Terracotta pots, wall hooks, drills, hand and dish soap... you can find a lot in this little gem on Washington. It's a little tight inside but the store is surprisingly big. Someone always asks if they can help me find something the minute I walk in and if I say no, I'm left to fend for myself no problem. They can be a bit pricey for bigger things, like the drill my fiancé bought, but they are really reasonably priced for most other things. I know they can paint match and have picked up small bottles and cans for small projects. This a great neighborhood spot and I stop in often. I brought a copied key here from another hardware store (not in the area) that didn't work in my lock... I explained I'd rather try to salvage the key I already had from the other store than buy a new key from them, but was happy to pay the price of a new key. Not only did they fix the key that the other hardware store had botched, but they insisted on no charge for the service! So kind and really made my day. I'll gladly come back here for other errands & am grateful to have a local hardware store like this nearby. read more

Left it to the professionals while I watched my illegally parked car. Walked out, home, key, door, nope. They gave me SC8. Really? Ok, fine. I went back - returned the crappy keys. They didn't have SC9 on the shelf...but their inventory system indicted a shipment came in today and they had 20 on hand. I waited 15 minutes, and the guy couldn't find them. He came back and kept looking through the keys on the rack...and just started making two different ones without saying anything to me. Meanwhile - Boing. Boing. Boing. Grooo. Grooo. When he was done, I asked him, "so key guy, what am I getting?" He said that SC20 is the same as SC9, and "the book says it is a suitable replacement when SC9 is unavailable." Boing. Boing. Ok, I suppose that might be a thing. Filled out way too much paperwork for a $5 transaction, got $1.07 in credit, went to the gym. Went home, the keys DID NOT WORK. That's it. I'm done, you are all insane. I will be back to get my money, and i'm getting my key copied tomorrow in the city somewhere close to my office. You have managed to take this seemingly routine task and boing boing boing it to a frustration level only attainable by being professionally bad at doing simple tasks. Sorry. The young guys working the store are polite, but don't really have much of a clue as to where anything is at. They'll be able to point you to a row, but it's up to you to dig through everything. I don't blame them, because the aisles are a hot mess. Pretend you have an eccentric uncle that hoards everything and you go shopping in his tool shed and garage. Then open your eyes. Tada - you are standing at the Hoboken Ace Hardware store. Many items also go out of stock for extended periods of time. If you point it out, they'll just say "Huh. Yep, look's like we're out." Forget re-ordering - a simple shrug will do. If you try to order online in advance to give them the heads up, they'll simply cancel your order when it hits their system. What a crock. They will have 25% of what you need 100% of the time. There is a Home Depot and Target in Jersey City just south of the train station. Go there instead. Target has little sections of light bulbs, tools, gardening equipment, etc. that you'll need for small everyday fixes. The Home Depot is well maintained and their associates are very helpful and can even give you tips on how to do your projects, whether you're planting some hedges, trying to install a light or caulking your bathtub. read more

While they might be the only real hardware store in Hoboken and a little overpriced, I'm constantly running here to pick up things I need for my apartment and they are always friendly. They usually have anything you need that you would often find at a hardware store and you are never left wandering. My biggest issue is with their hours, a lot of times my purchases have to wait until the weekend (if I'm around) because they don't stay open very late and I often can't make it there after work before they close. read more

Convenient location, outrageous pricing. I stopped in here recently intending to pick up paint and related supplies. The woman who helped me quoted me prices on a gallon of Benjamin Moore paint as follows: $35 for their 'Ben' line (the lowest quality), $45 for the mid-range 'Regal' line, and $60 for the 'Aura' line. She didn't have much good to say about the 'Ben', and tried to talk up 'Regal' and 'Aura'. For the record, $45 - $60 for a single gallon of paint is ridiculous. You can get a gallon of high-quality paint at the nearby Home Depot for half that. If you're carless and need to shop here, I understand. If not, you're far better off with the much wider selection and much better pricing at Home Depot on 12th St. in Jersey City, literally just a mile away. read more

I've been here several times through the years. It is definitely packed to the brim, but with real estate so high it makes sense. The staff have always been helpful and even let me test lightbulbs before I bought it to see if I like the lighting. Yes the prices are higher but you're also getting much better service. read more

