My absolute favorite place to eat! Could not recommend the Guinness beef stew enough, delicious!

As someone visiting from Los Angeles, I honestly did not expect to find an Irish pub in Virginia that would rank up there with some of my favorite spots back home, but The Auld Shebeen absolutely delivered. The staff was exceptional from start to finish - welcoming, attentive, genuinely friendly, and the kind of hospitality that makes you want to stay awhile. You can tell the team takes real pride in creating a warm atmosphere instead of just turning tables. The food, drinks, and overall energy were fantastic, but what really stood out was how authentic and comfortable the experience felt. Places like this are hard to find anywhere, let alone outside a major city. I've spent plenty of time in LA dining all over the place, and this spot genuinely hangs with the best neighborhood pubs and gastropubs out there. Every time we come here, I tell my husband, "I feel like I just travelled to Ireland." I really like how cozy and inviting The Auld Shebeen is. I'm a fan of their chicken pot pie and sticky toffee pudding. I've also had their fish and chips in the past and my husband liked their cheeseburger. Everything we've had so far has been solid. Fun place to go! Live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays, good beer choices and great food. Service was very good too. The potato leek soup is creamy and tasty. A great Irish pub in the heart of Fairfax City that a friend recommended. It was a great choice as the large bar serves an outstanding selection of Irish (Guiness, Harp, etc,) and other beers on tap as well as a great selection of whiskeys (Bushmill, Jameson, scotches, etc). In addition to the great selection of libation, the food to pair the beer is just as great. I ordered the Reuben and my buddy ordered the fish & chips. Large portions and great tasting, especially with a tall pint of Guiness. During our meal, we were serenaded by a traditional live Irish group playing music - a nice touch! Great décor, vibe, drinks, and food - about the only downside is parking. My friends and I came for brunch this past Sat. This is only my 2nd time eating in Auld Shebeen. I like the Irish ambience and the food was really good. I ordered French toast off the menu. I enjoyed listening to the Irish band rehearsing. My only complaint was our waitress. Emily seems a little gruff with us. She wasn't nasty, but wasn't overly friendly either. When I first arrived I was greeted by a blonde waitress, I didn't catch her name, she was very nice and I told her I was waiting for my group to arrive, she checked with the manager to see if it was okay if I waited. She offered to get me something to drink. One of the members of my group doesn't eat in pubs too often, he said the noise level was a bit much for him. I wasn't really bothered by it much. What an excellent evening on a non- crowded night! We were greeted by our waitress who suggested we try the pretzel and it was one of the best pretzels I've ever had. My food choices were excellent with a Caesar salad and the fettuccine Alfredo. I liked the cream sauce along with mushrooms, tomatoes, and broccoli. The caramel cheesecake was an excellent choice for dessert. Customer service was great and I'm sorry I forgot the waitress's name. We had a nice evening visiting friends and we lingered about 2-1/2 hours chatting and did not feel hurried to leave the restaurant. I will definitely go again. The atmosphere is nice. read more

My family tells me their chicken curry was good, the chicken club was excellent, the service was fantastic and the restaurant was clean. Why 3 stars? Because the shepherds pie was the worst I've ever had in my life. I traveled for a living and shepherds pie and a pint are my go to comfort foods when on the road. I must have ordered it from a thousand different restaurants in my lifetime because it's a difficult meal to screw up. On occasion it's too salty, but never flavorless. This one tasted like boiled beef thickened with flour. Did your kitchen run out of spices and lamb? Whoever prepared that dish today needs to find a new profession. read more

We were around and I wanted to stop in. The place itself is not the biggest and can get busy so we decided to sit at the bar. The irish pints were about $10 so really the same as their cocktails. The fries were not bad and the atmosphere/live music was good. If you are nearby and want an irish pub experience then this is probably going to satisfy that for you. read more

Came in this past Saturday and sat at a high top near the bar. We were at right away and people slowly trickled in after us. They had live music, which we didn't expect but it was a nice surprise. Service was GREAT. Both the waiters and bar stuff were all very attentive. We ordered the spicy cowboy burger, chicken club and the Irish spring rolls. The food wasn't very hot, but it wasn't cold. The spring rolls were the star for me. My partner enjoyed the burger. I felt like it could've been seasoned more, and the dried jalapeños tasted a bit stale. The chicken club was SO thin and the texture was OFF. We didn't finish it... Overall we would definitely come back, but it might be best to stick to the classic Irish dishes here! read more

