I've been back to Trummer's many times since my initial brunch review and felt like I should give an update. Side-note: Idk why I always forget to check in here. The food is consistently good. This is not a quick service restaurant, it's definitely paced out like a European meal, but most of our servers since the first experience have been wonderful. Their Titanic cocktail is one of my favorites and the butcher salad and truffle fries never disappoint. Expect to take your time here, but the food is worth the wait. The service was very slow overall. We waited a very long time in between each course we were served. And the food was served lukewarm at best. The winter restaurant week deal was great and worth the price but I am not sure if we would pay full price for the food we received. The saving grace of the meal were the cocktails (pain and pleasure) and dark chocolate whisky pie. The server was also super nice and friendly and I do not fully blame him for the slow pace. The bar and lounge downstairs is a great vibe and because the cocktails are excellent, we will revisit for this experience. However, not sure about dining upstairs again. read more

My friends have been talking up this place, and I recently got a chance to try it. My friend and I came for a late weekend lunch. There was plenty of parking and a decent amount of seating. Inside was cute, clean, and bright. It was the perfect place to just chill and catch up We ended up ordering the Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Cordon Bleu Sandwich, Trummer's Signature Bratwurst Chicken, and Beignet to share. We didn't wait too long for food and the service was great - friendly and attentive. Everything tasted great, although I would definitely reorder the Cordon Bleu Sandwich next time. I love the pairing of the lingonberry (tart with some sweetness) with the savory ingredient. The Brussels sprouts were yummy, but I was looking for a little more crunch. We went to Trummer's for my adult son's birthday. We sat on the top level next to a front window. The ambience was what I would call noisy living room. We were at a rectangular table and surrounded by hard surfaces. Conversations were very directional and a challenge for my old ears. Maybe some sound deadening tiles or thick wall hangings. We had some appetizers that came out promptly after they were made. The entrees came out 30 mins later. I had the soft shell crab. It was nicely crunchy with a flavorful breading over a bed of cucumbers and peppers. Lots of flavor. Serving size was enough to feel satisfied and not stuffed. read more

Trummer's remains exquisite. Stopped by on a Tuesday for their 1/2 price Titanic drink offer. Their goulash was excellent. The veal schnitzel, perfect. My son got the strudel and it looked amazing. Came on a weekday and was able to make a reservation ahead of time. The menu is rotating! I got the spicy crab dip & Ciopinno. For the crab dip, it was surprisingly spicier than I was expecting but overall very good, paired with toasted bread. For my entree, it was excellent with flavors, quantity of seafood, and the portion. The dish came with an abundant amount of shrimp and halibut however less mussel ( which personally I was okay with). I actually had to take some home because of the size of the portion! What a perfect Sunday brunch this past weekend! We had been meaning to visit the original location, and this was such a beautiful day for it. The seating on the 2nd floor was so bright and beautiful. Loved the setting. And appreciated wait staff inviting us to view the full venue. Great ideas for private events. Our server, Amanda J., was so welcoming, helpful, knowledgeable, and attentive. She really made the visit extra special. We had shrimp and grits (never had with pea flower!), Trummers breakfast, shrimp cocktail (highly recommend!), truffle fries, and wonderful cocktails: pineapple mimosa and espresso martini. The bacon was over cooked, a bit burnt, but Amanda made sure a fresh batch replaced the bacon. Loved our meal, but also our eyes couldn't help notice all the delicious dishes passing by (wow, those waffles). Hence, the shrimp cocktail we added on. We'll be back! read more

