We just love this place! We come here to eat or order to-go at least twice a month. We live about 25 Minutes away but we don mind the drive because we love it here. We usually order their fresh spring rolls, fried spring rolls, the pork chop over rice, salmon over rice and our favorit Pho is S3! Lol! They have really good avocado shake from real avocados and bubble teas. They are generous with servings especially the veggies. They give you one peanut sauce and one fish sauce per person so you don't have to share. The lady who owns the place is also friendly and she knows us already. They are fast and food is affordable! Ran by a Vietnamese immigrant couple: wife up front (Saigon), husband in the back (Da Nang). Being Viet myself, it's my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the central NJ area! Very homey, a lot of locals coming in for take out and seating (social distanced, of course). If you like your pho broth on the sweet side, this is the place for you. They have several vegetarian options as well - I enjoyed the tomato stir fry tofu. Reminds of a fresh, tangy tofu. Banh Xeo can be ordered with chicken and is a perfect starter to share with lettuce. They seem to be known for the meat according to the New York Times review. Will definitely try the Bo Luc Lac next time! read more

Not sure what's going on here. Saigon was pretty empty on a Saturday night. Bánh Hôi Chao Tom (charbroiled ground shrimp wrapped on sugar cane) was neither ground nor wrapped on the sugar cane stalks, simply two cooked shrimp, sliced, and placed on top of the cane. Cá Salmon Kho (filet of salmon sautéed Vietnamese style) was not as described. Christine, the owner, told my wife (who hates spicy food) that it was cooked in soy sauce. When the dish arrived, not only was the salmon sauced with nuoc cham loaded with chili flakes, but was very dry and overcooked, while the sautéed vegetables were undercooked. The beef phô was pretty lackluster. I requested no tripe or tendon in the four-meat combo, but it didn't seem like any extra roast beef or brisket was added. In fact, I didn't see anything I would identify as roast beef at all, only brisket, which was sliced with the grain rather than against it, and, subsequently, very tough. The broth was not as flavorful as I remember it to be, and it was garnished not with Thai basil and lime, but with a lemon slice and cilantro. Really? Saigon has slipped. Time to find a new Vietnamese restaurant in the area. Too bad that all three of the ones close to me in downtown Plainfield went out of business years ago. read more

I've been searching for a good local Vietnamese restaurant since I've moved to NJ and have not found one until now. The complex where Saigon is located in is a pretty old looking strip mall with a crowded parking lot, but often times the most remarkable meals can be found in the unremarkable places. Once you enter the restaurant your taste buds get excited as the sweet smell of lemongrass is pretty prevalent. Arriving just before 1:00PM on a Sunday, Saigon was pretty busy with a nice lunch crowd and several people waiting to get their take out orders. Interestingly at one side of the restaurant is a counter with 50's diner style round bar stools where you can just eat at the counter...... I started with the fried spring roll appetizer and they were some of the best Vietnamese style spring rolls I've ever had! Each one was crisply fried with a crunchy outer shell and a tasty filling of pork and shrimp. Accompanying the spring rolls was a generous portion of fresh crunchy leafy lettuce wraps. Don't discount the dipping sauce which has that awesome southeast Asian flavor triumvirate of salty, sour, and sweet. Hint hint, this stuff is awesome over rice or poured judiciously into pho broth! Onto the entree where I ordered one of the house special pho dishes, the "Bahn Mi Bo Kho" or S13 reading off the menu. This dish is labeled as the House Special beef stew with French bread and it was indeed special. You like tomato? Then you'll love the broth which is infused with sweet tomato flavor and spices; vaguely similar to a spicy tomato bisque. I like my food spicy, so I added a some siracha sauce and lemon to the broth, and this amplified the flavors ten fold. Again the flavor profiles you're hit with are amazing.........sweet, sour, and salty. Adding to the broth's flavor profile were the ample sized beef chunks (just simple cuts of beef chuck) that were literally melt-in your mouth tender with much of the rich beef fat rendered into the broth. Balancing off the broth were the silky soft strands of rice noodles that were consumed quickly with accompanying noisy slurping :) My only knock on the dish was the description where it stated having French bread. I did see some crumbles of toasted French bread on the top of the bowl, but if you're going to label the dish beef stew with French bread, I would expect either more (or larger) French bread bits or even better a side piece of French bread that you can eat however you want. It's hard not to give Saigon 5 starts, as I have to try some other dishes first, but for New Jersey (and dare I say even NYC) Vietnamese food; Saigon was as tasty as Vietnamese food can get! read more

