I could tell guests who come stay a long time to snack and drink beer, so I guess my friends and I came to the wrong place for dinner. We ordered a bunch of appetizers, thinking we'd get authentic Taiwanese foods, but the popcorn chicken had too much better and the scallion pancake tasted odd with cheese and I'm not even sure what sauce. We also got beef skewers, which tasted better than the other appetizers, but I really don't think it was worth. My lemongrass fried chicken was better than the popcorn chicken, but I honestly felt pretty dissatisfied with this meal. My friends liked their pork belly over rice as that tasted the most authentic, but we all had lost our appetite by then. Food: Food was 5/5! I ordered the scallion pancake w/ stir fried beef and that was my absolute favorite. The flavor and texture was amazing. For my entree I got the Dan Dan noodles w/ pork, it was spicy and flavorful, but could def use an acid like lime. It was good, but the pork belly w/ rice was better. My friend ordered the shrimp & garlic noodles and said it was basic, she kept trying to doctor them up to make it better. Lol! We're foodies, so if you like complex flavors, this probably isn't the food you should orders the tornado fries were delicious. I thought it was going to be hype but it wasn't, they were worth it. Had dinner at High Side last night for the second time this month and it was awesome both times. We ate Mala Pickled Cucumbers, Tornado Fries, Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken, Pork Belly Bao (my unexpected favorite), Cold Sesame Noodles, and Spicy Dan Dan Noodles. Everything was delicious. The only change from our first time there was swapping out Sweet Potato Fries for the Tornado Fries; both are fantastic! This is a hole in the wall restaurant located in the heart of Old Town Fairfax, right next to a gas station. There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant, but I would recommend parking in one of the free garages and walking there. Upon entering we were greeted by the server and she was super friendly and sweet. I am trying to remember her name but she was really pretty so hopefully that helps! The restaurant itself is very small so if you're worried about social distancing, this might not be the place for you. We came in right around opening so we enjoyed very quick service but I can see how this place can get packed and busy quickly, seeing that she seems to be the only one working on the floor. This is my first Yelp Elite - Event Review and I will keep it unbiased as always. High Side is a very unusually interesting place. Its retro aesthetic on the inside makes it into a great hip brewery which definitely pleases my eyes because I love the retro design aesthetic. Combined the tapas style Asian street food options- it makes the place into a delightful experience. Now let's talk about service. I think it needs a little work but for the most part the level of courtesy is good. The beer menu is absolutely fantastic and it is a great spot for a bunch of friends/coworkers to get together and have a blast. Food - I think with food it also needs to stand out a bit more if it wants make its mark. That said I really enjoyed the tornado fries. So many delicious options it was hard to narrow down! When we walked in we were greeted and taken to an empty table. The menu is a QR code you can scan and the employees are really good with checking in on you periodically. They have several beers on tap that sounded great, but we didn't try any. This is a cute little place in Fairfax. There is parking behind the restaurant. A sign will indicate where parking is but easily missed. There are free public parking around. I wouldn't say the dishes we tried at High Side are authentic Taiwanese food. The flavor is tailored more toward to American taste buds or fusion style. They do have Happy Hour (HH) offers in both drinks and appetizer, you can ask the server for additional details. As you use the QR code to see the menu, some appetizers (Small Plates) will also indicate what's included in the HH. We ordered the following: * Taiwanese Pork Belly Bao * Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken * Braised Pork Belly over Rice * 3 Cup Tofu over Rice * Ube Cake The Taiwanese Pork Belly Bao is flavorful. The authentic way is with ground sugar peanuts but our bao did not have that. Instead, we had the chopped up peanuts, which loses it's overall authenticity. Still good though. The Taiwanese Popcorn Ck was first marinated then fried. The authentic way is to douse plentiful of the salt/pepper mixture. This dish did not have the heavy presence of salt/pepper. The chicken is very crunchy. The dish also came with a sweet chili dipping sauce to give it a different variation. There are two styles of the Braised Pork Belly over rice offered. One kind is the diced up pork belly and the second type is the big slab of the pork belly over rice. We picked the big slabs instead. This dish has very strong flavor of the 5 spice and also cinnamon. The pork belly was very nicely braised (definitely the highlight). Pork fat tender and melty and the meat was soft. This is the same pork belly as the bao. Initially, we thought there isn't enough sauce to go over the rice but at the end, we didn't think the rice was dry. The rice they used in the rice dishes are good rice. Bouncy and chewy texture of the rice also able to soak the sauces. YUMO! The most 'unauthentic' dish would be the 3 cup tofu over rice. The tradition flavor of the 3 cup wasn't there for me but still a good dish to eat. There was a lot of sauce (a bit too much for me) but with rice, it was good. The tofu was fried to the level of VERY crispy and for me, missing that tender middle of the tofu texture. The marinated cucumber was very much on point. I would say it was my favorite 'dish'. The cucumber was crunchy and with good flavor from the marinate (garlic, sugar, vinegar and hot oil). The dish is very garlicy and great tasting. If you go on a date, I would suggest you reframe from ordering the popcorn ck and the cucumber unless you and your date both like garlic. The Ube Cake was a nice finish. The flavor of the ube was good. The texture of the cake is soft but not chiffon cake soft. Still great flavor. The experience was pleasant and good. The atmosphere was relaxing and inviting. Wanted to grab dinner on our way out of Fairfax and we haven't been here in a while. We placed an online order on Toast Tab and it was super busy, 50-60 min wait time but we figured why not. We ordered a bunch of different things to try out, fried chicken bao, pork belly bao, potstickers, tornado fries, garlic noodles w/shrimp, and lemongrass fried chicken. Pick up