Been here several times, and each time I felt like I was bothering them. Ask for advice, if you dare, and you'll most likely be treated like you are an inferior human being. Ask someone where to find a product, and they'll tell you where to find it, and maybe even point in the direction, if you're lucky. Come on people, it's not that big of a store, can you take 10 seconds to walk me over and find the product and make sure I am getting what I needed? Trying to get answers or information from them is like pulling teeth. The most recent time I came in, I stood there looking at the guy behind the counter for a minute before he would acknowledge my presence. I needed some paint (Benjamin Moore) to touch up my walls, and I had the original can with the label on it showing the exact color mixture. Here is how the conversation went down: Me: "Hi, can I get a small container of this paint?" Him: "They don't make that paint anymore" Me: "Oh.....Do you happen to have any left, or know where I can get it?" Him: "We only carry it in the gallon size, but it is $45" Me: "Oh.....so they do still make it." Him: "Yes, but only the gallon." Me: "Ok....well that's way more than I need anyway. Do you have any more of the smaller size?" (which I am holding in my hand) Him: "No" Me: "Ok.....so what are my options? Is there any way I can still get the smaller size?" Him: "I would have to do a special order for you." Me: "Ok thanks bye!" (under my breath: "So...you CAN get it, it is just too much trouble for you.") Service without a smile. All he needed to do was say: "We do have that paint, but only in the gallon size. However, if you want the smaller size, I'd be happy to special order it for you and it will be here next week. There is a shipping charge of $X. Would you like me to place the order for you?" (That's how you provide *service* to a customer.) I'd rather take my business somewhere that actually acts like they want my business. (BTW - I went somewhere else and got what I needed without a problem) read more

Really best for emergencies only, but not on Sunday because they're closed. The space is ridiculously cramped and when it's busy it is an exercise in futility to get anything. And their hours really aren't great. They are usually fairly helpful but not always. Because of the "convenience factor" everything is pretty overpriced. And when I say convenient, I mean if you if you live below 6th street because it's a bit of a walk for overpriced stuff from uptown. I got a quart of paint the other day because I didn't have my car and it was $19.99 quite literally double what you'd pay at Home Depot/Lowes, etc. I am happy to support a local place, but it's ACE and the pricing is over the top. So unless I absolutely have a honey-do fix it emergency I'd rather walk or drive to Home Depot to save a bunch of money. read more

Super slow, inattentive service. Charged me wrong amounts for parts. Not the best hardware store, to say the least.

This place is con. I went there to make a key duplicate. 1. NO staff, and I mean no staff, was talking English in this store. Right in the middle of Hoboken! They were busy chatting about the shoppers making comments about them (I took high school and college Spanish to know enough about what they are saying). 2. They gouged me for a key duplication. They charged me $4 to make ONE key duplicate where it should have been less than a dollar. The guy was talking to the cashier in Spanish in front of me telling the girl to charge me the higher price and to just do it. I would never come back here ever again. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I have been going to this hardware store for seven years and I've never had anything but excellent experiences. If you go in the evening you could hear the treadmills humming but it does not seem to effect anyone. They are very good at matching paint as well as advising on small repairs. read more

Rip off city! Last year, I was told they charge $5 to rescreen a window screen. Yesterday it was $16.99! They also wanted to charge me $6.99 for a paint sample. I would not buy anything there again unless it has a price tag on it. Definitely got the feeling, as have others, that they're making up prices as they go along. read more

Love the small mom and pop feels of this place. The store looks small from the outside but it is pretty stocked up! Now this is no home depot but pretty sufficient. We got paint, painting supplies, and other tools over the weekend here.. prices are reasonable and service was good. One thing is that they are closed on Sunday, so a little inconvenient but plan ahead and you should be fine. read more

I shop in here once or twice a month. If I need paint or a tool or just a light bulb. I always find there are plenty of employees to help me when I can't find something. There are a lot of items in a small space so sometimes I do need help finding things. Pricing is fine. I don't really check if something is $1 cheaper at Home Depot. Who cares? This is a City Hardware store and a good one. Hoboken is lucky to have a hardware store. Lots of little towns would love to have one this good. read more

