Best Musubi in Hawaii, I know there's tons of musubi available in Hawaii but I would say it is the Best musubi in Downtown, Honolulu! Whenever I am in the area or wanting to grab musubi for family or just ME, I make a stop here. Bonus, you get those musubi hot & fresh, if you don't see them on counter or the musubi you want is not available in egg with spam or just spam, only 2 varieties, mom or pop will make it right there for you. @$2.00 for spam only and I believe $2.45 for egg with spam. Located at Kukui Plaza tucked away in the back, you will have to walk pass few shops, to see the handwritten sign of " Best Musubi in Hawaii" posted on the door. Although there are bentos available & other goodies, I am mostly here for the delicious musubi. Why so good? My opinion, lets start with spam, perfectly cooked, with secret sauce, love the umami taste while I took my first bite, and the rice is hot & moist, not watery & not premium rice but it is still good, along with the nori. I loved everything about this musubi. Great spam to rice ratio. The only thing that I need is some of my chili spices! Mom & Pop is super friendly, I remember asking how many musubi's they sell a day and owner mentioned they make and sell over 100 a day. Glad there's a place where I can get musubis close by me! This is the cutest mom and pop shop. Anyways, they have fresh bentos and musubis. They ran out of the plain/regular so I bought the ones with eggs in it! For 3 of them it came out to $7.05 which isn't too bad. Although, I really do wish there was more of a teriyaki flavor. It was really subtle which was okay. Overall, I wouldn't mind coming back! Honestly, it's the perfect place to pick up a snack or lunch. Also note, they take CASH ONLY! This was five stars in my book up until today. Best musubis on island. Hands down. Usually come here in the morning when the older man is working. He super nice and I've seen him making the musubis fresh. For some reason I took a super late lunch today (2pm) and decided I wanted some musubis. Walked over and didn't see anyone as I approached. Looked at the counter and saw the woman sitting down, reclined with her bare ass foot on the counter. Not sure if she was picking gunk from her toes or peeling dried skin or whatever, but that should be nowhere near your food. As I stood there shocked, she jumped on, turned on the water in the sink and RINSED her hands for literally 3 seconds. She turned around and I just said "nope" and walked out. Keep your grooming at home or in the bathroom. Not out on the counter where all your food is laid out. Sticking to only going here in the mornings. If I can ever get over the sight of that nasty, crusty foot near the musubis.... read more