I used to go to this restaurant when it had a highly acclaimed chef. In my most recent visit, on Valentines Day, we were presented with a Prix Fixe menu. We started with the Potato Dumpling, which was a soggy pile of mush, as it was surrounded by leeching cabbage and was sitting in a puddle of leeched juice. We also had the steak tartar which had basically no flavor, and mostly tasted like mayonnaise- the shredded and fried potato it sat on actually overpowered the tartar with a taste of grease. We ordered the Steak Au Poivre, which was actually mushrooms and no steak, almost no taste. Additionally, we had the Venison, which as a tenderloin is supposed to be tender, and it was anything but. On top of this, the serrated steak knives were dull, cheap, and clearly all scratched up. For desert, we were served a galette that was clearly microwaved to rubber and had a weird yogurt-looking sauce, the whole thing tasted like nothingness and a pile of microwave-reheated dough. On top of all of this, we were seated in an extension area by the entrance to the kitchen, where you could hear dishes and silverware crashing. The cloth chairs were stained, the placemats looked like they were from IKEA. We even told them it was our special anniversary. It was - very bad. We both have had stomach issues since. Likely by ill-prepared or badly-kept food. The meal was horrible. The only good factor was the server, who we left a nice tip, for her service, not for the food or ambiance. read more

My review for Trummer's is long overdue! We've been visiting here for about three years after originally getting lots of recommendations for a nice anniversary spot. Since our first visit, we've enjoyed many special events and excellent meals with friends and family. The service is always top-notch from the friendly host desk to the incredible waitstaff. The transformed home venue is really cute, and we always head home feeling like we've had a special experience. Although it's not currently on the menu (which rotates and features seasonal items), the whole-roasted branzino is insanely delicious. It's rare to find a local restaurant that offers a whole fish, and all that effort on the chef's part is well worthwhile. The wine list is incredible, and the wine flights are perfect to enjoy with a meal. I can't recall ordering anything that I didn't like, and they are always willing to omit items for any food allergies. Well, writing this review made me pretty hungry, so I think a reservation to Trummer's is coming very soon in my future! read more

