Safety Locksmith is okay if you are the only customer needing assistance. If they would put prices on the merchandise I wouldn't need help every time I visit. I was doing a good deed today for a friend looking for a mop head. There were so many customers waiting I left after taking a photo of the various mop heads. I told my friend he could call for the price of the one he wants. I'm lowering the stars to three. They are the only hardware store left in my hood. While I would not give this store the highest marks for good cheer, if you need some arcane thing or other for a fix, they will probably have it. They also have all the regular stuff. The prices are good and the advice is better. If you're in the hood [Just north of East 86 Street on Second Ave.] it is the best destination,1713 2nd Ave. read more

Mediocre and absurdly overpriced. They hide the prices on items and charge 5x Amazon.

Bought a heavy duty extension cord for $32. Cash. Went to return it 2 hours later still in the original package and was told that store credit was all they would do. So I had to cobble together some overpriced items to use up the store credit. In the age of Amazon, this is the kind of policy that costs you in the long run. I have two keys which I had gone to other stories hardware store to make copies of they made them and then work took him back make modifications and failure again I walked into this safety locksmith and hardware store and he figured out at one he needed a met at a special master key and the other key needed to be duplicated with a special device in the machine. He made duplicates and they both work so if you need it to make copies of keys, safety, locksmith and hardware is a place to go. read more

I stood outside the door at 658 and the guy came and opened for me, listened to my sob story about another place making my key wrong and almost broke my door, made me a new key, and said I could come back another time to pay because I didn't have cash. read more

Reading the yelp reviews now as it relates to keys, is accurate. I called him and described my double-cut key exactly to its specs. He said it would be about 7.99. I called back before going over and he didn't want to confirm the price. When I got there, he wanted to know how many I wanted. I asked how much he wanted for each. He said $85. I said, what? that's ridiculous. He said it would take two hours. It's a double-cut key, no microchip. It's a 5 minute job for someone. I'll never go back. I really don't trust him. read more

No, they weren't friendly, and the guy was actually smoking a cigarette in the store, and it was $6 per key... But they stayed open late for me when I called and begged, and they were able to replicate my keys within 2 min- when all the other locksmiths said my key would have to be custom ordered. TERRIBLE SERVICE!! Go to another hardware store around block. Three employees including what seemed like owner standing around doing absolutely nothing and refuse to be of any assistance and are man behind cash register is incredibly rude and useless. Guy that worked there wasn't very friendly. He did a decent job on my keys when making copies but other than that wasn't anything amazing to write home about. Not saying that they have to be the friendliest person in the world, but a little bit goes a long way. Either way, it was convenient for proximity. I came in to get a bench scraper and a utility knife to install wallpaper. When I asked one of the employees to check the price on the utility knife some other employee comes over and rudely asks what I plan to use it for. I told him to install wallpaper and he said "Are you sure you aren't going to cut anyone with this?" I know for a fact that he racially profiled me. I was so disgusted with the question I told him I wouldn't be purchasing either item. He tried to backpedal and say he asks everyone that and that he would need to check my id for the purchase and that was standard. What a joke. I'm certain that he thought he was being funny, but that kind of nonsense is unacceptable. I will find somewhere else to spend my money. Scoundrels! I brought a briefcase in to repair the lock. Was told it would cost $25. Went back to pick it up, now $45! AND THEY BROKE THE LOCK!!! One of the employees told me I should have taken the briefcase to a luggage store. They offered to try to repair the lock for $45 - but I'd have to pay the $45 regardless of whether or not they could fix it. "Hocus Pokus," sorry we couldn't fix it. Right, like I'd fall for this scam after they broke the lock and tried to overcharge me! Piece de resistance: they charged my credit card without my awareness. Don't go here! You will get screwed! I used their emergency service to come to my apartment on a Sunday to change my entry door's lock. They pulled a fast one on me and I know I got gipped. They said they had to replace the entire lock and that's the law in NewYork. I kept telling them that I only wanted to rekey and they said that's not how it's done here. They wanted $125 for Sunday service call if I was to send them away. $600 dollars later they were gone. I'm still upset how there are so many dishonest people in business. I had found them through yelp and I'm writing in yelp so no one else ends up in my place. read more

