I had a rather unusual household problem that required a creative solution, & happened to be near Blaustein Paint & Hardware (after having failed to have the problem resolved at Home Depot), so decided to stop in. What I was most impressed by was that the sales associate, who greeted me immediately upon entry, really listened to & attempted to solve the problem. I have to admit that Home Depot is my go-to, just because they have such a large inventory, but that large inventory is a double-edged sword. More often than not, I find that the sales associates are not cross-trained so, if the product or solution you're looking for is not in the section they have been trained to oversee, you're left with the options of seeking out sales associates in different departments to tell your tale of woe multiple times or assume they don't carry what you need & leave. All this to say, my visit to Blaustein's was a great reminder of the value of one's neighborhood hardware store. read more

I needed clear silicon caulk. I had 10 minutes before I had to be at dinner a block away. Walk in the store, the guy behind the counter asks me what I need (rather than the whole list, I just mentioned the caulk, I'm a very needy person), he takes me to said caulk, I say "ring me up", we go back to the register, I pay, he gives me change, I walk out the door a happy man. Total time: 90 seconds. I was even five minutes early for my dinner reservation. I wish all retail transactions could be that efficient. read more

Another good hardware store in my neighborhood. I thought 12 decades long in business, Garber Hardware, was helpful but this place was even better. The guys work at the store were willing to help and serve right away. One nicer guy took me where I can find what I was looking for and handed to me. The item I got was the last one. When I paid,. he ordered more and said it should be here in few days, very nice. I hate to share this but this particular item was way cheaper than GH (see my receipts). read more

Terrible customer service today!!!!!!! I have been going here for years in search of home repair odds and ends as well as to pick up packages. I've had great experiences in the past but today actually was shaken up by how poorly I was spoken to. I was astounded by how rudely I was treated. I will avoid this man in the future for sure. I do not appreciate being scolded because he doesn't know how to address folks with a "may I help you?" And instead chooses to stare and yell at you from behind. read more

Great service and friendly staff - had what I needed and convenient location and hours of operation

This store is a very good example of why Home Depot is thriving over on 23rd Street, and why some people will walk a half a mile to get there. So I go there to get a key made. Big boo-boo. One attempt. Nah. Two attempts. Nah. Three attempts, still nah, so I go back for refund.' What I get, along with my two bucks is attitude. It's not their fault, it's the machine. Well, like, who is running the machine? Besides, I really don't care about their relationship with the machine. I mean, come on guys, you can't make a key. Sorry, but a fourth try won't do. I want my two bucks so I can go to somebody who can make a friggin key. Now, that's OK. What I didn't like was the attitude: rude, belligerent, really hostile. I know, they probably need the money. Maybe I should have just let them keep the two bucks, as I guess most customers would do once having experienced their charm and competence. As for me, Home Depot beckons. To update: since I wrote this review, Blaustein has moved from its longtime quarters on Bleecker to Greenwich Avenue. A silly move, since Metropolitan Locksmith, a fine key-maker and well-stocked hardware store, is around the corner at 165 7th Ave South. read more

If you have no idea what you are doing or what you need to buy to do it, the guys at Blaustein are incredibly helpful and won't give you any snotty attitude. Just show up, explain your problem, and the next thing you know your drains are clear, your towel rack is back on the wall, your path is clear and your life is back on track. I live a few blocks from the store so I am always going in for one thing or another. They are always helpful with tips for some of the DYI projects. I was there one day and they helped a young mother with her child's bike chain free of charge. A little pricey but definitely worth the convenience and friendly, knowledgeable service. read more

God I am so sick of this place. Their prices are outrageous, selection is awful and the staff are miserable and unhelpful. They sold me a vinyl curtain that smelled horrible and was full of BPAs (poisonous chemicals that many manufacturers have stopped carrying). They also have a $10 minimum for cards. It's 2018, I don't always have cash. I just can't understand the world where they stay in business against big box stores and online retailers. Good riddance. read more

I bought an item five days ago that I attempted to return today. When I first walked into the store, the clerk had a mouthful of food so that I couldn't understand what he was saying -- it was comical. When I told that clerk that I wanted to return what I bought, he got the owner. Even though the item was unused, the owner refused to take it back saying that the receipt said that there would be no refunds - the receipt had nothing of the kind printed on it. I pointed that out, but the owner still refused to take the item back and he was incredibly rude and arrogant. Thankfully, American Expressed stepped in to intervene. Addendum: if you read the owner's comments below, you'll see that we obviously have very different accounts of the situation. From what I gather from his response, It appears that my complaint is not an infrequent one. read more

I bought two of those very expensive Sylvania squiggly shaped eco-friendly bulbs from Blaustein a couple of weeks ago, and one of the bulbs just stopped working. Naturally I had tossed both my receipt and the packaging, but I brought in the bulb hoping they would give me advice on how to go about getting a credit from Sylvania. Without giving it even a second thought, Yann (sp?), the gentleman whom I assume owns the store (maybe Mr. Blaustein himself?) gave me a new bulb and told me he'd deal with the manufacturer. It would have been very easy and entirely within his rights to just tell me I was on my own, but he risked losing the $15 to help a customer be happy. I read the review that Humphrey B. posted below about why Home Depot has been successful. My experience with Blaustein is a perfect example of why local proprietors will and should always be successful in local communities. They go above and beyond what the "big box" retailers will do for their customers, because they have a vested interest in the community. The rest of the guys who work there all know their trade, and while they may not be super salesy and chatty like the blue shirted folks at Best Buy for example, they are smart, quick and get you what you need. I cannot recommend them enough. I will be a customer at Blaustein for as long as I live in NYC. read more

Came in last week to get a key made - had to come back at least 3 times because the copy they made wouldn't fit into the door. I ended up going somewhere else. Get your key made somewhere else. The only reason I didn't give one star is because they were helpful in trying to correct their issue, but they couldn't make a correct copy in the end. Response to owner: The low rating was because it did not get sorted out. It was nice that the employees were helpful, but my reason for coming in was to get a working key, and that did not happen. read more

Went to this store to aid with the oh so stressful moving in process and couldnt be more pleased! From shower curtains and rods, to paint, to pots and pans, to air conditioners and spare keys this little store had it all! They apparently just moved locations to the new one (on Greenwich street) and i found everything to be easy to locate. The staff was more than helpful with every detail and every problem. Not to contradict the other reviewers, but I had a very bad experience just returning some things. It was rude, beligerant....really offensive. I had purchased the items earlier in the day, returned without a receipt and they felt they were being kind refunding anything at all. Just not what I expected from a neighborhood place. I needed a lighter for my stove, so they sold me something that was industrial grade. When I got home I could not squeeze it hard enough to create the spark. When I brought it back they said they would not take it back, even though I had the package and receipt. Well, after my Yelp review the owner/ manager Yan emailed me and offered to give me a refund. (which I didn't take) When I called him, he was super nice and it convinced me to visit the store again. It really made a difference in my feeling, so I changed this review and I give them 4 stars now. I''ll be back soon. I like to support the local family stores, and I also recommend Vercesi and Garber Hardware; both stores are reliable, unbelievably helpful and honor their products and advice. The guys there have helped me with detailed advice on how to change locks, fix plumbing, you name it.
