This place is really 3 - 3.5 stars but bumping up to 4 stars because this was the only place that was open on Thanksgiving. Nothing is open in Tybee Island, not even the convenient stores. We decided to take a family trip and arrive on Thanksgiving, only to see that nothing is open. I even called several restaurants in Savannah, many were closed, even fast food. Luckily, I found Sakura Buffet. It was 30 mins from Tybee but that's okay since living in Atlanta, we travel around that same distance anyways to get places. Buffet overall was standard with mostly the same dishes you see at every Asian buffet. This one did have fried oysters! There is a hibachi and sushi area as well. There were LOTS of sushi. Honestly, some of the best sushi I've ever had and I'm not a sushi fan! During Thanksgiving, it was packed and busy but not crowded. It only cost $10.99. On top of that, all the staff was on top of their game. They were very attentive, always refilling drinks, picking up plates, they never rushed us out either. We came here on a whim after looking up reviews (NOT on yelp) since we had a large party and we thought a buffet was the perfect place for everyone to find something they liked. WRONG decision! The food was not good, the selection looked to be a fantastic one, to bad it didn't taste good. If something is known to be salty be prepared for it to taste like they poured a bucket of salt in it. The sushi selection looks great but unless you're into food poisoning I wouldn't eat it. The sushi was slimy and room temperature and honestly disgusting enough for me to chew it up and spit it out. If you like well known chicken dishes do NOT expect to find them here ( no orange chicken, no honey chicken, etc.) the dessert donuts were hard enough to break a window and you can forget about getting a refill on your drink unless you're about to walk out the door. So what started as an excellent dining experience deteriorated into a sour one. My relatives took me to Sakura's and I was totally impressed by the variety of food items and how well they were prepared and tasted. The food was absolutely fresh and delicious! While chatting, we noticed that there were only a few diners left and asked the wait person at what time the restaurant closed. She replied 9:30 and it was about 9:45 but we figured we had a few more minutes since, again, there were some diners still eating. Then an individual - I'm told who worked in the kitchen - came to our table and rudely told us to leave since the restaurant closed at 9:30. I felt there was a more customer-focused way to tell us that! How about just saying, "we're closing now"? His bad attitude was a big turnoff. We told the manager on the way out what happened and he did apologize. But if a kitchen employee felt empowered to act ugly and nasty to customers, I assume that this is a usual occurrence. This is a great place to eat if you are staying for a few days in Savannah and are not staying in the downtown area. There are several rows of good Chinese food hot eating options (including rice and fried rice, pot stickers, snow crabs etc.). Bizarre. The Hibachi (which is heavily promoted in advertising) only has vegetables, eggs, and fake seafood. Truly weird. Why even have it? It looks like they must offer protein on the Hibachi during the day but then block it off from you at night (which is when I was dining). Too strange. Why have crab on the hot buffet and not allow your guests to make a simple chicken and brocolli stir fry at the Hibachi? I thought that it was nice that when you first walk in the front door you see a version of a cherry blossom (sakura) tree where all of the flowers are individually lit. The buffet itself is enormous and has a wide variety of different types of food. Even if someone is a picky theater they could definitely find something to eat here. There are the standards that you would expect at a buffet such as sweet and sour chicken of course. They have seafood, sushi, as well as a hibachi grill in the back. Some of the items on the buffet are head scratchers, such as the plantains that I saw. The desserts are..strange. The two cakes that really stood out to me (not necessarily in a good way) had such bright pink and orange frosting that they almost looked radioactive. I tried both cakes and I wasn't crazy about either of them. While the food here wasn't bad, it definitely wasn't anything I would get excited over either. Saw some good reviews and was across from my hotel so I had to go try it. It has a huge variety of food and super fresh. Inside is very new/clean. I enjoyed the cook to eat hibachi grille and the small clams were really big and juicy. Huge variery of sushi. And dinner price on the weekdays was only $9.99. Great price for the quality of good.
