I give Garber's Hardware four stars even though I find nothing negative about it. I went there yesterday on January 4, 2025 to get replacement screws for my computer office chair and the owner checked and found 'em. Cost was a very reasonable $3.45 for four screws! Got what I wanted - a small, cheap, accurate thermometer that is suited for indicating the temperature in my apartment ... (so I know whether the landlord is sending the right amount of heat up). Not just that - it is a veritable antique : an object with a wood frame, a glass tube with mercury in it, .... and that's it! No batteries (requiring replacement), no inessential electronic gadgetry (radiating electromagnetic pollution) - just the basics : like, "What is the temperature here now? read more

I was sad when our Russian hardware store up the street, closed a few years ago, but we switched to Garber and everyone was nice and helpful, they had a good supply of things, so Garber became our new hardware store. Well, I just came returned from there. One employee was so rude to me - actually went out of his way to be rude - that I will never go back. He seems to be new; at least I haven't seen him before. They are renovating, so maybe it is under new management that doesn't care about hiring staff who have communication skills and follow common courtesies. This is a sad but true business lesson: customers don't like to be put down by surly employees; it doesn't matter how good your products are or how many great experiences the customer has had in the past. I will find a new hardware store where they treat people with civility. read more

Lots of things to buy here, but when I asked for a C-wrench the worker gives me the line, "if we have one it's over there." Meaning "it's not there and I'm getting the short end from my boss" which is why I'm leaving the review. No C-wrench to be had for love or money. Bottom line: unhelpful staff, and surprisingly incomplete inventory. read more

He truly saved the day! I called five other hardware stores and no one cared enough to ask the right questions to help me. His qualifying questions and thoroughness were great examples of good customer service and good best business practices of showing caring and kindness!! I had a stripped screw and came in to get it fixed, one of their employees had it out in a matter of a minute. I asked him how much and he refused payment. I can't recommend Garber enough, so helpful and polite. I really cant find enough good things to say about this store! read more

Came here because we needed help putting a table together. Employees were super helpful, assembled the parts we couldn't do on our own, and set us up to finish the project. Great new hardware store in Chelsea which was sorely needed. Had stopped at the other hardware store a few blocks up first and when they couldn't help me I looked on Yelp and saw that there's a new Hardware store in the neighborhood. I just needed a cap for a kitchen pipe, had a picture of the pipe and a description of what the repairman said that I needed and the lovely guy behind the counter had just what I needed!! What a pleasant trip to the hardware store. I've been won over. Will never go to the other hardware store (or the Home Depot) again if I don't have to!! Highly recommend. read more

False Advertising and terrible customer service. Would not use. I live in the neighborhood and from now on will be walking to Chelsea Hardware or Kove Brothers. Garber posts that is a UPS Access Point, and advertises as such. However they refused to accept a package (about 20 inches by 20 by 20) saying it was too large and made no effort at accommodation. I realize this is not their primary business, however, it is a part of their advertised business. read more

It pains me to say this, but after many years of giving Garber my business it's time to find another local hardware store or (gasp) walk the three blocks to Home Depot. They've simply lost their edge on customer service, particularly one guy who's behind the counter a lot. A month or two ago I saw him essentially tell an elderly woman that she was SOL after a malfunction with the key machine despite not sign up that the owner of the machine is responsible for all problems. Follow that by a recent experience I had when I walked in with a bulb I needed replaced, the guy shoved one in my hand and said "this is what you need", and when it in fact wasn't refused to refund it because it was opened. Not something, mind you, that I picked off the shelf and when I did it myself the second time in picked the correct bulb---wasn't that complicated. So for a $1.50 key and an $8 bulb they likely lost two customers. Nickel-and-diming is not good customer service. My 85 year old father owned a small business for 50 years and was focused on great customer service the entire time. I feel like he could teach these folks a few lessons.
