We were excited to see a Lawson's, especially one that sold shaved ice. We ordered a small fruit punch shaved ice, but unfortunately the ice was packed so tightly that it was hard rather than soft like we expected. On top of that, there wasn't enough syrup, so the flavor was very light and it mostly just tasted like eating ice. My friends ordered a few other items. One got strawberry, which was good, but that one had too much syrup. We also tried a vanilla soft serve, and fair warning, it is very tart. Another flavor we tried tasted exactly like Hubba Bubba gum. The grape flavor, though, was pretty good. On another note, service is good. The older gentleman that mans the front is very cute and nice. The older lady was working hard to get all our shaved ice orders out. Store itself does not have seating. Anyway, I was happy after searching through a number of stores to find a few cards here. This little convenience store carries gifts and snacks, including shaved ice, musubi and malasadas. The place is not fancy but has an old school Hawaii feel, that I like. The clerks are aloha friendly. I also picked up a bottle of Hawaiian spring water that was reasonably priced. A lot of their merchandise has Hawaiian origins. Lawson's has a long and complicated background. The first store was founded in 1939 in Ohio by a dairyman named Lawson to sell his dairy products. The chain grew but was sold to Consolidated Foods, then Dairy Mart, then Circle K. Daiei Inc. (a Japanese company) bought rights for Japan in 1975 from Consolidated and opened a bunch of stores in Japan and, recently, two locations in Honolulu (the only US stores that maintain the Lawson name). This store on Kalakaua opened in 2012 next to Moana Surfrider. So that's probably more than anyone wants to know, but I was intrigued by the origin. I came across this little Lawson-style convenience store while I was on the way to Waikiki Beach and dam, thank god I did. It's a small shop, filled with with unique snacks and drinks that will be hard to find elsewhere in Hawaii. It felt like I was in Japan again. The best part was definitely the Dole Whip. I got the vanilla pineapple swirl, and it was perfect. Creamy, refreshing, and not too sweet. I kept passing this place walking up and down Waikiki so I finally stopped so my little one could have a rainbow shave ice. I should've grabbed two because he didn't share. I have been to Lawson before but that was in Japan.. this one is different. They had some Oden, which I have never had outside of the frozen one you boil yourself from the Japanese market.. so I bought a few pieces and ate it back in my hotel room. You're given a pick up number and asked to wait outside until you hear your number. When you hear your number,come back in, show it, drop it in the box, and get your order. Simple! It's on the main road: on the ocean side of Kalakaua Avenue, right before the Police Station and across from the Hyatt Regency. Note: There is another Waikiki location at the Sheraton Hotel - at the beginning of Kalakaua Avenue. This particular Lawson Station is at the end of Waikiki, nearer to the zoo and the Duke Kahanamoku Statue. I was looking through a "tourist coupon book" - the kind you find on the street in a magazine rack - when I saw a coupon for Lawson Station! It gave me a reason to check out this convenience store, especially because we had a staycation at the Hyatt! The coupon was for 10 percent off of a shave ice, Dole Whip, or Uncle's Ice Cream Sandwich! However, when we showed the coupon to the clerk at Lawson Station, she said that the Dole Whip had to be a swirl with vanilla soft serve. Hmmm... I'd rather have the pure pineapple flavor only - not a mix with vanilla. I wanted a shave ice anyway! The Traditional Rainbow option consisted of passion fruit (yellow), melona (green), strawberry (red), and vanilla (blue) for $5.50. The coupon's ten percent off is more than the amount of tax, so, it's better than nothing! The flavors were good and the syrup was enough to get to the center of the ice! However, the texture of the ice wasn't as fine as Waiola's or Shimazu's. Just saying... The rainbow shave ice was just a colorful treat on a humid day. We were walking all over Waikiki and the shave ice was a fun way to get rehydrated! Oh - and now I can say that I've been inside the Lawson Station. It's not as well stocked as 7-Eleven or ABC Store. We decided to get a shave ice while we were here and got the rainbow (because we are so indecisive). The shave ice was really good. I liked the syrups they used and the vanilla really shined through the other flavors. So if you don't like vanilla make sure you leave that flavor out. There were a few large chunks of ice but overall it was light and fluffy liked you'd expect. This was one of the cheaper shave iced that we found in Waikiki, almost half the price of some other shops. 4/5 for the shave ice. The store is at a really convenient location. We stayed at Sheraton Princess Kaiulani so it was about two minute walk away from the hotel and from the beach. They have lots of interesting flavors and we got our shaved ice on the day we visited the Zoo! It was really soft and flavorful and we both enjoyed it. It's also an convenience store but the prices were a bit high for snorkels, sunscreen and so on. This Lawson Station I came upon on my short Hawaii trip to Waikiki recently resembles absolutely nothing to the Lawson convinience stores I've been to in Japan. I guess the proprietors here use the Lawson name by license only, if they do at all. Its just another overpriced souvenir gift shop similar to the ABC marts in the area. There is a few random Japanese products for sale such as bottled tea, snacks, and some day old looking musubis at the counter. The middle aged Filipino couple behind the register seemed more interested in yakking away in Tagalog to each other than ringing up my purchases, so I had to cut in to interrupt their conversation. In terms of customer service, they were not very accommodating or helpful at all.