Quality and service not bad either, definitely worth coming back! I thought the food here was fine. The soup was just a little bland but other then that everything was fine. The decor is needs some help. It looks like a big take out place. Everything cheap and a bit dated. The service was so so. They didn't mess up the order or anything but it was just not friendly. Quite a pleasant experience aside from the route getting there. They have the Vietnamese pancake here - saw a pic posted by another yelper and decided to get it. Good call. Eat it with the lettuce wrap, with a little cilantro and sweet vinegar sauce. So good. I can just eat that for lunch. The other items are pretty standard (in a good way). Generous portion and lower price ($1 or so) than other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. We ordered iced coffee and was kind of disappointed that they didn't give us our own dripper. So it's only after about 10mins the coffee appears. Maybe you can ask for your own if you want. Next door is a some kind of a worship place so on a Sunday late morning, you hear people singing and music from outside. Not exactly what I am expecting going into a Vietnamese restaurant. read more

I've been coming here for 12 years now. The food is always fresh and consistently delicious!! I moved up north and can't always come but when I'm around the area, this is my go to when hungry. We always order our spring rolls, beef ball pho, and steak combo pho. These Vietnamese spring rolls are unlike the typical rice paper, they use Chinese dumpling wrapper fried to perfection. The crisp is real. Flavor is superb. To test how good their pho is, you try their broth alone. Their broth is so aromatic and full bodied. It's like a flavor bomb. Unlike most pho restaurants, their broth is not salty like a mouthful of salt. It's so luscious and velvety you just want to order another bowl of soup on its own. For those that beg to differ about the broth being bland... it's NOT bland I believe you're just used to sodium. read more

There is a lot of room inside, and you can pretty much choose where you want to sit depending how many people are in your party. Then again, I am a very frequent customer here and the lady who owns the place pretty much knows what my order is each time. In all honesty though, service is good here. no complaints. food:10/10 I always order the Pho here. The price isn't bad either it's about 7 or 8 dollars. The order I get is the S1 on their menu which is an extra large bowl of Pho. I always finish the whole thing and at the end I order an avocado shake for dessert. Sometimes I wish they and a bigger size then the extra lagre but oh well it's still good. overall, Saigon is one of my favorite places to get Pho and I hope you fellow yelpers like this place as well. I've been here twice from seeing the good reviews. First time was over a year ago with a close friend. Recently I went again with my girlfriend and remember why I totally forgot about the existence of this place. It brought back bad memories. First the place does not feel sanitary. Veggies in general are wilted or limp. Meat did not feel fresh. It's that weird feeling of you know the food CAN be good if the ingredients are properly prepared. Pho should have an appetizing smell, but it's "pungent" here. My girlfriend's pho had hair in it. They gave her a new bowl and it still was unpleasant. Mine was not much better. I questioned my own palate because all the other reviews indicated the food here was good. But then I went to another pho place today in South Plainfield, and that was delicious, and reminded me of what pho should actually taste like. So I recommend not to go to this restaurant unfortunately. read more

If you're Vietnamese, please do not go here. I'm Vietnamese and this restaurant is by far the worst. The food is awful. Actually, their food should be illegal. I had their porkchop and rice dish and the porkchop was disgustingly dry and the marinade was gross. My fiancé had their pho, and if you're Vietnamese, you would know what pho SHOULD taste like. Their pho broth was horrific and bland. I guess this is what happens when NJ doesn't have a huge Vietnamese population, so there is not really any competition and need to serve good Vietnamese food :( read more

This is our go to viet spot for the excellent rice dishes! The grilled meats are always tender and perfectly seasoned. I get the combo dish with pork chop, shredded pork and pork patty. My wife gets the same dish but she prefers the bbq pork b/c she too lazy to cut her meat. Pro tip: if you see them prepping the egg rolls, Order them!! It's good normally but better super fresh! Food: I ordered the spring rolls and pho. The spring rolls were pretty good, and enhanced by the fact that it was served with several pieces of lettuce, in true Vietnamese style. Unfortunately the broth was not very tasty, quite bland comparatively, and the noodles were under cook, there was a tough core to them that did get a bit better with time, but made for an un-enjoyable bowl of pho. Ambiance: It's more akin to a dive restaurant, which is one of the reasons why I picked it. But dives don't have to be dirty, which this one was. Which means it can be prone to bugs, of which I saw two. Not gnats or flies or something easily to swat away. One was a bug that quite literally I've never seen before, crawled out of the chopstick stand through one of the holes then over the tray and onto the table. The whole thing gave me the creepies. And then I happened to look up and on the wall towards the bathrooms, sitting 20 feet away, I was still able to see a large bug on the wall crawling at eye level up towards the ceiling. Finally, the server/owner was talking on their cell phone on a personal call the whole time. They sat and chatted, loudly (bc it was a cellphone, indoor voice it was not); not to take someone's order, but about personal stuff, which I didn't listen in, but it was difficult to enjoy my meal while someone was semi-yelling just a couple feet from me. Overall, I would not recommend and suggest you look elsewhere, unless you're in the mood for deep dive into a dirty dive restaurant. read more

