We've been to Hawaii many times! Sadly, I've never walked into a Foodland before today. Amazing! It's Hawaii's largest locally owned and operated grocery store chain. And they've got everything! It is widely regarded by locals and visitors as having some of the best grocery-store poke (like spicy ahi and shoyu varieties) sold deli-style by the pound. Unfortunately, we were not there for the poke. My wife was on a mission to find my son his fav bread- ube pandesal. And her personal fav- butter mochi. For the life of me, I couldn't find either or. But thanks to a staff member who offered to help, we secured the goods! And both my son and wife scored big-time. Not only did she help us locate our two essential products, but she also made some really good food recommendations for the future (as we were already stuffed from eating breakfast earlier). Overall, I was really impressed with my first time visiting. The grocery store is clean, well organized, and fully staffed! Aloha, THE BEST poke I've ever had. I got a 2-scoop bowl over white rice with the furikake salmon and avocado ahi -- and everything tasted incredibly fresh. The fish was thick, flavorful, and didn't feel overly sauced or heavy. What stood out the most was the quality , you can really tell the difference. Every bite was clean, rich, and satisfying. This was my first time going to Foodland, and I absolutely loved it! There is such a large selection of hot lunches, poke, ready-to-eat snacks, and everything in between. At first, when I walked in, I was kind of overwhelmed, like where do I start?!!! If you're coming from the mainland, the style of this grocery store reminds me of a Whole Foods. I got some fresh poke (and holy guacamole, there is a HUGE selection to pick from!), 2 cans of banana water (what the heck? I didn't even know you can make banana water LOL), some sparkling coconut water, and some veggies. I loved everything I got, and I'm already planning another grocery list to go to Foodland for more of their goodies! Some of their prices are a little higher than those of other grocery stores, but not terribly so. Foodland Market City branch located in the Market City Shopping Mall on Harding Avenue. Nice store that serves the Kaimuki and Kapahulu area. As you enter on your left will be the Floral department which features fresh flowers, arrangements, lei's, and balloons . After you past the floral department you'll find the Deli and Bakery departments. They have a nice selection of pastries, breads, and ready to eat foods. You're sure to be impressed by their produce and meat / seafoods departments. Nice produce also features Organic vegetables. The seafood department is well known for serving up some of the tastiest Poke on the island. Sales associates and cashiers are very knowledgeable and efficient. I know this is a grocery store but the poke here is amazing!!! The worker was so kind, she let me sample everything I was interested in and explained which ones were fresh / frozen. Man. I went to Foodland twice in my 3 days here. I loooooooooove their poke. Prob not the best on the island compared to poke restaurants but it has such a wide selection. For grocery store poke it is ELITE. You go in and it's straight up a massive grocery store and you can find the poke section. They have seated areas where you can eat your food as well. Don't expect a restaurant experience you are literally grabbing and going here. Favs were the spicy tuna, hamachi, and Hawaiian style/shoyu tuna. The wasabi salmon wasn't bad either. Ordered a side of rice to eat with this. I could eat this everyday literally. Previous years had the California one which was solid.. Stopped by Foodland and picked up a half-pound of limu ahi poke, and it absolutely hit the spot. The ticketed counter went by fast, so it's always a nice spot to stop by especially when in a rush. The poke tasted incredibly fresh, with nice big chunks of ahi and just the right amount of saltiness from the limu. Simple, clean flavors done right, exactly what you want from good poke. This Foodland is very much a cross between Safeway and Sprouts/Whole Foods if you're from California based on the products and layout. They have a great deal on the best coconut water I've ever had (Foodland brand coconut water with pulp, better than fresh imo) for $1.50 each if you buy two. My salmon shoyu poke was $12, a little too salty and there wasn't enough rice. My brother got half and half salmon and ahi, was happy that he got very large scoops, and then had to double-take at the $20 price. The workers didn't say anything beforehand, but according to him they gave him too much fish so there's nothing to complain about. Onto the negatives, the breadfruit they had was very moldy, and there was once a dog right at the poke counter sniffing all the ready made containers. read more

