This is no Home Depot, but Westside is a solid neighborhood hardware store. I have been in here for a variety of things from flypaper to adjustable wrenches and they seem to have it all. The prices are good, too. My only complaint is that the shelves are packed so tight and to the ceiling, that it is sometimes hard to find what you are looking for. That said, they do have a helpful staff, ready to march you down those narrow, crowded aisles, to get you to what you need. read more

This was my go-to hardware store when I worked in Midtown (mostly for convenience reasons). If you're doing work on your apartment then odds are they'll have what you need. In particular their selection of 3M velcro strips is great for hanging things up without damaging the wall. There is so much stuff in here though that the main problem here is finding things. The store is not clearly organized at all so you typically need to ask someone where to find things. Doesn't make things quick and easy if you're just trying to grab something. Prices are reasonable for most items which is good. I haven't talked to anyone about advice using an item as I haven't needed to. Guys who work here in the aisles are always friendly though, unlike the guys behind the counter who always seem to have a stick up their butts. Regardless the positives outweigh the negatives, and the selection and pricing alone makes this place worth it. read more

Consumables such as cleaning productsand toilet paper as well as kitchen supples and hardware tools. A nice quick stop if you are looking for everyday items. When it gets busy service lacks a bit but i've been there when few people were in the store and the service was great. Keys are made here as well. Westside Home Center is a good hardware with great customer service. I ordered Locksmith services through them. A locksmith came, but he was more of a handy man trying figure out how to replace the cylinder in my lock. Long story short, the guy spent 1.5 hrs and screwed up replacing the cylinder big-time. The door lock was completely broken. I spoke with Mansoor from Westside Home Center and he was very apologetic and sent another locksmith who was a true professional - Ben. He replaced the lock in less than 30 minutes. The charges were 300$. However, Westside Home Center covered the charges minus $40 for the inconvenience. Despite all the suitcases chained up outside, this is not a luggage S&M shop. This place seems to have just about everything, though a lot of it is way up above your head, so keep looking up. This is my one-stop-shop for pretty much anything metal (screws, nails, mounting brackets, etc), and has a little corner of gardening materials to fuel my 'oh crap, i haven't touched dirt since i moved to Manhattan' container gardening binge. They've got cleaning supplies and such too, but i've yet to do some on-the-fly price comparison with Duane Reade. They even have the telescoping light bulb changing poles that i couldn't find anywhere and ended up ordering online and being annoying because DHL apparently used it as a doorstop or something on the way. Of course, i didn't find out that i could buy them at the corner hardware store until after braving the internet, and this is due to the fact that not only are they hung well above eye level, but also in a corner completely hidden by other goods. I found them by accident the other day while searching for mounting brackets (which are in another corner, mostly hidden by other goods). So the moral of the story is: if you can't find it, ask. They probably have whatever you're looking for, but given the tiny square footage of the store, it might be hidden or stapled to the ceiling or something. And the one star i'm deducting is because of the sketchy guys that sometimes hang out near the register conversing sketchily with the slightly sketchy employees in a language i don't understand. For all i know they're discussing what to get for dinner, but the vibe is always... well, sketchy. read more

There may or may not be some shady business going on here, but it may have just been my bad luck/when I happened to walk in. The person before me was arguing with the person over the counter about having paid for something, but someone else took the bill and there was some kind of miscommunication--whatever, I didn't think much of it. So I had called beforehand and asked how much it is to get a key copied. The person on the phone said 1.50. I got some keys copied, and as I was swiping my credit card, I realized that the total was a bit high. I asked them how much the keys were, and he said 1.79. I mentioned that the person on the phone said they were 1.50, then he replied saying they "raised their prices two days ago." I didn't start an argument, as I wasn't going to haggle over the 29 cent difference, but even if they had increased their prices recently, maybe they should have informed their entire staff before giving out wrong information. This is my all-time FAVORITE store EVER. I have been coming to this unbelievable emporium for many years. I actually look forward to dropping in to "my" neighborhood hardware store for the humdrum items every apartment dweller needs - like picture-hanging hardware, glue, twine, hardware floor products, rust remover..... but once i find the boring stuff I came for, the adventure begins! Cleaning products that I've never heard of proclaim miracles - and shit - they really are magical. I've often been inspired to commence apartment-wide DIY projects because of some nearly hidden products hanging from the ceiling or stashed behind kitchen wares. One such project was to hide or camouflage all the damn cables and electrical cords I had running in every room. I came across some cable-hiding kits here, and I was soon obsessed with the ingenious plastic tubing that covered the cords and cables but could be painted the same color as the walls in my apartment - thus making the miles of electrical cabling invisible! Lol. The guys who work here are awesome. Smart, hot, and good-hearted to a fault. There are quite a few reviews that mention the staff being glued to their mobile phones, but I swear, hand-to-God, I've never seen a single staff member use a cell phone at the store - they are too goddam busy working; cleaning, putting out new inventory of top-shelf electrical tools, all the while restocking the shelves with the never-ending demand for Mr. Clean Magic Erasers and Tide laundry detergent at bargain- basement prices, and patiently and carefully explaining complex repair procedures to New Yorkers who have never even seen a hammer but are desperate to repair the giant depression in the wall that mysteriously appeared at last night's Birthday and Vodka Party!! Went into this place super hungover because my girlfriend's friend clogged my toilet...I had a good laugh with one of the sales guys here about this and he directed me to the "heavy duty" plunger, which did the job. When I first moved to the city, I lived just 3 blocks away and did not realize I would not have a hardware store like this in every neighborhood in New York. Now, anytime I am in Hells Kitchen, I make a point to remember if I have any errands that require a run to a hardware. These guys are great. The store is well stocked. Often when I had a problem, I could describe it and they could come up with the solution for me on the spot and have the products I needed in stock. I recently found myself waiting indefinitely for a property owner to solve a problem (if I corrected it myself to make conditions livable in a permanent manner, it would have cost $300-400) and made a trip to Westside and in only a moment, I was presented with a temporary solution to my problem that would cost me under $15 while I await the property owner. read more

