I had been thinking about painting the doors in my apartment for quite some time and popped in here without any idea of colors or finishes, but walked out so much more confident in my project! They had stickers that you can put on the wall for paint swatches instead of having to paint a bunch of different sections, and I ended up choosing Benjamin Moore 1495 (October Mist.) The employees were so patient and helpful with choosing materials and and they gave me detailed instructions on how to get the paint looking even--the doors turned out beautifully! I would highly recommend coming here for paint and supplies! read more

I came in to pick out shades and the rep was very friendly explaining the different options for my apartment, as well gave me sample books of wallpaper for accent walls. Aside from using janovic plaza for paint and construction orders, their decorator division is excellent, attentive, and willing to work with you. If I used yelp when I was in construction I'd have a 1000 checkin's, though this is my first for decor and nothing but the best. This is the sample we got for my accent wall. I would absolutely NOT use their decorating/blind/shade services. The sales representative, Kathryn, dropped the ball on my interest in purchasing new Hunter Douglas Blinds for my apartment (never reaching out after measurements were completed; failing to put in my order for samples after I had to follow up on two occasions). After she realized these errors, you would think she would follow up on seeing if I finally received the samples; but nope! In addition, the gentleman they sent to measure the windows was not efficient. My large window is presently covered with one full shade. After taking the measurements, he said he didn't know how they would get the new shade for this window in the elevator. I pointed out that there is already a shade on the window and the window has changed size! He then told me to have my building's staff measure the elevator. What did I pay him for? Incomplete service?? Lastly, I reached out to the "corporate" office and I was told that my concerns would be forwarded to the manager, Roberta Levine. It has been 3 weeks and I have not heard back from her. How could I ever trust placing a large costly order with this establishment. NO WAY! read more

*Mix Master Eddie is Funky Fresh* No, Seriously. Ask for Eddie if you have a color you need. More on this in a minute. Been coming to this place for years to buy supplies for my high end painting and decorative painting business....since before they moved from the old location on 67th and 3rd. As far as the store goes, Janovic is still the primary place to go for all kinds of decorative painting supplies that are hard to get elsewhere, even though they've made some fatal changes a few years back (more on that later...). The staff has always been really friendly and helpful to me. In my opinion, this is the best location that Janovic has when it comes to the people and service. Which brings me back to Eddie. He is a whiz at color matching, and the few times I've brought him very specific wet and dry samples of older or nonexistent base coat paint colors to get an *exact* match for touch-ups, he came through absolutely brilliantly. I work for some persnickety clients who notice this sort of thing. Of course, I can always tweak a paint color, but the nicest thing about getting it right on the mixing machine is getting to have a name assigned to your color and being able to order up that exact formula again and again. The reason I'm knocking off a star is that Janovic sold themselves out to Benjamin Moore years ago, who in turn informed them they can't use competitor's products. It's disappointing, to be sure. Now I have to make a separate trip up to Delmo Paints on 87th and York for all my Pratt & Lambert products, including my very favorite Pratt & Lambert Dull Varnish (the only true dull for protecting my finishes without making them satin-y shiny). Because of the Benjamin Moore sellout, I've also been buying a lot of stuff (roller covers, etc) from Home Depot's surprisingly good paint department, too. So now I'm split between three stores, whereas Janovic used to be THE ONE stop for everything decorative painting. Too bad. I wonder if the management realizes..... read more

The RUDEST customer service ever. We hired someone to wallpaper our living room and he sent us here to pick the paper. We didn't know where to start, and asked twice "excuse me, can we get some help." The two ladies actually looked at us and TURNED AROUND!!! Meanwhile, the older lady with the Dooney and Burke bag and fur coat got attention from them toute de suite. Apparently, we didn't look wealthy enough for their liking. We found a paper we like, on our own, but will be buying it elsewhere because I refuse to patronize businesses who look down their noses at people who don't meet their arbitrary criteria on first glance. read more