TL;DR: Good solid dishes, cute ambiance Came here for dinner on a Wednesday night and was seated in the upstairs portion of the restaurant which was very pretty and had tons of natural lighting. Only problem was that it was FREEZING (which I assume was to combat the humidity outside). It's not abnormal for me to be cold, but my husband was extremely cold, as well, which is not normal. The service was very nice and made sure our waters were always filled. I feel like toward the end of the meal, they could have touched our table a bit more, but it wasn't anything outrageous. The timing between ordering/each course was a little longer than I'd like. FOOD: ~Bone Marrow (3/5): You get 1 hefty piece of bone marrow, and it was roasted nicely. Unfortunately, we did not like the apricot jam (tasted almost artificial) or the mint gremolata that came with it. Probably would have liked it better if they just gave a side of salt to season the bone marrow ourselves, but this is a subjective opinion ~Foie Gras (3.9/5): this version was like their play on a PB&J. It was really good and not overwhelmingly nutty or sweet. Would give higher rating, but certain bites, the flavor of the foie gras got a little lost to me, but overall tasty ~Scallops (4/5): Came with 4 scallops which were cooked okay (maybe a hair over), but seasoned really well. The mushrooms and bokchoy were very flavorful, as well. Had a few overly salty bites since the scallops were aggressively seasoned and the miso sauce on the bottom of the plate also packed a punch of sodium, although very tasty. ~Halibut (4/5): again, the halibut may have been cooked a hair too long, but nothing terrible. I fell in love with those chickpeas though. Had a curry and subtle coconut flavor to it. ~Blueberry creme brulee (4.5/5): Sugar layer was perfect ratio to the custard. You could actually taste blueberry in the custard portion. And the lemon lavender meringue was beautifully balanced. Was not fan of the biscotti though Overall, all our dishes were great! Not only was the food delicious, the service was exceptional!!! My husband and I were so delighted that Isaac was our server! Isaac was immediately friendly and engaging; he laughed at my husband's "dad" jokes, and he made us feel so happy to be at Trummer's. We will be sure to ask for Isaac again! As I said, the food was exceptional, as well. I had the kale salad, of which I ate every bite. The bread basket was amazing, so unique! *Drink Review Only* A friend and I decided to get some afternoon drinks and lunge for a bit, so Trummer's was our pick. Having been here before, for both their amazing drinks and food, I was surprised I forgot to give this one a review. The Drinks: I went with the "Titanic" and the "Pain & Pleasure" for my drinks. The Titanic is the special cocktail which has a incredible flavors that hit just right. The alcohol was mixed very well as it wasn't over bearing at all. The Pain & Pleasure would have to be my favorite though. The nice and fruity flavor with a slight kick to keep your pallet in check is just perfect. The Service: Service was great! The staff here are all so friendly and welcoming. Water refills were on point and frequent check ups were done as well. The Atmosphere: Two floors, a lively bar downstairs and a very nice and elegant upstairs dining area. The vibes are relaxed and would 100% make a good date spot. Dim lights with an open/spacious elegant dining area calls for a nice intimate night out. Overall, a 5/5! Everything about Trummer's is amazing. This was our first time visiting Trummer's and sadly it left a lot to be desired. We had a reservation just in case because it was a Saturday afternoon and we weren't sure how busy it would be. When we arrived we walked into the bar area and there was n one there except for the employees. We were seated up on the 2nd floor in a large and very, very loud dining room. There were two large parties in the middle of the room and it was so loud my husband and I could barely hear each other. There was no carpet or anything to absorb the sound. The AC was also blasting. Yes, it has been hot but goodness it was really blowing air. We waited for about 10 minutes before a server dropped off menus. She said her name but we couldn't hear her. She said she would bring water but never did. Someone else finally brought us some. We waited for another almost 10 minutes for her to come back. We could barely hear her speaking when placing our order. We both ordered a glass of wine, which I kid you not took another 10 minutes to make it to the table. We ordered cornbread to start, I had shrimp and grits and my husband got the burger. The cornbread finally came out and it was decent, albeit a bit dense. The raspberry jam was very good though. When we finally got our food our server came by once to ask how we were. I had to ask her for more water since no one was filling it, and surprisingly she never brought any. Another server came by and filled the glasses. The food was ok. The shrimp and grits was not worth the price. The portion was tiny, I mean tiny. 5 tiny shrimp, not large shrimp as one is usually accustomed to when ordering this dish. They were also overcooked. My husband said his burger was good but his side of fries was paltry. They barely filled up the cone they came in. We saw other tables get fries and their cones were over flowing. Serious quality control. We decided to forgo dessert or another drink because we didn't have another 45 minutes to wait. Overall the service was severely lacking for a restaurant of this caliber. We were seated in a back room that was very closed in. We waited over an hour for our food. And had two babies that got impatient and cried. The table next to us came after us, were served before us, and left. We were still sitting. The portions were small, not that great, and the prices High. And we were on the second floor. Not a problem until you need a bathroom which is one stall for each sex on the ground floor. And the doors appears to be locked. So you stand forever, before another guest told me to push the door open. It wasn't locked, just really heavy. What a disaster. It was a Christmas dinner with family. Went on another date night with wife while our son was at a swim team dinner. We chose this American Bistro restaurant to try as it was close by in downtown Clifton. The restaurant has a feel of an old establishment but relatively new. My wife started with the Austrian Wine Flight. We ordered the Gem Lettuce and Charred Octopus Bruschetta for our appetizers. The pomegranate vinaigrette, smoked blue cheese and lardons(bacon) combo made it really refreshing. The pistachio avocado purée was really delicious paired with the really tender octopus. For main course, we got the Porchetta with Chimichurri and the Braised Lamb Shank. The Porchetta was a bit too fatty for my wife but the potatoes were delicious. The lamb shank was very tender. I am not a bean person so did not really enjoyed the cassoulet. We decided to get the White Chocolate Orange Tart. It was one of the best dessert I have tried. We loved the orange meringue, which slightly toasted giving it a smoky flavor along with the sweetness. Overall, we really enjoyed our dinner and the service was excellent. read more

