Sadly the first rating for this store will be a low rating because of my recent experience shopping there. I shopped there recently in search for some picnic items to take to the beach and saw that our favorite beer was out of stock, so I caught the nearest safeway worker in passing to help possibly check in the back. (I saw my husband do this once before and the Manoa branch nicely checked the back for him and brought out a cold 12-pack for him.) The store is poorly organized, employees don't know where things are. They never have what's on my list. I have been shorted in change more times than is reasonable. It's a total mess on $5 Fridays as they can't get the sale items out in a timely manner. Prices are high...example: lemonade at Safeway is $5.99 and the same bottle at Walgreens is $3.99. This Safeway location is really convenient - it's the only grocery store in Hawaii Kai and they're open 24 hours!!!!! I can run out of the house and grab onesie - twosies of items before my big Costco runs. Or... just of items that are not cost-efficient to get at Costco next door. (Ie: some perishables that my family will not be able to inhale before it goes bad)... The cashiers are always friendly... although sometimes there are long lines... so I like to go not during "peak" hours (after-work)... going at "off-hours" is never a problem considering they are 24 hours!!!!!! No lines at the registers tonight, but the store still has quite a bit of foot traffic. Thanks Safeway for being out here and open 24 hours!!!! read more

Friendly service, neat and clean. Fresh produce. The things I want I can usually find.

Sometimes I get great service and sometimes terrible, so I middled the stars because there's no 2.5. Once I asked for extra grocery bags so my kid could cover her textbooks, and the guy happily gave me more than I needed. Once the lady stocking the meats showed me which ones were on sale. And then today, I was in line number 4 and noticed one the onions in my bag was moldy. "This is moldy, I'm going to get a new bag," I said to the checker, who just nodded. I asked him if he wanted the old bag as I didn't want to put it back on the shelf and he took it. I thought he would offer to have someone go in my stead but he did not, so I ran/shuffled back to produce and procured my bag. By that time, the lady in front of me was gone and there was a lady behind me who was wondering what the H was up. He did not let me input my phone number for the Safeway discount card (which happens a LOT) and he asked me to tell it to him, got it WRONG of course, then I had to repeat. Then Uncaring Cashier Dude bagged my groceries and I had to load them into my cart while he began ringing up the next client. Oh, and once the pork I bought here was bad the day I brought it home, but they accepted the return without a peep. So is it good or is it bad? I guess it depends on the day you go and who you get as your cashier and the sort of day he or she is having. I would think, as a union, they would train them to be equally excellent to warrant their union-ness, but apparently not. read more

This is the friendliest store on the planet. Every single person is a joy to run into. Never ever do you have to change lines to get someone efficient or pleasant. The cashiers are just beyond outstanding-every single one, every day! I have no relation or motive to anyone there...just live nearby and am so appreciative it is a nice place to be. I think this store should be highly rewarded by corporate. Give them gift cards and free grocieries or something super special as they totally deserve it!!! A simple question asked of the person at the cash register led to me being very upset. I asked, " Is there anymore Johnnie Walker Red in stock?". The person at the cash register answered, " I don't know. I don't stock that area." That person didn't say Good Morning, How are You? Go to Hell, or anything else. They didn't care. And they weren't going to bother themselves with trying to find out. That is poor service. And Safeway should be ashamed since they have gone to all the trouble to upgrade the store. They should try to upgrade the employees and teach them some manners. This particular person needs an upgrade in personal contact. Actually they should be removed from the floor immediately. How can you interact with other human beings in this day and age in that manner. Something is wrong with that person. A person at the cash register has to be out going and personable and the proper response should have been to check on it. Even if they couldn't have gotten an answer right away to at least made an effort. This person was a poor representation of Safeway. Sad state of affairs for humanity. I am editing my review based on Dawn's, the Safeway's representative, response. I felt the response was lacking. It was neutral and meant only to appease and not address the issue at hand. The employee was disrespectful, discourteous and unprofessional. How about addressing those issues? What are you going to do to insure your front line employees, the face of your business, represent your company as they should. Which will mean they treat people humanely and respectfully. read more

