The BEST Spam & Egg Musubi!!
    Chris D.

It's true... they have THE BEST Spam Musubi!! Prices are good... owner is sweet! Only thing, it's CASH ONLY.... BUUUUT, they do have an ATM machine right in their store ($2.75 fee, not including your financial institution's fee too).

    Mapo tofu on rice

Had mapo tofu, was Ono, maybe cuz I was starving lol. But hit the spot. Fast already in the warmer just grab and go.

Go up these steps and stay on the right hand side

Okay, okay. I'm doing a 180 on Kukui Convenience. I have a better understanding on this place now after a second visit; when it's only the guy working there, odds are that all the musibis and bentos were premade the night before and reheated in the morning. That does explain the more dry rice and Spam. When it's only the lady there, there's more selections, and the musubi is freshly made to order. Wow, what a big difference that makes! So is it the "Best Musubi in Hawaii?" I can't say without actually trying every single Spam Musubi offered in the State, and I'm not going to try, but it was a pretty dang good Spam Musubi. The rice was warm and moist. The spam was thick and very tasty. There was just the right amount of sweetness in the marinade/sauce to balance out the salty, strong tasting Spam, and a nice hint of umami from the soy sauce. It's also a pretty good deal at $1.50 each. The lady was friendly and nice too. I'm not sure why it's night and day between the two, but I'll be sure to check if she's there whenever I decide to go there again. There's also bentos, and they're pretty good deals. Breakfast is $2.75, and Lunch is $4.00. Every day may be different because the second time, I saw a tray of Korean fried chicken and crispy gau gee. First time was just musubi and breakfast bentos. There's only street parking available. Or if you like chance'um, you can park next to the steps on Fort St., put the hazard lights on and run in and out. Yes, I recommend Kukui Convenience. Disregard my first review!

What a hidden gem. My friend who works around the area suggested this spot and claimed to have one of the best spam musubis in town and sure did not disappoint. $1.75 for a well seasoned musubi sign me up! They also offer bento boxes starting at $3.25-$5.50! What a steal! And like any convenience store they have all sorts of snack items

Piece of spam is thin and overall rice is flat.

There was a sign on the front door saying "Best Musubi in Hawaii ". I went inside and found only 2 spam musubis left in the heater. Could the sign be the reason for having only 2 left? Da initial bite was interesting. The rice was not as savory or delectable when compared to other spam musubis. First, the rice was not as fluffy when compared to others. Lack of moisture....a cheaper brand of rice....a more diluted teriyaki sauce-on-the-rice could be reasons. The piece of spam seemed like it was "on-a-diet"! lol! Probably just above minimum weight or thickness.....it lacked substance and did not please my palate. A kind of "artificial piece" that had a good char on both sides. Because of this, it tasted dry and was thinner than most. The nori was ok. This store has a good variety of snacks and drinks. They sell bentos and other lunch items. The cashier charged me $2.00 for the spam musubi. I had to give it a try and honestly, I would not put this in the top 5. This store is convenient for the downtown workers that park in the building.

    Musubis and a breakfast bento!

Would you believe me if I said I ate all of these? (refer to attached photo) ...fine, I didn't... but they're so good that I always have to stop myself. My family and I have been coming here for many years. We occasionally buy them out of all of their musubis, and they make even more for us! :) I've shared it with friends and coworkers, and everyone agrees that this is a damn good musubi. It's definitely my fav spam musubi on the island. It's saucy, sweet, and salty at the same time. Perfect ratio of rice:spam. The egg one has a lighter taste and furikake! But I prefer the classic. They also sell breakfast and lunch bentos at a great price. My fav breakfast bento is the one with lil smokies that is pictured. Perfect amount and not oily. They also have a ham and cheese croissant sandwich that is super yummy lol. Fav lunch bentos are the mapo tofu, beef and broccoli, charsiu, and pork eggplant. The chicken ones would make the list, but sometimes I don't eat them right away so the texture hardens up a bit. If they're freshly eaten, they're amazing! Husband and wife are super sweet. To point out to other reviewers, sometimes they have nicer days... but I've never been bothered by their service. I prefer them more than other options in downtown lol. Nonetheless, great food at a great price. My family will continue to come here for years to come :)

Very rude service, they do not seem to want customers in their store at all. They claim to have the best musubi in Hawaii.