I got to agree with Ronald on this one. I went in there to pick up some wall putty, a paint brush and some nails and almost the same thing happened. Neither people working the cashier desk spoke one piece of English while I was there and the only way I knew they were trying to rip me off was because I could understand some of what they were saying in Spanish. We were moving my sister into Hoboken and needed an Allen Wrench...Bad. We saw this place opened at 9am so we went there and both the guys working in the store were very helpful. We found what we needed and bought it. A little pricey at $20 for the set but not totally terrible. Ultimately, we needed the wrench to take the bottoms off a couch to attempt to get it in the apartment. The bottoms came off but we still couldn't get the couch in. Oh well but certainly not this place's fault. I would use this place again. read more

I never really go into a hardware store expecting 5-star hospitality.. but that is exactly what I received on 2 separate occasions at this ACE location in Hoboken. Last night my friend and I came in desperate for Raid (for a cockroach issue) as well as a doorstop to block them. We were greeted warmly and a friendly employee was happy to help us, even when we got lost he was really enthusiastic, welcoming and helpful. Great staff.. they have most everything you need for a house or apartment and are very helpful. i shop here instead of home depot. For volume Home Depot has better prices, but by the time you factor in driving and parking and then trying to find someone there to help you City Paint is waaaaayy faster. Yes the folks who run it speak spanish, but i've never had a problem communicating with them. And I am glad for them they are closed Sundays. If they were open 7 days then that other hardware store on Washington probably would not exist.... and those are nice guys too! read more

First, I know this is my first review but I'm in no way associated with this business. Maybe this is the first of more to come but more likely I'm too damned lazy. I'm writing this because I don't feel City Paint deserves the low rating it has here. I only know about the reviews because I googled to check the hours and the 2 star Yelp rating was just under the store's home page. I've been a customer as long as I've lived in Hoboken, which is almost 20 years at this point. I can't friggen believe it's been that long. In that time, I've found the staff to be generally knowledgeable and accommodating. In the past couple years they've added a bunch of new, younger employees who I've found to provide even better service. When I walk in, it's more likely that I'll be asked 2 or 3 times if I want help rather than be ignored. If I need a particular screw or bolt, which seems to happen all the time, one of the staff will always find it for me in a couple minutes. Maybe it's just my personal experience, but I really don't get the complaints about customer service. The aisles are indeed narrow and stacked. It can be intimidating, but I want my local hardware store packed to the gills. It's rare that I've gone in for something and not been able to find it. I don't buy my power tools, plumbing fixtures or other big ticket items here, their selection is limited and the prices not particularly competitive. But for the vast majority of day to day consumables for general home maintenance, I shop here almost exclusively. Their prices are often a bit more expensive than Home Depot, though not excessively so. The service, convenience, and not losing my parking space makes the cost differential well worth it. The neighborhood hardware store is becoming a rare animal. Hoboken just lost one, though not a particularly good one. Since stores On Washington St seem to be constantly opening and closing, I'm glad that this one remains. It's one of the better hardware stores I've been in. And I've been in a lot. For keys I go to Hoboken Lock at 624 Washington. They're more expensive but they know what they're doing. Only issue is they're only open until 5 on weekdays and 2 on Saturday. Oh yeah, since I may not write any more reviews, La Isla, Vito's Deli, Benny Tudino's, Ali Baba and Sri Thai are my go to for takeout, though Vito's prices have gone through the roof . And if you like Vietnamese, New Thanh Hoai in Jersey City near the Holland Tunnel is outstanding and has parking. read more

I just walked out this morning when they refused to sell me the Super Spec paint. The man tells me they don't sell that - well, you sold me two gallons of it two weeks ago, so when I come back today to buy six gallons of paint you say you don't sell it? They will do anything to rip you off at this place - never clear on prices, and then just flat out lied to me that they don't sell the cheaper version. I half wanted to come home, get the paint and reciept and go back to call them out. But instead I'll drive to another benjamin moore dealer to have someone honest sell me some paint. Agree with the other posters, avoid this place. And if you need a key, go to Hoboken Lock. Six keys for $4 and they all work! read more

I had to paint my bedroom and I came in and I'm not very knowledgeable and they walked me step by step in how to do it and they even suggested the color, Buxton Blue which I love for my room its a very calming gray blue. My wife and I had a very good experience here. We have just moved to Hoboken and stopped off here. We were looking for paint and Emilio spent a ton of time with us helping to select the right colors for our rooms. We actually had a really fun time and they stayed open late to help.
