk lady spoke to me when I tried to order the soup over the phone, that changed. She said it's "company policy" to order online, which is clearly not true. She was extremely condescending and abrasive. I know she's not the owner, but she's bad for business. Songbird is honestly a hidden gem that provides a dark and romantic vibe for a girls night out or just a casual night out with your partner. The atmosphere: Small and intimidate restaurant. Offers booth and bar seating, you'll get great experiences at both. The food: The five spice chicken wings are crispy on the outside and hot and juicy on the inside. Served with a sweet sauce, comparable to fish sauce, it was the perfect starter. My friends and I shared the Sticky Crispy Beef and the Fried Rice. By far my favorite crispy beef that I have tried. Came on a Sunday night and wasn't too crowded! They decorated the place very well, both for the Chinese American aspects and Christmas holidays. I had the HK Milk Tea Punch which was tasty, but don't really think it was worth $20 essentially. I had the sticky crispy beef which was pretty tasty alongside the free rice refills! Definitely more of Chinese American taste so expect that when you come here. Stopped by with friends for dinner. Located in a shopping plaza in fairfax, there's plenty of parking outside! Indoors is beautifully decorated with low dim lights. Mapo tofu: this was okay.. you have to pay extra to get meat added which was interesting lol the flavor was okay. Crispy beef: flavor was amazing! Beef pieces were crispy & was pleasantly surprised on this portion size. General tso chicken: portion size was pretty good however I thought the chicken could have been crispier. The sauce was very sticky/ clumpy & wasn't really spicy imo. Service was friendly & was waited in fast (including food came out very fast!) + side is that there is free rice refills! Overall, it's a decent place depending on what you're craving. This place definitely is higher in prices compare to other Chinese American restaurant. Update after my third visit to this great place! This will be my last update as I strongly believe I will be a repeat customer and will only say better things about this restaurant/cocktail bar every time. Atmosphere: Me and my friend came on a Saturday night around 10:30pm. Bar was nicely, dimly lit as always with very unique chinese decor hanging from the ceilings, a beautiful disco bar casting soft pleasant lights around the area, and a generally pleasant atmosphere for relaxed conversation and a comfortable bite. A few people at the bar chatting with each other and with the barowner, a few people at the booths having great conversation, very very good vibes all around. Service: As positive repeat customers, me and my friend had the pleasure of the owner and hostess each greeting us with a "long time no see", which I find very endearing. Service was quick and pleasant as always, as we do usually come outside of busy hours. We were attended to by all three main workers at the time between taking orders, delivering food, and providing details on the drinks and having a light conversation with us. Plates were unobtrusively cleaned up as we ate and I felt well-cared for. Food came out very quick and fresh, water was topped off often. We moved from the booth to the bar after finishing our food and the experience was just as great if not even more attentive. Food: We came in wanting drinks and a light dinner and were provided just that. We ordered Chicken Thai Basil, Egg Drop Soup, Dan Dan Noodles, and Crab Rangoon. The thai basil came with a side of white rice and was 100% spot-on for me: hot, fresh, great spice and flavor. The egg drop soup came with soup crackers; hot, filling, comforting. The dan-dan noodles tasted very bland to me but I do not have anything to compare it to as it was my first time eating dan dan noodles, so maybe it is just like that. I mixed it in with the leftover thai basil sauce and it was good. The crab rangoon had chives and some other things in the cream cheese that made it much more savory and definitely toned down the overall sweetness, which I absolutely adored. It paired amazingly with the orange dipping sauce that came with it. Overall fresh, hot, delicious. Drinks: Satisfying as always, good amount of alcohol for a light bite/cocktail bar experience. Barowner once again gave great insight on his drinks and why he designed them the way he did. He's had lots of drink experience and relays it clearly through how you get to experience his crafted drinks. Every flavor/note he listed was very apparent in each sip. Strong, bold flavors that give a nice buzz. Staff gave strong recommendations as well, I always appreciate a staff that knows/enjoys its own menu. Price: It is pricier than you would think coming in (at this time around $20 for most 1.5-serving dishes and single drinks), but for me I think the flavors absolutely justify the prices. $$-level prices for a $$-level experience and flavor, I personally think I got what I paid for and cannot complain about this. Some of it is traditional chinese food which I understand you can find for much cheaper elsewhere, but I do think some of that food just hits harder here. I have had plenty of mediocre chinese food from other places, I really think this place nails some of these dishes. Overall a great experience, I have had a great time with the staff as I generally came at less busy hours, but the way they present themselves I fully believe that they maintain top-tier service in the busiest hours, and I will see for myself one day. If you are good to them, they will be good to you, this is how customer service should be. I always come in person with friend(s) and do not plan on delivery/takeout as I come partly for the atmosphere. I will be back soon hopefully for April's signature "limited-time" drink. read more

Love the vibe and the menu looked good but we were only on a mission for drinks. She checked with the kitchen and they said everything uses the same oil. Thus, our (his) choices were more limited. We started with sashimi. He got salmon, eel, and octopus. I got salmon and eel. This place is a reflection of all the good vibes you could possibly ask for. If you're on yelp at night right now- torn between which place in the area to pick- I was in your shoes- PICK THIS PLACE! The bartender Nate and the other lady Brynn were so friendly- immediately were so helpful with the menu and drink recommendations and sent so much congratulations since we just got back from our Wedding! Later, the owners of the establishment came in (Jason and Angela) and were such happy, extroverted and hospitable people. Songbird continually came up on lists for must-go places in this area. I went with high expectations, but found the experience mostly mediocre. It has funky fusion ambiance and an acceptable selection, but nothing particularly unique or standout on the menu. Drinks were intriguing and I am a sucker for Asian-inspired cocktails, but a good portion of our drinks felt lacking in both strength and flavor.
