Well-stocked with basic hardware, electric, plumbing, painting and cleaning needs, and a neighborhood lighthouse that's skipped around the blocks for nearly a hundred years. We, who live and work in the area, need this place, go there first before on-line. read more

RUDE. Stay clear of this store. The male shopkeeper has no basic customer service etiquette whatsoever. It doesn't hurt to be nice if you are in the retail business. Emotional quotient goes a very long way. read more

The Owne's Great...the Employees, not so much... Great Ild Fashioned Hardware Store...

came in search of safety pins, and was offered help within a minute of very confused searching. before i could even thank the guy who helped me, a woman who seemed to be the owner decided to bark an order (something about fixing a screw?) at him. please be kinder to your employees. at the very least, treat them with the same standards of respect you require from them. read more

Extraordinarily rude staff incapable of providing basic service - called to ask what dimensions the picture hanging nails they sell are (no point in showing up just for things to be the wrong size) and they refused to tell me. Told me to just look up the brand online. Don't give them your business. Look elsewhere read more

unbelievable! I bought a moving blanket, took it home, opened it and saw that there was black mold growing on it. it stank too. I immediately folded it up and took it back to the store. there were 15 minutes too from the time I bought it to the time I returned it. they refused to take it back. I am SO SHOCKED at their abject dishonesty. they claimed that it was opened and they do t take back opened packages. but even when I bought it the package was opened on one side. it doesn't even close! unbelievable read more

If you know exactly what you need, just start at the counter and ask first, unless you have a good 30 minutes to spend making sense of the packed walls and shelves of miscellaneous repair items. After a discussion about which wall anchor would be the best for my needs when supporting a hanging shelf, I'm confident that they've been doing this for a while and are passionate about serving their customers needs without being pushy or trying to give you things you don't need. I also took delight in the fact that they were playing opera music in the store... a completely unexpected surprise. ;-) read more

M & D Shapiro True Value Hardware - Storefront & Subway Stop - Hardware Stores Near Me - New York, New York

The people who work here are super nice and helpful. I moved a few blocks away recently, and they've been able to give me good advice on my hardware and furniture building issues. My boyfriend and I had a furniture building dilemma and the woman working helped us a ton despite not making a sale off it. We now make it a point to come here for any hardware needs to support their business. They also have a good selection of cleaning supplies. Whenever I enter the store they are quick to offer friendly assistance. Highly recommend :) read more

Do not go here. The lady (seemed to be the owner) was EXTREMELY rude. Went to make two keys and she made a fit I only had a credit card to pay. Literally yelling in front of everyone "STOP MAKING THE KEYS!!!" Sorry, but there was no sign for cc minimum and thats not how you treat a new customer, if anything. Go anywhere else to get spoken to like an actual human. read more

Super helpful staff, way better than ACE Hardware. They always have good advice and the employees know what they're talking about. This past weekend they helped mix 2 orders of paint/primer for us. Their sister store on Bleecker is also very good. Bonus points for being dog friendly and having treats for our beagle. read more

Very helpful associates. Found exactly what I needed. Support your local hardware business.

I came across them by chance on my way to work and stopped in as I needed to make a copy of a key. Less than a few minutes, and only $2, I was done! Will definitely come here if I ever need keys made again. It's run by courteous and efficient staff. read more

Convenient location, corner of the Bleecker St. station. I was here to get 7 keys copied, one of them bent pretty badly. A man said "10 minutes," he was done in 8, and I paid $2 per key. Tested them all and they worked fine, even the copy of the bent one. Some needed to be pulled out a hair before turning, but that's common with copied keys, in my experience. While waiting, I asked a second guy if they were on Yelp (because I didn't recall seeing it when I was searching) and the guy said they were, brought up their page on his computer screen, pointed to the bad ratings, and said they weren't the best back then. That's why I'm happy to have found this place, to give them another start. They openly admit to past mistakes and commit to change, rather than denying or hiding problems or getting indignant about Yelp reviewers. Er, some other reviewer complained about the price here. Um, okay, maybe they are a bit pricier than other hardware stores (or maybe they're not, I wouldn't know), but speaking for myself, I spend anywhere between $0 and $200 a *week* in drinks depending on social obli... let's be real, drinking obligations. In light of that, I'm not too worried that my keys, which I'll be using *all freakin' year*, cost a quarter more to copy, or if a screw driver or hammer costs a few bucks more. How about not buying a latte everyday. That would save you enough to buy hundreds of hammers. read more

This is a pricey ACE Hardware store. Period, end of story. They have less of a selection of merchandise than they would if they had a larger retail area. Nearly all of their goods are sold blister-packed and/or carded. If you ask for something they do not carry, you will be met with blank stares. My last two remaining favorite hardware stores in the area are: http://www.yelp.com/biz/vercesi-hardware-new-york-2 http://www.yelp.com/biz/kove-bros-new-york read more

Great little store. Used to go to the one on Broome which is awful... surly staff and cheap Chinese-made products. This store has higher quality products, is clean, and the staff is nice. read more

nice experience. Great service. professional ,Helpful, knowledgeable staff with a huge range of products, at a reasonable price. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! DONT COME HERE! Rude owner and staff. They told me I could return something if it didn't work out if I had the box and receipt within 14 days. I brought back 4 days later and the woman owner started yelling at me in front of customers and employees saying that there was nothing she could do and to get out! HORRIBLE RUDE AND HIGH PRICES! Don't come here. Better to get cheaper at Home Depot and better customer service and satisfaction guaranteed. THE MALE EMPLOYEE was trying to force me out of the store by shoving his body infront of mine to get out of the door. This is not good! The customer is always right. read more