The sushi platter I brought today from the sushi counter in Safeway Hawaii Kai was the best I ever ordered. I've been ordering sushi platters from different places including well- known Japanese take-outs and restaurants, but this sushi platter from Safeway surpasses all of them! The fish is fresh and sashimi cut is thick and large. Everything on the plate was delicious and beautifully put together! The sashimi, Wasabi and ginger individually arranged in flower designs were a wonderful touch. Kudos to Julie, Safeway's sushi maker! read more

I know this is bad, but I always compare this grocery store to Foodland.....yeah, it's not as good. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad store, but they don't always have what I need. And for some reason, it doesn't feel like home....Foodland feels like home when you walk in.... I got poke bowls today....one hawaiian style ahi and one shoyu ahi. They were both ok, the fish was fresh and tasty, but the rice was kind of old tasting and hard...not the best feeling after spending 8.95 each. I do like the selection of poke they have.....I vow to try the vegetarian poke next time. 3.5 stars read more

I have been recently running to the Safeway here in Hawaii Kai specifically for the Ben & Jerry's pints of "Netflix peanut butter ice cream" and the "Strawberry Cream-cheese" which I absolutely love! And I realized just recently that if you download the Safeway app you can find discounts by clicking on the desired choice if it is on sale or at a discounted rate! So definitely look on your apps fir Safeway since they are a store that offers a bit more than just what the labels indicate in the store while observing those yellow sale tags! read more

After spending time selecting my fruit, the checker DANIEL threw down or flung every single bag over to the courtesy clerk. DANIEL has either a personality deficit condition or woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Whatever is going on with him, he has no business working in that position at Safeway. I would rather wait in the longest line than have him checkout my food...and believe me there are LONG lines at HK Safeway! My husband has had several instants of asking for help at the wrong time...because if they are going on their break they will NOT help you. They have absolutely no problem making you wait for at least 1/2 hour. This was pretty much the last straw for me personally at Safeway HK. Safeway Hawaii Kai is a grocery store and the only one in Hawaii Kai. They have a wide selection of gluten free foods and always have friendly staff. The only thing I don't like about is it, is their meats. I refuse to buy any type of meat there except chicken. Not sure what it is but most of their meats taste rancid. Do you have 20 to 40 minutes to wait in line? Then this is the store for you! Literally never more than 3 checkstands open, no self checkout and usually lines so long they go down the aisles. It's actually worth driving down to Foodland Farms as it's usually better stocked and almost always quicker to get in and out of. read more

Only game in town for groceries in Hawaii kai so i go here once a week. Self checkout is fast and easy and the staff there is very helpful. Prices are higher, but if u buy sales, it gets a little better. If u need flowers, very reasonable pricing, $6 for a bunch that I took to visit cemetery. read more

Here's a tip....if you can avoid shopping here please do! First of all the produce is often wilted, or on the verge of being rotten. The meat selection is poor and prices are outrageous. Its time for a new grocery shop in Hawaii Kai. I always make sure to do my shopping while I'm in town, or make the drive to Foodland. It's the only option in HK besides Costco. They are poor on organic. I once asked if they had organic celery and they said they have discontinued ordering it. (It was in high demand) and they decided its best to buy the celery w pesticides. They over price almost everything in comparison to whole paycheck (foods) or food land which is mind blowing because it's not any better quality but they know they can because it's all that is available in HK. read more

