Redo of a post I made shortly after they opened. Let's see how they've improved, or not. Ambience - Sameas before. I will say that the City needed this venue. The Biergarten-style shared tables, the variety of beers, was an excellent add to a somewhat lacking bar scene in the city. Some quibbles: if you want to have a single line, enforce it, or put up a sign or arrow on the floor or some velvet ropes. Let's talk about noise: The decibels one is hit with in this concrete cave is ridiculous. How hard would it have been to drape some material nicely between the ceiling and the pipes in keeping with the beach theme to absorb it. It can be worse than the nearby music venues in terms of being able to talk to the person you're next to, but without the excuse that you're at a music venue! Prices - the beer prices are fine, we're already used to high prices for craft beer in the area thanks to High Side, but it'd be nice to have a rough idea what a pint costs. Like they say, if you have to ask... well I can, and it's not hurting the lines for beer. The to go cans are still a good deal though. The food prices are ridiculous for what you get. The suggested tipping options are based on sit down venues. If you want more than the usual tip per beer at a bar, don't make me stand in line at a bar and self-serve. Don't expect the 20-25% sit down venue tips if the waitstaff interaction is essentially a food runner you see once who tells you napkins and ketchup are "over there." Beer - best beer/brewery in Fairfax City, not that that is a major accomplishment. Low bar here. They've got good recipes and can consistently produce those beers/styles, unlike nearby breweries which struggle to produce quality beers or do so consistently. These aren't the best beers in Virginia, but they are some of the better ones in Fairfax City/County. Cocktails are a great addition to the menu for those not wanting beer. Burgers - they'd be fine (albeit usually burnt) bar burgers at $4 a burger, couple bucks for side of fries, because you're here for the beer. But... they're more expensive than Five Guys and not half as good. Recommend you try Kelley's, Arties or MacKenzie's for a decent smash burger. The Shebeen has been upping their game burger wise also. The Pizzas - if they could dial in the crust with consistency, this is the snack to get here. Have had them all and they are all good. One of the few places with green olives and would like a pepperoni and green olive pizza but the inability to ask for it (no waitstaff) is annoying. They're expensive. Really expensive. Recommend you try the nearby Old Dominion for eat in or delivery. Fries - best option on the menu. Add the cheese sauce side. The fry sauce is bleh. Wings - they're good. Pretzel - it's good, but then it's hard to mess up heating up frozen pretzels (although they have... pay attention to times in that wood burning oven for the bread goods!). In the dozen or two times I've been here, I've not tried the hot chicken sandwich--it looks good. Equally as overpriced as the burger though. This isn't the venue for a salad, so won't even pretend to review that. Would give this place 1-2 stars for food, 3.75 stars for beer, 5 stars for selection of styles of beers, 4 stars for ambience-fix the noise and you get 5+ stars, 2 stars for "service", 5 stars for the employees. I stopped by as part of an event where we got a free drink ticket. I had a lemonade and it was delicious! It was a sweltering hot day and I had been outside for 3 hours so it was perfect. I also ordered a Smashburger and grape slushie (?) both were yummy, except I didn't eat the fries. They were too thick for my liking honestly. 4/5 Multiple visits, 2023-present. We have been visiting since they opened in old town Fairfax. This has been a welcome improvement to old town. The beer is pretty good across a wide variety of styles from IPAs to sours, to stouts. The food is very good and usually comes out pretty quickly. We don't always eat there but it's never a bad option if we don't want to go to another restaurant. The service is usually pretty good with the bar staff being able to keep the lines moving when it does back up. The seating space is good and usually offers a pretty lively environment. The value is good if not great. You definitely get a good product for a fair price but it's not the cheapest place around. read more