It's a place where you can be yourself. I've come to value Pioneer Pantry for what it is. They've been here for 20 years and I'm just noticing for a month or so now in June 2026. I recently relocated jobs and now work in the downtown Honolulu area. After discovering Pioneer Pantry, I feel like its been a good thing to have when you're running late and didn't have breakfast. Its nice to come here and score some breakfast muffins or those bag of chips, or even cold drinks to have during drab office hours during the day. Pioneer Pantry functions like a 7-Eleven with an actual live kitchen in the back. Pioneer Pantry is a small functioning convenience store that carries most things that many people enjoy on a daily basis. On most mornings, I would enter the store running late to the office and stumble through here. I would pick up a couple of items and a cold drink and be on my way. I wasn't sure if the fountain drink machine was operational or not, so I just grabbed a cold bottle from one of their refrigerators. The prices here can be a bit more than other places, but I was in a rush - most days anyway. The overall experience here at the Pioneer Pantry is good and blessed that they are here. It's nice to have them here for those of us who are rushing to work and have this oasis on the way there for breakfast and other necessities. During the early morning though, they are open along with the Wiki Wiki Drive Inn before 8am. During the lunch hours, they are open along with the other restaurants in the Pioneer Plaza food court fully open for business. The ladies in the back of the store are very friendly and are awesome. Small business owners are amazing for sure. I try to stop by every day here to pick up something for breakfast. Knowing my schedule, I tend to sleep in and rush to work anyway and having Pioneer Pantry here to help is a big boost for me. Majority of my experiences here are happy ones and don't intend on changing. For the most part though, it's always nice to have this place here. While people have their Starbucks or McDonald's in the morning, I rely on Pioneer Pantry for my cold morning beverage of choice, which incidentally includes a cold soda with or without ice. Most people love hot or iced coffee to start their day. I prefer cold soda. Not healthy, but its my thing and it's pretty good. The Pioneer Pantry is located inside Pioneer Plaza building on the 1st floor food court. It's physically located at 900 Fort Street Mall in downtown Honolulu. They accept major credit cards as well as cash. It's next to the taco place and the Subway restaurant. As far as parking is concerned, best bet would be either street parking or paid parking garages nearby. If you are like me, public transportation is good and there's a bunch of bus routes that traverse thru the downtown corridor. Pick the ones that stop off at either Bishop Street or Fort Street Mall and walk on over. And of course, there's always Uber and Lyft and even Tauro, if you need their services. For now though, if you work or pass thru downtown Honolulu and don't like what the others are offering you, consider Pioneer Pantry at the Pioneer Plaza building. It's a nice trip here to grab something on the way to work every morning. Or a quick snack for lunch too. Its definitely a lifesaver when you're running late and you can support local businesses too. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Support local! A+

She is so personable and a joy to speak with. She offers inexpensive breakfast bentos featuring white or fried rice, a fried egg and pieces of Portuguese sausage, bacon or frankfurter. The meat varies. It used to sell for $3 but now costs $4.50 (I think). It's still a deal and the containers are great! (We use them to hold leftovers.) During lunch she sets up an array of entrees ... Honey Walnut shrimp, Beef with Vegetables, Meat Jun, Spicy Chicken, Choi Sum, Vegetable Pancake ... the selection varies by day and she offers two or three starches. A two-choice plate ($9.75) comes with a choice of white rice, fried rice or noodles. You have to go early; she can run out of food by 12:30pm. I usually choose one chicken dish and a vegetable with fried rice or noodles. A co-worker always gets the Honey-Walnut shrimp. It's hard to find a better deal in a plate lunch in downtown Honolulu. Her drinks are "the deal", $1.25, $1.50 and $1.75, for large, larger and humongous. Add in the personable service and you have a winner! Hey, stay away, we don't want any more competition for her food. Highly recommended!

Every time I walk inside, there's a strong, unpleasant odor that smells like sewage or fecal matter. It's consistent enough that it doesn't feel like a one-off issue--it's something you notice immediately when you enter the store. At times it seems stronger in certain areas, which makes me wonder if it's coming from plumbing, floor drains, or possibly even outside air getting pulled in. What's frustrating is that this location used to feel like one of the better-run stores on the island. Now, the overall impression is very different. Even if the shelves are stocked and the staff is doing their job, the environment itself really affects the experience of shopping there. What stands out is the comparison with nearby stores like Safeway, which don't seem to have the same issue, even though they serve the same general area. That contrast makes the problem at this location even more noticeable. I hope management takes a serious look at it, because this doesn't feel like a minor cleanliness issue--it feels like an infrastructure or maintenance problem that's been left unresolved for too long. It's a shame, because the store has a lot of potential and used to be a go-to spot.
