Braised Pork Belly over Rice (Lu Rou Fan) 1/5 Didn't have daikon like the menu stated but overall flavor was not there
    Jennifer H.

The service was great. Very sweet gal and very attentive shall I add. The food was alright, not bad, not great. You can make the food at home if not better, but it's cute. The ambiance was very chill Asian bar but catered to Americans more than the Asian palate.

Was surprised to find this hidden gem. They are aware of allergies, and gluten free items are labeled, but still limited. I did hesitate trying this place, I really wanted fried rice and it looks like they don't do tamari. But they had fried chicken with a sweet chili sauce and that sounded good, My husband said his Dan Dan noodles deserves a 5 star rating... and while the potstickers are only a 4, the sauce that comes with them is amazing. My eat noodles and shrimp everywhere we child was not impressed with her noodle bowl, she would get it again, but wouldn't go out of her way to come back here. Staff was very friendly and welcoming.

The entrance is cute, and the vibe feels more like a place to hang out with a drink and some snacks than a full meal spot. They've got a selection of interesting beers on draft -- didn't try any this visit, but saw one that was like a mango sticky rice that I'd love to try next time. Our server was friendly and offered a few helpful dish recommendations when we asked! Beef Noodle Soup - Surprisingly solid. The broth had a strong beefy depth with just a hint of spice, and the pickled vegetables added brightness and layered flavor. The beef itself was the highlight -- most pieces were tender and juicy, with none of the dry bits that sometimes sneak into bowls like this. Noodles were basic but effective, and they held the broth well. Portion was on the smaller side for the price but still filling. 3.75/5 Crispy Pork Belly - This was well-executed -- the top had a very crisp, almost shattering skin with no greasiness, and the fat melted down nicely as you ate. It's heavy, though, so better for sharing. The pickled vegetables on the side were a great touch and cut through the richness, and I'd definitely recommend getting a side of rice to go with it. 3.75/5 Scallion Pancake with Stir-Fried Beef - Not bad, but not memorable. The pancake was a bit too doughy and could've used more scallion flavor. Beef was a little dry and tough in spots. I wouldn't order it again - 2.5/5

We love trying Taiwanese food and wanted to check this place out for a while. If I were to sum this place up in one word it would be solid. Nothing really blew me away and nothing was bad. The apps were both fresh and fried well. The beef noodle soup had tender chunks of beef, but the brother flavor was just ok. The best thing was the braised pork over rice that had soft pieces of pork belly that went well with rice. A solid spot with decent prices for Taiwanese food. Hole in wall Taiwanese fusion style eatery. I love the minced pork w rice and their wide array of local brews. Friendly service, reasonable prices. Parking available behind the restaurant or you can park in the lot and walk.

love the selection of beer and food options. we got everything that peaked our interest and it was 10/10 i would recommend eating the tornado potato right when it comes out while its still hot and crispy. on tuesdays they have the chicken sandwich on happy hour menu and i plan to return. the popcorn chicken + pork belly both also really hit and we ordered rice on the side.

Spicy Dan Dan Noodles with braised pork belly (left) and lemongrass fried chicken over rice (right)

Nice small cozy vibes, staff was friendly & attentative and food was delicious. I ordered the fried chicken bao which was pretty crispy. I also got the spicy Dan Dan noodles with braised pork belly. It was very flavorful and started to get a bit more spicy over time but still delicious! The lemongrass chicken over rice had a nice lemongrass flavor that went well with the pickled cucumbers.

Thank you thank you to the wonderful & energetic staff for providing such amazing service!! Despite the relatively small size of the restaurant, the food really delivers hugely on flavor and variety. We loved everything we tried, especially the fried lemongrass chicken. My personal favorite was the pork and rice - a yummy Taiwanese classic. Overall, this was a great, casual place to eat good food and enjoy good beer (there were families there as well so it's still a family friendly place)! Parking is difficult (small lot behind the restaurant that's easy to miss), so you're better off finding parking in one of the nearby structures.

First of all I really wanted to give the place another try because the owner was so responsive via my Yelp review. The beer selection was great and the juicy tiles was refreshing. The service again was TOP NOTCH. I was here on 1/13/23 at 8 pm and the staff were super helpful and efficient. The food was a lot better than when I first tried it. I really enjoyed the Dan bung (but with a cheesy twist), the fried chicken was garlicky goodness, the Zhang jiang main had a great, light flavor, and of course the potstickers were a star. Again, the beers are extremely expensive. Would I go back? Sure. Just for the staff and service alone. I see they attempted to have sound dampeners in their dining space but it does get very very very loud just with people talking.

3.5/5! Best part of this was how comforting and cozy it the ambience was with music just loud enough to fill in the silence while being able to hear the other person. I love the large selection of plates available from various Asian countries. Service was great and quick. The food is good, but I felt that each plate was lacking something. I've never had popcorn chicken were garlic was garnished outside of it and there was a large lack of basil and I can say I wouldn't want that again. I think the beef inside the pancake was good but the scallion pancake itself lacked the crispy and flavor to complete it. The Zhe Jiang noodles I have little complaint about the flavor. I just wish it were in a bigger bowl that would allow for mixing, especially since most of the sauce condensed to the bottom of the bowl, leaving the noodles at the top flavorless.

