Ace Hardware
Seby I.

Located on First Avenue Ace Hardware is ideally situated for the residents of Stuyvesant Town. Of course they have many other neighborhood customers that also frequent the store. A lot of products are available from Benjamin Moore paints, games for children, gardening supplies to a multitude of cleaning products. I was in search for Bluette which I used to buy at Essex Market but after the pandemic was no longer stocked there. Here Mrs. Stewart's Concentrated Bluing was similar and I was delighted to finally find it. This is a product that I like to use for sheets and towels. Bottles of Soft scrub are sold for $4.99 which is the cheapest I have found. Keys are also cut here although one will be questioned if one stays at Stuyvesant Town as that's forbidden. Employees here are friendly and helpful taking customers to show them where the product is located.

I bought small desktop fan from this store then flew out of town for 6 weeks. (Maybe it was $40???? I do not know because I did not even look at the receipt). When I returned to town yesterday I decided to return it and get a larger floor model on AMAZON. I go to the store...they said no returns on fan. FINE. That is their policy, which they said is due to people buying, using and returning. I look at them and say nothing....proceed to look for something else in the store... NOW. They way the old man said all this to me was NOT FINE. RUDE. This guy should not be in front of any customers- he should be put in the deep back, or downstairs, far away from paying customers. Anyway- I return home to open the fan since I am stuck with it- and I open it and it totally looks used or damaged. See pictures. I walk back to the store to tell show him the irony of not accepting fan returns (he said because people could use them and then return them)- because they clearly sold me a damaged or used fan. He yells at me- they did not sell me that fan in that condition. I shop at this place all the time before this. THEY MOST CERTAINLY SOLD ME THIS SCUFFED UP FAN. I tell him I am not even asking for anything. I am just returning to show him the irony of the store policy. He again yells at me that they ABSOLUTELY DID NOT SELL ME THIS FAN. THEY ABSOLUTELY DID SELL ME THIS FAN IN THIS CONDITION. AND WHEN I RETURNED IT, IT HAD BEEN OPENED FOR THE FIRST TIME FOR ALL OF 5-10 MINUTES. ENOUGH TIME FOR ME TO OPEN IT AND ROUNDTRIP BACK TO THIS STORE. As much as I shop in this place and as much as I have spent here. I assure you- this was not worth losing this customer over the accusation that I lied about this fan. I will take my business elsewhere from here forward. I left the fan with them. This is how much this was NOT about the money. It was the principle. The poor product quality. The accusation that I lied. AND THE HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. 0/10. Go to another location, where they treat customers with respect and don't accuse frequent customers of lying. No one should be spending their hard earned money to be talked to or treated so disrespectfully.

Simply honor your hours. If you say you close at 8p, then close at 8p. I showed up at 7:48 to get some AAA and got turned away.

This is my second review. This time I'm reviewing the Veneziano plaster product from Vasari Lime…read morePlaster & Paint. Project: 8'x8' living room accent wall in navy blue Veneziano plaster by Vasari Plaster using a 7"x4"x2"ish trapezoid trowel with a polished stainless steel blade. Absolutely Love My Vasari Veneziano Plaster Wall -- Even With My DIY Mistakes! I tackled an 8'x8' living room accent wall using Vasari's Veneziano plaster in navy blue with a 7"x4" trapezoid trowel. Let me start by saying: the final color isn't exactly the navy blue I envisioned--but I'm completely in love with it. I ended up with a rich indigo tone that shifts beautifully between navy and deep blue. Honestly, it turned out even better than what I hoped for. What amazes me most is how forgiving this product is. As a first-time DIY'er using Venetiano plaster, I made several mistakes along the way, but the Vasari product still delivered a stunning result. Here are a few things I did "wrong," and yet the wall still looks incredible: * I primed the wall with a high-quality water-based primer, not realizing it was a stain-blocking primer (a big no-no, as I learned later from Vasari's tutorials). I debated re-priming but decided to keep going--and it worked out fine. * My first coat was thicker than recommended. It's supposed to go on like smooth sour cream, but mine took extra strokes to spread. Between learning the "feel" of the trowel and working over a non-ideal primer, the surface wasn't as spreadable as it should've been. * Despite all that, I started seeing the artistic variation and texture I wanted right from the first coat. I loved the soft burnished sheen that appeared in spots, it gave the wall character and depth. After three coats, I stopped. The color is rich, textured, and full of subtle movement. It doesn't have that perfectly blended, ultra-smooth look from the demo videos, but that's not what I wanted. It's organic, a little imperfect, and absolutely beautiful. Lessons learned for next time: A. Buy the primer and tools directly from Vasari. B. Go lighter and smoother on the first coat to minimize unwanted shine and get better color absorption for later coats. In short, this product is bulletproof--it can handle beginner errors and still produce a high-end, artistic finish. I couldn't be happier with my wall or the journey getting there!

I opted for lime wash, and the assistance and patience provided by Vasari / Adrien from the NY store were invaluable. Their guidance was instrumental in helping me make an informed decision regarding the ideal "white" paint and expedite the shipping process so I have my project done in time , beautiful colors and quality product , Thank you !

So, I never write…read morereviews on Yelp. Actually I never write reviews period. But I had such a fantastic experience in Ace Hardware Brickman 18th and First Avenue that I must share. I went in to get some shelves for my apartment. I was greeted by an older gentleman, who not only got me what I needed but took the timeout. I mean really took the time to explain to me what to do. Which I needed. The staff friendly, well trained, and kind. A handicap woman came into Ace while I was there and I was watching from the corner of my eye. I must say there are good people out there. It might as well have been Michelle Obama the way the helped this lady. Their expertise are second to none. Very very educated in all aspects of hardware. I go to Home Depot ask them where can I find an angle grinder cordless they look at me like I have three heads or push me off on someone else. I shouldn't feel that way that I'm bothering them when asking for some service-be a human. Anyway screw Home Depot never get a penny when I can go to this first rate godsend on 18th and first.

When I brought it back and explained what happened, the manager, Yvette, plugged it in, ran it for a few seconds with nothing attached, told me it was "fine" and treated me like I was making it up. A drill motor running with no load won't catch an issue that only appears under load, and a brand new drill that smokes is a serious fire hazard. It was completely negligent of Yvette to tell me to continue using the drill and not accept it as a defective return. This creates both a liability issue for the store and a safety issue for me. I raised these concerns and she was dismissive the whole time. I ended up leaving, calling Ace's customer service line and getting them on a three-way call with the store. The phone rep was great and easy to deal with. Yvette only agreed to take the drill back because I'd ordered it online through Ace for pickup, which meant the rep could force the return. Otherwise I doubt she'd have budged. She gave the rep attitude too. After she hung up, the rep apologized to me for how rude Yvette had been. I went back to the store and the return went through, but even when completing the return, the cashier was openly cold. I asked how her day was going, and she just said "fine," flat and unfriendly, without looking at me. Because of this experience, this location has lost my business. I won't buy from a hardware store that doesn't seem to take seriously the safety of the tools it sells or how it treats customers who flag a problem. I've still got the invoice, the return receipt, and Ace customer support case number if the owner wants to look into it.