Stay away, this place disregards the notion that customer is always right. I was unsure of an item at the time of purchase and explicitly asked about the return policy, to then return a week later and have the nasty owner tell me to get lost. You're better off playing it safe and heading to your local Home Depot. As a business owner and having lived in New York all my life and have never dealt with a more difficult store owner. read more

The owner and staff are lovely and helpful. They have all of your hardware needs and do keys as well! Plus, they have bowl of free candy at the register which is always a bonus ! read more

I have been going here for almost 12 years. I would never go anywhere else. The staff is friends with everyone in the neighborhood. They go out of their way to get something for you if they are out or don't carry it - though this has RARELY been the case. Always giving helpful advice, always funny and friendly. Their new location on West 3rd Street between Lafayette and Broadway is GORGEOUS and extremely well-stocked. This is an old-school, family-run business and the city needs more of them! Think about going here instead of Home Depot. You will be glad that you did. read more

Stopped by in the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday to pick something up. The store was closed. It's also closed on Sundays. What sort of a business closes on the two busiest shopping days of the week in Manhattan? read more

The staff is tremendously helpful, and the store is really well stocked and having it nearby is a blessing.

I love them! They are very helpful always make me laugh! They go to great lengths to explain things to me (a skinny chick who insists on doing her own repairs). Athough they are a little more pricy, they are two blocks from home and that's worth it to me! read more

Lots of inventory with goof mix of cheap to high end materials and tools. Super helpful staff. My go-to local hardware store.

Finally! A hardware store in the city that's open on a Sunday. I was impressed by the friendliness that greets you at the door when you walk in. They were extremely patient with me as I picked my paint colors and willing to help! Additionally, there is a little of everything that you could possibly need. If you have a question about a home improvement project or just looking for a couple of nuts and bolts, this is somewhere I would definitely recommend read more

Bring your receipt or you'll get turned away in an extremely rude manner. Went here for convenience, but will be going elsewhere for now on.

This was by far the cleanest and organized hardware store I've ever been too. The employees are very knowledgeable and helpful unlike other hardware store. I highly recommend coming to this hardware store! read more

Great little hardware store. They have a good selection and the staff is extremely helpful.

Finding a good hardware store in NYC is a life long journey sometimes. Many are shabby and the staff are rude/surly. Mo and the team at M&D put this search to an end for me. They are super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I'm so glad they opened up on Berry and Broadway! read more

Good, no frills, neighborhood hardware store. The staff are friendly and they generally have whatever you need. Great place to have keys made. read more

Love Shapiro Hardware! They stayed open 20 minutes late so I could dash there to get a spare set of keys on a Saturday night. I had a friend coming in town and absolutely had to get the spare keys before heading home -- no other hardware store was open. When I called the gentleman who answered said they were about to close but when he heard my predicament he said he would stay until I got there. How awesome is that? They also have all the hardware basics -- I make it a point to go there and support them whenever I can. Really stand up guys, a great local business! read more

DON'T GO THERE! This place has a horrible, rude and dismissive staff; Average and up prices; Mediocre minus quality of service. I came to duplicate two keys, the guy at the front was rude, and the one who actually duplicated the keys did a horrible job - the keys were not identical and the door wouldn't open! After I realized that I came back to fix it - they wouldn't redo it but tried to fix the wrong duplication, obviously unsuccessfully. I came back again to return the duplication and get a refund - and THEN I WAS AMAZED - I asked it very politely and explained why - however, the same rude guy (the one with an arab accent) told me that it's against their policy, and dismissed my complaint. WTF?? Those guys shall not have anyone's business - they are CHEATERS! read more

This is only a standard hardware store, and the prices seem average and high. It may be handy if you know exactly what you need, but if you're going to need any help at all I would avoid it. The person who helped me was rude and dismissive, and confidently sent me home with a piece that didn't work after telling me that what I was looking for didn't exist (incorrect). Then gave me a hard time when I came for a refund/exchange. Too bad because the location is very handy for me! read more

This store is great. Had everything I needed, including metric sized European hex nuts (I needed one and they sold by the piece). Very helpful and nice folks. read more

This morning, after accidentally spilling primer in my bathtub, I called Shapiro for advice. The guy on the phone was very nice and told me it was going to be okay and to come in and get some paint thinner. When I got there, he gave me some to wash my hands off and then I bought a small bottle to clean up the bathtub mess. Both guys working were nice and helpful and let me use their bathroom. While their selection isn't the biggest, it is right next to the subway and they definitely have a good amount of home improvement stuff, i.e. varnish, paintbrushes, etc. read more

Great neighborhood store, went there today! Super helpful workers and very friendly. Had everything I needed, will absolutely go there again

I've used them for a couple of decades. Usually they're friendly and helpful, so that one reviewer must have gotten a bad apple. However, their expertise varies greatly. Some of them don't know much, some do. Prices are much higher than Home Depot and selection limited mostly to pre-packaged items -- can't buy loose bolts, etc. A better hardware store north of there is the Ace at 130 4th avenue. read more

Friendly and helpful staff. Impressive how much they're able to fit in such a small space. They have everything you could possibly need for your home. My dad has been going to this Hardware store since they were on Bowery. I've been a loyal customer at their location on Bleecker and Lafayette and I'm glad to see them opening a new Location with even more items and the same great customer service. It's good to have local hardware store, they all seem to be vanishing being replaced by show stores and coffee shops it seems. Can't be easy. Always found them helpful with what I have needed and will continue to give them my business. read more