Disclosure: this review is solely towards the deli. This has nothing to to with the rest of the store, it's merchant, etc. My experience: I frequent other Safeways and it's affiliated stores, I know they aren't a bargain grocer, but they sometimes have great deals and do have a reasonable selection. Note, I've ordered the same thing at 4 other Safeways, and have never experienced this. Sooo, I like to treat myself every once in a while to one of their "fresh" breakfast burritos. The day I went, I was waiting over at the counter where you order sandwiches and burritos. It didn't say closed, but all the deli workers were heads down working on things. One lady said, I'll be with you in a minute. So 5+ minutes later she comes over. "What can I get you?" She asks. I replied, "I'd like one of your breakfast burritos." She replied, "we already pre-made them and they are over there." l asked, but "I like them without egg please." She replied, "that's not a breakfast burrito, we have pre made burritos over there." I gave up after another painful round of her trying to discredit my order. What isn't seen in words, is her utter distain for me asking for something that other safeways have no problem doing. Awesome checker today, he was fast. He looked tired and extremely focused as he grabbed each item with one hand passed it to the other to bag. Then he was scanning and sliding things down and the bagger left, he bagged fast. He could have filled the bags a bit more, but I could have brought my own, but I had a busy morning and expected to wait at least 15 minutes to check out instead of 2. Happy turkey day. read more

I am writing this review because I go here so often. I love Safeway - I have the Safeway For U App and in general think that the staff is great. THIS Safeway however leaves a little to be desired. Except for when I come here in the morning and I try to avoid that because the one line that they have open is usually so slow 0 I have yet to figure out why when hardly anyone is in the store, the staff are always shooting across the room to one another. Asking when they can get off work, who has worked the longest, who messed up and how they can't wait to leave. That does not give a vote of confidence for the consumer. The store itself is a lot smaller than I thought it would be for covering the Hawaii Kai area, and the produce always seems to be lacking, not fresh or just out of items. I used to go to the Beretania location when I lived in town and I miss the quality and the friendliness of the staff. I sometimes go to the kapahulu location just because it gets a little tiring to go to the one in my neighborhood and listen to all the complaints by the staff. I try to like this location - I really do. read more

I frequent this particular Safeway. We have come accustomed to things being out of stock in Hawaii. That being said it seems as though we have a 1 in 4 chance of being able to buy tonic or soda water when we go there. They are consistently out of stock. We have been shopping here for over 3.5 years and this always seems to be the case. It has become the running joke...pick up tonic and soda water...if they have it?! The other challenge I have with this store is it frequently seems under staffed on front end. The lines can be absolutely ridiculous. As a shopper I know the times to avoid because the lines are crazy. If you are running the store it would seem that you could identify those times as well and staff accordingly. The positive are there are some very friendly clerks on the front that are engaging during the check out process. read more

Pros: 1) always well stocked 2) front end staff fast, friendly and always laugh at my jokes. 3) floor staff are not pests: no "hello sir, 'help you find something" ten bloody thousand times like mainland Safeway. I feel like saying, at a mainland Safeway to one of the pests "here's the shopping list, I'll be at Starbucks while you "find" it all." Safeway Customer Service. I'm really disappointed in one of Safeway Hawaii Kai's managers. Two days ago (1/13/21) we bought a loaf of sourdough bread...I forget the brand. The next day we opened it and found that it was moldy. We looked at a date stamp on it and it said "1/2/21". We figured that was the date it was baked. So I took it along with our receipt back to Safeway and went to the customer service counter. A woman (Hawaiian Chinese?) dressed all in black with a black facemask asked what I wanted. I told her and gave her the bread and receipt. She checked the bread and looked at the date. She then said it was expired and that I shouldn't have bought it. Like it was my fault and that I shouldn't trust anything they put out for sale on their shelves. I couldn't believe that she, and through her actions Safeway, did not take responsibility for what they offer for sale and chose to blame me. How are we to have confidence in a store that thinks like that? I will do my best never to patronize them again. She did give me our money back as I refused a replacement having lost all confidence. From now on we'll drive to Foodland in Aina Haina where they have earned our confidence in what we choose to eat. Buyer beware at Safeway. read more