This is such a fun spot for group hangouts and I only noticed it driving by, I had not heard of it before. Went on a Friday night with a group of 8-10 people and we all throughly enjoyed it! I got the passionista, and mango bunny, they were both great but I particularly enjoyed passionista. They have a great selection of beers, many of which are fruity and easy to drink. I got the bianca pizza as well which is as nice and garlicky! They also have board games which we weren't able to play this time, but I certainly will next time. Great atmosphere and location is pretty cool being downtown Fairfax city with plenty of places to walk to. The biggest downfall is that they don't use their bar so lonely patrons really have no where to sit. Oh what a unique find! Located in old town Fairfax, near East Wind, and across from the gas station, I never once looked at this location, and thought nothing of it. This new brewery, provides open indoor and outdoor seating. It is a large spot. You can scan the QR code for food, but you need to order at the register. The beer! I like a good stout, and Beowulf did NOT disappoint! It was so good! My friends got a beer with a lot of passion fruit and citrusy notes. I forget the name, but it was fruity and tasted like a cider! It was very light and if you like something sweet, this could be the one for you. The food! Omg everything was SO DELICIOUS! Wings: spicy and flavorful! Idk why they put wings and sauce with the beignets and sauce, but I almost dipped the wings into caramel or chocolate Pizza: we got a vegan pizza and surprisingly it was pretty good! Commonwealth Brewing Company is a coffee shop, brewery, cafe, and pizzeria. The large multi-use space is the perfect place for gathering a group of friends and just hanging out. There truly is something for everyone: + The boys loved the selection of brews (bartenders were so knowledgable and helpful) and college football playing on the big screen + Mamas loved the hybrid coffee shop options with matchas, fancy coffee cocktails, and cute branding + Kiddos loved the game cupboard (giant uno anyone?), shuffle board, and pizza. You can watch them yanking the pizzas right out of their wood-fired oven and they were surprisingly really, really high quality. The QR ordering system + extra long tables made this an ideal gathering spot for our group of friends. If you love Caboose Commons, this is a worthwhile alternative with a completely different vibe. If you haven't been here, it's a massive spot. So massive that several businesses have struggled to survive in this area. The brewery has been here for some time and it's usually busy, so that's a good sign. We sat outside because the weather was finally nice. They have QR codes on the table to purchase food and drinks. We walked up to the waitresses for the drinks. It wasn't that busy, and I hate when they act like they are so busy. At one point, we got a beer, that was gross and asked to exchange it. They have good beer, but the environment is not relaxing and you can't have a conversation with the person at the end of the table. Solid newish brewery in the Fairfax area. I love their large outdoor, dog friendly patio and all the events offered throughout the year. The overall atmosphere is fun and can get really packed. They have a lot more potential if it weren't for the service - it can be hit or miss. Some of the staff is friendly, sometimes they're not, and sometimes orders via the QR code on the table take awhile (they forget/don't notice the ticket orders). I also wish they offered more alcohol free options; depending on the bartenders, some are more willing than others to whip together a mocktail. Cool spot in Fairfax! We stopped in to check it out when meeting friends in the area so we just grabbed a quick drink and didn't stay long. There were some cute holiday vendors the day we were there. We did not try the food but it looked good. The vibe was very cool, we would have liked to have stayed longer. There were plenty of tables so you could have a larger group here and they had a live band playing, so that was fun! My boyfriend and I really enjoyed stopping by for pizza and beer on Memorial Day! The beer selection is amazing and there are so many fun flavors to try. We got the orange Julio (tastes like orange juice!) and the peanut butter and jealous (berry and peanut flavor. Unique and good!!). Both tasted great and I'll definitely come back to try more from their menu. We also ordered the Appolonia pizza (sausage, peppers, onions, olives, cheese) which was decent. Nothing special. For a $20 pizza I was hoping for something better but it did the job and was split perfectly between 2 people. The inside was super spacious with plenty of seating. There was also a nice patio where some people brought their dogs. There were some board/card games on tables for people to play and several hook & ring games. This place is okay! Nothing bad but also nothing truly stood out. The food was mediocre. The pizza had good crunch but lacked a lot of flavor. They do not allow you to add more toppings. We ordered beer cheese and ranch on the side for a $1 or $1.50 more. They didn't fill the beer cheese to the top? Although it tasted like nacho cheese from a 7/11 machine. They were also sold out of a lot of food items this particular Sunday evening. Their