Like Saturday, November 12, 2022 review of Jirani Coffee House I just wrote (2 weeks later), Friday, October 28, 2022 was one of those weird days where I traveled far from my home. There was a US Navy band concert at Hylton Center on the westside of Manassas (60 miles from home!), which I wanted to go to, and I'm an AMC A-Lister, so I combined with an Indian movie that was oddly enough only playing at AMC Herndon. On the way back from west of Manassas, I met up with 2 friends at a Fairfax music festival. Experience here: After the festival, my 2 friends & I walked to Ornery. They got food, and I just got a beer as I had already eaten dinner. My beer was solid, and the server was nice. Overall, this was a good place with a large variety of beer and seemed like some good food options as well.

We were seated right away by the host, and our waitstaff took our order quickly (as we'd requested.) The food was delivered quickly and was really good: five of us had a burger with varied toppings; one had a chicken sandwich. Everything was cooked properly to order, the burgers and chicken sandwich were very juicy, and the fries crispy. Unfortunately, the waiter failed to say they were out of slicing tomatos for the burgers (a standard complement). When asked, the manager came over to explain. Later, when the waiter brought the bill, it was $75 higher than expected, because our bill was combined with another table's bill. This was eventually corrected, we paid and departed. While the manager explained that the waiter was new, when addressing the lack of tomato slices, they didn't return to explain the error on the bill. While this is not an expensive place, we ordinarily receive at least an apology when this occurs. Some places go further, offering a free dessert, coupon for a future visit, or other complement to the meal. Not in this case, hence the lower rating. There is plenty of seating, an accessible entry, two unisex bathrooms, and plenty of TVs spread around if you're there to catch a game. No street parking, but the City of Fairfax has a structured garage on the same block, accessed from both University Drive and Chain Bridge Road. Parking in the garage is free for the first two hours.

There were very few customers. I grabbed a spot at the bar - in fact I had the whole bar to myself. Pete the bartender approached and I requested a menu. After looking it over, I found no oysters on the half shell - so I asked. Turns out, that is a separate menu. I ordered a dozen oysters on the half shell. They had three species on special - so I ordered 4-4-4 to make my dozen. And a pint of Goose Island IPA, and then the crab cakes appetizer. The raw oysters came out in about 10 minutes. Complete with a fresh lemon, horseradish, cocktail sauce, and mignonette. I also asked for some hot sauce - preferably NOT Tabasco sauce. Pete brought out two local hot sauces I've never heard of. I tried the first one - it was pretty good. I squeezed the lemon onto all the oysters, then added a couple of drops of hot sauce per oyster, and then some of the horseradish. Overall, tasty oysters. But a bit on the small size. The crab cakes were okay - a little bready from a texture perspective. The Goose Island IPA was cold and refreshing. Paid with a credit card. Service was good. #KellysOysterBar

It's nice to have a restaurant close by enough to walk to, but it's fairly mediocre Italian food…read more This is the second time I've gone and the food was still just ok. I got chicken piccata and my friend chose a pasta with red sauce and meat, I forget the name, but she told me it didn't have much flavor. I actually enjoyed my dinner, the chicken wasn't rubbery but also not very tender, and the sauce was what brought it together. It was lemony but not too overpowering as I know to many capers can make a dish sour and bitter. An issue was getting the server's attention, even though he was nice and attentive when he came by, he didn't really check on us, and I had to ask twice for the complimentary bread initially. My friend wanted to get another coke but we had to try and find him to flag him down, and honestly the restaurant didn't seem that busy, a lot of tables were empty, so I'm not sure if our little corner was forgotten. The other time we went, we both got different types of pasta with one undercooked and the other overcooked, which is why I avoided the pasta this time in favor of the chicken and broccolini. I'm not sure if I'll come back to try the pizza. At least the coffee was good at the end that I ordered, and my friend liked her dessert as well.

Many times, over the past years, we've driven by Dolce Vita, but we never went there for a meal…read more For us, Esposito's was where we went for Italian food. A couple we've befriended told us they lived in Fairfax for several years. They are big fans of Dolce Vita. We were told that a reservation is necessary as the place is popular. We decided to finally try Dolce Vita this past Saturday and reserved a table for an early dinner. When we got there, the place was practically empty. We were seated at a four-top table and were told that they had hosted a large party earlier in the day. They were still rearranging the dining room when we arrived. The staff was friendly and efficient. During our meal, the manager checked on us more than once. Alas, there is no sign in the dining room indicating where the restrooms are, so we asked the server for their location. Sadly, we weren't impressed with the food. We started with a bruschetta appetizer and also ordered some garlic bread. When the bruschetta arrived, it was very attractively presented. It consists of: "roasted garlic, tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzarella". The bread was tough and chewy, with little garlic flavor. We've had bruschetta before, and it was made with fresh tomatoes. I picked up a piece, bit into it, only to have half of the toppings fall on the table. The fresh mozzarella was basically 4 thin, small slices that one adds to their serving rather than a sizable ball of mozzarella. There was also a small pile of microgreens that were meant to be added to the bruschetta, an unusual addition. I ended up cutting up the bread, which wasn't easy. Nothing like having to fight with one's food. For my main course, I chose "chicken piccata," which consists of "pan-seared chicken and broccolini in a lemon, caper, and white wine sauce". The chicken breast was well prepared, moist, and tender. The sauce was fine, although I wished it had more capers. As for the broccolini, it was barely cooked at all, not even tender crisp. Again, I had to fight with a menu item. My husband chose to have "baked ziti bolognese al forno" which consists of "ricotta, tomato sauce, beef bolognese and mozzarella." He found part of a bay leaf in the dish. The dish was very cheese-forward, and the cow had walked through it, leaving very little of itself behind. In conclusion, we don't plan to return as it was rather disappointing.
