The sushi at this location is one of the best in NOVA! My friend and I go about once a month and try tons of items on the specials and the fish is fresh and the taste is beyond amazing. Great show, food was excellent quality and friendly staff. No problems if you get there early getting a table. Our family of 5 got to enjoy an entire table to ourselves and my kids loved it. Their Mai Tai's were mixed well and can't say enough about the quality of their food. The pricing here in incredibly lower like $7/per plate compared to Otani for almost every dish. The mushrooms & onion soup has good flavor doesn't take like beef broth with onions and mushrooms like other places. The salad is probably the best ginger salad I've ever enjoyed. This used to be my favorite restaurant but after my recent experience with one of their new hibachi chefs Tony my family and I won't be back. I found it very shocking that he would be cursing, making jokes about oral sex and racists tropes all in front of a table of 4 and 5 year olds. When I asked the front receptionist for the manager she said there wasn't one on duty. This Tony guy recently transferred from a Sakura in Maryland I guess they have spicier jokes over there. I've ordered here several times, and most often, the sushi is pretty good. I usually ask for no gari, as I have a pretty strong ginger allergy. Today I was ordering for two, so I asked for it in a separate container. Instead, every container arrived with gari all over, so I guess I get to watch others eat my dinner. I did not give the restaurant a chance to correct the issue as the time it would have taken to redo would have interfered with other plans, so I don't know how they would have handled it. But, if I cannot trust them to satisfy an allergy request, I cannot reorder from them. read more

My daughter is a first timer and the grandparents wanted to treat her to hibachi. We had 6:00 reservations on a Friday and only a couple of other tables were filled when we sat down. Filled in well by the time we were leaving. Same old soup and salad, afterthoughts. I ordered the shrimp and scallops with fried rice. The food was tasty and cooked to my liking. The show was entertaining and our chef pulled some pretty good gags on us. I think by now we all know what to expect when we go to Sakura. read more

Been coming here since my late teens and its done me no wrong. I've never had to wait too long and the food quality has not changed. I usually get filet mignon but my most recent visits were huge sushi feasts. And their dessert, O-M-G, their wafer ice cream sandwich looking treats (sorry I don't know exact name but I posted up a picture of it) IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO INCREDIBLY YUMMY. This place never dissappoints, it's a great place for big groups or even just a fun dinner for two. It's about $20+ for an entree but it comes with your choice of a small appetizer, ginger salad, miso soup and the entree. I usually get the filet mignon and chicken combo, which comes out tasting delicious especially with the yum yum sauce and extra teriyaki sauce (I always ask extra for a dip). I've also been lucky enough to get fun, exciting and great chefs each time I've came here so definitely no complaints there. Of course it all depends on your chef so just hope your chef knows what they are doing. Never had a problem with service either, they ate attentive and friendly everytime. Oh and their pina colada is something you'll have to try!! Dinner and a show for the win! Also, remember that everyone in your group has to be there in order to be seated. It was a bit difficult to know by the name of the sushi roll what the ingredients were for example "Salmon Skin" roll. We had the server coming back more than five times because we had questions. I've been coming to Sakura since high school and they are consistently good! I love that they offer two sides, one strictly sushi, one hibachi with the option to order from their sushi side. I've never been a huge fan of sushi but can say their tempura and edamame are tasty. I love that you can come here lunch or dinner and still get quality and huge portions. Each hibachi entree comes with a small appetizer of choice (couple pieces of shrimp, chicken liver, or mushrooms I believe), salad, soup, your entree choice, veggies, rice AND noodles. Talk about a come up. I mean seriously. I typically opt for the steak/shrimp combo and this is the one place I don't finish it all. I do miss the porcelain buddha cups you used to be able to order speciality drinks in and take home. This was years ago but I specially planned my 21st here for said cup and was let down :( The price range is what's to be expected for what you receive. This rating is not about food or atmosphere- it is about customer service. The chef we had (Tony) made us all feel uncomfortable with his sexual commentary. He told my friend to "open her mouth for his meat" when he was plating her steak. He also made comments about "how women always come back for more" and when I ordered my steak rare he acted crazy asking if "I liked it raw?" These are just a few examples. We confronted the management right away but the manager did not seem worried at all. In fact only when my HUSBAND spoke, did he actually offer anything. We didn't care about paying for our meal, we cared that they employed someone who felt so entitled that they could openly harass women in public. Terrible place with terrible standards. Came here as a big group of 20 for a friend's birthday (with a reservation) and they were able to accommodate us. Each table only seats 10 but we were able to be across from each other. The hibachi show is typical to most other similar restaurants. The portions are a lot for one person though that most of us had to take leftovers home. I would suggest sharing an entree between two people if you can.... unless you want lunch for the next day which is fine too! Sakura is a fun Japanese steak house that is better than the other Japanese steak house in the area. This location gets really crowded on weekends and there can be a wait. The hibachi side is good, and the food is good. But there is also a sushi side...and the sushi side...is a nightmare. I went here for nigiri sushi & sashimi and didn't think it was very good, then returned a 2nd time to give them a shot and it was worse...with fish that was just poor quality or poorly prepped. I've eaten at like every sushi place, and this one is one I never forget and not in a good way. I will never sit on sushi side again. I've seen other reviews praise the sushi, so maybe there has been a change and they've improved, or maybe it is just hit or miss. I'm not going to risk another miss. My sushi visits were both in 2016. My rating is a 3 because I view the sushi side as a "bonus". If it was sushi only I'd give it 1 star. I have to rate this place based on the hibachi side. So for a Japanese hibachi this place does a good job, but if you want sushi, there are a lot of other options. read more

