John Highlander comes recommended by everyone. We needed parts of our 1890s original pine flooring restored. After being turned away by multiple other hardwood flooring bizs, John said he could help us out. Our floors were a time consuming project because we had to replace multiple boards without tearing up all surrounding wood. John sent "two of his most patient guys" for two days of labor - which included fixing the main problem in our kitchen, and then small flooring projects all over the house that we could squeeze in. That's exactly what we needed. Overall, they did a great job. They know how to work with old, original hardwood flooring, their work feels secure and sturdy, and they did as best a job as they could've done on color matching the stain. On June 21 2019 I called this place and was told the price was $3 per square feet. I told the guy to do the calculation for me. My rectangular living room is 21 feet 5 inches and 14 feet 9 inches. So about 21 and 15. He told me on the phone everything was included in the $3/square feet pricing. I took notes of what he said: $3/per square feet sand it, buff it, condition wood, apply stain, and 3 coats of poly He puts samples on floor for customer to pick out the color So the math comes out to 21 x 15 x $3 = $945 total Next day he replies via a text and tells me it's $1,300 total! Hahahahahhaha can you believe this? Did this guy really think I was not going to do the math on my own? I've included a picture of the conversation we had through text message. read more

Description Of Work: John from Highlander floor came in person to provide an estimate to refinish our hardwood floor. He sent 3 guys to come and refinished our floor. The work quoted was (1) sand 2 floors (960 sq ft) to its natural color and (2) apply 3 coats of water based polyurethane I've contacted John about this issue and he has provided zero response. Pro - Floor work was great. Most floor marks were removed. Great colors. - Timely and quick (they came one day after giving quote and finished the job in one day) Con It's hard to give them bad review because the floor did look great and the crew was nice. However, since they left alot of aftermath, we have to be fair and describe our experience as is - The crew turned on our central air conditioning that results in significant amount of saw dust trapped in our filter. Additionally, the saw dust traveled all over the duct work so now we can't turn the AC back on until we hire professional to clean the ducts (estimate at ~$200). We are struggling with the air quality and can't turn the AC back on as it would blow saw dust all over - Multiple stain marks on the floor moldings. Some stain marks on wall - Left garbage outside our house (i.e can drinks that they grabbed from our place) - In the clean up process, some of our section off belongings were displaced (looks like someone went through our stuff) - Floor isn't shining yet but they said to wait 2 weeks for floor to cure (to be determined) I am mix about recommending them again. While the floor work was great, I'm not sure if the dust cleaning in our central air system is worth the effort. I'd assume that this would be handled with more knowledge and common sense. The review would've been higher rating had they bother to reply us with our concerns. Instead John chose to ignore us. read more

John was amazing working with us and insurance to completely redo 80% of the floors in our condo. John walked us through step by step. Be careful! I hired John to do a simple sanding staining job years back. He will Impress you with the consultation. That's where being impressed will end. 1. Way over measured the rooms....Then over calculates the total square feet. 2. Very sloppy staining, so uneven I had several people comment that it looked like the worker spilled the can of stain in the muddle of the floor and couldn't get it up enough so that it was a fairly large dark stain the middle of the floor in the hall. When I brought to his attention he had the nerve to say "it will even out when it dries". It was already dry and had the polyurethane on it already. 3. Another thing was my central a/c was run while sanding was done. Big mistake!!! Had to get it cleaned out and still had saw dust flying everywhere for a year after. 4. Neighbor in my complex who also hired hom said he not only didn't correct a mistake he made, he never even returned to finish the job after being paid! I will be updating this review with a copy of his invoice as well as photos of the staining spill fiasco. Be careful with this one, I'd hazard a guess to say most of these positive reviews are self written. They're identical to his bs angles list reviews from years back When I hired him all he did was preach about his flawless reviews on angies list. He showed up exactly when he said he would every time, was able to finish our project within an extremely tight time frame, and answered every question I had promptly and with a friendly demeanor. The cost of our project was very reasonable for the quality of flooring, skill, and labor involved, and he even accommodated extra work when we decided we wanted to add new moldings halfway through the process. WARNING! Thinking of calling Highlander? STOP! Please read this nightmare of an experience we went through first before calling. When we started our research for a reliable wood floor installer we went to AngiesList and Highlander was one of the most high rated companies. We had John assess our current floors and provide his guidance on what we should do. He recommended that we could lay a new floor on top of the existing floor that we have, instead of replacing the existing floors. We asked him several times if he was sure and that other contractors said we should replace the existing floors. John said "trust me", "you won't have any problems - and if you do I'll fix it", and "I'm a local guy - everybody knows me around the neighborhood". The quote we received from John that was very reasonable compared to other quotes and John was very responsive and and seemed trustworthy, so we went with him. After the floors were installed everything seemed great. After only 2-3 months the issues started. The floors started to buckle, splinter, and widen. There are even parts of our floor that have air gabs! Obviously we were not happy. It wasn't as easy getting a hold of John anymore. Unfortunately, when we needed him most, John turned into one of those people that always have something going on in their lives that is a priority, except taking care of his client. It was "I'm in Ireland" to "I'm a volunteer firefights" to an assortment of other reasons why he suddenly became one of the hardest people for us to reach and get a response from. It took a while but we finally getting through to John. He agreed to cover the cost to redo the floors as himself was surprised with the issues we have been faced with. We had a month before our upcoming vacation, which we planned would be the week that John would re-do the floors. The day of the walk-through came and JOHN NEVER SHOWED UP! The truth is John doesn't even know what the problems are still! I beg you to take a look at the pictures of our floors - read our experience, and be VERY CAUTIOUS about using John. The "Irish John" that was always available to talk and gave us a warm and comfortable feeling quickly turned into "flaky John" who has not been responsive and has not taken responsibility for his poor workmanship. Redoing the floors with John cost us over $10,000. At this point we have asked John to reimburse us for the cost since he didn't even show up to redo the floors as promised. Guess what - he still hasn't responded to our email. Now we have to go through legal channels and fight for our money back. We were told by other floor guys that we couldn't make our uneven floors even, but John said it could be done and he did it! Work was done on time and for the exact cost he quoted us. We used Highlander Hardwood Floor based on a recommendation from a friend and we had a fantastic experience! John was very responsive from the start, always answering my calls or calling me back quickly. We needed to sand and re-stain our entire apartment (3 bedrooms plus living/dining room) and scheduled the job a few weeks in advance with a 50% deposit. John kept in touch with me leading up to the start of the job, which took 3 days (we stayed completely out of the apartment to make sure the floors were not affected), and it was done on schedule and meticulously. The workers even taped our front door with painters tape so dust and odor would not go into our building common hallway. On the first day, they stained a few samples on the floor for us to look at since stain color can look very different depending on your existing flooring. We picked a weathered oak stain with a satin (matte) finish. They are very natural but still have a finished look to them. We absolutely love our floors! read more

