After thanks to road construction on NYE 2025, I was w/o water until NYD 2026, ironically, When I went to shower on 1/2/26 the hose to my handheld shower head plastic covering had cracked making hand held useless. Besides the ridiculous prices, the service was appalling. If they do not have it, they will order it for you quickly. You just get so used to walking into Home Depot and hunting for what you are looking for, waiting on line forever, over paying, and then being eyed suspiciously while leaving the store by security. Imagine instead walking through the front door of a hardware store and being pounced on by an earnest young man who asks what you are looking for and then takes you to where it is. This store is huge, encompassing two levels. The item I was looking for was on the lower level, and I was impressed to find a second young man waiting downstairs to help anyone coming from above, but of course I didn't need his help because the first clerk was right behind me. While I'm sure this hardware store is named after its owner, it could very well be named after their customer service. I've been to this store 3x in the last 2 months and each time I returned I hoped that the bad customer experience I had last time was a fluke. Jokes on me - it wasn't. My family ran a small business for 50+ years, and I'm typically happy to support them, but I've learned my lesson here and will not return. The staff is unfriendly and rude, and the cashiers seem more interested in their TV than giving you service. You'd think in the age of e-commerce that these guys would figure out that good customer service goes a long way, but that does not seem to be the case. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

Dick's is pretty unprofessional. I'm starting my review with that because when I walked in, one of the employees (I'm guessing she's the wife of the owner) was busy stocking shelves and when I said "excuse me" she started muttering about having "no fucking help". Now, I have quite the mouth on me but I would not even say that within earshot of a paying customer. She made my keys pretty quick while her husband started to ring me up. They have a sign taped to the counter that says there is a $10 minimum for c/c purchases. My total was a little under $6.00. So I tossed in a pack of batteries to bring up my total so I could use my company card. So why am I giving this place 3 stars and not 1 or 2? They appeared to have a decent selection of hardware-related items and since the financial district isn't exactly known for hardware stores, this is helpful. They also have a cute dog (think bodega cat) that will follow you to the door, almost like he's going to walk you out. read more

I dig this store a lot. The selection is amazing for being nestled in the middle of FiDi, they stay open on weekends, and I get along with the staff just fine (despite all the reviews to the contrary). Do they sometimes seem aloof, or more interested in BS'ing with each other than proactively helping customers browse? Sure. But to me, it feels more like a family joint where the employees simply have that level of familiarity with each other due to sticking around for awhile, rather than churning thru clueless bright-eyed transplants like so many other NYC service industries do. And at the same time, if you ask for their opinion on completing a project or choosing between products, you'll get a gods-honest opinion from folks who know their way around local construction. They take my returns back w/o complaint. They take credit cards (with a minimum, natch). Twice, the owner has even let me walk out w/o paying because I didn't have enough cash on hand and he was about to close -- and yes, I always returned the next morning to settle up. What's to complain about? Hearing the word "fuck" echo from the basement every so often? Grow up. Only reason I can't give them 5 is the pricing. It's high, even for a neighborhood store in an expensive part of town. But I will continue to pay the premium to support a business that always has what I need, when I need it. read more

Okay, I grew up in Redneck Central; I'm more used to space, so the whole "urban hardware store" thing where the contents of what would have been a huge Ace Hardware or something back home are crammed into a room the size of my apartment has taken some getting used to, but it means I won't settle for a crap selection just because I'm in a city. Anyway. Surprisingly big selection; I came by to buy some deadbolts (after, ahem, SOMEONE left both of our building's front doors open & unlocked and someone tried to break in to my apartment at 3am... you stay classy, upstairs neighbor!) and was really impressed by the amount of stuff I found. It's not the best organized and it's a little pricey, but they definitely had a lot of options for pretty much everything you might need. But where this place gets me is the staff. They are exactly the kind of people I expect to find in a rural hillbilly hardware store: kinda butch, helpful but kinda frazzled, and extremely foul-mouthed and hilarious and take-no-prisoners. While I was waiting in line, the guy working the register was making a phone call to (I guess) a business owner who had sent his lackey in for some copies of a restricted key. The side of the conversation I overheard was something like "yeah, this one says 'do not copy' so I gotta get your permission before I can make 'em. Anything else? Love this little store around the corner from me in Financial District. I am self-employed and have an office in the neighborhood. Whenever I need materials or tools to fix something I pop into the store and always find it. I got 4 keys made for $5 here; I consider it extremely reasonable given the neighborhood. I happened into Dick's Hardware one afternoon in the month of April, when following my intuition as I passed by after a business appointment. I had been looking for a small lady hammer, the pretty painted kind with several tiny screwdrivers in the handle. Price: $8.99. A real Bargain. The saleslady, named April, was so kind and helpful, she immediately searched her computer, and invited me behind the desk to look at the images and choose the product I desired. I chose, and she placed an order for a box of them. Said she would call me when it came in. I gave her my number. I happened to ask her if she knew of a good hair salon, as I was looking for a decent place to get my hair styled and trimmed. April proceeded to tell me of a place around the corner, and offered to walk me there herself and introduce me to the owner. Well, I got a great haircut, at a first time customer discount, and went back to show April my new haircut. When I picked up the lady hammer, I was pleased and grateful and thanked April and the other young salesman, who was also friendly and kind. Needed a couple items and decided to bring some business to a local business rather than Bed Bath and Beyond like I usually do. Went here for the first time today and the store has probably a million items and things can be very hard to locate. I greeted the woman and she barely mumbled a hello and when I asked her where the first thing I needed was she pointed to the left and told me I could find it there. When I asked her about the second item, she had zero idea what it was, so I'm just going to go on Amazon for the second item. I had major issues looking for the first item and I saw the gentleman in the last aisle and asked him where to find the item. He didn't say a word, went to the item and got one for me. Seemed like he didn't want to make eye contact, so I felt discouraged to ask him to get a second one for me (I needed two) since it was placed high up and I couldn't reach. I gave up on wanting a second one (and I'm being vague so to avoid any retaliation in case I run into these two folks again). When I went to pay, I tried to make small talk with the woman in attempts to give her a second chance at winning my business a second time (since I live across the street from them), however, she didn't want to speak to me and mumbled something very inaudible. I can't tell if they are angry about their day/life or Amazon. In summary, not very friendly, can't find anything and they don't like to build relationships with their literal neighbors (I even informed her I live across the street - no improvement in level of friendliness). read more

I just went here today to have keys made. Cost is just $1.59 per key. Service is great. They go above and beyond. I previously came here to find small sized lettering to stick to an outside item. The staff special ordered the lettering for me. I am talking about some peel the back off lettering that cost like $2 or $3. Anyone else would have just stated we do not have it.
