Illume Lighting Gem: LUCA I cannot say enough wonderful things about Luca at Ilume Lighting. I called on a Friday afternoon, just an hour before they were closing, hoping to get help with my beloved Artemide floor lamp that had mostly discontinued parts. Luca answered and kindly told me to come by, while cautioning that they closed at 3 PM. I rushed over, and I am so glad I did. Not only was Luca welcoming and professional, but his knowledge was incredible--he had even worked for the Rondo company in Milan and knew this lamp inside and out. What a rare find! A friend of mine once spent four hours unsuccessfully trying to fix it, and Luca solved it in under 20 minutes with absolute ease. Beyond his skill, he was one of the nicest people I've met in customer service--genuine, thoughtful, and truly passionate about his craft. And I have to add: the most stylish and fashionable electrical engineer I've ever encountered! Thanks to Luca, my lamp is shining beautifully again. I recently acquired a stunning antique former oil lamp from Ron and Luca at Illumé--easily the most beautiful lamp I now own. The "shop"--a beautifully appointed loft-like space spanning an entire floor--is a true hidden gem, largely unknown (I suspect) outside the rarified world of high-end decorators and collectors. Illumé boasts acres of hand-sewn shades in silk and linen, and as many fabricated from a wide range of specialty papers. They are not cheap, to be sure (although many of the exquisite antique lamps are remarkable bargains). But they're made to endure--and they are very obvious cuts above what you'll find anywhere else. After inspecting some of the shades--which come in nearly all colors--I doubt that I'll be able to buy another overpriced factory-made shade. These are the Real Deal, one-of-kind pieces of art. And Illumé has the worldwide patrician clientele to prove it. I've never written a Yelp review in my life. But working with Ron and Luca--a master craftsman and the firm's lamp restorer--has been an utter delight. At Illumé, you will find an unlikely oasis of Old World civilization tucked away in the heart of New York's increasingly banal "design district." Illumé's shades are well worth splurging on--lifetime investments, really--even if doing so takes a little time (not unlike building a collection). read more

If you need something specialized when it comes to lighting and lampshades, Illume can help! We looked all over both online and in stores to find small shades for the sconces we replaced in our bathroom, but it seemed that no one carried the size we needed (or that the ones we found were simply unattractive.) I called Illume to assess if they had what we needed and was happy to find that they do carry small, 3 to 3.5 inch sconce shades--a very specific request. Jackie was very friendly on the phone and helped me out, so by the time I came into the store it was simple to find and purchase what I needed. Overall, they have a better inventory than you can find at Home Depot or any of the big box stores, and they are a great resource for hard-to-find lighting needs. read more

I'm an interior designer, and have worked with Illume before in a previous location, and loved them. So I was UNpleasantly surprised by my recent treatment at the 58th Street location. I visited the store because I submitted an online form for a custom shade but never got any response. The saleswoman today was pretentious, impatient, with sighs and eye rolls. I rarely write reviews, but felt compelled to share my wonderful experience at Illume. I had two antique German Bauhaus lamps that needed rewiring. I contacted Illume after learning about them in a New York Magazine article from 2013 on the best lighting/light repair stores in NYC. Ron replied to my query right away. I brought in my lamps, which Luca expertly fixed that very day. Ron was so professional, kind, helpful and informative. He explained why the wiring got fried, and how they made my lamps safer and better for US light bulbs. Now my lamps are working beautifully and safely! My whole experience at Illume was stellar. I am in California but walked by this shop many times during visits to NYC. I was delighted to realize they have an online store so I could order some of their unique items for my home here. But this isn't all - Illumé includes an alter ego, a workshop. representing a bit of old New York, when things were handmade by people you knew - with an appreciation for the craft, the process, the one of a kind. A little bit of a decorator's hardware store mixed with a lighting repair shop, this side of Illumé is heaven for all of us who remember being entranced by childhood trips to the neighborhood hardware store. This store is a lamp-lover's dream! One half features unique but tasteful lamp shades while the other half is dedicated to hard-to-find parts and restoration services. There is also a cool assortment of high-end restored lamps for sale throughout the store. The folks that work there are extremely helpful. For example, for years I tried to have a lamp part replicated because I was unable to find a replacement. Ronnie offered to replicate it but then discovered that the part was readily available and instructed me on how to secure the part directly. How many businesses in NYC would actually do this? Most places would have ordered the part, marked up the price, and sold it to the unsuspecting customer. Be aware they're not open on weekends unless by appointment. However, you can walk in without an appointment Monday through Friday. read more