drinks are fun and tasty. I liked that they had so many options and allow you to taste the drafts beforehand. They even have a cocktail menu up on the board. Staff was friendly and polite. The overall atmosphere is very nice. It is a large space but too bright and too loud for me. Since moving to NOVA, Commonwealth has been our go-to hangout spot, and I genuinely think it should get more reviews on Yelp. Benefiting from an earlier library venue, this place is spacious and good for any time of the year, thanks to its large patio. The colorful, rich beer menu and the generous sampling policy, you should certainly interact with the staff on what you are looking for and their recommendations. We came here with a big group, including our nephews, and everyone had such a great time! I loved the diverse game selection. The boys enjoyed playing card games and uno. We are big fans of commonwealth beer, and really enjoyed sampling through their massive beer list! We got to try a bunch of new and delicious flavors. The pizzas were scrumptious, too. My favorite was the Diavolo pizza, which had crispy pepperoni, spicy honey, red chili and garlic. The only issue (through no fault of the brewery!) is that the place was packed when we went and sooo loud. I could barely hear the other folks in my party. read more

We didn't have a server taking orders and getting it all bungled. Each order had their own name but orders were dropped at the kids table without any effort of whose name was on the order or what it was. Kids were digging right in. Then it kept happening, and I asked the server who the order belonged to and he said "I'm just putting them down." And I told him each order had their own names on them- everyone is not on one check. He eventually said the name, which I helped to deliver to the right family. East. He could have done it too. But this was causing delays, missing orders, over cooking in the kitchen, resulting in wasted food, and back up in the kitchen. Just yell the name on the order and say what the order item is next time. Let's have a goal of "100% accuracy" and nobody is required to take any orders! Food was still pretty good. read more

The bee is excellent, goes almost without saying. Which begs the question... why have just one to two of your employees serving it? The line is to the back of the restaurant for an hour and you can't add anyone else behind the taps? Why allow people to reserve huge portions of your establishment and hold it for an HOUR after their reservation time? It's so disrespectful to people who come in and want to eat and drink to see a third of your dining room roped off for 45-50 minutes waiting for people who have no respect for others time, while the rest try and squeeze into the remaining spots. I'm just some guy. Never ran a restaurant before, but I love the beer. Can't really recommend this place as long as they keep running it like this though. read more

Walked into Old town Fairfax and stopped in at Commonwealth Brewing, quite the place to be, huge crowd and a few minute wait for beverages. Which worked out for us, gave us time to pick the perfect choice. A lot of indoor seating and outdoor as well(so bring your pups). The drink selection board for beverages is crazy huge(see pic) and a wide variety of different styles of drinks. A seasonal favorite of my wife's is the Mimosa drink, usually around spring n summertime. Pleasantly surprised to see a nice list of fall drinks, that were not beer(see pic). Ordering food is very simple, scan the QR code at your table and select some good pub grub types of Apps. and they have a wood fired pizza oven. We tried the pepperoni pizza today, and it was fabulous. ( a little burnt for my taste, but it was delicious). The soft pretzel looked real good, but we were stuffed and will try pretzel next time..with a smash burger. Seasonal drinks. My wife had the gin garden and loved it. Commonwealth Brewing Company is a fun indoor/outdoor experience with a vast drink menu. While we didn't get any drinks, the Boardwalk Fries were AMAZING! The perfect blend of pepper, Old Bay, and salt that really hit the spot as we waited for our dinner reservations. The menu is given by QR code scan and the staff brings out each item quite fast. The store is clean and has nice picnic tables throughout the restaurant. Very spacious and great for large groups! Some beer enthusiast bars around here used to occasionally stock kegs/cans from their Virginia Beach spot prior to their NOVA establishment. The atmosphere at the brewery is unmatched. Fairfax needed those laid-back beach vibes that they deliver. Their pizza is fantastic, and the team is so attentive and friendly. I've already visited three times and I've got to check out their upcoming brunch events. Their extensive beer selection caters to all tastes and includes cocktails.
