I wasn't too thrilled with the sushi, it definitely didn't taste fresh just ordinary. The salmon was not tender almost on the rubbery side. Honestly I was just praying I didn't get a stomach ache after the meal. (Thank god I was good by the end of the night). We only tried the sushi menu to give a benefit of the doubt because they had other meal options but we were in the mood for sushi. The server was attentive and cordial and there was plenty of seating available. The song vibe was in the 70's and we were going wasayyy back. I ordered takeout from Kanpai 2 bcuz it was close to my hotel & I was starving & didn't want fast food. The waiter greeted me upon arrival & I told him I wanted to place a to go order. He was polite & my order came out fast. I ordered the chicken & shrimp combo with mushroom soup & salad. Was it worth $16? Not really, but I was hungry & tired. The shrimp tasted fresh & was cooked perfectly. The dish had more cabbage than any other veggie, even though it was supposed to be mixed veggies. The chicken was not bad but it was kind of dry. There was really no flavor to the dish, even though it was supposed to be teriyaki. The teriyaki tasted watered down. Thank goodness for the yum yum sauce! The mushroom soup was great! It's a polite "NO" for me, everyone was so nice and polite at this place, but the food was terrible, I ordered from the lunch menu, the shrimp & Chicken combination entree and the chicken was absolutely terrible, clearly it had spoiled and was still cooked and drenched in teriyaki sauce. It smelled funny and tasted funny so I put it down after the first bite, however, I was so hungry I ended up eating the steamed rice and veggies but I was not happy about any of it. While checking out, I was asked how my visit was and I told her about my issue with the chicken and received a really fast " I'm sorry" -lol and continues checking me out...Being that they are serving spoil chicken, I would hate to even think about trying the sushi. I love eating here every Friday afternoon as a little treat to myself to end the work week. I have never had a bad experience here. It's clean and spotless 100% of the time. The food is delicious, very well portioned, and quickly made. The employees are attentive, prompt, polite, and treat you well. I ALWAYS tip well and am always treated well. I've read the somewhat negative reviews here, and I can't honestly believe they are telling the truth about their experience. Probably really difficult customers. Don't listen to them. This place is so great. A real little gem tucked away at a tiny strip of businesses near all the car dealers off Chatham Parkway. So, the sushi was alright--I had a Japanese bagel roll and another roll which had salmon in it too--the under power roll I think. The shumai however tasted as if it had been frozen and steamed--tasted exactly like stale frozen shumai from the frozen foods section of the Asian grocery. Just like some I've bought and microwaved at home, and I don't expect an actual Japanese restaurant to be serving things I can buy off the grocer's shelves, you know? Pretty disappointed there. The waiter also was far from the best: he was answering phones and preparing salads a good seven minutes or so instead of coming back to get my order. I feel like yes, the phone needs to be answered, but customers already seated in the restaurant ought to have priority. I'd closed my menu and was ready to order, I should not be left waiting to do so. All in all, a varied and diverse sushi menu and the apparent ability to make good, fresh, sushi rolls however the waiter and the poor shumai mean I probably wouldn't come back. I came here as a recommendation by a few people. I ordered their Ramen and was not impressed by this dish. The soup was very salty, I was tempted to pour water to alleviate some of the salty taste. I have never been disappointed when coming to this restaurant. Customer service is wonderful. Everything I have ordered here has always been scrumptious. I am not a big sushi fan. I will eat California rolls and that is it. My California roll was good and relatively inexpensive. Teriyaki chicken and tofu choices are consistently delicious. I enjoyed their fried rice. Went here with a group of guys from work. We frequent this location probably once, maybe twice a week. Over the last 8 years, we have literally spent thousands of dollars at this location. At this point, our service from Taylor is a running joke. She has zero personality or personal skills and has a hard time not frowning. She is consistently inattentive to her tables and never follows up for refills or to see if everything is okay. Today, We all ordered and everyone's food came out but mine. After about 5 minutes, I realized it wouldn't be coming and tried to make eye contact and raise my hand to get her attention to no avail. After ten minutes, everyone at the table was pretty much done eating so I figured, oh well. When she brought the checks, I asked that she remove my meal from my check because my plate never came - she rudely asked if I wanted it to go and when I replied no, she said "sorry" in a very unbelievable tone. As she passed out everyone's check - it didn't even look like she had one for me. When the checks were brought back after payment made, a different server brought them to us and Taylor was never seen again. As I said earlier, the service from this waitress has become a running joke between our department. The food is decent, for the most part, but the customer service is severely lacking. Just tried Kanpai 2 for the first time today and this place is pretty legit! I'm an avid sushi eater and live in Atlanta but travel to Savannah for work regularly and have a new spot. I ordered a lunch special sashimi bowl on rice (chariachi...sp?) and it blew me away. Very simple but excellent quality of fish (12 total pieces with 3 each of salmon tuna snapper and yellow) and medium-large cuts. For $15.00 it's hard to beat. Rice had very good flavor as well. Don't go for the ambiance and service was a little off (I finished my sushi before I got my soup and salad) but the sashimi was very very good quality, as good as anything you'll get at a high end sushi house, probably actually better than most. Give it a shot if your considering it. Would have gotten 5 stars if service had been on point. read more

Well, what can I say? I am not a hard person to please, but I had expected a little more from this place. I usually go to the location on Johnny Mercer Blvd. I ordered two steak/ shrimp combos and two drinks priced at a little over $30.00. First, the server didn't ask how I wanted my steak cooked and I didn't realize it until we received our food and left that it was cooked medium well.At other places they always ask(maybe this was a dead giveaway that it was precooked before we even ordered). In fact, both the shrimp and steak appeared to have been cooked ahead of our ordering. The vegetables were overcooked. The side salad looked like someone grabbed a handful of lettuce and placed it in the to go container. The ginger dressing was a day old - trust me it may seem ridiculous, but fresh ginger dressing makes a whole lot difference. And before we left, I had to ask for teriyaki sauce for my steak. I have not had to ask for this at the location on Johnny Mercer Blvd - they always had it in my bag, whether I asked or not. Then, I was handed only one teriyaki. I asked if I could have another. Even after asking for another teriyaki sauce, the lady asked me "how many." Geez, you would think that after spending $30.00 you wouldn't have to ask for sauce to go. I wasn't looking for royal treatment, but at least act like you care. The people that worked there were okay. Just not as nice as the other Kanpai location and Hirano's. I have never been to a Japanese restaurant that I didn't like, but this time, I will say that this has been my first experience of being disappointed. They are kind of nonchalant in there. They don't go out of their way for you. They do just enough - and that's it. I have worked as a server before and it isn't an easy job dealing with the public. But, those servers could use a good lesson in hospitality. The other Kanpai and Hirano's are more accommodating. I will say, that I will never come back. I wish that I hadn't tipped them at all. I didn't enjoy most of my food at all.The sweet tea and mushroom soup were okay. Who ever reads this, I hope that your experience is better than mine was. read more
