Note: my review is strictly for the sushi. I have not yet tried their hibachi. I am a regular sushi-eater. When trying a new place, I always start off with their salmon. If they can't get the salmon right, it's pretty much not even worth trying their other fresh sushi. Sorry, Sakura, you didn't pass. I ordered first the standard Miso soup (which was quite bland), and the standard house salad with ginger dressing. The salad was very fresh, which is always a plus. Nothing worse than starting a meal with brown lettuce. In that regard, Sakura did well. The ginger dressing wasn't as sweet as I like it, but it, too, was plenty fresh. Next came the sushi. I ordered both Salmon Nigiri and a standard Philadelphia roll (fresh salmon, avocado, cream cheese). The salmon was just poor quality. I couldn't even bite through it, and what I did manage to get in my mouth was too chewy and virtually inedible. Thinking perhaps it was just a lousy piece, I did keep trying, but it was the same for all the sushi. Roll or Nigiri made no difference. There is always the possibility that it was just a bad night. Let me just start by saying I will go back. Which I think is the most important question one should ponder when writing a review. I mean if you are telling me about a place and I ask if you will go again and you say yes, I have all I need to know right there. If I could only ask you one question about your dining experience that would be it. But you want to know more, right? Of course you do. So we actually went to Sakura because I needed a new Japanese steakhouse. I live near Kochi Steak & Seafood in South Riding, but it wasn't doing it for me anymore in more ways than one. So I did some surfing and found this place. Its menu looked awesome and it was under 20 minutes away so we headed out. Let me just say it was a pain to find via my Blackberry's Google Maps app (it kept saying it was in the middle of the road.. not in a shopping center) but we got there. It was packed even for a Saturday, which immediately made me feel awesome because a packed restaurant is in most cases a great sign. We were seated quickly and then the usual egg spinning, flame starting, volcano making shebang began. And that was as good as any Benihana show. But the food beat Benny's by far. I am a seafood lover with expensive taste (plus my dad was buying) so I ordered the Filet Mignon, Lobster, and Scallops Combo. Jeeze I have never had more food in my life. With the standard soup, salad, shrimp toss, veggies, and fried rice, plus my trio of entrees, I was more than stuffed at the end. But let me tell you the flavors present were amazing. The scallops were cooked to perfection (an issue I usually have with these establishments because I always get the scallops and they always suck) as was the lobster (to die for) and the Filet (meat is always good when it is cooked medium rare properly :) ) and I was more than satisfied with my experience. Actually I was freaking out at the end because I was so thrilled to have another restaurant in my hometown that I truly consider to be fine dining. Few more notes: Boyfriend got the Filet, loved it as well. All though we noticed his portion was some how smaller than mine even though mine was only 1/3 of my meal. Dad got the chicken and found the glazed amazing. He also loved the ginger sauce (I hate in general) and my boyfriend and I loved the seafood/"yummy" sauce. I love a good "yummy" sauce and that was the kicker in deciding on a 5 star rating, and also the reason I will never like Benihana's (What is that second sauce they serve you anyways? Sakura is a chain, and one that I typically see in malls. I didn't expect much from it, and CPIK and I often order take out sushi because of convenience...but you know what? Sakura is actually really good. The sushi is good, the fish tastes fresh, and it's about mid-range, sliding to cheap for maki rolls/special rolls. Nigiri on the other hand is kind of expensive. It's nicely decorated with a good ambience. Service was nice and attentive. I'd definitely recommend this place if you're in the area and looking to have a chill date night. read more

