If I could leave zero stars, I would. Three years after hiring General Lumber, we're still dealing with the consequences of their poor workmanship and lack of accountability. We selected General Lumber after comparing several companies, trusting Robert--our main point of contact--who repeatedly assured us, "We're local and not going anywhere." That promise quickly unraveled. We hired them to order Marvin windows and manage installation for 17 windows across two units in our building. They were not the cheapest, but we chose them based on their claim of experience and quality. During installation, Robert and his contractor decided to alter the placement of the windows without understanding the original design intent or performing any verification. They admitted they "didn't understand" why our previous windows were placed where they were--but moved forward anyway. We trusted them as the supposed experts. That was a costly mistake. Shortly after installation, water began leaking into both units and the shared lobby during rainstorms. These areas had never experienced water intrusion in the five years prior to the install. We raised the issue immediately in September 2021. Robert visited once, performed a cursory visual inspection, and began a months-long pattern of excuse-making and blame-shifting. He variously blamed a "once-in-a-lifetime storm," the cornice, and our roof--none of which stood up to basic scrutiny or third-party inspections. Instead of acknowledging the problem or investigating further, Robert and General Lumber resorted to misinformation and deflection. At one point, they claimed water wasn't entering "through or around" their installation--ignoring the fact that they had changed the physical placement of the windows, which compromised drainage and blocked weep holes. Our own hose testing demonstrated conclusively that water was entering above the windows--exactly where they sealed over a critical drainage gap. General Lumber refused to take accountability, perform any real diagnostics, or even revisit the job site for follow-up testing. When we withheld the final payment due to unresolved issues, they threatened us with legal action and filed a lien against our property. We went to arbitration. My husband, with no legal training, meticulously presented our evidence. Robert and his legal team were unprepared. Their entire defense relied on vague references to extreme weather and unverified claims--while we provided photographic evidence, water test results, contractor correspondence, and expert confirmations. The arbitrator ruled in our favor. The outcome? We still have 12 faulty windows that will need to be completely redone at a cost of $12,000 or more--on top of the $28,000 we already paid General Lumber. Robert and his team never stood by their work, never offered a solution, and used legal threats to try and silence us. This has been a nightmare of wasted time, money, and stress. If you're considering General Lumber--especially if you're trusting Robert to stand by his word--proceed with caution. They talk a good game about being "local" and reputable. But when things go wrong, they disappear, deflect, and leave you to pick up the pieces. read more

No stars, web site says open till 2 on Saturday, not so much. How does a hardware store stay closed on a Saturday when people are off from work and need to do/fix things around house. I've been happily and fairly exclusively using General Lumber since I moved to Hoboken 4 years ago. At least in my experience, I find that a lot of the negative reviews are unfounded. I can't even believe them to be honest and it made me write one. The staff is extremely helpful and kind, quite funny in fact too. Their sales floor is smaller than a big box store, so if you need something weird, call ahead and they will order it for you. They have also helped advise me on different things I could do with problems I've had. I've saved money many times, and usually have a good conversation while I'm there. Highly recommend. read more

stay far away unless you know EXACTLY what you want or need. asking basic questions and the sales men in back make you feel stupid for asking but don't volunteer any information or sit to work with you. they wont give you the time of day. literally ppl at lowes or home depot are more helpful and that's really saying something read more

We came here to look at new front doors, and the gentleman who helped us was patient and helpful. He was very knowledgeable and honest. He didn't try to push us to buy at all. In fact, he told us that it would be really hard to find a non-custom door that fit how high and narrow the frame is, and was upfront about a cost of a custom door. While we didn't end up buying, we would 100% recommend this place as a great neighborhood hardware store that employs people who actually care. read more

Hands down the best hardware store and best family owned shop in the Hoboken/Jersey City area. Helpful, friendly, appreciative and extremely knowledgable staff. They have helped me resolve household issues the past 8 years I've lived in Hoboken and even gave me free tools to help me fix my locked bathroom door. Do not like it here. The hours are obnoxious. They never answer the phone and when I visited I felt rush and blown off by the person I spoke to for other customers. Not a great place if you have questions or need guidance. They only have time for people who "know what they want to order," which is what the guy told me before I could explain what I needed. I called in to receive a price quote for an interior french door and sliding track and hanger and the gentlemen on the phone was very rude. he gave me a pretty steep price quote which was way above what the competition was quoting and then rudely hung up on me. i would not recommend this store to anyone. read more

Is 5 stars all I can give? General Lumber is a perfect 10! The most hospitable, knowledgeable, and professional group of employees one can come by. Not only is their ample selection of products top of the line, but their willingness to provide first rate service is unmatched. General Lumber runs synonymously with "service with a smile". To top if off, the shop dog Woody provides a unique, and amiable environment that i can surely say you wont find anywhere else. No exaggeration, I went in one day for some butane fuel and ended up spending an hour with the employees in the shop just talking about everything and anything. As someone who has much experience with contractors and builders, these guys are top of the line for all your needs. Very disappointed by this company!!!!!! I previously got a quote from Andersen to replace all my windows in Manhattan. I called Marvin Windows who referred General Lumber as one of their contractors. I called them to get another estimate. 3 guys from General Lumber Co came last Thursday to my apartment lead by a certain D. Watching them, frankly, was like being in an episode of The Sopranos. I wanted my 10 windows replaced. Some of the windows needs new framing as the frame wood is getting rotten. He started to sell me the idea I needed more than a replacement and a framing job but to change all the frames all together with special isolation inside, etc... I replied I wanted to see two different quotes as it would certainly be a lot of money to redo all windows ( something the Andersen guy never said was necessary ). D. promised me these quotes the day after ( last Friday ). I never got anything even though I called twice this week. I finally spoke today to D. ( 7 days later ) , who apologized for the delay and then, out of the blue, told me he never agreed to send me any quote on a replacement job, only if I would redo everything. I replied it was not what was he had promised. He said he was not interested anymore in the job when I mentioned again that Andersen Windows did give me a quote the same day they visited my apartment and they never had any issue about a replacement job only!!! Talking to this guy at General Lumber, I clearly had the feeling I was being bullied into buying a service I did not want in the first place. I of course declined. Shame. And I'll be ordering my windows at Andersen next week. Pity there are not much choices out there. These guys seems to be as un-professional as at Home Depot! read more

There's a reason why the home depots haven't taken over the world. I always regret going to the one right in front of the tunnel then having to turn around then come back to this store for help. The only issue is that they have normal hours and I try but it takes effort to transit back home from the city to make it there when I really need something. read more