Terribly rude, tell you $90 for an emergency lockout, then spring an extra $65 on you when you get there or leave you without a lock, and if you don't pay it they'll still charge you the $90 for the trip. Will never use this slimey company again. read more

I definitely get it, they are not the type who say "good morning" or " thanks for coming by" but each time I have needed assistance from changing my locks to catching a mouse (yuck) they have been great. The more I go the nicer they are. There are a few other hardware stores in the area so if you are looking for warm and fuzzy find somewhere else. If you are like me and don't really give a crap then this is the place to go, they pretty much have everything you need. read more

I went to get key made here once and the guy behind the counter was so rude. First he exclaimed "You're really gonna make me do this today??" The guy working at the locksmith was literally angry at me for asking him to make me a key. Then he said it would be $25. I left and and went straight to another locksmith that charged me $13 for the same key. Avoid this place at all cost! read more

Awful - believe the one star reviews (90% of them). I went here out of convenience to copy one key to help my friend and the guy kept saying "5.99 one or two?" Making it sound like it would be the same price for one or two keys. I asked "Same price for one or two?" twice (!) and he answered yes twice (!), so I said ok, two... Then he rang me up for the price of two at $13 (a way-overcharge, I'm sure), then started yelling at me. Two people yelling at me, actually - in less than a minute, on my way to work... There's a place called CBS Locksmith one over I used before which appears to still be there. Avoid this place - doing it on my own time I probably would *not* have chosen a place on Second Ave - having lived in the area for 4 years it's very observable how the presence of the Q has strained business particularly on 2nd, turning them out of business quickly and inviting gaudier businesses in general. Walking into this place was as bad as that idea could suggest - I brought in no attitude or dishonestly and left very uncomfortable. They overcharged me for keys. I had a basic Schlage key to be copied which should not cost more than $2.50 and they charged me 4.95. On my receipt they wrote security key. I asked a more reputable locksmith what they would charge to make the same copy and they said it would be $1.95. read more

I would give this place a zero if I could! Quite possibly the most cheat worthy, terrible customer service anywhere. I've lived in this neighborhood for 20 years and have off and on gone into this shop. They've always been overpriced (never put a price on anything so you have to guess what you'll be charged) and try to snatch a couple bucks here and there from their clientele, which normally isn't a big deal to me since I like to support local businesses. This last experience was the final nail in the coffin for me. There's no reason this place will be around with all the other great hardware shops and much better customer service so close by. The guy charges you based on how helpless your circumstances are.... literally! If you need a locksmith and your locked out... forget it... he will rip you off! Even if he knows you.... I walk into the store and he's yelling at an old lady because he refuses to issue her a refund. Who does that?? I had a key that had broke. It had literally snapped because it was bent. I just needed the key replaced. Normally a 3 dollar charge to get a key replacement. They use a machine just like anywhere else. He looks at me and says 10 dollars because it's a "hard" job. I know it's only 10 bucks... but this is the typical way he treats someone that comes into a store for 20 years. Lol. I reluctantly agree and less than 3 minutes later he hands me a key. Such hard work. Lol. I mumble that I still can't believe he triple charged me after such "hard" work and he goes off yelling at me in front of my daughter.... customers... everyone. Had my daughter not been there, I would have gone off on him. I walked out and went to Wankel's on 89th and 3rd. Amazing customer service. Fixed my key for $3.49 and did it with a smile on their face. He's lost my business and anyone else I know in the neighborhood I can tell. That's what happens. Terrible... terrible place. read more

NEVER USE THEM, THEY ARE THIEVES. I needed my door unlocked. Not only did they destroy the lock, so that they can charge me for the reinstallation of a lock, they also PURPOSELY destroyed the threading, so that only a professional can fix it and that they can charge that fee as well. read more

I wish I could choose zero stars. Terrible business practices. I went in to purchase a product- brought an example of exactly what I needed- asked over and over if they were selling me the same product. I was promised it was the same product. Well I came home and it was not. I went to return it and they would not give me my money back claiming that their system does not allow refunds. They did give me a store credit, but I do not shop in hardware stores and will never have a use for this credit. This was clearly completely unethical considering I brought in an example of the product I needed and the owner even said he remembered me coming in. What kind of sham business is this? NEVER SHOP HERE THEY WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY! You are better off shopping on Amazon where every product is 50% cheaper anyway. read more