My family likes their food, although one table chef can cook / season much differently than another. My complaint is about quality control. About a year ago I found a fingernail in my salad. Last week I found shards of steel wool in my soup. Since we go to Sakura about 4 times a year, I would say that would be less of a coincidence and more of a trend. Sorry. Personally, I wish you could get the same fresh cooked food without the table cooking show at a private table. Great huge slices of fish on the sushi, and a massive cup of green tea. I now understand why foreigners joke about American-size portions. We only had two types of rolls and two types of sushi, but they were excellent! The only complaint (minor) is that half the edamame were over-salted and the other half under-salted. I'm not one to leave reviews and I usually LOVE Sakura. I would go any time I had the chance. However, the last two times I've eaten there the food has been burnt. To the point where the rice is hard to eat because of a strong burnt taste. Things like this don't bother me most of the time because I never seem to mind a bit of char on my food. But this was too blaring of a taste. Drowned it with yum yum sauce and could still taste it. Very sad and unfortunate but I will not be coming back :( read more

Some of the drinks come in a little take-home container, a Buddha or a Geisha girl I think. Very cute. And the drinks are tastey, too. I don't drink alcohol with dinner so I'll agree that plenty of times my pepsi has gone dry before the waitress brought me another, but there's also a lot going on so I cut them some slack. The service is always friendly. I gave this place a "moderate pricing" vote because I always get the chicken, so for me it's only about $25. Sakura for lunch was in heavy restaurant rotation for quite a while and I'm thinking about putting it back in! I actually really love this place for its cheesy hibachi and enormous amounts of food. The sushi is okay, but I would never really come here just for the sushi anyway. The lunch deals are awesome! Dinner can seem a little pricey after you have gotten used to the lunch prices. I always get the chicken and the filet. They cook that steak absolutely perfectly every time, which just amazes me considering the circumstance. I love the salad dressing (standard ginger and seasame) and the yum yum sauce. The service is pretty good and the restaurant itself is rather pretty. Only drawback is that it can get pretty warm in there during the evening when they have so many grills fired up. read more

This is a local restaurant so I decided to stop by for lunch on a Sunday. I didn't want to sit by the Hibachi grill itself, so I asked if I can sit in the other area. Apparently, you are unable to sit in the other area unless you order sushi. Strange rule! The sushi is actually pretty good. The Soft Shell crab is great. The tuna is pretty good. I ordered fried rice & it was terrible...bland absolutely no flavor! Service - one of the worst & rudest waitresses I've ever had. She took 15 minutes just to take our order. A table that arrived after we did had their order taken & food served before we did. And there were only two tables taken in the entire area! The waitress NEVER bothered to refill my drink & even forgot to place my order of fried rice. I had to walk up to her & ask for the check. Had reservations for Valentines at 8:00pm. Arrived a little early just to get a feel for how long we might have to wait. At exactly 8:00pm, our table was ready, and we were seated. That alone is impressive, considering the volume of customers that were there. The waitress was prompt, and brought us our soup and salad promptly. Our chief was personable and very polite. He cooked all of the seafood and steak well. He might want to have used a little oil in between cooking the fried rice and the steaks, but there were just slightly sticking... no big deal :). I like this place a lot, I just think the waitress I had was a bit of a novice when it comes to proper mannerisms. We arrived 2 hours before closing but still were the only ones here, and she kept rushing and pushing for the check. I hinted by asking when the kitchen closes (I knew) then smiled when I was told 2 hours from now & I replied "We still have time." After I said that, she cane back and said "are you gonna order more food or something"? How would I know? I have become a regular here for their sushi! The service is always excellent; the waitress I always get is very kind and regularly checks in to make sure I am satisfied. I have tried many different rolls from the menu, and the classics and special rolls have all been delicious. The seaweed salad portion is generous, and I love having a bowl of miso soup at the start of my meal. A recent pleasant detail is that they changed their teacups to a kind with a thicker wall which makes it easier to hold while your beverage is still hot :-) will continue to come back! I like their soup and salad that comes along with it. The fried rice is usually overdosed with too much soy sauce, but I like how they give you a big portion of veggies. My boyfriend got filet mignon but they overcooked it--I recommend ordering it on the rare side because there's so much heat on the hibachi! Be prepared for a big bill.