My personal favorite is the spicy mayo ahi because of how creamy it is. The fish melts when you eat it. This place came highly recommended by friends and Reddit threads alike. Located inside a grocery store with a large selection of flavors. They use a ticketing system so you can grab a number and look at the selection without having to wait in a line. Very generous with samples as well, the lady behind the counter gave me 4 samples without me even asking, she just heard me talking to my wife about what flavors looked good. Ended up getting Hawaiian style salmon and ahi. Best ahi poke I've had in America, super clean bite, just very flavorful and fresh tasting. Same was true with salmon which I generally prefer but the tuna might've been better here. Don't bother with the salmon kombu onigiri it was very dry and lacking in flavor. They give you chopsticks at checkout and there's a little area you can sit and eat near the entrance of foodland. Did end up at around 22 dollars which is a bit pricy, but I felt like it was worth the quality. I split it with my wife and we left fairly satisfied. read more

Being that Foodland is largest locally owned grocery store, they pride themselves on being community focused who make their customers a priority. Here you will find all of your grocery needs- fresh produce, baked goods, hot deli items, assorted beverages, frozen foods, and a plethora of poke options. Be aware that the seafood department/poke food case display gets BUSY. Long lines are created quickly and the staff likes to work rapidly to keep things moving. My suggestion is to browse before getting into the line because employees and patrons won't be amused with indecisiveness or lagging. Now this may not be the best poke I've had but it hits the spot during cravings and it sure is a lot cheaper buying at Foodland. Purchase as much or as little as your heart desires and you are able to try multiple varieties. 3 stars for the poke I've purchased but a 4 star rating as a whole for Foodland. The foodland is located in a plaza with other restaurants. It can get pretty crowded looking for a space to park. Came here due to Recs of their poke. Walked in and wow long poke line. You grab a number and they work fairly quickly to get everyone helped. I ordered 2 poke bowls to try 4 different kinds of poke but once mixed together was a bit hard to tell the different flavors. It comes with rice and if you ask can also get sides of crab salad and seaweed salad. The fish was pretty fresh. The market also has other items in the deli like bento boxes and masubi. They also have a bakery and tried the ube mochi cake which was pretty good. And you can get your groceries here as well. read more

This Foodland's prepared food quality has really gone downhill. Would not recommend the prepared food AT ALL. Grocery store items are fine, do not get prepared food, poke included, it's not good anymore. Ahh Foodland. We almost always frequent this location when visiting and shopping here in Oahu. Of course, we almost always come up here to have some of their delicious poke, as well as other Hawaiian snacks along the way. There was a considerable line for their poke. Not a surprise because Foodland's is good if not, just as good as the heavy hitters in the island. During my 4-day trip to Honolulu, I visited at least six different Foodland locations across Oahu and came to this one at least three times. Out of all of them, this location stood out as the cleanest and most elevated. It's conveniently located in one of the largest open-air shopping centers in the world, making it super accessible during a day out. This was my first time visiting Hawaii from the mainland, and I was genuinely impressed by the variety and quality this specialty supermarket offers. The poke was fresh and flavorful just as good as anything you'd find at high-end poke spots in California. While prices are a bit higher, it's what you'd expect in a major tourist destination. Still, the overall experience felt worth it. I really wish we had something like Foodland back on the mainland - fingers crossed for one someday! read more

Not all food lands are the same! Cute and Smaller and older store. I went to 3 locations while on vacation here and this was my favorite location as well as the customer service was top notch. They had more selections of poke. My favorite poke is the Oyster Poke. Our last day here I came back to this location and they didn't have my oyster Poke. My husband asked and the older gentleman said.. "if you don't mind waiting they will make it for you" They were so busy and had a long line - I'm surprised they offered. The Auntie in the back made a fresh batch of Oyster Poke for me. They also have the cutest recyclable grocery bag, don't forget to snatch a couple of those. The VERY best in poke when it comes to Hawaiian style. I loved every bite from beginning to end. I wanted more when I had my last bite. It is one of those things that cannot be imitated on the mainland. We even tried to use the foodland recipe to recreate the standard poke but to no avail. It must be the water or the fish that is sourced. The flavors are just out of this world. I enjoyed the spicy poke pictures on the left and the creamy one on the right. I forget the names exactly. There is a line during lunch and no wonder. The flavors are incredible and the portions are extremely generous. There is no seating but we didn't mind inhaling this in the car before our next stop.
