Needed to get keys made and they did a great job at a reasonable cost. Staff very pleasant to deal with:)

This is my local go to hardware store. It has that neighborhood feel and staff that has all the advice you need for basic jobs. An anachronism in the modern day mega hardware stores. They have all the basic and reasonably priced. - knowledgeable staff - friendly and approachable - dog friendly Highly recommend read more

The sweetest most helpful people work here. They helped me with everything I needed and were so so kind.

I've lived around the corner from this place for 4 years but never went in until the other day. Honestly.. I love this store, it has everything you need in this tiny shop. Power tools, parts, pieces, paint, adhesives, wood, plumbing, lightbulbs etc. Shop person wasn't the most social (with me a complete stranger).. but he helped me find the part I needed and didn't watch me like a hawk even though I walked through the entire store scoping out every last thing. Will definitely be back. Shop local. read more

It's a convenient local hardware store in the Upper EV and really, I don't think I would come here for anything special beyond the usual glue, nails, padlocks etc. The prices are a bit steeper than you'd find at BB&Beyond or Home Depot and you won't find the variety you may need for a larger project but they've always had what I need for apartment living. The service, while considerate and one on one, is also a bit gruff. The guys here honestly do want to help but I've felt a bit of machismo when I come here asking questions. I'm not a little lady, and I know what wood glue is...how else do you think I put together my IKEA furniture? read more

This grumpy old fat man who works here is soooo rude, he is awful. If you are not builder and needs their advice, he really talks to you like you are stupid and just leave you alone. You can't shop here with this man unless you know everything. It's a shame that the shop has wide good selections. read more

Syd is one of the best guys in town! Always there when you need him! There may have been some changes and I've read some of the comments in the reviews and not too sure about the experiences, but as a former property manager in Brooklyn, Syd would come all the way down from Manhattan to bring our buildings inventory and greatly appreciated that. Will visit real soon, Syd! read more

Waited 15 minutes past 9 which is the time they are supposed to open but just like last time they don't follow their own hours , just go to 114 1st ave they are more punctual and open on time!! read more

My boyfriend has banned me from shopping here because every time I leave the store I am always upset about the rudeness of the grumpy old men who work there. They should probably retire. read more

I used to live close to this store and went there from 2003-2006. I was always impressed with their friendliness and willingness to help me figure out what I need without making me feel like an idiot or that I asked a stupid question. I recently moved back to the neighborhood and went there to buy drywall anchors for a curtain rod I want to put up in my apartment. I brought the hardware and anchors that came from the manufacturer. Instead of trying to sell me on their stuff Mitch said that what came from the manufacturer would get the job done and encouraged me to just use that (instead of spending money at his shop!) He even helped me figure out what size drillbit I should use based on the size of the anchor that was sent to me by the manufacturer. I am very impressed with them and will definitely go back for my hardware needs. This is a family run business. Way different than a big box store where the people helping you are not the owners. If you live in the neighborhood definitely stop there before you go to Home Depot or any of the other large hardware stores. read more

Super helpful staff, I was working a show at the 14th Street Y Theater, and they helped with all of our last minute tech needs. Thanks for the friendly service guys! read more

Great prices and fast service! This is a little hardware store but they seem to have everything and then some! They made copies of keys for me in minutes and the prices were very reasonable. read more

Went here to look at a line of stain samples that few other places carry on one of the first nice spring days of the year. No one greeted or asked if they could help me at any point. As I looked at the samples, the two old men (I heard them say to someone that the young guys weren't working that day) proceeded to have a long, drawn out conversation about how great it is when women start to shed their clothes for spring and summer wear, commenting on specific women as they watched them walk past the shop. Disgusting. Needless to say, I won't return or be doing any business here. read more

Reasonably stocked store for the size. Unfortunately it's often closed. The prices are quite high. The few other stores in East Village are generally better options in price and selection and convenience. read more

