The staff here couldn't be more helpful - much more efficient, pleasant, patient, caring and knowledgeable than dealing with some of the big box home maintenance shops which have sprung up near the Gowanus. And they offered me a creative solution whereby I (a) got the shelves sized as I wanted and (b) paid less than I expected/had been quoted elsewhere. In fact, the one downside was in fact a direct outgrowth of their efficiency - I hadn't been expecting to walk out with anything, and wound up having to schlepp some (relatively) heavy wood to a couple of other stops before heading home. It's mostly a warehouse, but there is a nice little customer shop on the side with basic hardware items (screwdrivers, glue) and some custom-order shelving/floor options. Not much here beyond that, obviously, and definitely a bit off the beaten path if you don't have wheels, but in the final analysis, I'm pleasantly surprised I came out of my way to Dykes for my wood needs.

It was the first time I remember seeing a woman behind the desk also. I had a problem with a stuck lock on my gate and instead of trying to sell us a metal clipper, that might not work, they offered to lend us a small cordless multi-metal cutter and safety glasses. It cut through the lock and we were able to open our gate and have our movers finish their job. It is wonderful to have a community minded shop so close to where I live. They have been in the South Slope for 100 year and I wish them another 100 yers there!

I really wish I remembered the name of the worker who helped me but he was a tall, dark, 40ish year old man if that narrows it down. He was so knowledgeable about the different types of wood flooring and was so eager to help. He probably spent about an hour with us. I was able to find even lighter wood flooring at the shop next door, so I ended up going with them instead.

I was told by my contractor that the floor I bought would buckle with temperature changes. I was instructed to get a floor that was waterproof and not flexible. I call LL flooring and ask about the return policy. They told me that they are rebranding and will no longer be called LL Flooring but lumber liquidators instead and they are cannot lookup orders for exchanges. The policy on their website is a 90 days for exchanges or returns. I'm within the 90 day window. The next day they change the policy online. I decide to put the flooring in my car to take it back. I looked up the store hours to make sure they were open and they were closed on 10/6/24. I filed a dispute with my credit card. I also heard that they change the connecting mechanism of the tiles every 5-10 years. So when you look for 1-2 pieces to replace, you have the replace the whole floor. If you buy from them make sure you keep 2-3 extra boxes in storage ready for that day.