Missed by one day! We went to AS on the Thursday just before the 4th. I chose the steak and mushroom pie. It was generously sized with super tender steak and a savory brown gravy. My, oh my. I've driven past this place many times but never ventured in until recently. We have a friend who works as a server here (shout out Andrew) so a friend, my partner and I decided to stop in to celebrate an award. We ordered the St. James Gate Guinness Beef Stew. Absolute 10/10, I loved every bite! I would SO get this again as someone who loves mashed potatoes. My friend got the braised short rib as she had it last time and loved it. My partner got the BBQ short rib sandwhich and really enjoyed it as well. Since it was HH we also participated in the drink portion and thought the drinks were well worth the price. I would definitely come back here! Andrew let us know they also do fun themed karaoke and dance nights as part of a late night initiative which we also plan to check out in the near future! There is ample space both booth seating, table seating and bar top. There is no reserved parking for them so consider the garage adjacent to it which is free. read more

Came for restaurant week lunch and we were very happy with our meal. Had it not been for restaurant week, we would not have known about this place. We opted to try their potato leek soup and a salad for balance. The soup was quite flavorful and the soda bread was perfect as a dipper. The salad was standard and nice to help cut the heaviness of the soup. Our server was very nice and came by to check in. The restaurant interior felt like it transports you out of Fairfax and into a pub in Europe. After our apps, we both received our pies. The chicken pot pie was not your traditional one with a crust on the bottom and top. Instead it had a puff pastry laid on top. Sadly, the pie itself was not all that warm and it lacked flavor. The pastry was quite flaky and buttery but unfortunately, I would wished for the traditional crust. The shepherds pie on the other hand was delicious. The crust on the top of the mash with the saltiness of the beef was delicious. It is quite filling and could easily be shared between two people or even split across two meals. By this point, we had forgotten about dessert. When our server brought them out, we both looked defeated. The shortcake was more my favorite but both were delicious. We just wish we had made room for them. Definitely come hungry. read more

Auld Shebeen is a cool Irish pub in Old Town Fairfax. You feel welcome from the moment you walk in. My husband and I visited for dinner on a Sunday evening and had no problem getting a table without a reservation. They seated us overlooking the bar, which was perfect. We could see everything and watch the football games on their televisions. We started with an order of drinks. Smithwicks is always a solid choice. We also tried a cocktail from their holiday menu, the Bourbon Kiss, and it was delicious. The baked brie is amazing, definitely get it. The beef stew was just what I needed and my husband said his burger was really good, not to mention huge. I also tried the mulled wine and it was a lovely warm drink to end the evening. Came here for St. Patties day and didn't realize how LOVED this place is hahaha. They had a lot going on. They charged a $10 cover to enter, even if you're there to order a meal. I thought that was kinda lame. The vibes here were EVERYTHING, they had Irish dancers and live music. We did not reserve in advance so we had to do bar seating which was first come first serve. Theres an upstairs and a downstairs area. There's a parking garage across the street it's a small lot, but I believe it was free. The drinks in tap were really good! We ordered Guinness which was delicious. We ordered: Sticky Toffee pudding 7/10 Shepards Pie 8/10 St. James Gate Guinness Beef Stew 100/10 Fish & Chips 8/10 We literally loved everything we ordered!!! First time here and it was very nice and cozy atmosphere. Alot drink and food choices! I had a nice draught and the wife had a chardonnay. I had the steak frietes, NY strip with handcut fries, and what a nice size piece of beef and cooked perfectly. Fries were delightful. The wife had salmon over spinach and a fancy type of rice. She said it was very good and the salmon was a nice size and cooked perfect as well. We were stuffed so no desert. Finally tried it out after hearing about it and driving past it for few years. I have to say the food was pretty good and the place is interesting. It definitely feels like you enter into an Irish Pub in Ireland. I've never really had "real" Irish food before and so we got the fish and chips and braised short rib. the fish and chips were fried well and tasted a bit fishy for my liking. The braised short rib was a bit salty but flavor was good. The potato leek soup was pretty good. We were surprised to get front row seats to a presentation of Irish dancing by these middle school aged girls. It was restaurant week, what a great reason to head back to Auld Shebeen! I hadn't been to this restaurant for some time and I was happy to have a justification to return. Let me begin by saying that this place is truly a "classic" in all the best possible ways. It's great to have a restaurant that's been around for years and continues to serve high quality food with wonderful service! And the owners have keep the interior as welcoming and inviting as you could ask for in a pub. Since it was restaurant week we went with the fish and chips and chicken pot pie entrees which come with soup and dessert. For soup we tried the beef vegetable soup and the creamy potato soup. Both were great, although the beef vegetable soup was my favorite- great flavor. As for the entrees, both were very good. A nice size portion of beautiful fish, battered and fried just right! And the seasoned fries that accompanied the fish were very tasty and also cooked equally well. The chicken pot pie was equally delicious with a very nice flaky crust and a large amount of chicken. I enjoyed some of each entree, and while the fish and chips was the preferred entree for me, I would gladly order either entree in the future. We finished off the meal with an extremely delicious warm bread pudding topped with an unexpectedly high quality vanilla ice cream! Once again, restaurant week for Fairfax City came around. I was feeling like trying someplace new, so I took a look at participating restaurants and decided to try here with a friend. This is located in Old Town Fairfax, near the public library. There is no dedicated, but there is free public parking across the street (Old Town Plaza parking) and at the library. Note that from Monday to Friday at the Old Town Plaza parking, it is 2 hour parking in the blue lined spaces. During weekend lunch time, there was plenty of parking available. However, the restaurant was pretty busy. Luckily we were able to get seated quickly at the bar. My friend and I ended up ordering the following items from the restaurant week menu: Homemade Potato Leek Soup, Chef's Soup Of The Day (Chili), Chicken Pot Pie, Shepherd's Pie, Bread Pudding á la Mode & Sticky Toffee Pudding. Everything tasted good and was well portioned, but I would say that my favorite savory dishes were the Chef's Soup Of The Day (Chili) and Shepherd's Pie because they were more hearty and flavorful. It was definitely interesting to see how the Irish versions of Chicken Pot Pie and Shepherd's Pie were interesting and I prefer them over the usual versions available at stores. The service staff were nice and attentive. The only downside was that there was a little wait and confusion with the bill. I believe this was due to the unexpectedly large volume of guests and the changes they made in processing this year's restaurant week orders. Overall the experience (both food and service) were good as well as the ambience. I've never been to an actual Irish pub, but I imagine it would be a little bit like this place. I didn't find out until I was leaving, but the Irish traditional music playing throughout the pub/restaurant was actually played by a live band in the corner of the restaurant. They were so good that I had thought throughout the whole time I was eating that the restaurant was playing Spotify or something. I definitely recommend trying this place and I'll come back another day to try the rest of their menu! read more