I've been an H&W customer for over 30 years. This morning I went to buy some cardboard packing boxes. The owner's son was alone in the store. He asked me to wait while he served other customers. That was understandable. Then he said he had to go downstairs to get the boxes. He made me wait outside the store in the street while he got the boxes. When he came back, I remarked that I thought it was disrespectful to ask a long- time customer to wait for 5 minutes in the street. He started yelling, told me he had money in the till which implies that I would shoplift or streal from him. He said I had an attitude and then refused to sell me the boxes. If anyone had an attitude, it was him. I'm done with this store. read more

Mitch was super helpful - he manually cut my vertical blinds that were ordered from a big box store and came in too wide for my window. I was in and out in 5 minutes and he only charged me $5, he saved me a huge headache. Thanks Mitch!! read more

I've been a customer of this store for 16 years. I've had lots of keys made there and they all work. I always compare the original with the duplicate in the store, ask for a receipt and check right away to be sure the duplicates work. They always have. They carry lock cylinders made in the U.S. and some made in China. I buy the ones made in the U.S. not only to stimulate the U.S. economy, but also because I find them to be better quality. I've found the old guys in the shop to be patient and helpful. I buy things at mom and pop shops whenever possible, because I ten to prefer small businesses to global corporations. read more

I've been going here for years, paying a little more for my items to help out an individually owned store rather than to go to a chain store where things would be cheaper. I have probably spent hundred of dollars here. Today, I brought a window shade i had bought at Bed Bath & Beyond that had not been cut to the right size. I asked them to recut it for me (an easy process that takes about a minute) and they started measuring a new shade to be cut to the same size as my old one. I pointed out that I wanted mine recut, not a new shade and they said that they will only cut ones that have been purchased at their store. I offered to pay for the service, but they refused, stating that it was their "policy." I responded "with all due respect, that is a ridiculous policy and I will not be shopping here again." The man told me "good. we don't need your attitude." and walked away from me. Now, if they had wanted to charge me $5, $10, $15 for a minute's work, that would have been fine with me but they were downright nasty. The only thing that these local "mom 'n' pop" stores have is their personalized service and relationship with neighbours. Apparently they don't care about it, plus they have a small selection of merchandise, which is all more expensive than Home Depot on 23rd st. read more

They own apartments for rent in the same building. I was their tenant before. They have not returned my deposit two months after I moved out. They did not even give me a decent reply when I called them for that. read more

Really really really nasty people working there. Incredibly rude, not willing to hear you out or give you the time of day if you even have one question. Definitely take your business to another hardware store in the area, where you're bound to find a bigger range of supplies and a much nicer staff. Totally unprofessional and mean to customers, especially the old man who runs the place. Gives New Yorkers a bad name. read more

I don't know what the complaints are about!!! This is not BB&B or Home Depot. This is a family owned neighborhood store which I find friendly and convenient. My husband and I have shopped here for many years and never ever had a problem. The staff know us by name and I might add has a good sense of humor. Our questions are welcomed and also good suggestions if we don't find what we're looking for. We appreciate you guys at H&W, thanks for being there! read more

Great small neighborhood store. May not have the variety of home depot but they have all the basics and are super friendly and helpful.

I have been shopping here for years and have never had a problem. This family owned store.has always been a part of the LES. They always take the time out to ask questions so that you get exactly what you need. If they don't have what you need, they will suggest where you can find it. You don't get that service from these new stores that are clueless and only want to make money. As to the girl who wanted her shades resized, I'm sure the place where you purchased them would not "fix" someone else's mistake either. You should have purchased them at H&W in the first place. Get over it!! I appreciate you guys at H&W, great work!! read more

The customer service that the staff, especially Howard, shows their customers is completely unmatched! These people really went out of their way to make it possible to finish some time-sensitive home improvement projects. They are very helpful and willing to work with you. This business deserves to be highly recommended! read more

i've also been going there for years and the staff is always so kind and always eager to help. i'm not the handiest person around so all their time explaining to me how to do certain projects is very helpful. i will not, and refuse to go to the big chains for my hardware needs...the city is filled with mom and pops...and is what makes where we live so special. i strongly recommend h & w....every business can't be perfect all the time but they sure are close! read more
