Love this store. It's one of my go to places for bi bim bap. The bi bim bap is a special order item that the mama makes in the back. Sauce is awesome. The daughter is at the cashier counter and is super friendly and sweet. Very easy to get addicted. Parking can be tricky downtown but there is a loading zone in front of the store and if you order ahead you can probably get in and out before getting a citation. If you work in downtown, this is a quick and convenient place to pick upsome Korean bentos or poke bowls. Just a tiny little market that serves take out. The poke bowls are pretty reasonably priced for how much you get, compared to other places on downtown. And the taste and spice of the spicy ahi is just right. They have a large selection of korean-type food choices available in take-out bentos. I've only had the mandoo so far (to eat with my poke), but I'm looking forward to trying the other items, like the kimbap! I have to try all the kimbap. Haha. read more

Happy Mini Mart isn't your typical Kwik-E-Mart convenience store. No rotating wieners, brain freezing squishiees, coffee sitting in pots for who knows how long, and etc. Instead, you'll find delicious, freshly prepared bentos, musubis, rice bowls, and many other Korean style delights. Of course, there's your typical convenience store items too. This little store is located across the Downtown US Post Office along Richard Street, next to Roots and Relics with many metered stalls nearby. Many of my co-workers recommended this place. I never went until recently, and I've been there many times! It's a great place to grab a quick snack and lunch. The first thing I got was a musubi. There's spam, spam with egg, hot dog, or hot dog with egg. I tried spam and hot dog with egg. The rice was prepared very well. It was moist and warm. The Spam was prepared close to its original taste. The hot dog was very good. Packed with sweet and soy flavor. Both were very good! $2.25 with egg, and $2 without. The omelette was good. It was cooked very well and maintained its moistness. Basic salty flavor with nice bits of spam, scallion, and carrots. The middle had seaweed, which was very good. $4.00, but I got it at $3.85! :) The Meat Jun Donburi was good. Nice, thin slices of tender and tasty beef that was battered and fried very well. Some Gochujang would've been perfect. $7.50 for this. Inari was good. Nicely cooked, flavorful rice in a tasty bean curd pocket. Overall, I'm sold on the food here. I'll definitely be coming back to try other items. They have a daily menu that changes everyday, so it's not a guarantee you'll get the same items I got. The ladies here are very friendly and very nice. The store is bright, clean, and organized with a nice variety of drinks. Coming to Happy Mini Mart definitely makes me happy! read more

This convenience shop is amazing for the selection of items they cram in a small space. But more importantly, it's their selection of pre-made bentos, musubis, and sandwiches that makes them stand out. All good tasting and cleanly packaged. Now I'm not working in the heart of downtown, so once in a great while my friend would offer to pick up lunch from town for me. She's another foodie person who likes to try new places and suggested this place! There's a mini mart across from the Downtown U.S. Post Office next to the golf shop, Roots and Relics. Many years ago I used to work in the area and even upstairs in the same building but never thought to have a mini mart serving delicious Korean food! Back then it was another business but what a great hidden gem Happy Mini Mart is! I would never have known about their yummy Korean food until my two friends raved on how reasonable yet tasty and how generous their portion was! For under $7-$8, you could get a pretty decent meal. Friend got me a mix combo bento of salmon and teri chicken and most recently, I stopped by and got a spicy pork bowl. Since I came by around 1:30pm, there weren't as many choices but you could also request to have made to order Kim chee ramen, bi-bim bap or even poke bowls! My friends like their bi bim bap. Spicy pork was not too spicy nor too sweet but just right! There's a good portion of meat vs rice and it comes with one mandoo, egg rolls and sweet pickled daikon (turnip). Great if you can walk from your office or drive & park in the metered parking lot fronting the post office. The meters are up until an hour at a time. Definitely have to be lucky to score parking during lunch time! The lady cashier was polite and they accept cash or charge payment. Who are the writers for this show? Did we hire those rejects from ABC's Caveman show? For reals though, Happy Mini Mart IS cheap eats in a town that's getting notorious for expensive lunches. Offering a variety of local, Japanese, and Korean style bowls and bentos ranging from donburi, chap chae vegetarian plates, kalua pig bowls, tempura/unagi, poke , meat jun, spicy chicken wings, curry, teriyaki chicken, to various styles of sushi including kim bap. Bentos range from $10 for the Unagi bowls, to $3.75 for the chap chae/tamago/Chinese cabbage vegetarian bento, with most of the chicken and pork bowls between $6 and $7. Their lunches are freshly made and tasty with a decent quantity of food and much healthier than the fast food lunches so many of us resort to. Happy Mart also offers breakfast bentos, along with the regular convenience store drinks, candy, musubi, gum, etc. So stop by this incredibly easy to find spot to grab a quick, healthy, affordable lunch. This place is probably one of the most hidden places in downtown to get some yummy food! My coworkers and I regularly go there to grab premade bentos. They also have a menu you can order from in the back as well :)! My favorites to get are - - Bibimbob (you have to order it in the back window) There's lots of veggies, meat and a whole egg! - Their meat jun bento, it has random sides depending on the day - I love their japchae! It's so good and not overly greasy. Just the perfect amount as well. The prices are reasonable (slightly on the cheaper side imo) for what you get and they have plenty of options to choose from but you have to go early otherwise it's kind to slim pickings for the day if you want a premade bento. read more