Westside Home Center is what you envision a typical NYC neighborhood hardware store. I'm not sure why I don't come here more often since I live so close by. Oh yeah, I remember. I'm not very handy. Besides, they're closed in the evenings on weekdays when I think I need some nuts and bolts. OK, Living in NYC you don't have to be all that handy most of us live in apts owned by evil landlords ( :) ) It's nice to know Westside is here to meet my handyman needs. The staff here have the typical NYC laissez-faire attitude. Kind-of what you expect in NYC. They are not very knowledgeably about typical handyman needs... well I guess they really don't have to be... I've concluded this is more like a self-service hardware store. Clearly not as big as the discount supply like Home Depot. But it will do... Oh yes! They make keys.... probably the cheapest around town... I just moved in down the street, and came here Friday morning to make some copies of keys to my apartment. The copies seemed a bit on the expensive side (14.99 for one multi-lock key), but I didn't really shop around so I could definitely be wrong on typical pricing. Service was quick, but not especially friendly. Outside the realm of keys, it seems like this place has everything you could possibly imagine, especially given how small it is. When I moved to Hells Kitchen two years ago, my apartment was what you might call a fixer-upper. I literally lived down the street from Westside, so I became a frequent face and a quite annoying customer. I'm the opposite of handy (I guess clumsy and accident-prone describe me better), so I'd always need extra guidance when I came in to begin a project. The guys working here helped me through every time. Their patience and expertise was quite astounding, as they would ask me what I needed to get done, and then help me find the different parts and tools I would need to do it. Because of them, I have gorgeous under cabinet lights installed, I built my own bookshelf, I've re-routed electric wires, and I've had many a key copied! Westside is a great resource for all your hardware needs. And because it's hardware, you'll probably enter with that stressed out I-have-a-task-to-accomplish look on your face, but, like I do after being taken care of by the staff here, you'll leave with a relieved smile. This shitty corner store is one of those places you walk by and wonder how they're in business, but when you finally decide to check it out, you'll wildly surprised at how useful it actually is! Not only do they have Locksmith services, but they have a great selection of electrical supplies, among many other household items. They also have a large selection of cleaning supplies at very good prices! This place is great! They seriously have so much stuff... I was incredibly impressed because it didn't seem that large. It is jam packed though as a result. Prices are pretty decent. It's along the lines of what I'd expect in NYC. I'm okay with it bc I don't have to drive or travel anywhere too out of the way. What I really really liked about this place was how nice everyone is. The guys that worked there, seem quite young, but they're very sweet and helpful. Also, pretty knowledgeable. Restoring faith in today's youth O.o For reals though. One day one of the guys refused to get off the phone when I had several questions to ask and acted as if I was simply an interruption in his day. Really rude. My roommate and I really needed a window AC. Being two girls who living in a fifth floor walk-up, we decided we need someone who knew what they were doing to install one for us. After calling and getting quotes from several places (and finding out it would be DAYS or WEEKS before any of them could install), we decided to walk over to Westside Home Center. Being a small hardware store, their prices aren't nearly as good as the bigger stores... however, since delivery was free, installation was cheap, and they could do a same-day installation... we decided to buy our A/C there. Updated review. I had already given them 5 stars months ago, mainly for their awesome key duplication service. Recently I had to install some window treatments, and had to come here for supplies such as drills, anchors, and drill bits. I have got to say the guys who work here have been extremely helpful, providing advice and helping pick the right equipment. During the installation I noticed the window measuring company had actually messed up, and the ordered window tracks were half an inch too large to fit. I came to the store for help to maybe get a hacksaw and clamps etc to cut the track; but the guys were willing to just help cut the track for me as a favor, and then refused payment for it. From all this recent good experience, I feel safe to conclude the guys here are just generally good human beings, and one can come here with full confidence you are dealing with a friendly, helpful, and trustworthy neighborhood shop.
