Given the performance on Saturday, I am not surprised to read this unpleasant and unprofessional response from Gartner's. It is a complete untruth that someone "assured" me that they could do the job. In fact, the employee, Abdul, explicitly stated - and I pressed him on this - that he could NOT do the job. I also spoke to someone called Baba, who said he was very busy and did not have time to look into the matter. About an hour later, I had a phone call from Baba - he had the nerve to use my personal phone number to call me to object to the Yelp review, which he somehow found time to read despite being so busy that he couldn't help me. I'm afraid it's a new era - you can't treat customers this way now and expect to get away with it without anybody else knowing. read more

When I first moved to this neighborhood 29 years ago, Gartner's was the place and hardware store where I was able to find "anything and everything" I needed to put my apartment together. Well, it still is! They have everything,and their prices are excellent too. If you want light bulbs, rubber bath mats, tools, appliances, window shades, and cleaning products, Gartner's will have what you need.They do a great job of making keys, repairing lamps and other appliances with a fast turnaround. I am very fond of Baba, the manager, who is the most omniscient and kindest shopkeeper around. he rest of the staff is very knowledgeable and courteous. I've lived on the UWS for 47 years and have always been a customer of Gartners. I needed expert removal of 3 ACs, installation of 3, and proper disposal of 2. I asked Baba, the long-time head man at Gartners, if he had a technician who could do the job. He sent John, who completed the work in 45 minutes and cleaned up after himself. Don't go to this hardware store. They have a very strange return policy and won't take back unboxed items with a receipt and only purchased 2 days ago. Not great customer care as I was mislead by the cashier to buy a particular tool for a project after describing the task in detail, but after getting home realized it wasn't right for the job so when I went back to return I was denied. The store is extremely well run; organized and stocked better than any other hardware I've been too. Always clean and ready to help. I had a very bad experience with Gartners recently. I purchased a laundry drying rack, but the pictures on the pckage did not adequately describe how one uses the rack. When I assembled it, I very quickly found out that it would not fit in my bathtub. When I tried to return or exchange it, I was told that without the original plastic packaging the sale was final. Of course, I didn't know that it wouldn't work until I removed the packaging. They adamantly refused my attempt to return or exchange it. This is my last interaction with Gartners, and I will notify my friends and family of their unreasonable policies. There are many other hardware stores in the neighborhood, and they will enjoy my business from now on. read more

They were SO helpful. Had dishwasher outlet issue. The son's owner Abdul took a look at my pics and immediately knew what I needed. He directed me to the right part and explained how it could be cut to fit. Could not find the comparable item online as I needed rubber material and not flexible PVC as rubber would absorb the vibrations better - or so they say. Reasonable prices also!! Super friendly and have a wide variety of hardware items. Although they didn't have the size of the item I needed, (black grout) they still had it in a larger size. The prices are double than in Hone Depot, but it's because NYC rents are too high and they aren't buying the quantity that HD is buying - so, at least I'm supporting local businesses. Last but not least, the guys that work here are AWESOME! Super helpful and patient. I would def come here again. read more

I called Gartner's on a Sunday to have an apartment a/c installed, and they did it on Tuesday. Very responsive, and job was professionally done by Angel. He was very personable and knowledgeable. Com'n! You're complaining about the prices at this corner Hardware store after Gracious Home and Lowe's have abandoned the neighborhood and Beacon was forced out of business?! Is this the same store that has knowledgeable staff with a huge variety of items packed into a tiny store that stays open during the virus crisis? Be grateful they are there, and stay open, and have a 7 DAY money back refund policy. Give it up that these guys are not going to have Home Depot prices! They do have a more organized stock of items than HD! Appreciate that they are even there, much less open when you need them. I would often try other stores that were closer and wind up empty-handed, only to try Gartners and of course it's in there! Yes, these guys are knowledgeable and helpful and have So Many things! I have an old door lock (1902ish) and needed an old key ... so i went to a locksmith on 72nd street and asked him if i could try one of the hundreds of old keys on his chain and he said NO ... then he said i'd have to leave the lock (which i removed from my bedroom door) and he'd charge me $25 to test it and then charge me to Make a key ... what a load! Lol! I knew better .... Then i walked down the street to Gartner's and he pulled out some keys and the 2nd one worked, he charged me 6 dollars! ------- Another time I needed to connect 2 internet cables for a computer, i went to AT&T's store and they said no, but to try Gartner's and sure enough they understood what i was looking for (technical term: coupler) and They Had It! Love these guys! Please support a local instead of the huge corporate chain stores ... :) read more

Gartner's was very helpful when I needed a certain color tape. They were helpful and friendly on the phone, and also when I went into the store. Even more impressive, when I was in front of the store, an elderly woman came up. Someone came out and helped lift up her rolling walker. We have regularly shopped at Gantner's for many years; they stock a staggering amount of items in a small space and the staff are extremely knowledgable about what might best suit our needs. Recently, one of the two sockets in a 40-year old lamp stopped working; it looked to our eye as if the contact point within one socket had burned out. When we took the lamp to Gantner's to find a replacement socket, they volunteered that the lamp needed to be rewired and both sockets replaced and they would do the entire job for a reasonable price. Two hours later, we came back and picked up the repaired lamp. Great service, great price. read more

Gartner's Hardware is a terrific local resource - still on the same block of W 72nd Street, but now closer to Amsterdam. The store is staffed by knowledgeable, helpful and friendly personnel who can help you find what you need and give you good advice on the best choices and how to use them. The prices are very reasonable and the selection is extensive -- very impressive given the limited square footage inside. The service is what really sets Gartner's apart. You can get helpful answers to anything from which lightbulb to choose to the best strategy for tackling a complex do-it-yourself project at home. In addition to reasonable prices, Gartner's has reasonable people. If you are dissatisfied with something, they are very fair about refunding/replacing as appropriate. Many local businesses are disappearing from the Upper West Side or being folded into larger businesses. Here's hoping that Gartner's stays just as it is for a good long time. read more

I'm not the greatest when it comes to shopping for the right nails or bolts for home improvement so I really appreciate the time the staff takes to make sure I get the right item.