I enjoyed having lunch here with a group of friends. The setting of the village of Clifton seems like an oasis in the middle of a bustling Washington DC Metro. The building is historical with a nice winding country road approach off the main road. There's a nice welcoming bar area. The restaurant is on the top floor. Very spacious and lots of space around tables. My impression was that I had arrived at a place where the best traditions of hospitality still live. The lunch menu changes seasonally. We ordered the crab dip, which was smooth and very flavorful. The truffle fries are extremely tasty. The corn bread literally melts in your mouth. I tried the crispy shrimp po boy. It was classical. Two large pieces of shrimp flattened and fried with a tinge of spiciness that slightly tingles but doesn't overpower. A member of our group ordered the Wiener Snitzel and loved it. I'll note it for the next time as I love this dish. The menu serves well for people needing a lunch salad as well. Service was impeccable. I judge service by the way your water glass is filled without your asking for more. Service cutlery was replaced before the main course. I was expecting the menu to be very expensive and was surprised to see the prices similar to restaurants in the area. $$. There was a good selection of wines and beer. I love when you walk up and into this restaurant the aesthetic is elegant and beautifully decorated for the holidays. Staff was knowledgeable on wine and what I loved is although she didn't know the answer she went to go get the best and correct answer for us so we could pick the wine that would make us happiest. I love good size portions and for what it cost it was extremely fair. Potato salad with the schnitzel was fair. None of the side dishes to pay extra for excited me that much but it was a very cute place for date night. read more

First time at Trummers but it won't be my last. Met a friend for our mutual birthday dinner. We went on the earlier side at 6pm. The restaurant was decorated beautifully for the holiday! We were seated upstairs by the windows in a great spot with lovely views of the outside decorations as well. We ordered the cornbread and the baked Brie. Both were delicious. I'm not a fan of anything on my Brie but this was so good. For dinner I had the butcher chop salad. Very good and very filling! Easily 2 meals! Couldn't finish. My friend had the Wienerschnitzel and it was also quite good. For desert we split the scotcharoo tort and it was one of the best desserts I've had. Our server also finished off our meal with two mini cupcakes. Service was excellent, I believe our servers name was Brian. I used to love this place. From what I heard there is a new owner and a new chef. Whatever changes they made, it wasn't exactly for the better. The good: The restaurant itself is beautiful, and cosy, yet upscale. A perfect place for a date, located in the cutest historic town of Clifton. The service is terrific with the most pleasant and professional staff. There ends the good. The bad: the food is mediocre at best now, with everything my table got being a disappointment. The food is definitely not worth the price tag. The seafood dishes (rockfish and halibut) were bland, the entrée accompaniments uninspiring and equally flavorless. The table sides of Brussel sprouts and potatoes were worse than I could make at home.The potatoes were also bland, oily, and undercooked. The best thing on the table was the eggplant dish, surprisingly. If it were up to me I would never come back but my family member is just too enchanted with the charm of the place so I am sure I will end up back at Trummers. We make the trip to Trummer's on Main several times a year and did again on Saturday evening. I had something I never had before. I was planning on the cioppino, but it is no longer on the menu. Instead I had the Butcher Salad, which was a bed of largely romaine lettuce with a few cucumber pieces topped shredded chicken a what seemed to be beef sirloin (generous portions). It was lightly dressed. The beef was well done, which I thought would be a distraction but was delicious. It was my entire meal and I would have it again. My wife, Kathleen, had two appetizers-- the spinach salad and the shrimp and grits -- both exquisite. There is a reason this is our favorite restaurant in the region. My only complaint is that the sound level is loud and conversation at the table is difficult at times. read more

