$8.99 yummy bento. Teri Chicken, salmon on cabbage, fish cake, mandoo, corn, gobo, takuwan, & egg roll.
    Donna O.

Now I'm not working in the heart of downtown, so once in a great while my friend would offer to pick up lunch from town for me. She's another foodie person who likes to try new places and suggested this place! There's a mini mart across from the Downtown U.S. Post Office next to the golf shop, Roots and Relics. Many years ago I used to work in the area and even upstairs in the same building but never thought to have a mini mart serving delicious Korean food! Back then it was another business but what a great hidden gem Happy Mini Mart is! I would never have known about their yummy Korean food until my two friends raved on how reasonable yet tasty and how generous their portion was! For under $7-$8, you could get a pretty decent meal. Friend got me a mix combo bento of salmon and teri chicken and most recently, I stopped by and got a spicy pork bowl. Since I came by around 1:30pm, there weren't as many choices but you could also request to have made to order Kim chee ramen, bi-bim bap or even poke bowls! My friends like their bi bim bap. Spicy pork was not too spicy nor too sweet but just right! There's a good portion of meat vs rice and it comes with one mandoo, egg rolls and sweet pickled daikon (turnip). Great if you can walk from your office or drive & park in the metered parking lot fronting the post office. The meters are up until an hour at a time. Definitely have to be lucky to score parking during lunch time! The lady cashier was polite and they accept cash or charge payment. My friends and I'm sure you would also be satisfied and HAPPY after enjoying their food from Happy Mini Mart! I did and I'm a happy customer! =) Thanks for reading my review! =)

    Lunch bentos

"On this episode of, 'Hidden Restaurant, Cheap Eats,'" Wait, wait, CUT THE TAPE! This isn't even slightly hidden. It's right on a busy street near to the downtown golf shop, Roots and Relics. Who are the writers for this show? Did we hire those rejects from ABC's Caveman show? For reals though, Happy Mini Mart IS cheap eats in a town that's getting notorious for expensive lunches. Offering a variety of local, Japanese, and Korean style bowls and bentos ranging from donburi, chap chae vegetarian plates, kalua pig bowls, tempura/unagi, poke , meat jun, spicy chicken wings, curry, teriyaki chicken, to various styles of sushi including kim bap. Bentos range from $10 for the Unagi bowls, to $3.75 for the chap chae/tamago/Chinese cabbage vegetarian bento, with most of the chicken and pork bowls between $6 and $7. Their lunches are freshly made and tasty with a decent quantity of food and much healthier than the fast food lunches so many of us resort to. Happy Mart also offers breakfast bentos, along with the regular convenience store drinks, candy, musubi, gum, etc. So stop by this incredibly easy to find spot to grab a quick, healthy, affordable lunch. Also please help us find better writers, or let us know where actual hidden spots are, because this one ain't.

If you're in the downtown area looking for cheap lunch, Happy Mini Mart is located across from the post office. It's a small place but filled with Korean bentos and takeouts. So far I tried their meat jun don buri and Korean sushi. Both of the items were $5/6. If you're looking for cheap eats with good taste this may the place for you.

A small convenient store that serve hot food breakfast and lunch. For breakfast they have small and medium grab and go breakfast bentos (spam, sausages, egg, omelette). They also have grab and go sandwiches and spam (and with egg) musubi. Their grab and go bento/bowls are also delicious. Spicy pork, Kalua pig, chicken bowls are my go to. Oh and their Bi Bim Bop, which comes with miso soup all for $10.00! Prices is a little on the higher side, since it's located in downtown, business district (outskirts) right across the post office.

I've been coming here for the past 3 years. Their bentos are always delicious. For me, buying breakfast everyday can get pretty costly, that I started making my own and haven't been to Happy's in a long time. But today it was raining and thundering, and I hit the snooze button too many times. Needless to say I was running behind schedule. So I decided to be nice to myself and bought Kimchi Fried Rice! It's as amazing as I remember! Hot spicy kimchi fried rice with a soft egg and 2 slices of bacon. I really missed this breakfast bento. Make sure to get there early as the kimchi fried rice is only available in the morning and sells out fast! It costs $5.50 w/tax.

