A really beautiful restaurant with a large whiskey and wine selection and delicious food

What a great find in downtown Fairfax! We had Blue Crab Croquette. to start the then lamb ossobuco and bronzino for the main course paired with a nice, albiet unique, Russian river Pinot Noir. The food was very nicely done, though the risotto was a bit undercooked (but not bad). Service was great, we were very well taken care. The restaurant itself was a good mix of elegance and casual, had a welcoming and clean feel to it. Highly recommend for good dining out! read more

American restaurant with a large menu of slightly expensive but delicious food and drinks, but without much of a vibe I came here on a Friday night for dinner with my fiance, and the place was pretty empty. Nice menu selection our friends were a little overwhelmed with the prices, but we made it work, one of them got a plain burger and the other got a salad with salmon(?). I was looking for a nice restaurant near our house to celebrate our anniversary and a co-worker mentioned those in Fairfax. Despite driving through Fairfax periodically, we've never stopped to experience its offerings and I figured this would be a good time during the work week. I searched Yelp and this restaurant was highly rated so I figured it was a win win. There is a small amount of parking behind the restaurant and a garage across the street with ample parking. I had made a reservation and with a note requesting a quiet table in a nice area which was acknowledged upon our arrival along with your anniversary by Joseph. My wife smiled and felt special that our anniversary dinner meant something more than a typical outing. The restaurant had a lot of availability with only a few other couples present. Joseph did a great handling everyone, providing time, offering suggestions, and following up as needed. I had the steak which I ordered medium and appeared to be cooked a little more than medium, but not a big deal. I enjoyed the steak although wasn't wowed by this thin piece of beef. I thought the few pieces of potato and zucchini were cute but could have been more plentiful. The sauce on the steak was ok although I would enjoyed a seasoned steak even more. All in all, ok-good. My wife had the Branzino which she said was overcooked. Having spent some years in Hawaii, she has a different appreciation for fish these days. The restaurant appeared clean, fresh, and new. I was looking for scratches or deterioration but didn't find anything. Service was really good. Joseph even brought us Creme Brule with a candle to celebrate our anniversary which wowed us. Dropped by after shopping to Tripp to Fairfax. Parking in the back. Happy hour until 630. Got a muddled Old Fashioned with a kick and a Modelo to start. For dinner I order the Ribeye.which came with potato wedges and a mushroom on top, amazing! The wife's One bar Grill burger had a huge patty and she loved it. The main courses were good My wife had the burger and enjoyed it and I had the farrow island salmon and it was perfectly cooked The crab croquettes off the tapas menu had very little crab meat and were mediocre at best. Tried this as a special date night restaurant but we're not impressed. The food was decent but expensive. The ambiance was a casual feel and nowhere close to the fine dining experience we were expecting. We had the shrimp with chili sauce as an appetizer that tasted great but was significantly overpriced for 4 fried shrimp (total appetizer shared between 2). I had the tuna which was very good and my wife had the chicken piccata. The wife's meal was significantly overcooked but still otherwise good. Overall I would compare this to a few steps down from Arties in Fairfax but a step above Outback. From an ambiance perspective, the multiple TVs around the restaurant with various news outlets was distracting from what was intended to be an intimate setting. 3 stars due to good food but we have no desire to return. read more

I came here recently with my girlfriend who wanted a drink before we turned in for the night. We ended up staying for three hours as they had a live entertainer who was playing an electric guitar. He had an amazing computer playlist and was so much fun to rock with. If you sit at the bar, you're provided with a complimentary chicken wing, which was good. We ordered a Cuban sandwich appetizer and Chorizo, Manchego, and Olive Skewers. Both were okay, although I doubt I would order the skewer again. I ordered a cheeseburger that was absolutely amazing. My girlfriend ordered creme bulee, which she loved. I drank dirty martini's and a beer. Fantastic martini. My girlfriend had an expresso martini and some type of mixed drink. She loved both. There's a nice ambiance here, although there really weren't many people. The dining section appeared okay, but I'm not sure that I would want to sit down and dine. For my taste, this is a nice bar. The restaurant sits in Old Town Fairfax, and I'm sure it's fun during summer. This is not a cheap place, but it's worth the experience. I'll definitely return when I revisit Northern Virginia. read more