I have worked in the customer service industry for over twenty years. When I encounter someone who is outstanding I believe in giving them the recognition they deserve. Jill Jurgensen a Color Consultant at Janovic on the Upper East side was exceptional. I am moving into a new apartment and had a color palette in mind but was not certain. After spending endless hours on pinterest and looking through design magazines I walked into the Janovic store without a decision. After a warm greeting Jill asked me some questions and looked at photo's of my new space and of the tear sheets I had. I showed her the colors I originally thought I wanted and within minutes she gave me other options explaining why and how the colors look saturated on an entire wall vs a small sample card. She gave me the new swatches, marked which room each was for, her card and offered additional assistance if I needed more information. I returned a few weeks later to re-assess and Jill was on her break. Although the other consultants offered to assist me I decided to wait for Jill. We reviewed the previous color options and again after some questions she was able to narrow the option to the colors that are now on my wall and I absolutely love. Jill turned an overwhelming decision into a pleasant interaction. I recommend anyone seeking color advice to visit her at the Upper East side Janovic location. read more

We have had an excellent experience working with Lynne Potter, who works as a colorist at this branch of Janovic on M, W and Saturday afternoons. Lynne has an impressively refined sense of color, is thoroughly familiar with the full range of Benjamin Moore colors, is patient, and works with you to take into consideration other finishes, furniture and art, and the lighting situation in a room, as well as the customer's own color preferences, all to come up with just the right color for the situation. Shopping for PAINT, I found the staff to be very helpful & knowledgable. _ZERO-VOC PAINT (gallon $39.99 - another brand is more) It doesn't have a strong odor like regular paint does! Comes in flat, eggshell and glossy finish/shine options! So glad that Janovic carries it! And to my surprise, they had other PAINT SUPPLIES cheaper than at Home Depot: _paint roller tray (on sale for $1.99 compared to HD's $3.56) _blue 3M painter's tape (on sale for $4.99 vs. HD's $6.52) Will gladly return! read more

They lied to me and fought me and another customer rather than do the right thing. I went in to buy a can of paint. While I was waiting at the front counter, a woman employee was giving the customer ahead of me a very hard time about using a coupon and was frankly being rude to the customer. When it was my turn, I gave the woman employee a picture of the old paint can label with the exact color mixture measurements. I placed my order, paid for it, then went out to run another errand. When I went back to the store an hour later to pick up my paint, I was "helped" by Anthony. I saw that the new can of paint had different mixture numbers than the one in the picture I had ordered with. When I asked Anthony about this he said that was what I had ordered. When I showed him the picture of the label with different mixture numbers, he said there was no difference between the two paints and they were the same (this was the first untruth). I will admit that both the old and new paints carried the same name, but once the difference in mixtures numbers was pointed out, he knew and I knew the colors could not be the same. He then went on to tell me to take it home and try it and if the color was not the same I can come back and return it (this was the second untruth). Janovic policy is you can't return custom paint mixtures. After another minute of Anthony saying this that and the other thing, I tell him this is not what I ordered, I don't want it or anything else from them and I want my money back. Amazingly he and the other colleagues behind the counter cite the Janovic no return policy for custom paints. They then begrudgingly offer to give me a can of paint with the color mixture that I had wanted in the first place. After I insisted two more times for a refund I got my money back. Wow--from phone call to delivery--about 20 minutes. The person answering the phone was helpful, friendly and professional. He took my order (a quart of paint needed for a touch-up) and said it would be delivered the next day. Imagine my delight when minutes later the doorman rang--delivery! I had a terrible experience the day before, trying to get the same item from Rainbow on First Avenue, and was hoping someone in NY would deliver, So appreciate the fast, polite, well informed (I was guided to exactly the right type of paint within the brand and number) service. A friend recommended this place over Gracious Homes, when I needed window treatments for my new apartment on the Upper East Side. I would disagree. The shade department is downstairs in the basement. Don't expect much in the way of customer service--you 'll find help only when the sales people done chatting amongst themselves. They know a little about their products--blinds, shades, curtains, but won't offer much in the way of suggestions or volunteer too much information if you don't ask the right questions. The first set of shades I ordered came in with the pulls on the wrong side, after we had specifically discussed which side they should go on. The second try, when I wanted the shades wall to wall came in only to cover the width of the window not the entire wall. The salesperson I dealt with Rosemarie just couldn't get it right. And on top of it they charged for two separate delivery fees! I would not go back to this place for blinds or paint...the prices they charge are high, and the service is mediocre, at best. Try the internet or some of the smaller window treatment places for better value and customer satisfaction. read more