Okay, okay. I'm doing a 180 on Kukui Convenience. I have a better understanding on this place now after a second visit; when it's only the guy working there, odds are that all the musibis and bentos were premade the night before and reheated in the morning. That does explain the more dry rice and Spam. When it's only the lady there, there's more selections, and the musubi is freshly made to order. Wow, what a big difference that makes! So is it the "Best Musubi in Hawaii?" I can't say without actually trying every single Spam Musubi offered in the State, and I'm not going to try, but it was a pretty dang good Spam Musubi. The rice was warm and moist. The spam was thick and very tasty. There was just the right amount of sweetness in the marinade/sauce to balance out the salty, strong tasting Spam, and a nice hint of umami from the soy sauce. It's also a pretty good deal at $1.50 each. The lady was friendly and nice too. I'm not sure why it's night and day between the two, but I'll be sure to check if she's there whenever I decide to go there again. There's also bentos, and they're pretty good deals. Breakfast is $2.75, and Lunch is $4.00. Every day may be different because the second time, I saw a tray of Korean fried chicken and crispy gau gee. First time was just musubi and breakfast bentos. There's only street parking available. Or if you like chance'um, you can park next to the steps on Fort St., put the hazard lights on and run in and out. Yes, I recommend Kukui Convenience. There was a sign on the front door saying "Best Musubi in Hawaii ". I went inside and found only 2 spam musubis left in the heater. Could the sign be the reason for having only 2 left? Da initial bite was interesting. The rice was not as savory or delectable when compared to other spam musubis. First, the rice was not as fluffy when compared to others. Lack of moisture....a cheaper brand of rice....a more diluted teriyaki sauce-on-the-rice could be reasons. The piece of spam seemed like it was "on-a-diet"! lol! Probably just above minimum weight or thickness.....it lacked substance and did not please my palate. A kind of "artificial piece" that had a good char on both sides. Because of this, it tasted dry and was thinner than most. The nori was ok. This store has a good variety of snacks and drinks. They sell bentos and other lunch items. The cashier charged me $2.00 for the spam musubi. I had to give it a try and honestly, I would not put this in the top 5. Extremely rude service. The lady is indifferent, zero personality, no smiles but not necessarily rude either, but the old man is rude. I buy musibis every so often and always present the exact amount. The price recently went up from $2.40 to $2.45 he saw I had $2.40 and yelled at me that its now $2.45 and then just turned around and started doing other work instead of waiting for me to get the extra nickel. Taken aback my first reaction was to go off on him and wreck his life but fortunately for him I decided to just leave and never go there ever again. If youre reading this, you know who I am. Consider yourself lucky I chose to be the bigger person that day. Musubis are good but it aint worth that type of treatment. My family and I have been coming here for many years. It's definitely my fav spam musubi on the island. It's saucy, sweet, and salty at the same time. Perfect ratio of rice:spam. The egg one has a lighter taste and furikake! But I prefer the classic. They also sell breakfast and lunch bentos at a great price. My fav breakfast bento is the one with lil smokies that is pictured. Perfect amount and not oily. They also have a ham and cheese croissant sandwich that is super yummy lol. Fav lunch bentos are the mapo tofu, beef and broccoli, charsiu, and pork eggplant. The chicken ones would make the list, but sometimes I don't eat them right away so the texture hardens up a bit. If they're freshly eaten, they're amazing! Husband and wife are super sweet. To point out to other reviewers, sometimes they have nicer days... but I've never been bothered by their service. I prefer them more than other options in downtown lol. Well I did and was running a little behind especially in eating so I saw this little store as I was heading out to complex and stopped in. I noted the musubi, other items like chicken fried and then i noted the fried manapua and knew that would hit the spot. So I bought one $1.25 decent size char sui fried manapua was not disappointed but was curious if that is how much they normally are at their distributors. But the shop served its purpose in quick meals and snacks for on the go. But they close at around 630pm so best to grab the snack prior . read more

The other day I had a very engaging conversation about the best spam musubi. Familiar names was mentioned but then my friend said the best musubi is at Kukui Convenience across HPU Downtown. So I made a long walk there just to try their musubi. It was a bit difficult to find, just look for the intersection behind the stairs on the first floor and you will see a big sign which says Best Musubi in Hawaii. With a statement like that I was excited to try. Its a small convenience store with bentos near the front door. I walked in and was lured by the $4.00 bentos, however I was determined. I am here for spam musubis so I will only get that. I immediately noticed she had a portable stove top and was in the process in making some fresh musubis. So nice to know she makes it fresh. I ordered 2 musubis with egg for $1.75 each. First of all not bad price for a spam musubi with egg. I took a bite and a smile to my face appeared. The spam was well flavored and the nori was not soggy. The rice was not overbearing and perfect amount to a good size flavored spam. I will not officially claim this to be the best spam musubi on the island. I honestly can't say what is the best, however I can say KUKUI CONVENIENCE is one of my favorites. read more

I've been sick and didn't want to go far. So I stopped in to Kukui convenience store. I ordered 2 combo bentos. $4 each. One with garlic chicken/mushroom chicken and the other garlic chicken/mapo tofu. I also bought a homemade brownie for dessert. The garlic chicken was slightly stale from sitting in the warmer all morning, but it was tasty. Th mapo tofu and mushroom chicken was yummy. It's not fine dining, but fitting for its name "bento". Its a mom and pop kinda store ..This place is my favorite place to come to when I take my children to the doctors..We always make it a point to stop by and get something. (Its a good treat for the kids, after they have their shots..aawww) but anyhow, my kids love their spam musubi and I love their garlic chicken plate, for some reason its not that bad at all.