Ventures into Safeway to pick up some steaks and mushrooms for dinner. I didn't get a wagon as I figured I would just use my recycled bag to put my items in while walking around the store before checking out. Go to checkout and all the lines are busy, all moving quickly for Friday pau hana time. I put my bag with my items in it on the belt. Figured it would be ok........ Tyler, the cashier doesn't open the bag to take the items out, he turns the bag upside down and shakes the bag until the items fall out......... Seriously????? Are you kidding me??? That's how you treat people's groceries? You couldn't reach in and grab the food to take it out? The guy standing in line in back of me, looked at Tyler, then looked at me and took a couple of steps back thinking I was gonna loose my marbles...... I don't have the energy to engage in conversation with people that lack common sense! Yes, I should have taken the items out of the bag myself. However, I have don't this before and all the other clerks have managed to take things out of the bag or have used the scan gun to just scan the bar of all the items without really needing to unpack and repack the bag. This Hawaii Kai Safeway has been my "go to " store for the past 2 decades, but it was only recently I discovered a rare gem named Kent, in the meat department. He was so helpful about a special meat request (locally raised beef liver) that I suddenly felt like I was important, and that this is MY store! Thank you Kent! I went to Safeway on Monday 5/23 to get a couple of things. There were two open checkouts open and both had lines with15+ customers (possibly soon-to-be former customers). The lines went all the way past the front door headed to the deli department. I put my things back and left. It was not worth it to stand in the lines for two items. I can get them at Longs across the parking lot. I have to say it's not the first time I've left the store because of the long lines. They are so common at this Safeway. It doesn't matter what time of day as the lines there are frequently (but not always) frustratingly long. An employee advised one of my family member not to shop there on Sundays or Thursdays because those are not 'good' days to shop there! And evidently potential check-out clerks will have to pay $800 upfront in to the Union to get started in the job. Many people looking for these types of jobs don't have $800 cash to pay upfront in order to start the job. I feel for the checkers who are doing their best, but as a customer spending money there, you don't feel like your time and money matters to Safeway. I wish Foodland was still in Koko Marina, but the Aina Haina Foodland will be getting more of my business. Please, at least take down the sign that says if there is three people in line you will open another register. You won't! I've never seen it happen. It's such a tease and it's false advertising. I don't advise going there unless you've brought a book to read, Tolstoys "War and Peace" would be a good choice, so you have something to do while waiting in communist era lines there. read more

It's clean enough and has a number of items, but there's almost always a long line when I go. Although there are signs that say that they'll open more registers if there are more than 3 people in line, there are definitely more than 3-4 people in line. When I looked for batteries, I went down aisle 7 that said batteries on the sign, along with magazines and stationary. There isn't a single battery to be found. There were lightbulbs, though, that weren't on the sign. Thanks, Safeway. There are a lot of groceries here and adequate parking. There are restaurants and other stores nearby, making it convenient. Based on the service and wait times, I'd prefer to go to Foodland in Aina Haina or Times by Kahala Mall. If you can get the items at Longs next door, that's probably for the best. read more

This review is specifically for Daisy, who works in the Bakery department. This review is way overdue as this is based on an experience I had with her for my daughter's birthday party last November. Daisy provided me with one of the BEST customer service experiences I've ever had, and coming from someone who works in a very customer service-oriented profession, that is saying a LOT! Anyhoo, on to my story.... I approached Daisy at the bakery counter to order cupcakes for my daughter's birthday party. I mentioned that we were going to decorate the cupcakes as part of one of the birthday party activities and kindly asked if I could have the frosting in a separate tub. Not only did she graciously say that she could do so, she also offered to give a separate container for the sprinkles, a handful of pastry bags (for my daughter and friends to fill and frost the cupcakes with), and brought out the bakery's entire selection of cupcake toppers for me to choose from. There were literally hundreds of cupcake toppers to choose from! Even though I was there for a loooong time, Daisy never made me feel rushed or gave the impression of being impatient with my indecisiveness. She was warm, friendly and kindly answered all of my questions. I've been ordering cupcakes at Safeway for years now and had NEVER been offered all of these extra options (which, by the way, were at NO ADDITIONAL COST!), or been met with such sincere kindness and graciousness. I've since made two more cupcake orders since then and will continue to do so because of the customer service experience I received from Daisy. Whenever I go to Safeway, I always make it a point to swing by the bakery section, not just to "ooh" and "ahh" over the delicious treats, but to see if Daisy's smiling, cheerful face is there.