We've been happy with service here in the past but we've gone twice with large groups (8-9 guests) and had a service was slow. We had a hard time getting our waiter to fill drinks and bring our food. The restaurant had no bartender so our waiter was doing both jobs, the paloma I ordered was bad, the tapas we ordered (which arrived after an hour) were cold. The food is actually good and I know they're capable of better service but it seems tough with a large group. read more

This place is a bit of a mess. They seem to be having staffing problems which led to an overall bad experience. The good. The server gave us a heads up about happy hour ending so we were able to beat the buzzer. Regrettably he didn't know what any of the available beers or wines were. Also the cocktails came a solid 10 minutes before the beer and wine. The rest was bad. Hairs in the salad. Overcooked meats. (Couldn't get this resolved because...) Completely absent server. They'd disappear for 15+ minutes at a time. Only refilled water when asked and even then only did one glass at the table then would take off. The server did notice I wasn't eating my overcook meal... at the very end. Which wasn't helpful. $150 before tip for three drink, three entrees, two salads, and two tapas. We really liked this place!!! Too bad it's not near our house because it'd be a great watering hole. The people are so friendly and the place is chill. We stopped by after dinner nearby to have drinks at the bar. The drinks were really delicious (handmade pomegranate juice in my cocktail) with a great selection of whiskey and bourbon. The tapas selection is a wide range of 20 yummy small plates. Will is such a good bartender! Best of all, they had this great guitarist named Eric for live music. The volume and tone were so pleasant that even sitting at the bar right next to him, my husband and I could still talk without yelling. We really enjoyed our visit. Our biggest issues were with food timing and staff. They either need more or different staff, or different managing of staff, which should improve timing. We began with a drink at the bar, which was fine - a glass of rose and an order from their premium whiskey menu, of which they have a very broad selection. After sipping our drinks, we moved to our table which is where things start to slide. The atmosphere is cozy and interesting - high ceilings, exposed brick, etc. - except for our booth near the back. One person gets to look towards the front of the restaurant while the other has a clear view of the restrooms. Once seated, a gentleman clearing tables nearby said our waiter/server would be with us shortly. That didn't happen - we sat for nearly 10 minutes without menus or even water. I asked the gentleman clearing tables if our waiter could stop by and for menus. He was very apologetic and jumpy, but helpful. A couple minutes later he returned informing us HE would be our waiter/server, and that there was a mix up between the bartender, manager and himself as to who would be our server. He nervously continued, clearly flustered, and shared the specials with us. We quickly ordered a cocktail, one of the drink specials and an appetizer special - mini crab and shrimp cakes. This would give us some time to review the menu and keep things moving along. (We have a sitter and need to be mindful of the time). One drink is delivered, and we ordered our mains - lamb and ravioli. Shortly after that the crab/shrimp cakes arrived - they came out quickly and were delicious - but one drink was overlooked. We had to ask again. A small thing, and the waiter/server quickly brought it over, but the small things are starting to add up. We finish our app and then we wait. And wait. I overhear our server apologizing to the table behind me for the delay. They ask to have their food to go and to include forks. Not a good sign. And we wait some more. About 30 minutes after we're done with our appetizer and nearly an hour after sitting at our table, the waiter/server nervously delivers our main dishes. He's nice enough, but he doesn't exude confidence or come across as comfortable, but rather uncomfortable... and we're starting to feel uncomfortable. Our meals are tasty - the lamb looked very tender falling off the bone, the ravioli was good - but we're running out of time. We could take our time eating our meals as we would have liked, and had to quickly ask for the check before finished eating. We might revisit the bar for their whiskey selection, otherwise we don't plan on going back. read more