I've been coming here for the past 3 years. Their bentos are always delicious. For me, buying breakfast everyday can get pretty costly, that I started making my own and haven't been to Happy's in a long time. But today it was raining and thundering, and I hit the snooze button too many times. Needless to say I was running behind schedule. So I decided to be nice to myself and bought Kimchi Fried Rice! It's as amazing as I remember! Hot spicy kimchi fried rice with a soft egg and 2 slices of bacon. I really missed this breakfast bento. I've never done a review for a mini-mart but had to do one for this place. Happy Mini Mart is located on Richard Street in downtown Honolulu next to the Roots & Relics Golf Shop and across the Post Office. This is a small convenient store, however, they boast a wide array of breakfast bentos, including fried rice, pork sausage, Portuguese sausage, bacon , eggs and omelettes to name a few. For lunch they offer various bentos including kim chee fried rice, chicken katsu, meat jun, crab jun, curry, chup chae, and various bowls such as ahi poke, unagi, and Bi Bim Bap (some of my favorites). All of their bentos are very affordable, in the $5-$6 range, $7-$8 range for the bowls! Can you say "cheap eats"! :) If you are ever on the outskirt of downtown, but don't plan on or have the time to walk into the heart of downtown or Chinatown for a bite, this is a convenient place for a pickup. (Sorry, they don't have seating) Happy's also has a daily special on the whiteboard displayed in the window. Friendly people, good service and very accommodating. If they don't have a bento on display, just ask and they'll make one for you if they haven't run out. This is a convenience store with a kitchen in the back. They have a heated display of a variety of bentos, musubis, and snacks. There's also a window where you can place an order for poke bowls. They have a small table with just two seats if you want to enjoy your food there. Credit cards are accepted and you don't have to sign. The woman at the register is friendly. I got a meat jun bowl for lunch for $6.50. They also have breakfast bentos in the morning. Quick stop for breakfast bentos, snacks and drinks to hold me down during a fully booked work day! The unfortunate part is the location being in a spot that homeless frequent and use the bathroom on the sidewalk. The sidewalk can get really nasty which deters my appetite. This grab n go spot can't help that part but they do their best to make sure it's free of weirdos. Some street parking right out front but sometimes those are all taken. Sometimes, I am sooo lazy and just want to walk a block for lunch, and Happy Mini Mart is a life saver! Not only for lunch, but I often come here for a breakfast bento. Bentos are legit! Prices are fair. Owners are Korean and their bentos have Korean influence: spicy pork, meat jun, fish jun, chap chae... Mix that in with your local foods--katsu, donburi, etc. They will also throw in a small serving of kimchi at your request! Alas, not perfect here! No alcohol for sale! So, I come here EVERY time I go to the Richard's post office now. I've been here approximately 8 times since my first review (yes, I go to the post office a lot) and nothing has shaken the 5-star status for me. I've tried all sorts of artery-clogging goodness here. On Monday I had a tuna sandwich for breakfast here, today I had a loco moco for lunch (shoyu on my white rice and Tabasco on my egg-- YUM), and I'm so excited for what I'll be munching on tomorrow! I have to say that lunches are a little more than the breakfasts I've raved about. Breakfast is about $2.50 - $4.00 where lunch is about $4.00 - $6.00, but still great prices! Started working in the area around 4 years ago and this place has always been there for me. The breakfast bentos are so delightful and cheap. Where else can you get 4 different choices of meat and two eggs on a bed of rice for 5$? Just discovered the most delicious breakfast sandwich, egg/cheese/meat/vegetable omelet with two pieces of bacon(placed on top sandwich)between naan bread. OMG!! A one stop shop where you can pick up a quick or last minute sundry item, snacks, drink or even lunch. I stopped in to visit this mini mart the other day hoping to find myself my lunch. This place has an assortment of reasonably priced ready made breakfast and lunch bentos, sushi, donburi, musubi, fried noodles and gyoza. I ended up buying a chicken and gyoza bento with white rice for $5.95. The portions are just right but I was disappointed that my two pieces of crispy gyoza ended up being very soggy. I go here almost every day. SMH. I buy water and breakfast. The omelettes are really yummy and filling, but be warned...it is loaded with melted cheese on the inside. (For you lactose intolerants). The bentos are serves on either brown or white rice, and are priced between $3.49-$6.49. They have a variety of sundries and the establishment is clean for the most part. There was a day where I found what looked like a little piece of a green scrubber in the kim chee. Yuck. Some of the employees don't speak English too well, but they are nice and try to figure out wth you are saying. They also have daily specials for lunch, which are made to order and pretty reasonably priced. I like the kim chee tofu soup. It's very spicy and is served with a serving of rice. read more

I usually pick up a mini bento of fried zucchini or a spicy pork bowl from this little hole in the wall but they were out of both. So I ordered the spicy ahi bowl and I am very happy that I did. It's served in the same bowl they use for their ramen dishes, so it's slightly larger then their donburi bowl. For $7.50 you get a healthy serving of spicy ahi topped with fish roe and a dash of additional Shiracha sauce. The flavor is spot on and quality and the price are very competitive with other Downtown eateries serving similar fare. read more