Beyond the best. I went in looking for a shade for a very special mosaic lamp. Ron and Luca saw that what I wanted would require restyling the lamp itself. So...Luca took out his saw and operated on the shaft while I was there, creating the right proportions, while Ron picked out the perfect shade. Great place! My floor lamp died last night. I called this morning as soon as the store opened and got Ron. He said bring it in and he would fix it. Brought it in at 10:30 am and he fixed it in 15 minutes. Was home a little after 11 with my lamp. Couldn't be happier. The staff there is very pleasant and service oriented. I've worked as an Interior Designer for the last 20 years and, as such, have dedicated my career to customer service. I can honestly say that never in my days have I come across a vendor so rude and discourteous as the owner of this shop. What a disappointment. They've done a lot of great work for my firm through the years (although nearly double the price of our other custom lampshade vendors) but you just can't treat your clients the way I was treated in this store. This industry doesn't need another bitter, elitist, practically venomous guy taking his frustrations out on designers. Our job can be challenging enough. Be kind, warm, and helpful to your customers. My experience at Illume was an ideal customer service experience, really one of the best in my recent memory. I needed my favorite lamp repaired and called the shop, where Luca answered. After asking me several questions, Luca suggested that I send him a photo of the lamp so that he could ascertain with greater certainty whether or not he would be able to repair my lamp before having me come to the store. I did so and he responded promptly, confirming that he could indeed fix the lamp and naming his price for doing so. I went to the store and Luca immediately attended to the lamp. He not only fixed the issue and got the lamp functioning properly again; he also pointed out that the lamp cord was beginning to fray and so equipped the lamp with a brand new cord and plug for no extra charge. He also pointed out to bright boy over here that the lamp had a three-way switch that I hadn't been taking advantage of. More than all that, though, Luca imbued his work with the kind of warmth and human touch that can transform a common transaction into a moment that makes one's day just a little bit brighter; one finds this quality so rare in customer service today, and perhaps particularly so in New York. Illume has expert and knowledgeable professionals in lighting design. These people KNOW the business and ask the questions that address my aesthetic and functional design needs. I never would have considered my position while I'm in my bed as it relates to my lamp and lamp switch location. Glad they did. The shop is an explosion of the senses with lighting options along the walls, floors and ceiling space. Got a broken lamp you want fixed? No problem. How lucky am I to have found Illume and the mastery of Luca. I had melted the socket of a beautiful, new Italian lamp by using an incorrect bulb. The manufacturer provided two expensive options - an entirely new base or an entirely new lamp (ouch). Luca assessed a photo of the problem and upon arriving at Illume, he promptly reconfigured the socket, changed the plug and even added a dimmer - all for a very reasonable fee. It was a real treat to witness his superior skills and confidence and the enthusiasm with which he attended to my lamp. My Foscarini Lumiere lamp is better than ever. I wish I could have walked inside of this place that I was extremely ready to do quite a bit of business with; however, even though this business ostensibly closes at 6 pm, at 5:35 I was not only greeted by a closed door, which would have been fine (security, or whatnot) but by an extremely rude woman. Yes, I was dressed in exercise gear. No, I did not "look" the part of someone who was prepared to spend a significant amount of money. Perhaps that is irrelevant, but regardless, I was passed over not once, but twice. The first time, she (a tallish blonde woman with a straight, blunt bob and bangs) shouted at me through the door, apparently asking me if I meant to be there. I indicated "yes" and she retreated, which was odd to me. Then, while I was standing outside, texting the person who was planning on co-purchasing several items with me, the woman returned to the door. I thought she was going to realize that I was serious about - wait - giving her a lot of money - but instead, she said "I can't do anything now. I've already closed out." (The time was 5:40.) Then, "Come back tomorrow if you want anything. The store opens at 10." I looked at the door, which clearly had the hours 9:30 am - 6 pm etched in white on the glass, and I just walked away. I may or may not have said something to the effect of "You need to get your hours straight!" And that was that. Shame. read more

What a great experience! This Is definitely the only place to go for quality lamp shades or any other lamp needs. The lamp shades are high quality as is the service. Ron made it easy. My lamp which was hand made in the Cotswolds, England, did not have the traditional mount of US lamps. No problem at Illume. Ron had the perfect shade with the exact fitting and in no time converted the UK plug for me too. Illume has a vast assortment of shades in sizes and styles. Great experience at Illume! Requested a quote via Yelp to fix my broken CB2 Luxe Floor Lamp and got a call the next day. Didn't want to quote me over the phone without seeing what was wrong with my lamp first, but I kept pressuring until he finally gave me a range of $25-75 for the fix. Now I see why he didn't want to quote me... Fixing my lamp only cost me $15 after I brought it in! So it might be frustrating at first, but just bring your lamp to Luca because there's no way they can know what's wrong until they open it up and look inside. The owner and staff are nice, smart people and I recommend coming here if you need to get your lamp fixed. They also sell a ton of cool looking lamps so if you don't want to fix your broken one, you can buy your new lamp here! Oh, and Luca showed me a ton of cool ways I can reposition my lamp to change it's look that I didn't know existed! So this place is an awesome spot for all around lamp servicing, purchasing and advice! read more

This place is beyond fantastic! The man who does the repairs (Luca) is incredibly knowledgeable and can handle any problem. I have a pair of unique complex lights from Turkey which have had ongoing problems over the years (mostly due to the original, cheap/rushed wiring). The last time one went out, I brought it to Luca for repair. Not only did he fix it in under five minutes while I was in his workshop, he took the time to show me the problem, how it arose, and insisted on replacing all the bulbs to be sure the lamp worked fully before letting me leave. Then, due to the simplicity of the "problem", he refused to charge me! In the past, the exact same problem arose on the paired light, and I was charged $50 for the repair, after leaving the light in the shop for several days. I really can't say enough nice things about him and the work he did. I will be using this store for all of my future lighting needs, referring everyone I know, and spreading the word.