I went to Janovic on East 66th street to pick colors for my NYC apartment. I had several ideas in mind and met with an exceptional colorist there - Lynne. Lynne was amazing!! Extremely knowledgeable and easy to work with! Lynne's explanation of how lighting affects the colors of the walls was something I would have not known to take into consideration. Nor would I have known to make color boards which Lynne stressed the importance of. I highly recommend working with Lynne if you are looking for expertise in a colorist. read more

I bought blinds (automated) from this store several years ago and had a very simple question about replacing the batteries (otherwise they've been fine). When I called the store, one of three things happened: they hung up, they transferred me to "windows" where no one ever answered, or they spoke to me rudely, gave me a number, then abruptly hung up - and the number they gave me went back to the main store phone where they were really rude! I tried on two different days, May 24 and 27, for 20 minutes or so each time. Finally I reached a nice fellow in "windows" who answered my question in two minutes. Good product, lousy customer service. When will these stores learn that the FIRST PERSON A CUSTOMER SPEAKS TO SHOULD NOT BE AN JERK. Yes, even in NYC it isn't acceptable. Joseph B. read more

My girlfriend and I are in the processing of moving and she wanted to spruce up the new place by not only adding some color but some funky wall paper. Of course she leaves me in charge which by the way I have no interests in these types of matters .Upon arriving I was not aware of the huge selection of different wall paper books. I was really overwhelmed. A sales person name Blanca asked if she can help me and I had no idea where to start. As soon as I said this wall paper had to be girlfriend friendly ,she began to ask me questions about her to point me in the right direction. Long story short I came home with one sample and my girlfriend was impressed that I took the time to pick out something that she liked. This sales woman is hands down the nicest person ever and she listens to what you need. I will definitely return with my girlfriend to receive window treatments. read more

We've had nothing but aggravation with this store. One shade we ordered was broken. After a long time they finally picked it up so it can be repaired, and now, three weeks later, they have no record of it being picked up!! I will NEVER go back here. BUYER BEWARE!!! read more

I work for a general contractor and we've been trying to schedule an appointment with them for a small job for one of our clients. They told us they'll call us back. They'll be able to mix any color of Benjamin Moore paint for you which is more than most other hardware and paint stores are able to do (such as Merit Kaplan stores which had such a limited selection of samples that it was a waste of time). I prefer Benjamin Moore than the Behr brand that Home Depot uses. The Aura line is more money, but has primer mixed in, spreads evenly without as many coats and lasts longer. The color consultants are usually very knowledgeable, but as other reviewers have pointed out, there is only one on duty at a time, are usually busy and don't often initiate contact (I waited for about 20 min before I could speak to him and had to make it very apparent that I was waiting). I also ended up rejecting his suggestion and found other colors on my own. As others point out, the counter staff is rubbish. No manners, no pleases and thank you's, no initiative. They are only good at doing what you tell them to do. Lots of contractors here (they get a discount). They couldn't be bothered with the lowly consumer looking to repaint his living room. I've experienced both this one as well as the one 20 blocks north bra 86th and 87th. The uptown one is a bit roomier and not as busy and the customer service is a smidge better there. I waited about 10 minutes for them to mix a sample for me, which is pretty good. read more

The extensive resources she has at her disposal in terms of color families and underlying hues helped me see the undertones and make the right decisions. She is also lovely to deal with. I comparison shopped before buying shades for my new apartment. Make sure you ask if there are extra installation charges bec. some stores tell you the price and then you can be surprised that the job actually costs several hundred dollars more. Janovic was comparable and I liked Ebby, the main contact. However, twice the workers failed to keep appointments, both times going to the wrong address and insisting that the woman at the home told them she did not have an appointment!!! One shade needed a repair about a week after I bought it. The first guy came and tried to convince me that the shade worked even though I could not get it to "lock" and half the time, as he demonstrated, he couldn't either. they ordered a new part...worker went to wrong address...2 days later another worker came and said, within a minute, that he had fixed the shade and it did not need the part! Indeed, he was right. read more