We went for a private birthday party, held in the private wine room. The room was almost too small for our party of 15. We had a special menu, picked out by the birthday girl. We had an appetizer of pigs in a blanket...seriously. Strait up non seasoned cocktail weiners in busicuit dough...some were burnt. The frst course was a chestnut soup. This was basically a cream soup with bits of bacon and onions on top. No chestnut flavor at all. Not even a chestnut shaving as garnish. If the bacon and onions were not there, this would have been a bland room temperature cream. Of the 3 entry choices, I got the braised short ribs with spaetzel and Butternut Squash. Short ribs were horribly overcooked, dry, and not seasoned at all. The spaetzel had a cheese sauce (?), I think, and was so salty I couldn't eat them. The Butternut Squash was just a sliver, and was only warmed up so it was really hard. We had our own birthday cake for dessert. But, our table decided to order a house dessert to try. We got the Jamaican bread pudding. It was just ok. Overall I wouldn't say I was really that impressed with the food. It reminded me of the food served on Amtrack or on a Carnival cruise. read more

I booked my 6 pm reservation on OpenTable. This time we were seated at a very nice large table in the main dining room, which I prefer. I love their main dining room rather than their upstairs dining room. I started with and enjoyed my Pain & Pleasure cocktail with tequila, curacao, hibiscus, lime and Jalapeno for $16. We came here today for lunch, never really been to this little town before so we selected one of the only two restaurants that we saw in the area. The ambiance was nice and the food was good! I think we should have done more research coming here though because for a pub it was a little more fancy than my liking with 3 kids. There weren't a ton of options for kids to eat, and it was a bit pricey. The smash burger was really good and the salad side was flavorful, the pork schnitzel was a little dry and the potato salad on the side had nice thick chunks of potato but not a ton of flavor. We also ordered the scallops and they were amazing, but it was very expensive for what came on the plate. Our waiter who was at the bar and waiting our table was very friendly and accommodating for us especially since we had 3 kids with us, but I would skip this spot if you have kids. read more

Trummer's may be the best value in fine dining in the region. Stefan and Victoria and their marvelous staff from the chef through the servers and are truly care about making your visit wonderful. The menu is generally Austrian and European. The care taken with the menu selection, preparation and presentation is on a par with the best restaurants in the region, but without the high prices. My wife and I make it a point to dine at Trummer's several times a year. Our most recent visit was on February 1, 2025. We dined from the Restaurant Week menu. I'm a foodie and despite my decades of fine dining, I had never had a chestnut soup. The chestnut soup was spectacular. The creamy smoothness, the nutty flavor, and the spicing made it unlike anything I have ever eaten. I thought it was so delicious I thought it could have been a dessert as well as an appetizer. I had the venison braten dish and was initially concerned that because venison is so lean the traditional preparation could dry out the meat. However, the venison was prepared using sous vide and was absolutely perfect. Venison is a house specialty and usually on the menu in some form. The personal attention by our server Jo Jo and Stefan made us feel almost like family. We were looking forward to a date night at Trummer's -- instead, we left frustrated, hungry, and $600 lighter. What unfolded was a complete breakdown of basic service standards from start to finish, with no accountability, no urgency, and certainly no hospitality. We arrived at 6PM and ordered cocktails, appetizers, and a bottle of red wine to pair with dinner. The wine was brought out before the cocktails -- and it was the wrong vintage. The cocktails finally arrived, and we waited. And waited. We had long since finished our drinks before the appetizer showed up, nearly an hour later. When it came time to receive our entrées, we were informed -- only then -- that the daily special that had been ordered was no longer available. This was after almost another hour of sitting there. It then took another 30 minutes to get our entrées, and they forgot my glass of white wine entirely. By the time the food arrived, my blood sugar had crashed from the excessive delay and I couldn't even eat. We had the food boxed up and left. So after spending $600 at a "fine dining" establishment, we couldn't even enjoy the meal. We were told a manager would stop by the table. He never came by. After my partner got me settled in the car he went back in to speak directly the the manager, who was chit chatting at the bar -- and his response? No apology, no resolution. Just a flat "what happened was unacceptable," followed by nothing. A follow-up email was sent the next day. Still no response. A phone call was made and my partner spoke to the hostess, who took his info. Almost a week later, and still no response. If you're charging luxury prices, then provide a luxury experience. Or at the very least -- get the order right, communicate when things go wrong, and take care of your guests. We will not be returning -- and we'll be making sure others know what to expect: a waste of time, money, and an evening we'll never get back. read more

