This is my local hardware store and the staff are always extraordinarily friendly and helpful. I walked in yesterday and asked how to remove an old safety gate from my window. They told me to come back the next day (today) and without hesitation, they sent someone over to help me out. For something I expected to pay hundreds for, they gave me an incredible deal for the work they did. It seems that this hardware store, which is now a Benjamin Moore store, was known before as Nunez Hardware. I work at the CUMC a few blocks from here, and I've come to this store a few times. It is one of the best stocked in the neighborhood, not just for paints, but for general hardware and electrical supplies too. Today, for example, I needed a light bulb. Not any kind of light bulb, but specifically a Sylvania Par20 50W halogen bulb. I tried a couple of hardware store in the neighborhood, but I finally found the light bulb only at this place. Not only, but at $5.99 it is actually cheaper than what you would play for it on the internet. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, which is always a plus. read more

I found them very friendly and professional. Called around to other local hardware/lumber stores to have a large piece of wood cut that I was re-purposing. HomeDepot and Lowes wouldn't make the cuts of course because I wasn't buying the wood from them. NHS or something, another local store quoted me a ridiculous rate of $5.00 per cut. Nunez gets it. They charged just $1.00 per cut. Friendly staff got it done in less than 5 minutes. Will shop there for other items because of this experience. read more

Thought I'd update everyone on the key copy front. The normal, regular sized keys are still $1 per piece, per what moonflower said on 04/30/2012. I also got a medeco assa abloy key copied for $4; don't know if that's good or not, just putting that out there. Aisles are small and tight and everyone in there is speaking Spanish, but it's speedy and nice, and there's no minimum on the credit card? Love it. The store actually reads Benjamin Moore really huge out front and Nunez is this tiny thang; I actually thought the store closed after all. read more

The guys are nice and the prices are fine but do not copy your keys here. They have made faulty copies on me twice. After they let me return the previous key but messed up the new one it was not worth returning. Other products are great and well organized. Bilingual staff. Just don't make keys here. read more

Not a bad neighborhood hardware, though not gigantic. Fine for quick trips and the -oh sh*t i forgot ___ - moment that always happens in the middle of home stuff. Not good for lumber or anything not fairly ordinary, but you wouldn't expect them to be. (If you want serious stuff, go to metropolitan hardware in the way west 40s). For basic everyday stuff, they're good. The staff are helpful and nice, and if you need multilock keys cut, they'll do them, which is handy. read more

Nunez hardware employees were kind and helpful. When I didn't have the full amount available, price was 2.50, I only had 1.50, they allowed me to still make the purchase. Definitely suggest them as they were very helpful and understanding. read more

Really hate to write a negative update on any business, but can't avoid it here. The Nunez Hardware I always knew was a friendly family place. Now, I feel as if my visits interrupt the socializing in the store. I went in and bought a coffee pot and the guy behind the register literally didn't say a word to me throughout the entire transaction, make eye contact, or even grumble the NYC de facto "thank you." (Even though I said hello.) Not tragic, but not a place I'll give my money too much in the future, when I can get better merchandise elsewhere. read more

Located right by the GWB, this was the perfect place to get some keys made before I had to go out to Fair Lawn, NJ. Prompt, efficient service, and only a dollar to get a key made. Can't beat it. read more

Not sure what has happened over the past couple of years. But service has gotten really apathetic. Was there a change in ownership or management? The people working there seem like they'd rather be elsewhere. I hate to write negative reviews, especially for a small neighborhood business. But the owners need to know what's going on for change to occur. As this is the closest hardware store to where I live, I'd rather go there. But until service improves I'll be taking my business elsewhere for now. read more

This is a great place to go for almost anything household. They know what they're doing and are very honest. My most recent visit was for AC installation, even though I didn't purchase the unit there they still sent someone to my house and supplied me with everything I would need- both for a very reasonable price. Also, quick and efficient. Highly recommend if you live in the Washington Heights area. read more

I've lived in Washington Heights for 7 years (!) and am a big supporter of local businesses. But, they also need to "make the cut" and Nunez does that every time. Most recently, I and a friend went there to get hardware bits to install a ceiling light. These buildings up here are 80 years old or more.... so installing modern anything can be tricky. The staff were super helpful, patient, and able to miraculously piece together a series of lamp hardware that got the new fixture to work with the old ceiling hardware. Refunds or exchanges are never a problem. Forget Home Depot. Make Nunez tour go-to hardware store. read more

The service here is terrible. I bought a blender here that was terribly defective (as in, started to smoke when I turned it on). When I tried to return it, they put up such a fight before refunding me for an obviously faulty piece of equipment, and I had to come back 2 or 3 times until they a manager would allow a refund. read more

I was able to get 4 keys copied for $13. I got 3 regular keys for a dollar each and one Medeco key for $10. When I returned to my apartment, the Medeco did not work. I was concerned they would not make me another key or even get my money back since I didn't get a receipt. But I went right back and the guy took one look at the two keys and instantly saw his mistake and cut me another key that did work. Most everyone there speaks Spanish but they are very willing to help you and find someone that speaks English if you need it. read more

They made me a set of keys very quickly and charged half the price I would have paid at one of the new generation of startup key makers. They were honest and helpful too and tried to help me save money by figuring out how many keys my brother-in-law needed to get in as opposed to how many I needed including laundry and mail, etc. I think a lot of people don't realize (as I didn't) that it's usually safe to assume you can get keys made for cheap on the spot at a hardware store, even if the hardware store website is basic and doesn't mention anything about keys. So if you are paying $3.50 per key at a fancy new key place for regular doorknob and deadbolt keys to your apartment door, that is at least double what you should be paying. read more