By far the worst Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to... and I've been to A LOT. We stopped in because my boyfriend's coworker said the pork chops were good here. Right off the bat, an immediate loss of appetite from the lack of cleanliness. My boyfriend and I sat at one of the tables against the wall and you can see all the gunk on it. Christine, the owner (I assume), has an unpleasant attitude and it seemed like she kept slightly rolling her eyes at me after every time I finished speaking. We ordered L11 (pork with egg roll over rice noodle) and S16 (bun bo hue). I have to say my boyfriend's coworker was right about the pork being flavorful, but the bun bo hue lacked everything about that dish and had no flavor. It's supposed to be a spicy beef noodle soup with pork knuckle (as pictured in the menu, and we've gotten this dish many times at other Viet places - one of my favorites). When we got the bun bo hue, there were no pork knuckles at all after digging through the whole bowl. From the corner of our eyes, Christine was standing at the cash register watching us dig through the soup, and she starts speaking in her language to the chef. As soon as we looked up, she started walking over like she knew we were about to call her. I asked if the dish was S16 and she said yes. I then said, "but there's no pork knuckles." I'm thinking she thinks we're not familiar with the dishes because she pointed at the Vietnamese bologna and said, "that's the pork right there". I pointed to the picture in the menu and clarified, "no, the pork knuckles". (What I should've said was, "what you're saying is bologna.") She then responds with a, "oooh you want pork knuckles?" (UHM, NO CR*P I WANT WHAT I ORDERED AND WHATAM PAYING FOR) So she proceeds to the chef in her language and 2 mins later comes out with 1 of the thinnest slice of pork knuckle. I would never go back. There's other Vietnamese restaurants 1000x better that this one. read more

Anyways this time was just pathetic. We came with a party of 5 and the owner said she can't do anything for us so just grab a chair and sit. So after 15 minutes she finally came to ask for our order with an awful attitude until my girlfriend spoke in Vietnamese and she smiled for the first time I've ever seen in about 11 visits. The food came out really quick (about 10 minutes) and they screwed up 4/5 orders. My family was okay with the mix up so just kept the food to save trouble, but the dish I received looked super unappetizing and dry. I asked her for my correct order and she yelled "you don't want that?" and stormed off to place the order. I finally got my food, which was the dinner sized pepper steak and there was probably less than 3oz of meat. Even my mom's regular sized order was less than an ounce and barely enough to feed a child. All the meat orders are mostly salad and rice with little meat. The xl and l pho (two orders for one 130lb boy) that my brother ordered was basically the size of an instant ramen pack and 8 cups of salted water. We definitely won't be coming back. read more

I picked up carry out from Saigon for lunch today, as my first foray into Vietnamese food and I was not disappointed. I got there around 12:30 and it was pretty crowded, which is (almost) always a good sign. I ordered the Super Bowl and an Avocado shake. The Super Bowl was delicious, even the little lettuce and cucumber salad that was served on the side was tasty and I'm far from a fan of iceberg lettuce or bean sprouts. The spring rolls that were on top of the Super Bowl and the avocado shake were definitely the winners for me though. The spring rolls were crispy and filled with a delicious blend of meat. The avocado shake was addicting, and I'm ready to go back and grab another. I was warned by a friend that this place is a bit on the pricey side, and she was absolutely right. $13 for lunchtime takeout for one is a little more than I would pay on a regular basis, so I won't be going to Saigon often, but I will be going back. It is a below ok restaurant for Vietnamese standard. It is not by any mean authentic as majority of diners are Americans, whose jobs are around the area. So, this place is affordable and convenient for lunch. Not much competition around the area, so that's why this place is still in business. I had given it two tries, first time was "com suon nuong" which was kind of eatable, and second was "banh my bo kho", which the beef was stretchy (it's supposed to be very tender, falling off the bone kind of texture). Both were relatively easy to cook. However, ingredients were not the freshest and they added way too much salt and sugar in the foods. Lack of taste, and very amatuer in preparation. I may be bias just because I was born and raised in Vietnam, and expect a little more effort than what this place put in their foods. Plus side is it's cheap and fast. And again, not too many Vietnamese restaurants in the area, so you don't really have a choice other than this place when it comes to Vietnamese foods. read more
