So, yesterday I went to have keys made here. The gentleman working seemed inconvenienced by my request and told me it would take a very long time to make. He suggested I get them the next day. I explained that my daughter's bag was stolen, with her keys and had to change locks so needed them right away. I said I could go somewhere else to have the keys made it was too much trouble. He said he would make them but not as many sets as I requested. I agreed and said I was running to another store quickly and would be back. I returned a 15 minutes later (figured I had that time since he told me it was going to take a VERY LONG TIME to make). To my surprise, when I returned, the store was closed, no one in sight. I did not know they were closing because they used to be open until 6 or 7pm, but when I looked at the door. The sign said 5pm. Yikes. My bad. People have a right to change their hours, I understand, but they could have explained that they were closing, they could have told me that they were unable to make the keys, and I could have gone somewhere else or better yet, they could have waited 15 minutes for me to return because one could deduce that if I hand my keys over and then you have my keys until the next day that I might be locked out! On top of this, I returned to retrieve the keys at 8:00am which is what their posted hours stated, and no one came to open the store until 8:30am. So, while it was so important for them to adhere to their closing hours, apparently opening 30 minutes is not big deal. I manage a business and I treat a customer who comes in 1 minute to close the same way I treat the other customers because that is good customer service and what ultimately keeps our business thriving.
I have been shopping at this hardware store for 15 years, but Washington Heights is not short on Hardware stores. Additionally, I had been noticing that their customer service did seem to be going down over the years (seemed to have happened when they transitioned to the bigger space after Vims closed) but this was just bad business. read more