Went for a friends birthday party and was a little disappointed. Overall, the food was okay, seemed a little under seasoned compared to normal but meat was cooked perfectly. The waiters tended to be rude and short with us. We received several dirty looks from the wait staff due to overstaying our welcome, even though there were many empty tables and no wait. The person who cooked our food may have been newer because he messed up a few times and splashed my friend with oil. We informed the wait staff that it was my friends birthday and no one did anything special, we were anticipating them singing and bringing her a dessert but guess not. I went to this location for my birthday this past year with my family and was extremely displeased. This location should shut down, this is not a traditional hibachi restaurant. The server was too busy to handle our table and the chef ruined the meal by pouring half a bottle of MAYO based yum-yum sauce all over the fried rice. Traditionally they used soy sauce and a variety of seasoning on their fried rice to perfect this but years ago this was the way they did this, ONLY ORDER HIBACHI IF YOU LIKE MAYO DOUSED RICE. The chicken was subpar and lacked any hibachi char and my girlfriend was also unimpressed. My brother also started laughing immediately when they poured YUM YUM sauce over the rice and cooked it on the hot top. Had reservations at this place and when I arrived I saw the following: Signs everywhere about wearing masks and 6ft social distancing and this place was packed to the eyeballs and overcrowded all the way to the entrance. Even in nice, diverse Fairfax, racial and gender insensitivity still exists. Labor Day, I expected to have a great experience at the Sakura restaurant in Fair Lakes. It was not what I was expecting. First, our party of 6 had to move seats due to an overhead roof leak from "air unit condensation" that dripped down on our seats. Second, our young (white) waitress was indifferent to us at best and didn't seem too thrilled to serve us. We were seated with a pleasant white couple with a young child. The couple also had to change seats, but the water didn't drip on them. However, the (Asian) restaurant manager felt compelled to apologize to the white gentleman in front of me and didn't acknowledge our inconvenience at all. Lastly, the (Asian) table cook was much more friendly, but he couldn't seem to refrain from using black urban slang and making multiple jokes with sexual innuendo aimed at the women at the table. The couple blushed in embarrassment as he told jokes inappropriate for a 2nd grader's ears and one directed at my daughter, while slinging shrimp at her, was one too many. I politely asked him to tamp down on the jokes considering the presence of the 2nd grader. I shouldn't have to tell a middle-aged man how he should speak to female patrons ranging in age from 10-70. He had comedic skills but they belong on cable TV, not at a family restaurant. I chose not to name him or any other workers because I observed other workers doing their jobs well. I realize the restaurant business is not easy and everyone doesn't hide their feelings well when they'd rather be someplace else (I imagine the waitress would rather have been at the beach). I still gave them an 18% gratuity and would hope that my experience was an exception to the norm. However, no patrons of any race, gender, background, etc., should have to think twice about being welcomed with hospitality and good service in a reputable restaurant. This is our go-to place for fresh sushi and generous portions. Ming, the head sushi chef, was recruited by the owner from Sushi-Ko. You can tell he knows what he is doing, and he makes it a priority to order the freshest fish. My favorites are the Tuna Cilantro Jalapeno roll and the Lump Crab California Roll. As for the teppanyaki tables, I think your food is going to be as good as the chef you get that night. My brother used to be a teppanyaki chef, so I have eaten more than my fair share of teppanyaki meals. The quality of your meal based on how it is seasoned and how the food is cooked can vary greatly. That being said, I find Sakura's food superior to local competitors by a great margin - love their dipping sauces and their ginger salad dressing is the BEST! read more

My favorite hand rolls here are the Philadelphia and the Spicy Scallop. Both the salmon and scallop were very fresh and for $6/roll, definitely worth it. The only reason they don't get a 5 star is because of the service. We came late in the evening (8PM) so it wasn't every busy, yet our waitress was not as attentive as I hoped. My friend and I visited Sakura for sushi so this review pertains to that specifically. We visited around 6:30 on a Saturday evening and the hibachi section was packed. To start off we ordered two miso soups (typically at other sushi restaurants a miso soup and salad is complimentary when you order over a certain amount of money on sushi). Since we were both hungry my friend wanted to get rolls because they are more filling. We got the following rolls: California, yellowtail, salmon, bamboo, and the rainbow. Without any high expectations I also ordered one order of the scallop nigiri. The sushi came out quickly- the quality of the fish was a hit or miss, standard of a sushi restaurant of this caliber. A couple of flaws I noticed was the rice was too wet, they pack too much rice into each of the rolls, and they are very heavy handed with the imitation crab meat. As I referred to the quality of the fish was hit or miss. I will focus on my experience with the yellowtail.I had a piece where it was edible and other pieces where it was very chewy and almost tasted like rubber. After the experience with the yellowtail I was afraid to try out the scallop nigiri. When it came time to try out the scallop, I cautiously took a bite and noticed it was void of any scallop flavor. It tasted like a piece of slimy rubber. The excessive use of imitation crab meat drowns out the flavor of the fish, which was missing anyways. This meal came up to $65 which is not too expensive for a sushi dinner but for the quality of fish you get I felt jibbed. If you enjoy imitation crab meat then this place might be right for you. Overall, if you want to enjoy decent sushi then look elsewhere. Perhaps they are better with the hibachi but I left feeling dissatisfied. I guess the lack of patrons in the sushi section should have been a sign to me to avoid their sushi. read more
