a sign in front of a building

Thank you Alvin... It's a place that if you know...you know. Yobo Mart is located right on the corner of Pensacola and Davenport Street in the midst of Makiki it's been on my mind for quite some time as seeing the pics posted by bestie Alvin though without Yelp directions I would have no clue where to find them. It is on the ground floor of Village Maluhia condos which is rare for this part of town and with a giant garbage truck blocking Davenport Street for quite some time I almost gave up as there's zero parking in the area I drove into the building's parking lot accessible on Davenport Street only to realize it's for tenants only...oops! The menu here is quite simple and the standard love of all things Korean food I really wanted the Korean BBQ Chicken and Kalbi though don't see it as an option and asked if that's possible...and yes it was woohoo!! This mart is quite busy with a steady flow of peeps coming in for various reasons, snacks, household items, or just a drink what a treasure to have this gem conveniently available for the neighboring area. I could smell the cooking in the back and mmmmm it's making me so hungry the generous portion makes it impossible to see the three compartment plate...two pieces of kalbi but into three and three pieces of chicken along with kimchee and Mac salad (are obviously store bought) but the proteins are just the most tender and flavorful bite I've had in quite some time. Chicken and kalbi both is tender not too salty but had the perfect flavor where you don't need a knife, there are some grocery items though mostly are snacks and drinks the food here is legit and place to rave about...if you can find parking. Thank you!

Received a post card in the mail several months ago and this caught the attention of me and my husband. He picked up dinner one night, and learned that new owner's took over Yobo Mart. Located on the corner of Pensacola & Davenport Streets in the Village Maluhia Apartment of Makiki. My husband ordered Gimbap and a Bul Go Gi Plate which was so delicious! I loved it! A couple Friday's ago, I wanted to try something else. Called in my order and asked the guy what's on the menu today. He said they were serving Kalbi plate, and I think it was also Garlic Chicken. It was ready for pickup in about 20 minutes. This Kalbi was even more satisfying! Mandoo was good too! You can also find small grocery items, liquor, snacks, and other household items. Street parking only.

Im giving 5 stars because of the friendly service and the tasty yet unique spam musubi. Sam - is super helpful and friendly- if they run out of the musubi and you wanted more than 2 they will gladly make them for you. I also tried the bbq chicken which was also delicious but not as addicting as the musubi. Parking is on the street so call ahead if u don't want to wait for them to make your food. They do have lunch specials but i haven't been able to try all of them yet.

And they've got everything! It is widely regarded by locals and visitors as having some of the best grocery-store poke (like spicy ahi and shoyu varieties) sold deli-style by the pound. Unfortunately, we were not there for the poke. My wife was on a mission to find my son his fav bread- ube pandesal. And her personal fav- butter mochi. For the life of me, I couldn't find either or. But thanks to a staff member who offered to help, we secured the goods! And both my son and wife scored big-time. Not only did she help us locate our two essential products, but she also made some really good food recommendations for the future (as we were already stuffed from eating breakfast earlier). Overall, I was really impressed with my first time visiting. The grocery store is clean, well organized, and fully staffed! I can't wait to be in Hawaii again so that I can pay them a visit and try the famous poke!

The fish was thick, flavorful, and didn't feel overly sauced or heavy. What stood out the most was the quality , you can really tell the difference. Every bite was clean, rich, and satisfying. It's a quick service so as well. It's also way more filling than it looks. I didn't expect it to hold me over like it did. Honestly, no complaints. If you're in Hawaii and thinking about poke, this is a must. I can't wait to come back and visit and this be my first stop!

Anyway we shop here every time we need Japanese and other Asian ingredients. Like when I got obsessed with Japanese rice, Don Quijote was my first stop. Or when I was obsessed with saba and stocked up on packs of frozen fillets. Or when I wanted cheap sake for DIY skincare. Huge selection of everything - cosmetics/skincare as soon as you enter, souvenirs, fruits and vegetables, bakery, aisles of ramen and snacks, etc. Interestingly, the hot food section serves a variety of local Filipino items as well. While conveniently open 24 hours, Don Quijote is not the place to pick up freshly prepared food before 6:00am (despite what Google told me). When I have a choice, I will wait and go to another place that doesn't lock items up like that. I would rather the store pay more for security and loss prevention than to inconvenience shoppers and make them get customer service to unlock items. That's just me. I went to the Money Services counter, where I was told the fee to cash my check would be $8, which I was fine with. The associate tried twice to cash my check, but both attempts were denied. She told me she couldn't do the transaction and went off to lunch. I tried getting someone else to help me but he stated he was an operator not a manager. So her co-worker explained to me that it wasn't an issue with my identification. At first, I thought it might have been because the address on my passport wasn't current, so I provided another form of identification along with a piece of mail showing my name and mailing address. Unfortunately, that didn't make a difference. The associate explained that it may have been because it was my first time cashing a check of that amount at Walmart and suggested that I go directly to my bank instead. While I appreciated the associate's efforts in explaining it to me, the experience was still extremely disappointing. I had planned to use the money to buy groceries, but since I couldn't access my funds, I had to return everything I had picked out and leave empty-handed. It was a frustrating and discouraging end to an already long workday. I understand that policies and verification systems are in place for security, but I wish there had been a clearer explanation or an alternative solution to make it right with me. I was so disappointed, I just deposited the check through my own Chase mobile banking. A bank I haven't used in over a year and a half since I moved to Hawai'i. To make matters worse, the employees started discussing my situation in the corner in Tagalog as if I wasn't right there. I wish people didn't do that. Speak in another language thinking other people don't understand you. I speak Visaya, English, and Tagalog by the way. I was born in the Philippines and understand the language... It was just a very discouraging encounter. I walked out of Walmart trying not to sob because after two weeks of waiting for a paycheck, and not being able to go to the bank with my work hours, it's been incredibly difficult to have money in my pocket. I was really counting on Walmart to take care of me today. So, reluctantly, I took a picture of my check instead and deposited it through my mobile phone and now I have to wait days for it to go through. What a rough day.

And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. The reason why he chose Tamashiro over other grocery stores was simple--it was quality and because of my Nanay (grandma). His mom purchased from here and made so many delicious dishes. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display. Back then when you were allowed to sample a grape or poke to make sure it was good before buying. But more than that, it was time with him. I still remember the excitement I felt when I saw the pink building with the huge crab. I thought back then was to look at everything but now I understand that it meant something more..... something special--time with my dad. It's with a sad heart that Tamishiro Market is now closed.