I went to the post office downtown and saw so many people coming out of this mini mart in the morning. I decided to check it out and found out they sell bfast and lunch! I was really shocked. Great selection for such a great price!! I got the ham and mushroom omelette. Their fried rice looks amazing, so I would like to try that next time. I would love to try their lunch as I have heard manyy good things about it. This is such a great place to just pick up and go.

I've never done a review for a mini-mart but had to do one for this place. Happy Mini Mart is located on Richard Street in downtown Honolulu next to the Roots & Relics Golf Shop and across the Post Office. This is a small convenient store, however, they boast a wide array of breakfast bentos, including fried rice, pork sausage, Portuguese sausage, bacon , eggs and omelettes to name a few. For lunch they offer various bentos including kim chee fried rice, chicken katsu, meat jun, crab jun, curry, chup chae, and various bowls such as ahi poke, unagi, and Bi Bim Bap (some of my favorites). All of their bentos are very affordable, in the $5-$6 range, $7-$8 range for the bowls! Can you say "cheap eats"! :) If you are ever on the outskirt of downtown, but don't plan on or have the time to walk into the heart of downtown or Chinatown for a bite, this is a convenient place for a pickup. (Sorry, they don't have seating) Happy's also has a daily special on the whiteboard displayed in the window. Friendly people, good service and very accommodating. If they don't have a bento on display, just ask and they'll make one for you if they haven't run out. (I always ask if they still have chup chae in the back cause they seem to always run out quickly in front) There are metered on-street parking on Richard Street or across the street at the post office.

    Kimbap (aka Korean sushi)

I was pleasantly surprised at how simple but fresh and tasty the Korean sushi is at Happy Mini Mart in downtown. It's a small convenience store that is known for its affordable yummy Korean and local food. Definitely recommend!

She is so personable and a joy to speak with. She offers inexpensive breakfast bentos featuring white or fried rice, a fried egg and pieces of Portuguese sausage, bacon or frankfurter. The meat varies. It used to sell for $3 but now costs $4.50 (I think). It's still a deal and the containers are great! (We use them to hold leftovers.) During lunch she sets up an array of entrees ... Honey Walnut shrimp, Beef with Vegetables, Meat Jun, Spicy Chicken, Choi Sum, Vegetable Pancake ... the selection varies by day and she offers two or three starches. A two-choice plate ($9.75) comes with a choice of white rice, fried rice or noodles. You have to go early; she can run out of food by 12:30pm. I usually choose one chicken dish and a vegetable with fried rice or noodles. A co-worker always gets the Honey-Walnut shrimp. It's hard to find a better deal in a plate lunch in downtown Honolulu. Her drinks are "the deal", $1.25, $1.50 and $1.75, for large, larger and humongous. Add in the personable service and you have a winner! Located at Kukui Plaza tucked away in the back, you will have to walk pass few shops, to see the handwritten sign of " Best Musubi in Hawaii" posted on the door. Although there are bentos available & other goodies, I am mostly here for the delicious musubi. Why so good? My opinion, lets start with spam, perfectly cooked, with secret sauce, love the umami taste while I took my first bite, and the rice is hot & moist, not watery & not premium rice but it is still good, along with the nori. I loved everything about this musubi. Great spam to rice ratio. The only thing that I need is some of my chili spices! Mom & Pop is super friendly, I remember asking how many musubi's they sell a day and owner mentioned they make and sell over 100 a day. I usually park quick at the loading zone of Kukui Plaza, let the security know and walk over real quick to load up on my musubi(s). Don't forget cash only! Every time I walk inside, there's a strong, unpleasant odor that smells like sewage or fecal matter. It's consistent enough that it doesn't feel like a one-off issue--it's something you notice immediately when you enter the store. At times it seems stronger in certain areas, which makes me wonder if it's coming from plumbing, floor drains, or possibly even outside air getting pulled in. What's frustrating is that this location used to feel like one of the better-run stores on the island. Now, the overall impression is very different. Even if the shelves are stocked and the staff is doing their job, the environment itself really affects the experience of shopping there. What stands out is the comparison with nearby stores like Safeway, which don't seem to have the same issue, even though they serve the same general area. That contrast makes the problem at this location even more noticeable. I hope management takes a serious look at it, because this doesn't feel like a minor cleanliness issue--it feels like an infrastructure or maintenance problem that's been left unresolved for too long. It's a shame, because the store has a lot of potential and used to be a go-to spot.