was a little difficult at first. I wasn't aware that there was seating out back and it was a little tough to get to the alley to park. We eventually found some retail parking a couple of blocks away. We also didn't get the pick up text at the estimated time so we just headed over eventually. If your feeling indecisive, they have the option of 4oz pours. We got the Back Bay's Farmhouse Brewing Tiger Style (local) and it was probably one of the best beers I've had. For appetizers, we got Taiwanese Pork Belly Bao and Lemongrass Fried Chicken small plate. Main course was the much hyped braised pork belly over rice and Taiwanese zha jiang noodles. The stars of the show was definitely the Pork Belly Bao and braised pork belly over rice. Whatever they do to the pork bellies is amazing, whether it be in a bun or over rice, but I can see why my cousin called me. Since I had a yelp elite experience to partake in, I brought my entire family to have lunch at the High Side. We arrived 10 minutes before their opening, but they let us in to sit down. Because we were the first ones there, we had our choice of seats and got wonderful customer service. We first ordered the tornado fries. We loved it! My kids only wanted to eat this because it was so good. Great flavor, incredible crispiness, and great presentation. We ordered the sauce on the side since the sauce is slightly spicy, and our kids are notoriously bad at handling spice. We also ordered the egg fried rice with sausage, the teriyaki beef skewers, and the popcorn chicken. All very good. If I have to complain about anything, it would be the skewers. This was my favorite dish and would actually recommend the appetizer since it seemed to come with more chicken (which is confusing since the small plate is cheaper?). The chicken is crispy, crunchy and garlicky! The meal comes with the chicken, rice, a fried egg and cucumbers. For those spice sensitive - the mala cucumbers that come with the meal are actually so spicy. They also have a ton of beers on taps and ciders! We tried a couple of their ciders and everything was really good! The food is a tad on the expensive side, but probably on par for the area. My order of tornado fries and popcorn chicken were ready quickly, but I ended up grabbing a seat at the bar and checking out the beer menu. I'm not a big beer drinker, but I do love sweet ones. The server let me try two ciders, which were both great, but then I saw the name Triple Strawberry Marshmallow Shake and just had to try it. It's called a sour, which is always a little scary for me, but it was really sweet and such a treat. That was the winner! I enjoyed my drink without feeling rushed and took my food to go. High side is one of those places where everything - both food and drinks - are just so on point. If you're a beer lover and would love to have a curated meal with craft brews from parts of the country you wish you would be able to go in COVID, come to High Side. If you miss your days of backpacking through Taiwan or Southeast Asia and would love to have a bite of street food with that awesome side of "never found anywhere else" porter, come to High Side. High Side has introduced me to a many types of boubon-barrel aged ales that led me to take up a beer membership with one of the breweries they get beer from. Like that, this is a small place in the heart of Fairfax City that opens your eyes to a lot of flavor and more. Here's a detailed review of some of my favorite dishes, as their tap changes. - Scallion pancake with egg (4.5) - If you want something in between an app and a main, go for it. Afterwards, you may wish that you had some meat, so I would pair it with something else. - Scallion pancake with beef (4.5) - This is a great dish where the beef really shines. Because the beef is so great, the pancake does lose its luster a little bit. - Lu Rou Pork Belly Bowl (4) - The flavors are authentic, but compared to the other dishes, it does pale a little bit in terms of the fattiness and the gaminess of the meat. It's a slightly different variation than the minced pork lu rou fans you find. - Dan Dan Noodles (4) - Perhaps it's because the other dishes are so great here but this isn't my favorite, though it has solid flavors. This is somewhere between a peanut-y dan dan noodle and a sichuan spicy dan dan and I feel like the flavors get muted somewhere in the middle. If it could go one way or another, I think the flavors would be a bit more crisp. - Tornado Fries (5) - Surprisingly great despite a simple concept. It's a great app to share. - Popcorn Chicken (5) - This outdoes any other variation found in a boba shop. There's not too much batter and the chicken is juicy inside so you don't feel like you're just eating the "popcorn" without the chicken. The basil isn't overpowering either and the portion size is great. - Garlic Noodles (5) - This is my hands down favorite dish here. What they did to create such a buttery garlic texture, I don't know (and don't want to know) but they nail the sweet/salty/spicy taste that I could eat this for days. read more

I've been wanting to try this place and thanks to the Yelp elite event they hosted, I was able to go! I have never been to a restaurant/bar like this before. It is modern with a cool/chill vibe. No TVs so don't plan on coming here w the boys to watch the big game, but it's definitely a good place to gather with a small group or a date. Their beer menu was extensive and delicious. We had the tornado fries which were pretty close to potosi chips, and then we tried the duck bao buns and beer teriyaki skewers. The bao buns are verrrry different... like a pancake but thicker and softer and shaped as a taco. Everything was delicious. Love this place! Great place to drink beer, eat tapas, and catch up with friends. The drink and food selections were nice and I had a difficult time choosing what to eat/drink!!! When you order, you actually order at the cashier and that is where they will serve your drinks. If you order food, they deliver it to your table! For parking, theres a small parking lot right behind the store. It is a bit small and you have to go through the small alley next to store. I ended up getting the 4oz ace cider berry rose. I love hard cider and this was delicious!!! It wasn't too sweet and had a nice fruity taste to it! Highly recommend this drink! For tapas, I shared the tornado fries and popcorn chicken with a friend. The popcorn chicken wasn't anything special. It was just....popcorn chicken. No special seasoning on it. Actually it lacked some flavor if I don't dip it in the sauce. BUT the tornado fries...SO GOOD. Its like a potato wedge, but thinner! It had like mayo sauce on it which I thoroughly enjoyed.
