If you need actual hardware, this is a good place to go. Bolts, washers, tiny metal pieces - they're good for that. Anything else will be 3x the price it should be. 1 cheaply made fabric laundry bag - $7. Pack of 3 xxlarge ziploc bags - $20 (yes, you read that right). Upon walking in, I saw 2 older gentlemen talking near the entrance (both in polos) and they greeted me. I meandered for a bit, then needed assistance making keys so I went back to find an employee. I asked one of the men who had just said hello if he could help. He was leaning against the cashier counter now, with his belly exposed, running his hand over his chest and stomach in a relaxed manner. He said he did not work there and couldn't help me. Maybe he's just a friend who hangs out there, but it was weird. I got 3 keys made (regular old keys, nothing fancy) for $6.50. There was a line at the cashier but I had cash so I didn't wait. The key maker told me I could come back if the keys didn't work, but thankfully all 3 did. He also included a key ring with it (regularly 25 cents). This was about $1 cheaper in total than a smaller hardware store 1 block away. read more

This is my go-to hardware store in the neighborhood. As the other reviewers have said, the customer service is fantastic! I've been a customer of theirs for years (I used to shop at their old location) and I've only had positive experiences. One of the things I love about the staff is that they never try to "upsell" you. I wanted to give a special shout out to Steve today. He is super knowledgeable and definitely knows his inventory! I love this neighborhood hardware story! The owner/manager is usually in the store when you go in, he is super knowledgeable about everything. Every time I've gone I can just describe what I'm trying to fix and he'll hopefully point out and take me to what I need as well as explain how to actually fix it (because let's face it some times YouTube video just aren't as helpful as you need them to be). Bonus #1: the owner is super honest and helpful to customers. The other day I went in looking for an expensive tool (which YouTube told me I needed), but when I described my home DIY issue the store owner told me that that tool actually wasn't the best solution, and pointed me to the right solution which was actually far cheaper. All this when the man could have easily sold me the more expensive tool and I'd have been none the wiser. Bonus #2: support small local business! TLDR. The gentleman at the store is rude ,condescending and doesn't give a s*** about his customers/ potential customers. I walk by the area a lot and was excited to see a hardware store since I have been meaning to pick up a few things. I asked to know where the extension cords were. The gentleman directed me towards it. Then followed series of condescending questions. I KNOW what I'm looking for, but the way he phrased his questions and his answers should be how someone at a store would speak to their customers. As I tried to brush it off, he went to take a phone call. From my understanding, it was a potential customer asking when the store will close. After hanging up the call he made a comment to a customer checking out. "Why will you continue to talk to me on the phone asking when I will close (something along the lines of) they are going to come and spend a couple of bucks anyways." This is a hardware store with a great sense of community, brought to life through its manager and staff. A bag I had with important documents went missing while walking from the 42nd & Lex subway station. After retracing my steps to see if I may have inadvertently dropped it, I gave it up as gone. Several days later, I received a surprise call from Midtown Hardware, saying that someone had left the documents folded up in the stores' display stand and that they would hold them for me until I could get there - I was stunned! Visited Midtown Hardware on a Saturday morning for a new MR16 halogen flood light bulb after an unfortunate attempt at replacing a kitchen track light failed miserably. Having walked past four closed hardware stores before finally smartening up and calling ahead (thank goodness to the advent of the smartphone!), this was the nearest open shop I could locate before giving up and hitting the 59th St Home Depot. Small, basic hardware shop, one story. Two friendly fellows manning the counter. Decent selection of most often used tools and parts, but fortunately had the bulb I was seeking. Prices are generally a bit higher than the big bad home centers, but given the prime location, this was expected. read more

I got key copies made here, and it was great: 1. Quick (~5 mins) 2. Cheap (literally $6.50 for 3 key copies made) 3. Good quality (keys work haha..and look lots shinier than the old ones!) They also had neat .75 cent colorful keychains where you could write your name and phone number (super useful! wish I got one). The people here are great! I purchased a 20lb dry-erase board for my cubicle (not a good choice, admittedly) and brought it here trying to figure out what to buy so I could somehow hang it without a catastrophe. One of the guys pondered for while and came up with the ingenious solution of putting a screw in backwards and affixing it to the hardware to hang it using a hex nut. And then he did it for me! So if you ever have a horrible idea, come here and they'll figure out a way to engineer around your stupidity. read more

Was perfect for a set of keys and close by work! My friend was staying with me for an extended period of time and I needed to make a copy of my keys. I went here during lunch hour and they quickly were able to accommodate me. The keys took about 1 min to copy and they assured me if they did not work I could come back again for another try. Luckily they worked and not complaints. It also cost under $4 for 2 keys so can't complain about that! read more

If you are in midtown east and need to pick up something from a hardware store, but don't necessarily feel like hoofing it to Home Depot, just stop here unless you are undertaking a major project ofcourse. Their prices are probably 20% higher and they don't seem to take kindly to returns based on signs I've seen, but it could be the difference between quickly picking up what you need or making it a day project just to get materials. I've stopped here for window insulation kits, bulbs, keys, you name it. Because the store is smaller, it's also easier to manage than a warehouse when trying to find a specific item. My bed frame worked so I was looking for a cost effective solution to hold up the bed. The owner took to blocks of wood and screwed them together to be a temporary fix and did not charge me a dime. I had keys made here on my lunch break, and the customer service was great. I was in and out of the store in less than 5 mins and they had the key I needed. After being told another store didn't carry the key, I was worried- but these guys had it and were quick. a true value hardware store that just moved to a bigger location on 2nd ave between 44th and 43rd st . you may walk pass this place without noticing it as its away from the sidewalk nestled with limited signage . i did notice it and needed some keys copied pronto. a full service hardware shop with the basic a to z products with the typical manhattan high prices which you might pay if going to home depot is too far or time is not able to be spared . while the guy was making the keys i walked around a bit and place is nicely organized and the shelves are fully stocked . a few items thats on sale via the weekly flyer are not something i can use now but maybe nexts week sale might . the keys are ready and i paid about 3 bucks more compared to my bronx locksmith but the keys all work and thats good enough for me. overall a decent hardware store that i will visit again if i need something right away and if going to home depot is too might of a hassle . read more

I continued to silently inspect my one light option while the woman at the counter offered up "and there's no returns! if they don't work when you get home - they are yours!" Um, OK. I work on 44th and 5th. I lost the key to my desk, and the back up key for my co-worker's desk somewhere between the office and home... We struggled thru 2 days of her opening and locking my desk while I went on a hunt through the car, the house, the neighborhood.....no luck. Today at lunch I googled up a place to get keys made and found on Yelp Midtown Hardware, read the reviews, and "ran" the 5 or so blocks on my lunch hour to have another set made. At first the guy looks at one of the keys and say "hmmmm, not this one"...."Oh Please, I said, it's just for a desk, I know it has a fancy looking handle on it, but can't you try?"....welll....he searched and searched and came up with a blank that would work.......MY HERO!!!! I had keys made four days ago and unfortunately none of them worked. I had to come back twice to have the keys remade and still none worked. The third time, the owner offered to refund my money although the store's policy does not provide for a refund. I was pleasantly surprised and felt I had to thank them by writing this review. .Having said that, for key duplicates you better go to Basics Plus Hardware it's a little bit more expensive but works all the time. read more