Highlander Hardwood Floors is AMAZING! I hired them to remove carpet and refinish hardwood floors in a new home we purchased. They did ALL the necessary work within two days! They were prompt, professional, and did stellar work. We decided to get the floors in a another room replaced. They demo'd the old floor and replaced it new floors within two days! It was a complex install as the floors in the adjacent rooms were different heights, but the new floors were installed and woven into the existing rooms seamlessly! They look absolutely AMAZING! As far as standing by there work, another contractor scuffed up my new floors while installing appliances and I contacted John (probably the nicest contractor I ever met) who agreed to perform touchups (which he's done for me in the past). This is my floor guy! I will never need to call another flooring company for a quote. John is honest, communicative, and the quality of his company's work is impeccable. Great experience! We closed on our new home recently, and with a very tight window between closing and moving in, we had a laundry list of renovations to be completed. The first of which would set everything else in motion was sanding and staining the floors. Because of a delay with our bank, we lost 12 days on starting renovations, pushing all of our contractors back nearly 2 weeks. I explained this to John at Highlander, and due to his extremely busy calendar, it seemed dire and that we needed to think about a plan B. However, this is when John rose to the occasion and moved Heaven and earth to get the job done for us on time. In short - he saved us and our entire schedule! Horrible. experience. Nightmare. Bait & Switch. DO NOT TRUST. 1) John showed up to the initial estimate. That was fine. 2) His team that did the work was horrible including project manager. When removing the old wood and installing the new, they scuffed up the ceiling and surrounding walls. 3) Installed new crown molding that was different from the original. Also refused to paint it despite saying they would. IT GETS BETTER.... Ron the "Project Manager". Horrible. He doesn't return calls either. Alvero, guilty as charged. The whole crew is suspect. 4) One week after job completion John came back to see the issues we had. #1 the unpainted crown molding and #2 the creaking floors. ie. floorboard issues. He was going to send a team to repair. That was November 2015. 5) I was able to get him back out to the apartment as he would only do the work if I coupled that up with some other renovation work in my unit. True story. When we opted to NOT to other renovations, he disappeared again. John has been dodging ever since. The issues have gotten worse. Zero accountability. DO NOT HIRE. READ THE OTHER REVIEWS. Description Of Work: They removed previous floor coating and stained, sealed and polyurethaned the floor. They did a awesome job. Our previous contractor applied the wrong stain on the floor, further more the polyurethane that they applied on the floor starts to bubble couple of weeks later. There were large area where severe scratches and footprints were very obvious. Consequently, we decided to refinish the floor. Highlander were hired because they were very responsive and provided a reasonable price. They finished the work in three days. Me and my wife were very impressed by the result, especially in contrast with our previous contractor. After a month, the floor has not shown any bubble. The strain is beautiful and the polyurethane finish were perfect. The finished floor is smooth and has a deep rich shine. If only most contractor is as reliable as these guys. read more
