I've lived around the corner from this place for 4 years but never went in until the other day. Honestly.. I love this store, it has everything you need in this tiny shop. Power tools, parts, pieces, paint, adhesives, wood, plumbing, lightbulbs etc. Shop person wasn't the most social (with me a complete stranger).. but he helped me find the part I needed and didn't watch me like a hawk even though I walked through the entire store scoping out every last thing. It's a convenient local hardware store in the Upper EV and really, I don't think I would come here for anything special beyond the usual glue, nails, padlocks etc. The prices are a bit steeper than you'd find at BB&Beyond or Home Depot and you won't find the variety you may need for a larger project but they've always had what I need for apartment living. The service, while considerate and one on one, is also a bit gruff. The guys here honestly do want to help but I've felt a bit of machismo when I come here asking questions. I'm not a little lady, and I know what wood glue is...how else do you think I put together my IKEA furniture? read more

This grumpy old fat man who works here is soooo rude, he is awful. If you are not builder and needs their advice, he really talks to you like you are stupid and just leave you alone. You can't shop here with this man unless you know everything. It's a shame that the shop has wide good selections. read more

I used to live close to this store and went there from 2003-2006. I was always impressed with their friendliness and willingness to help me figure out what I need without making me feel like an idiot or that I asked a stupid question. I recently moved back to the neighborhood and went there to buy drywall anchors for a curtain rod I want to put up in my apartment. I brought the hardware and anchors that came from the manufacturer. Instead of trying to sell me on their stuff Mitch said that what came from the manufacturer would get the job done and encouraged me to just use that (instead of spending money at his shop!) He even helped me figure out what size drillbit I should use based on the size of the anchor that was sent to me by the manufacturer. I am very impressed with them and will definitely go back for my hardware needs. This is a family run business. Way different than a big box store where the people helping you are not the owners. If you live in the neighborhood definitely stop there before you go to Home Depot or any of the other large hardware stores. read more

Went here to look at a line of stain samples that few other places carry on one of the first nice spring days of the year. No one greeted or asked if they could help me at any point. As I looked at the samples, the two old men (I heard them say to someone that the young guys weren't working that day) proceeded to have a long, drawn out conversation about how great it is when women start to shed their clothes for spring and summer wear, commenting on specific women as they watched them walk past the shop. Disgusting. Needless to say, I won't return or be doing any business here. read more

I've been an H&W customer for over 30 years. This morning I went to buy some cardboard packing boxes. The owner's son was alone in the store. He asked me to wait while he served other customers. That was understandable. Then he said he had to go downstairs to get the boxes. He made me wait outside the store in the street while he got the boxes. When he came back, I remarked that I thought it was disrespectful to ask a long- time customer to wait for 5 minutes in the street. He started yelling, told me he had money in the till which implies that I would shoplift or streal from him. He said I had an attitude and then refused to sell me the boxes. If anyone had an attitude, it was him. I'm done with this store. read more

I've been a customer of this store for 16 years. I've had lots of keys made there and they all work. I always compare the original with the duplicate in the store, ask for a receipt and check right away to be sure the duplicates work. They always have. They carry lock cylinders made in the U.S. and some made in China. I buy the ones made in the U.S. not only to stimulate the U.S. economy, but also because I find them to be better quality. I've found the old guys in the shop to be patient and helpful. I buy things at mom and pop shops whenever possible, because I ten to prefer small businesses to global corporations. read more

I've been going here for years, paying a little more for my items to help out an individually owned store rather than to go to a chain store where things would be cheaper. I have probably spent hundred of dollars here. Today, I brought a window shade i had bought at Bed Bath & Beyond that had not been cut to the right size. I asked them to recut it for me (an easy process that takes about a minute) and they started measuring a new shade to be cut to the same size as my old one. I pointed out that I wanted mine recut, not a new shade and they said that they will only cut ones that have been purchased at their store. I offered to pay for the service, but they refused, stating that it was their "policy." I responded "with all due respect, that is a ridiculous policy and I will not be shopping here again." The man told me "good. we don't need your attitude." and walked away from me. Now, if they had wanted to charge me $5, $10, $15 for a minute's work, that would have been fine with me but they were downright nasty. The only thing that these local "mom 'n' pop" stores have is their personalized service and relationship with neighbours. Apparently they don't care about it, plus they have a small selection of merchandise, which is all more expensive than Home Depot on 23rd st. read more

Definitely take your business to another hardware store in the area, where you're bound to find a bigger range of supplies and a much nicer staff. I don't know what the complaints are about!!! This is not BB&B or Home Depot. This is a family owned neighborhood store which I find friendly and convenient. My husband and I have shopped here for many years and never ever had a problem. The staff know us by name and I might add has a good sense of humor. Great small neighborhood store. May not have the variety of home depot but they have all the basics and are super friendly and helpful.

I have been shopping here for years and have never had a problem. This family owned store.has always been a part of the LES. They always take the time out to ask questions so that you get exactly what you need. If they don't have what you need, they will suggest where you can find it. You don't get that service from these new stores that are clueless and only want to make money. As to the girl who wanted her shades resized, I'm sure the place where you purchased them would not "fix" someone else's mistake either. You should have purchased them at H&W in the first place. i've also been going there for years and the staff is always so kind and always eager to help. i'm not the handiest person around so all their time explaining to me how to do certain projects is very helpful. i will not, and refuse to go to the big chains for my hardware needs...the city is filled with mom and pops...and is what makes where we live so special. i strongly recommend h & w....every business can't be perfect all the time but they sure are close! read more