For me, it was a 3.5 stars. I can't bump it up to a full 4 stars because the service was a little slow. I went in for a burger and it was pretty good, so no complaints there. Ambiance: Weird. 7:30p on a Saturday and the place as near empty. Advertised as a bourbon bar but we weren't given a bourbon menu, nor a wine list. The floors were sticky and it smelled of cleaner. Service: Weird. I'm pretty sure the owner/ manager was also our server. Tried to note a food allergy and met with a puzzled look and asked us if the allergens were listed on the menu. He also didn't seem to understand that tapas are your main course and acted like they were meant to be appetizers. Food: Tasty. The menu offers tapas on one side and a full appetizers and entrees on the other. We ordered 6 tapas and 2 entrees with mixed reviews from our table. Tapas are generally served on small plates. These were not. They were appetizer or entree sized plates. Ahi Tuna Cucumber was ok but it was served with a standard slice of white toast. Angus Beef Sliders (qty 2) w/ pommes frites (aka crinkle fries) were good. Braised Meatball (qty 2) was enjoyed. Flank Steak w/ Goat Cheese on toast (qty 3) was enjoyed. Baba Ghanoush (substituted since they were out of Hummus) was enjoyed. Chicken Quesadilla (substituted since they were out of Grape Leaves) was served similar to a burrito cut into 4 servings. One Bistro Burger had a sauce that was not listed so that gets a meh rating. Pepper Crusted Ahi Tuna was not as listed either since the seasoned rice with wasabi aioli was actually a wasabi rice, but the Ahi Tuna was enjoyed. Food - 4 Service - 4.25 Ambiance - 3 Overall it's a solid 3.6.. Food is good, not great. I got the Duck and it was yummy and the skin was crisp, but the sauce is sparse and the chopped potatoes could use more pizzazz. I also feel it could use a little bit of greens or veggies on the plate. Everybody else in my party got different dishes and I felt visually the same for all the other dishes. The drinks were fine, we went early enough for happy hour. One of the few things that separates a good from a great restaurant are the little details like the ice cubes. The old fashioned definitely needed a clear cube. I do give them some points for having one large cube instead of multiple though. I thought the waitress was very friendly, but it took some time to be welcomed at the table, at least 5 minutes went by, possibly longer. I also feel that the ambiance could use work. This is the 2nd or 3rd restaurant at this location, and they never change anything inside. It's a little old and outdated and definitely can use an upgrade. The tables are shaky, and belong in a burger joint, more than the restaurant that this one is trying to be. If you visit, try the parking lot behind the building otherwise you'll have to park across the street in a garage, give yourself at least 5 minutes extra. read more

This restaurant is a nice little hidden gem in Old Town Fairfax. I dined here last week with some colleagues after a work meeting. They have a very big menu with tapas style options, and you're bound to find something you like. I ordered the sliders and they were delicious. I also ordered the lamb dish to share and it was really good! The customer service was great and the prices were even better! You can't beat the happy hour specials. One suggestion is they should have some music playing in the background, it was pretty quiet when we were there. I'll definitely be back. read more

My wife and I were in the area visiting the kids and were advised it was Restuarant Week in Fairfax. Looked at the menus of participating restaurants and thought to try One Bar and Grill. Overall a good experience and we enjoyed Isaac our waiter who was attentive and helpful. Things of note: We chose the place for tapas; which it does very well. Presentations are on point, sizing is spot on, variety which speaks to the kitchen staff skills. Highly recommend the Bacon-wrapped date stuffed with goat cheese and pecans, the Flank steak stuffed with goat cheese, the Island shrimp, and the Pork Belly Moon Buns. The Spicy lamb was a little dry (surprising) and Organic beet salad lacked the punch of the balsamic vinegar, we found these just good not extraordinary. My wife enjoyed her pinot grigio, I thought the Raised by Wolves pale ale interesting but I would still categorize it as an American IPA. It had a subdued hoppiness which I appreciated (versus the grass I taste in most IPA's) and the citrus element made me ask if they had poured Blue Moon instead; but as I drank more of it and the hops came through, I saw it was my mistake. One think I am still taken aback by is that I had ordered a Sazerac as a cocktail. One of my friends has a whisky and gin distillery in Manassas, and I'm a Boomer. I'm not a bartender but I've ordered drinks around the world. A Sazerac is poured straight up and not served on ice. Even Isacc asked the bartender if it was the right drink. The reason is to prevent the dilution of the Peychaud bitters and the rye whiskey. It's the signature drink of New Orleans (not the Hurricane) and it is distinctive. FYI. Otherwise very good, choose a booth as more intimate unless you have a larger group. read more

