It peaked our interest and wouldn't you know it, there was an actual Farrow & Ball Paint Store 10 minutes from our apartment. I called on a Saturday late afternoon and spoke to Martin (Kesselman) explaining that we were interested in painting our house. Martin was able to steer us in the correct direction and made our vision come to life just by asking a few questions! With the distance between our project and Martin, there were many phone conversations, photos, and painting mistakes (I mixed the colours and made the bathroom look like a bandaid - not a good look!). Martin would set up times with us, and would want to see the progress and always asking for my thoughts and comments through the phases of the project. He was so patient responding to my frantic text and answering all my questions, and the why nots. Can't thank you enough for those calls! We now have a beautifully painted house (different colours in each room) that is warm and inviting (even with our shiny porcelain white floors). After spending endless hours on pinterest and looking through design magazines I walked into the Janovic store without a decision. After a warm greeting Jill asked me some questions and looked at photo's of my new space and of the tear sheets I had. I showed her the colors I originally thought I wanted and within minutes she gave me other options explaining why and how the colors look saturated on an entire wall vs a small sample card. She gave me the new swatches, marked which room each was for, her card and offered additional assistance if I needed more information. I returned a few weeks later to re-assess and Jill was on her break. Although the other consultants offered to assist me I decided to wait for Jill. We reviewed the previous color options and again after some questions she was able to narrow the option to the colors that are now on my wall and I absolutely love. More often than not, I find that the sales associates are not cross-trained so, if the product or solution you're looking for is not in the section they have been trained to oversee, you're left with the options of seeking out sales associates in different departments to tell your tale of woe multiple times or assume they don't carry what you need & leave. All this to say, my visit to Blaustein's was a great reminder of the value of one's neighborhood hardware store.

I still remember Pearl River in the early 2000s. Two full floors and the go to spot for anything and everything Chinese: snacks, dry goods, stationery, art supplies, home goods. Walking in felt like stepping into a small piece of China right in NYC. It felt layered, authentic, and full of discovery. Fast forward a few years and Pearl River moved to Broadway in SoHo. It was still two floors, more spacious, and if I remember correctly, it had an entrance on Broadway and another toward the back (I can't recall the exact cross street). Even through its moves, it retained that sense of depth and cultural immersion. I recently stopped by the current SoHo location. It's now just one floor. The layout is open and well organized, but noticeably smaller in scope. They carry a mix of items: a small selection of blind boxes, modernized gift items, Chinese art and figurines, cupware and fine plateware, a modest kitchenware section toward the back, a small apparel and footwear area, and a reduced stationery section. A small book section with more small figurines. They also carry a small but thoughtful selection of loose leaf teas, snacks, and pantry staples. It's still cute. The prices are reasonable. There are definitely thoughtful and modern touches. But if I'm being honest, it feels different. More condensed. More curated. Slightly Americanized. And maybe that's just nostalgia talking. I experienced what Pearl River once was, and that version was special. It's not bad. It's just not the Pearl River I remember.