I tried this place with some out of town family the other night, as we had read the reviews and liked brunch there pre-pandemic. There was great ambiance and service, but, in our opinion, the food was meh to bad (and quite expensive). A bad combination. The cornbread with pear butter was great, and that was about all I have good to say about the food. I tried almost everything else on the table and really didn't think anything was worth the cost. My youngest daughter had the kids pasta, which was supposed to be cavatelli, but seemed much more like a gnocchi, and wouldn't eat it because of the consistency. She also didn't like the kids dessert - ice cream - which she normally loves. I started with the mussel soup, which was very underseasoned (a theme, if would turn out), and generally flat - also, served at just a a smidge over room temperature - It was probably one of the worst soups I've had this year (including at occasional trips to Panera). For my main, I had the prime rib and duck-fat potatoes and was very disappointed with both. They again were both very underseasoned and lacking in flavor. The meat was also very difficult to cut even after I asked for a steak knife. Again, probably the worst prime rib I've ever had. My brother had the same, and he agreed. My youngest, this being her first experience with prime rib, thought it was ok (after I added salt). My wife had a salad and squash tart, and she thought both were fine, but nothing special. My older daughter probably liked her food the best - venison loin. I tried it, and it too was underseasoned, but better than the other dishes on the table. I brought my Mom along, and she had a three course meal. The potatoes and lardons and spaetzel side were good. The venison schnitzel was very gritty and didn't taste very good to me. The strawberry streusel dessert was also light on flavor and soggy. The family shared a coffee creme brulee, and that was probably the best dessert, but really that isn't saying much. We had really enjoyed the brunch at Trummer's a lot pre-pandemic, so may someday return for that, but maybe not given this experience. read more

I hate, hate, hate to do this.... Trummers used to be one of our "go to" restaurants for guests. I've dined there numerous times over the years, as a couple, with family, corporate functions, and all have been exquisite. We stopped in for lunch the other day with family. This was our experience: Cons: Food was just "okay". Two of us had the Cobb salad which was decent, but nothing I couldn't have made at home. My husband had the short rib sandwich which while good was served on a typical, plain/white hamburger bun that comes in packs of 6 or 8 at your local grocery store. The truffle/parmesan fries neither tasted of truffle nor parmesan. Of the ~6 beers offered on the menu, they were out of 2 of them. My sister and I had almost finished our cocktails by the time my husband finally got his first beer (not the waitress's fault). Pros: The Peacemaker salad included fried oysters that were absolutely delicious. The venue is lovely - our guests loved the brightly lit dining room and the restaurant's super cute downtown Clifton location is a great respite from touring the national landmarks in DC. Our waitress, the hostess, and the bartender were all absolutely lovely - so friendly, attentive, and accommodating. They brought out four very tasty cupcake type desserts for my sister's birthday which was a lovely touch. From what I've read the restaurant is under new management and has a new chef. Maybe they're simply experiencing growing pains. Unfortunately the experience lacked that wow factor we are used to from Trummers. I really hope they are able to get the menu and availability issues sorted out. read more

My female friend and I decided to check out this local favorite spot during this holiday season on a weekday. The ambiance was celebratory and warm. We enjoyed our drink and were greeted at our table by a very thoughtful and friendly server who made wonderful recommendations. We decided to share a salad and three appetizers, that were all diverse for the palate. The mixed green salad was large enough to share and we thought the BBQ bone marrow paired better with the crostini from the Baked Brie appetizer... so far, so good... We ordered the Rack of Lamb, which we ordered medium rare as suggested, but it came VERY rare... We requested that it be taken back for further cooking, but unfortunately, it came back still too rare, and with not much flavor profile. We finished with a wonderful trio of sorbet and ice cream. The staff and management were friendly, the ambience was fantastic, and food was fantastic, except for the entree we ordered....Hence the 3 -star rating. I would go back, but probably will not order the lamb chops again. read more