I came here for dinner with my brother. It was really good! I didn't realize how many Irish pubs were in old town Fairfax until searching for a place to have dinner the other night. My brother and I were very happy with the food. I got the fish and chips and he got the Reuben. It was honestly the best fish and chips I've had to date. The only drawback is that it was a tad oily but that's to be expected with fried fish. It came with tartar sauce and Cole slaw as well as the chips (fries). My brother got the Reuben and I had a bite. It was very good! Not as good as a New York deli but still really good. The service was good here. My brother and I sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly. He asked our names and then gave us his name. He got us beers when we needed a refill and he got our food out quickly. The ambiance is an old Irish pub essentially. It feels like you're walking into a little bit of history. It was a good cozy feeling place. Definitely will have to come back again to try more of the menu. They had trivia on the Tuesday night we were in. So they do have events during the week. Note that parking can be a pain since it is downtown Fairfax. There's a big lot that is free after 6pm on weekdays. read more

I drove by many times, final able to visit this place. Our server with strong British accents. So, I don't know if that real or fake. However, it did feel in UK. The interior decor just like all other pub. It was interest to see it at this location. I ordered the shepherd pie and the portion is bigger than I expected, but it taste very good. Four of us went on a Saturday night, and luckily had reservations, as the place was very busy. Food was excellent--I'm a sucker for beef stew, and theirs was outstanding, tender beef and lots of it. Guinness, of course, and Irish coffee to finish up; they didn't skimp on the whiskey! Service was first-rate, from beginning to end. The musician, Tim, was very good, and lots of fun. Nice and fun atmosphere here! If you want Irish style foods, may the luck of Saint Patrick be with you. I've had wonderful meals here, although sentimental reasons, I will always be grateful for the Black Eyed Pea. That's probably been gone 25 years or so, but you'll find a variety of burgers, soups, and fish to make you happy. Their prices and portions are quite reasonable. As for entertainment, the music is pumping, and they have a full service bar. That's Irish! What makes a restaurant good, is that you feel welcome. This is that type of place. Whether with family, friends, or a date this is a venue to try. Located in Old Town Fairfax, parking is usually a cinch. Customer service marks are high. OMG - the fish and chips!!! GET.THE.FISH.AND.CHIPS. That was some good cod... delicate, buttery and encased in a beautifully flavored golden batter. It has been a while since I had fish and chips done so well! My husband had the Guinness BBQ burger, which was flavorful, but the bottom bun was overly toasted, like a crouton... nothing to cry about really because who cares?!? You should be ordering the fish and chips! I am so glad we tried this place though. We were driving through the area one night a few months ago, with the windows rolled down and as we were stopped at the light, I could hear lively Irish music coming from this corner establishment...I was intrigued... And it didn't disappoint. I loved the Irish pub feel, the wooden bar, the great selection of UK and local drafts on tap as well as the lively Irish music.