Failed right out of the gate! I'm not giving up on this place, I will give them another shot., but here's my first impression. Upon entering we were greeted by an affable server who promptly sat us, we were a party of three, our server promptly asked us if we would like drinks, which we ordered and we checked out the menus. It was Fairfax City Restaurant Week, three courses for $40 The menu comprised of three appetizers,: Phyllo wrapped Brie with fresh cranberry compote and a balsamic reduction. Bistro green salad with fresh field greens, candied walnuts, Granny Smith apples, Montrachet cheese, and cider vinaigrette. Soup du jour which was shrimp bisque. Our dinner choices were: Hangar Steak open broiled, herbed mushrooms, maple glazed carrots, roasted potatoes with a Demi glacé sauce. Garlic Tuscan chicken, herbed brined chicken with a mushroom risotto. Cold water Salmon pan seared, jasmine rice pilaf, vegetables brunoises with a ver blanc sauce. Maine lobster stuffed ravioli, champagne rose cream sauce with reggiano cheese. Dessert choices were: Tiramisu Chocolate mousse cake Here we go! Disappointed right from the start, I ordered the Bake Brie app, was told they were out of it, then I ordered the soup, guess what, they were out of it!!, I didn't want the salad, so I was offered arancini or bruschetta, so I ordered the arancini, then for my entree I ordered the hanger steak medium rare, and the tiramisu. The food: The arancini were the size of golf balls over an splash of tomato sauce, they were good, but not shrimp bisque or baked Brie. The steak was small accompanied by two TWO potato wedges, and a teaspoon of mushrooms! Hey where were my maple carrots, my friend didn't get their carrots also, so we asked the server for carrots, he brought us each back TWO carrot slices! There was a flower on top of our steaks, if it's not edible don't put it on the plate! The steak was small and not Med rare, but the sauce was tasty. My wife ordered the steak also, what was delivered was absolutely not a hanger steak, but something that looked like a thin budget strip steak which she ordered med rare, and it was way over cooked! The Tiramisu was two thin pieces of cake covered in a coffee flavored whip cream, it was acceptable. We had a 6:30 reservation, you'd think the restaurant would be aptly stocked for the dinner rush. If you're presenting a paired down restaurant week menu, you'd think you'd be well prepared! I'm sorry, I always pull for newly opened restaurants, and Restaurant Week is a great opportunity for a restaurant to put its best foot forward, but One Bar and Grill tripped over their own feet! Highly recommend!!! I came here with a party of 3. We heard there was Old Rip behind the bar and couldn't wait to get a pour. The bartender was knowledgeable about his bourbons and even provided recommendations after we finished the Old Rip. I ordered the steak, it was perfectly prepared. This review is for lunch. My colleague and I went in for lunch on Thursday. We were the only patrons in the restaurant. I'm assuming it's more of a dinner crowd. I ordered the chicken Milanese and a coffee. The coffee leaves a lot to be desired. I would suggest getting some local roasters possibly ME Swing since it's Fairfax based. The dish was extremely well presented and it was delicious. I only took off a star for the service. The waiter was a bit clueless when I asked him what the restaurant was known for and he said the burger bc it was named after the restaurant. The burger. Maybe it is the star of the menu but why is it listed on the 9th line and my dish was first. I was really impressed by the bourbon list that they had and the prices were very reasonable for the area. My friend and I stopped by to have a drink and disconnect a bit on this beautiful Saturday. We sat on the patio in the most beautiful weather. Our server XR made our night. With his excellent customer service, and knowledge of the menu we had the best time thanks to him. Are a fresh salad, garlic shrimp, and mini quiche potato omelette was delicious. It is lined with wine selections and Mondays offer a complimentary glass of wine with an entree purchase. The tapas menu has a good selection of pork, seafood and chicken dishes.
