This place always seems to have whatever I need. I'm not the most comfortable person in hardware stores, and often have a hard time describing what I need, but somehow they're always able to help me! Duplicated keys didn't work. I went back to fix it once, still not working, went back again to ask for refund, and they refused because I lost my receipt. Who would have make it up for $12 of 4 keys and making 3 trips for this? I lost $12 but they lose a life-long customer, period. This is what most specialty stores were all about, and it's getting harder and harder to find one like this. You walk in, and instead of searching yourself through a store that's bigger the a football field, you ask the nice gentleman for what you need. He then goes directly to the item, and hands it to you. This week, I needed to change the cylinder on a deadbolt lock. He went behind the counter and handed it to me. I wanted extra keys, and he made them right then. Simple, but how hard would it have been at the big HD or L warehouse type stores? Could I have saved a few bucks? Maybe, but I value the entire experience, so I saved an hour's worth of frustration instead. Columbus Hardware, I'm going to miss you when I move out of the neighborhood. read more

I was fully intending to buy a new one though I really liked the one I had that barely dripped, and I did not like the brand new styles. My local hardware store. Slightly more expensive than Lowe's or Home Depot but I come for the convenience of proximity to where I live. Most items are in stock but there have been a couple times I had to go to a larger store for specific items like Green Gobbler Drain Opener which I could not find. I don't count that as a discredit because this is a small local hardware store and I can't expect every item in a warehouse store to be equally available. I had spent at least half an hour in another hardware store on W 52nd st before stopping by Columbus Hardware. I wish I had done so sooner. I had an issue with a stripped aerator connector and the folks at Columbus solved my issue by removing the plastic connector and installing a metal connector. This took no more than 3 minutes from the time I walked in. When the price came out to $4.49, I demanded that they charge me more for saving me so much time. They refused. It's rare to give a hardware store 5 stars. And honestly, this place is small and doesn't even have everything you might expect in a hardware store. I'm giving this 5 stars for the service. The people here truly try and help you. They don't scam you into buying tools you don't need or sell you extra things. They ask you what you think you need, ask you what you have to do, and give you various options. I dropped in around 5 or 6 times over a week and a half period and every time I was helped above and beyond what I would expect. They have tons of items and they make keys, and although they don't sell individual nails, they generously gave me four nails when I was asking to buy three. This is wonderful neighborhood hardware store. The staff is super knowledgeable and helpful. They carry basically everything you could ever need in your house, including supplies for carpentry, electrical, plumbing, pests, etc. The prices are reasonable. And the staff (Debbie, Luis, Carlos, etc.) will really work with you to understand your problem and help you fix it. Plus, they cut wood for custom shelving sizes and things like that. I walked in to get a deposable plastic paint tray. When I got to the register the guy looked at it and told me $3.59. I said 'its a piece plastic give me a break'. Let me tell you something, the people at Columbus Hardware are ANGELS. 1) I live in the neighborhood and come here all the time, they are consistently the friendliest, most helpful staff I've encountered. Am never made to feel like I'm a "stupid girl" asking questions about repairs here. 2) tonight, two days before thanksgiving and 15 min after they had already closed, I called them in a panic because I had mistakenly given them the wrong key to copy. They told me don't worry, and told me to come over even though they were closed. I showed up, and a woman was waiting for me inside the store, even though the grate was already pulled down, and ushered me right in. When I tried to pay, they wouldn't let me. Excellent customer service! They are really knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I came in with a drum stool that was missing a piece. One of the employees cut a pipe, put screws in it and fixed it. But there are so many negative reviews about this place on the web that I felt I should say that my experience was nothing but good, so 5 stars. One of their staff was standing on the sidewalk outside the store when I walked up on 9th Ave. He greeted me, led me into the store to figure out exactly what I needed to install a complete deadbolt on my new apartment (he was good-I got the right screwdriver, lock hardware, and everything), and he made sure that extra keys were made as well.
